Pseudo-centralizers in affine Hecke algebras
We introduce and study a subalgebra $\mathcal{B}$ of the affine Hecke algebra, which arises from a centralizer construction in the double affine Hecke algebra, and which may be regarded as a $v$-deformation of the affine Fomin-Stanley subalgebra introduced by Lam as a combinatorial model for the affine Grassmannian homology ring. In types $\mathsf{A}_n$ and $\mathsf{B}_2$ and $\mathsf{G}_2$, we show that $\mathcal{B}_\mathrm{aff}$ admits a canonical basis indexed by the cosets of the finite Weyl group in the affine Weyl group. We also discuss conjectural positivity properties of the canonical basis and explain how it can be used to study the center of the affine Hecke algebra.
Root systems constructed by folding of the extended Dynkin diagrams
The extended affine Weyl group of a root system is the semidirect product of the corresponding Weyl group by its coweight lattice. The stabilizer subgroup of the extended affine Weyl group with respect to the corresponding fundamental alcove induces a subgroup of automorphisms of the extended Dynkin diagram. In this paper, we construct a finite root system by folding by the elements of the subgroup.
Core abaci and Diophantine equations I: fundamental weight
In the light of a series of papers on moving vectors, we define and study core abaci of classical affine types for arbitrary charge. This greatly extends the concept of cores with charge zero, and make us being able to parameterize the affine Grassmannian $W^j$ by core abaci of charge $j$ for arbitrary classical affine types. By associating a core abacus $(\lam, j)$ to a weight $Λ_j-β$ and an affine Weyl group element $w_{\lam, j}$, we prove that the height of $β$ is equal to the atomic length of $w_{\lam, j}$. This solves a generalized version of the open problem raised by Brunat, Chapelier-Laget and Gerber. Moreover, Diophantine equations of classical affine types are established by using the height formula that given by Uglov vector. The solutions of certain classes of these Diophantine equations are proved to be completely parameterised by core abaci. As another application, closed formulae for computing the number of certain kinds of core abaci are given.
Stingray Patterns of Dominant Weights
We study the set $W_{r,e,w}\ $ of dominant weights of $\mathfrak{sl}_r$ arising from partitions of fixed $e$-weight $w$. For $e$-cores, we show that $W_{r,e,0}\ $ decomposes as a disjoint union of simplices indexed by compositions of $r$. For general $w$, we prove that $W_{r,e,w}\ $ is a disjoint union of copies of these simplices, with multiplicities determined by the corresponding quotient data, yielding in particular a closed counting formula for $|W_{r,e,w}\ |\ $. The geometry gives rise to the stingray patterns appearing in the title. More generally, it yields a natural labeling of the dominant $e$-alcoves meeting $W_{r,e,w}\ $ by weak compositions of $w$, together with a compatible partial action of the affine Weyl group via wall crossing. Finally, we give an explicit alcove-geometric proof of the empty runner removal theorem for Iwahori-Hecke algebras.
Seidel product formula in equivariant quantum $K$-theory of flag varieties
We prove a Seidel product formula for the torus-equivariant quantum $K$-theory of a generalized flag variety $G/P.$ This is a natural generalization of the corresponding results by Buch, Chaput, and Perrin for the cominuscule flag varieties. Our proof is based on the $K$-theoretic Peterson isomorphism, due to Kato. We also use a version of the $K$-theoretic nil-Hecke algebra associated with the extended affine Weyl group, which was studied by Ikeda, Shimozono, and Yamaguchi.
Atomic decomposition for an affine Weyl group of type $G_2$
We show that the elements of the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis of the spherical Hecke algebra of type $G_2$ have an atomic decomposition. As a by-product, we obtain a new algorithm to compute generalized Kostka--Foulkes polynomials in type $G_2$.
