Web invariants for flamingo Specht modules
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 8 (2025) no. 1, pp. 235-266 • View PublicationBIB
Webs yield an especially important realization of certain Specht modules, irreducible representations of symmetric groups, as they provide a pictorial basis with a convenient diagrammatic calculus. In recent work, the last three authors associated polynomials to noncrossing partitions without singleton blocks, so that the corresponding polynomials form a web basis of the pennant Specht module $S^{(d,d,1^{n-2d})}$. These polynomials were interpreted as global sections of a line bundle on a 2-step partial flag variety. Here, we both simplify and extend this construction. On the one hand, we show that these polynomials can alternatively be situated in the homogeneous coordinate ring of a Grassmannian, instead of a 2-step partial flag variety, and can be realized as tensor invariants of classical (but highly nonplanar) tensor diagrams. On the other hand, we extend these ideas from the pennant Specht module $S^{(d,d,1^{n-2d})}$ to more general flamingo Specht modules $S^{(d^r,1^{n-rd})}$. In the hook case $r=1$, we obtain a spanning set that can be restricted to a basis in various ways. In the case $r>2$, we obtain a basis of a well-behaved subspace of $S^{(d^r,1^{n-rd})}$, but not of the entire module.

Relative cluster categories and Higgs categories with infinite-dimensional morphism spaces
Cluster algebras *with coefficients* are important since they appear in nature as coordinate algebras of varieties like Grassmannians, double Bruhat cells, unipotent cells, ... . The approach of Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer often yields Frobenius exact categories which allow to categorify such cluster algebras. In previous work, the third-named author has constructed Higgs categories and relative cluster categories in the relative Jacobi-finite setting (arXiv:2109.03707). Higgs categories generalize the Frobenius categories used by Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer. In this article, we construct the Higgs category and the relative cluster category in the relative Jacobi-infinite setting under suitable hypotheses. These cover for example the case of Jensen-King-Su's Grassmannian cluster category. As in the relative Jacobi-finite case, the Higgs category is no longer exact but still extriangulated in the sense of Nakaoka-Palu. We also construct a cluster character refining Plamondon's. In the appendix, Chris Fraser and the second-named author categorify quasi-cluster morphisms using Frobenius categories. A recent application of this result is due to Matthew Pressland, who uses it to prove a conjecture by Muller-Speyer.

Webs and canonical bases in degree two

We show that Lusztig's canonical basis for the degree two part of the Grassmannian coordinate ring is given by SL(k) web diagrams. Equivalently, we show that every SL(2) web immanant of a plabic graph for Gr(k,n) is an SL(k) web invariant.

Tensor diagrams and cluster combinatorics at punctures
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fock and Goncharov introduced a family of cluster algebras associated with the moduli of SL(k)-local systems on a marked surface with extra decorations at marked points. We study this family from an algebraic and combinatorial perspective, emphasizing the structures which arise when the surface has punctures. When k is 2, these structures are the tagged arcs and tagged triangulations of Fomin, Shapiro, and Thurston. For higher k, the tagging of arcs is replaced by a Weyl group action at punctures discovered by Goncharov and Shen. We pursue a higher analogue of a tagged triangulation in the language of tensor diagrams, extending work of Fomin and the second author, and we formulate skein-algebraic tools for calculating in these cluster algebras. We analyze the finite mutation type examples in detail.

Cyclic symmetry loci in Grasssmannians
The Grassmannian admits an action by a finite cyclic group via the cyclic shift map. We give a simple description of the points fixed by each element of this cyclic group, extending Karp's description of the points fixed by the cyclic shift itself. We give a cell decomposition of the set of totally nonnegative points in each cyclic symmetry locus and describe efficient total positivity tests, extending results of Postnikov to the cyclically symmetric setting. We describe a conjectural generalized cluster structure on cyclic symmetry loci provided the order of the orbifold point is sufficiently large. The generalized exchange relations we find should be a Higher Teichmüller analogue of the relations Chekhov and Shapiro used to study Teichmüller theory of orbifolds.

Positroid cluster structures from relabeled plabic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Grassmannian is a disjoint union of open positroid varieties $P_v$, certain smooth irreducible subvarieties whose definition is motivated by total positivity. The coordinate ring of $P_v$ is a cluster algebra, and each reduced plabic graph $G$ for $P_v$ determines a cluster. We study the effect of relabeling the boundary vertices of $G$ by a permutation $r$. Under suitable hypotheses on the permutation, we show that the relabeled graph $G^r$ determines a cluster for a different open positroid variety $P_w$. As a key step of the proof, we show that $P_v$ and $P_w$ are isomorphic by a nontrivial twist isomorphism. Our constructions yield many cluster structures on each open positroid variety $P_w$, given by plabic graphs with appropriately relabeled boundary. We conjecture that the seeds in all of these cluster structures are related by a combination of mutations and Laurent monomial transformations involving frozen variables, and establish this conjecture for (open) Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties. As an application, we also show that for certain reduced plabic graphs $G$, the "source" cluster and the "target" cluster are related by mutation and Laurent monomial rescalings.

Quantum affine algebras and Grassmannians

We study the relation between quantum affine algebras of type A and Grassmannian cluster algebras. Hernandez and Leclerc described an isomorphism from the Grothendieck ring of a certain subcategory $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}$ of $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}_n})$-modules to a quotient of the Grassmannian cluster algebra in which certain frozen variables are set to 1. We explain how this induces an isomorphism between the monoid of dominant monomials, used to parameterize simple modules, and a quotient of the monoid of rectangular semistandard Young tableaux. Via the isomorphism, we define an element ch(T) in a Grassmannian cluster algebra for every rectangular tableau T. By results of Kashiwara, Kim, Oh, and Park, and also of Qin, every Grassmannian cluster monomial is of the form ch(T) for some T. Using formulas of Arakawa-Suzuki, we give an explicit expression for ch(T), and also give explicit q-character formulas for finite-dimensional $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}_n})$-modules. We give a tableau-theoretic rule for performing mutations in Grassmannian cluster algebras. We suggest how our formulas might be used to study reality and primeness of modules, and compatibility of cluster variables.

From dimers to webs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We formulate a higher-rank version of the boundary measurement map for weighted planar bipartite networks in the disk. It sends a network to a linear combination of SL$_r$-webs, and is built upon the r-fold dimer model on the network. When r equals 1, our map is a reformulation of Postnikov's boundary measurement used to coordinatize positroid strata. When r equals 2 or 3, it is a reformulation of the SL$_2$- and SL$_3$-web immanants defined by the second author. The basic result is that the higher rank map factors through Postnikov's map. As an application, we deduce generators and relations for the space of SL$_r$-webs, reproving a result of Cautis-Kamnitzer-Morrison. We establish compatibility between our map and restriction to positroid strata, and thus between webs and total positivity.

Braid group symmetries of Grassmannian cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define an action of the extended affine d-strand braid group on the open positroid stratum in the Grassmannian Gr(k,n), for d the greatest common divisor of k and n. The action is by quasi-automorphisms of the cluster structure on the Grassmannian, determining a homomorphism from the extended affine braid group to the cluster modular group. We also define a quasi-isomorphism between the Grassmannian Gr(k,rk) and the Fock-Goncharov configuration space of 2r-tuples of affine flags for SL(k). This identifies the cluster variables, clusters, and cluster modular groups, in these two cluster structures. Fomin and Pylyavskyy proposed a description of the cluster combinatorics for Gr(3,n) in terms of Kuperberg's basis of non-elliptic webs. As our main application, we prove many of their conjectures for Gr(3,9) and give a presentation for its cluster modular group. We establish similar results for Gr(4,8). These results rely on the fact that both of these Grassmannians have finite mutation type.

Quasi-homomorphisms of cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce quasi-homomorphisms of cluster algebras, a flexible notion of a map between cluster algebras of the same type (but with different coefficients). The definition is given in terms of seed orbits, the smallest equivalence classes of seeds on which the mutation rules for non-normalized seeds are unambiguous. We present examples of quasi-homomorphisms involving familiar cluster algebras, such as cluster structures on Grassmannians, and those associated with marked surfaces with boundary. We explore the related notion of a quasi-automorphism, and compare the resulting group with other groups of symmetries of cluster structures. For cluster algebras from surfaces, we determine the subgroup of quasi-automorphisms inside the tagged mapping class group of the surface.