A positivity property in the based ring of the lowest two-sided cell
Let $W_{\mathrm{aff}}$ be an extended affine Weyl group and $\mathbf{H}$ and $J$ be the corresponding affine and asymptotic Hecke algebras with standard bases $\{T_x\}$ and $\{t_w\}$, respectively. Viewing $J$ as a subalgebra of the $\mathbf{q}^{-\frac{1}{2}}$-adic completion of $\mathbf{H}$, we give formulas for the coefficient of $T_x$ in $t_w$ for various $x$ and $w$ in the lowest two-sided cell, in terms of generalized exponents of the Langlands dual group, under a hypothesis on the left cell containing $w$. In particular our results hold for the canonical left cell. For such $w$ we also define a seemingly new positive basis for the corresponding subring of $J$. For $\mathrm{GL}_n$, we give partial results for some other cells.
Tensor Product Decompositions, Limits in Excellent Filtrations, Affine Weyl Group Orbits, and Tableaux Counting
We express the outer multiplicities in the tensor products of two fundamental simple modules for an affine Kac-Moody algebra of type $A$ in terms of counting certain sets of multipartitions by exploring the stabilizing limits of certain excellent filtrations. This extends for all ranks a previously obtained result by Jakelić and the second author for rank $1$. The same outer multiplicities were previously computed by Misra and Wilson in terms of counting certain sets of tableaux. By comparing these two expressions and by explicitly exhibiting a combinatorial description of level-$2$ affine Weyl group orbits, we establish the existence of a bijection between the Misra-Wilson set of tableaux and a disjoint union of certain sets of multipartitions.
Taming Irrationality: An Invariance Principle for the Random Billiard Walk
The random billiard walk is a stochastic process $(L_t)_{t\geq 0}$ in which a laser moves through the Coxeter arrangement of an affine Weyl group in $\mathbb{R}^d$, reflecting at each hyperplane with probability $p\in (0, 1)$ and transmitting unchanged otherwise. Defant, Jiradilok, and Mossel introduced this process from the perspective of algebraic combinatorics and established that, for initial directions aligned with the coroot lattice, $L_t/\sqrt{t}$ converges to a centered spherical Gaussian. We bring analytic tools from ergodic theory and probability to the problem and extend this central limit theorem to all initial directions. More strongly, we prove the rescaled trajectories $t\mapsto n^{-1/2}L_{tn}$ converge to isotropic Brownian motion. Away from directions with rational dependencies, the limiting covariance varies continuously in $p$ and the initial direction.
Shape and class of Bruhat Intervals
We study Bruhat intervals in affine Weyl groups by viewing them as regions of alcoves. In type $\widetilde{A}_2$ we show that each interval coincides with a generalized permutohedron minus a star-shaped polygon, and we prove a subtler version inside the dominant chamber of type $\widetilde{A}_n$. Motivated by this geometry, we conjecture that whenever two Bruhat intervals are isomorphic, there exists an isomorphism realized by a piecewise isometry. We prove this when both endpoints are dominant in $\widetilde{A}_2$ and obtain partial results in $\widetilde{A}_n$. In the course of proving these results, we made the surprising observation that much of the information contained in a Bruhat interval is already encoded in a tiny portion of it.
Paper BOAT
We derive a formula for computing the size of lower Bruhat intervals for elements in the dominant cone of an affine Weyl group of type $A$. This enumeration problem is reduced to counting lattice points in certain polyhedra. Our main tool is a decomposition -- or tiling -- of each interval into smaller, combinatorially tractable pieces, which we call paper boats. We also conjecture a generalization of this formula to all affine Weyl groups, restricted to elements in the lowest two-sided Kazhdan-Lusztig cell, which contains almost all of the elements.
Permutohedron's volume via Dyck paths
In a recent project, Castillo, Libedinsky, Plaza, and the author established a deep connection between the size of lower Bruhat intervals in affine Weyl groups and the volume of the permutohedron, showing that the former can be expressed as a linear combination of the latter. In this paper, we provide a formula for the volume of this polytope in terms of Dyck paths. Thus, we present a shorter, alternative, and enlightening proof of a previous formula given by Postnikov.
Quantum K--theory of Grassmannians from a Yang-Baxter algebra
In an earlier paper, two of the authors defined a $5$-vertex Yang-Baxter algebra (a Hopf algebra) which acts on the sum of the equivariant quantum K-rings of Grassmannians $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, where $k$ varies from $0$ to $n$. We construct geometrically defined operators on quantum K-rings describing this action. In particular, the $R$-matrix defining the Yang-Baxter algebra corresponds to the left Weyl group action. Most importantly, we use the `quantum=classical' statement for the quantum K-theory of Grassmannians to prove an explicit geometric interpretation of the action of generators of the Yang-Baxter algebra. The diagonal entries of the monodromy matrix are given by quantum K-multiplications by explicitly defined classes, and the off-diagonal entries by certain push-pull convolutions. We use this to find a quantization of the classes of fixed points in the quantum K-rings, corresponding to the Bethe vectors of the Yang-Baxter algebra. On each of the quantum K-rings, we prove that the two Frobenius structures (one from geometry, and the other from the integrable system construction) coincide. We discuss several applications, including an action of the extended affine Weyl group on the quantum K-theory ring (extending the Seidel action), a quantum version of the localization map (which is a ring homomorphism with respect to the quantum K-product), and a graphical calculus to multiply by Hirzebruch $λ_y$ classes of the dual of the tautological quotient bundle. In an Appendix we illustrate our results in the case when $n=2$.
Random Subwords and Billiard Walks in Affine Weyl Groups
Let $W$ be an irreducible affine Weyl group, and let $\mathsf{b}$ be a finite word over the alphabet of simple reflections of $W$. Fix a probability $p\in(0,1)$. For each integer $K\geq 0$, let $\mathsf{sub}_p(\mathsf{b}^K)$ be the random subword of $\mathsf{b}^K$ obtained by deleting each letter independently with probability $1-p$. Let $v_p(\mathsf{b}^K)$ be the element of $W$ represented by $\mathsf{sub}_p(\mathsf{b}^K)$. One can view $v_p(\mathsf{b}^K)$ geometrically as a random alcove; in many cases, this alcove can be seen as the location after a certain amount of time of a random billiard trajectory that, upon hitting a hyperplane in the Coxeter arrangement of $W$, reflects off of the hyperplane with probability $1-p$. We show that the asymptotic distribution of $v_p(\mathsf{b}^K)$ is a central spherical multivariate normal distribution with some variance $σ_{\mathsf{b}}^2$ depending on $\mathsf{b}$ and $p$. We provide a formula to compute $σ_{\mathsf{b}}^2$ that is remarkably simple when $\mathsf{b}$ contains only one occurrence of the simple reflection that is not in the associated finite Weyl group. As a corollary, we provide an asymptotic formula for $\mathbb{E}[\ell(v_p(\mathsf{b}^K))]$, the expected Coxeter length of $v_p(\mathsf{b}^K)$. For example, when $W=\widetilde A_{r}$ and $\mathsf{b}$ contains each simple reflection exactly once, we find that \[\lim_{K\to\infty}\frac{1}{\sqrt{K}}\mathbb{E}[\ell(v_p(\mathsf{b}^K))]=\sqrt{\frac{2}πr(r+1)\frac{p}{1-p}}.\]
Singular loci of Schubert varieties and the Lookup Conjecture in type $\tilde A_{2}$
We describe the loci of non-rationally smooth (nrs) points and of singular points for any non-spiral Schubert variety of $\tilde{A}_2$ in terms of the geometry of the (affine) Weyl group action on the plane $\mathbb{R}^2$. Together with the results of Graham and Li for spiral elements, this allows us to explicitly identify the maximal singular and nrs points in any Schubert variety of type $\tilde{A}_2$. Comparable results are not known for any other infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody flag variety (except for type $\tilde{A}_1$, where every Schubert variety is rationally smooth). As a consequence, we deduce that if $x$ is a point in a non-spiral Schubert variety $X_w$, then $x$ is nrs in $X_w$ if and only if there are more than $\dim X_w$ curves in $X_w$ through $x$ which are stable under the action of a maximal torus, as is true for Schubert varieties in (finite) type $A$. Combined with the work of Graham and Li for spiral Schubert varieties, this implies the Lookup Conjecture for $\tilde{A}_2$.
Combinatorial Curve Neighborhood of the Affine Flag Manifold of Type $A_{n-1}^1$
Let $\mathscr{X}$ be the affine flag manifold of Lie type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ where $n \geq 3$ and let $W_{\text{aff}}$ be the associated affine Weyl group. The moment graph for $\mathscr{X}$ encodes the torus fixed points (corresponding to elements of the affine Weyl group $W_{\text{aff}}$) and the torus stable curves in $\mathscr{X}$. Given a fixed point $u\in W_{\text{aff}}$ and a degree $\mathbf{d}=(d_0,d_1,...,d_{n-1})\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^{n}$, the combinatorial curve neighborhood is the set of maximal elements in the moment graph of $\mathscr{X}$ which can be reached from $u'\leq u$ by a chain of curves of total degree $\leq \mathbf{d}$. In this paper we give combinatorial formulas and algorithms for calculating these elements in $\mathscr{X}$.
Random Combinatorial Billiards and Stoned Exclusion Processes
We introduce and study several random combinatorial billiard trajectories. Such a system, which depends on a fixed parameter $p\in(0,1)$, models a beam of light that travels in a Euclidean space, occasionally randomly reflecting off of a hyperplane in the Coxeter arrangement of an affine Weyl group with some probability that depends on the side of the hyperplane that it hits. In one case, we (essentially) recover Lam's reduced random walk in the limit as $p$ tends to $0$. The investigation of our random billiard trajectories relies on an analysis of new finite Markov chains that we call stoned exclusion processes. These processes have remarkable stationary distributions determined by well-studied polynomials such as ASEP polynomials, inhomogeneous TASEP polynomials, and open boundary ASEP polynomials; in many cases, it was previously not known how to construct Markov chains with these stationary distributions. Using multiline queues, we analyze correlations in the stoned multispecies TASEP, allowing us to determine limit directions for reduced random billiard trajectories and limit shapes for new random growth processes for $n$-core partitions. Our perspective coming from combinatorial billiards naturally leads us to formulate a new variant of the ASEP on $\mathbb{Z}$ called the scan ASEP, which we deem interesting in its own right.
Generalised core partitions and Diophantine equations
We study generalised core partitions arising from affine Grassmannian elements in arbitrary Dynkin type. The corresponding notion of size is given by the atomic length in the sense of [CLG22]. In this paper, we first develop the theory for extended affine Weyl groups. In a series of applications, we give some remarkable parametrisations of the solutions of certain Diophantine equations resembling Pell's equation, by refining the results of [BN22] and [Alp14], and generalising them to further types.
Asymptotic Log-concavity of Dominant Lower Bruhat Intervals via Brunn--Minkowski Inequality
Björner and Ekedahl [Ann. of Math. (2), 170.2(2009), pp. 799--817] pioneered the study of length-counting sequences associated with parabolic lower Bruhat intervals in crystallographic Coxeter groups. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of these sequences in affine Weyl groups. Let $W$ be an affine Weyl group with corresponding Weyl group $W_f$ and ${}^{f}{W}$ be the set of minimal representatives for the right cosets $W_f \backslash W$. Let $t_λ$ be the translation by a dominant coroot lattice element $λ$ and ${}^{f}{b}_i^{t_λ}$ be the number of elements of length $i$ below $t_λ$ in the Bruhat order on ${}^{f}{W}$. We show that the sequence $({}^{f}{b}_i^{t_λ})_i$ is ''asymptotically log-concave'' in the following sense: The sequence of discrete measures $(\mathfrak{m}_k)_k$ constructed from the $k$-fold dilated sequence $({}^{f}{b}_i^{t_{kλ}})_i$, as $k$ tends to infinity, converges weakly to a continuous measure obtained from a polytope $P^λ$. Moreover, the sequence of step functions $(S_k)_k$ of $({}^{f}{b}_i^{t_{kλ}})_i$ converges uniformly to the density function of this continuous measure. By Brunn--Minkowski inequality, this density is log-concave.
Strange Expectations in Affine Weyl Groups
Our main result is a generalization, to all affine Weyl groups, of P. Johnson's proof of D. Armstrong's conjecture for the expected number of boxes in a simultaneous core. This extends earlier results by the second and third authors in simply-laced type. We do this by modifying and refining the appropriate notion of the "size" of a simultaneous core. In addition, we provide combinatorial core-like models for the coroot lattices in classical type and type $G_2$.
