Solution to an open problem on the computational complexity of immanant
Immanants are a class of generalized matrix functions associated with the irreducible characters of the symmetric group. Bürgisser [SIAM J. Comput., 30 (2000), pp. 1023--1040] proved that the computation of hook immanants and immanants corresponding to rectangular Young diagrams of polynomially growing width is VNP-complete under $p$-projections. And he posed an open problem: whether the family of immanants corresponding to rectangular Young diagrams of width $2$ is VNP-complete under $p$-projections. This paper gives a solution to this problem. We prove that, over any field of characteristic zero, the immanant families associated with rectangular Young diagrams of width $2$ and of length $2$ are both VNP-complete under $p$-projections.

The planar Hopf algebra of noncommutative multi-indices
We construct the planar Linares--Otto--Tempelmayr Hopf algebra, thereby filling the missing planar noncommutative multi-index corner in the square relating the LOT, Butcher--Connes--Kreimer, and Munthe-Kaas--Wright Hopf algebras. Starting from the free associative algebra on a weighted alphabet $\mathbb Z_{\ge -1}\times A$, we define an insertion-type product yielding a post-Lie structure on the Lie algebra generated by the linear span $V(A)$ of weight $-1$ monomials whose proper left prefixes all have nonnegative weight, and the Guin--Oudom construction then produces the planar LOT Hopf algebra. We introduce a planar tree fertility map from decorated planar rooted trees to monomials in $V(A)$, prove that it is a linear isomorphism, and obtain a natural Hopf algebra isomorphism with the Munthe-Kaas--Wright Hopf algebra. We further derive an explicit coproduct formula in terms of left-admissible cuts, establish the extraction-contraction coproduct, and construct a word symmetrization operator compatible with the classical tree symmetrization operator.

Infinitesimal Bialgebra on Planar Binary Trees
We construct a weight-zero infinitesimal bialgebra structure on the $\bk$-module spanned by planar binary trees, using the under product $\backslash$ of Aguiar--Sottileand a root-recursive coproduct $\DeltaLR$. We prove that $\DeltaLR$ is coassociative and satisfies the infinitesimal derivation rule with respect to $\backslash$, hence gives a unitary infinitesimal bialgebra distinct from the usual Loday--Ronco Hopf structure. We also obtain an elementary vertex-cut formula, establish freeness properties for unitary $(\backslash,\vee)$-algebras and unitary infinitesimal $(\backslash,\vee)$-bialgebras, and identify the construction with the infinitesimal coproduct transported from planar rooted forests.

Stability of nontrivial graph pairs
A graph pair $(Γ, Σ)$ is called stable if every automorphism of the direct product $Γ\timesΣ$ is induced componentwise by automorphisms of $Γ$ and $Σ$. A graph is twin-free if no two distinct vertices share the same neighbourhood in the graph. Two graphs $Γ$ and $Σ$ are coprime with respect to the direct product if there is no graph $Δ$ of order greater than $1$ such that $Γ\congΓ'\timesΔ$ and $Σ\congΣ'\timesΔ$ for some graphs $Γ'$ and $Σ'$. A graph pair $(Γ,Σ)$ is nontrivial if $Γ$ and $Σ$ are coprime connected twin-free graphs and exactly one of them is bipartite. In this paper, we prove that if $Γ$ is non-bipartite, stable, and factor-loopless, then each nontrivial graph pair $(Γ,Σ)$ is stable. This gives a partial answer to [Question~19, Qin, Xia and Zhou, Discrete Math., 113856, (2024)] and proves the factor-loopless case of [Conjecture~1.3, Wang, Qin and Xia, arXiv:2509.26170]. We also give affirmative answers to [Questions~3.5, 3.6, Gan, Liu and Xia, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 140--164, (2025)] and a negative answer to [Question~3.7, Gan, Liu and Xia, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 140--164, (2025)].

Fertility fibres and coproduct coefficients in the LOT Hopf algebra
We study fibres of the fertility map $Φ$ from decorated rooted trees to decorated multi-index monomials. For a multi-index $\mathbf{k}$ of weight $-1$, the fibre $\mathcal F_{\mathbf{k}}=\{\,t:Φ(t)=\xx^{\mathbf{k}}\,\}$ consists of all rooted trees with decoration--fertility profile $\mathbf{k}$. We consider its ordinary cardinality $F_{\mathbf{k}}$, its symmetry-weighted cardinality $W_{\mathbf{k}}$, and the coefficient mass $J_{\mathbf{k}}$ appearing in the tree expansion of the transposed embedding $\jmath$. We obtain an explicit formula and a functional equation for the weighted counts, and an exact multiset recursion together with a cycle-index functional equation for the ordinary counts. We also introduce coefficient generating functions for the lowering derivation $\bar\partial$, derive recursive and transport-array formulas for the corresponding coefficients, and use them to refine the admissible-cut formula for the coproduct in the LOT Hopf algebra.

Weighted $K$-$k$-Schur functions and their application to the $K$-$k$-Schur alternating conjecture
We introduce the new concept of weighted $K$-$k$-Schur functions -- a novel family within the broader class of Katalan functions -- that unifies and extends both $K$-$k$-Schur functions and closed $k$-Schur Katalan functions. This new notion exhibits a fundamental alternating property under certain conditions on the indexed $k$-bounded partitions. As a central application, we resolve the $K$-$k$-Schur alternating conjecture -- posed by Blasiak, Morse, and Seelinger in 2022 -- for a wide class of $k$-bounded partitions, including all strictly decreasing $k$-bounded partitions. Our results shed new light on the combinatorial structure of $K$-theoretic symmetric functions.

Lowering operators on $K$-$k$-Schur functions and a lowering operator formula for closed $K$-$k$-Schur functions
This paper gives a systematic study of the lowering operators acting on the $K$-$k$-Schur functions, motivated by the pivotal role played by the operators in the definition and study of Katalan functions. A lowering operator formula for closed $K$-$k$-Schur functions is obtained. As an application, a combinatorial proof is provided to a conjecture on closed $k$-Schur Katalan functions, posed by Blasiak, Morse and Seelinger, and recently proved by Ikeda, Iwao and Naito by a different method.
Integro-differential rings on species and derived structures
In the theory of species, differential as well as integral operators are known to arise in a natural way. In this paper, we shall prove that they precisely fit together in the algebraic framework of integro-differential rings, which are themselves an abstraction of classical calculus (incorporating its Fundamental Theorem). The results comprise (set) species as well as linear species. Localization of (set) species leads to the more general structure of modified integro-differential rings, previously employed in the algebraic treatment of Volterra integral equations. Furthermore, the ring homomorphism from species to power series via taking generating series is shown to be a (modified) integro-differential ring homomorphism. As an application, a topology and further algebraic operations are imported to virtual species from the general theory of integro-differential rings.

Alternating dual Pieri rule conjecture and $k$-branching conjecture of closed $k$-Schur Katalan functions
For closed $k$-Schur Katalan functions $\fgλ{k}$ with $k$ a positive integer and $λ$ a $k$-bounded partition, Blasiak, Morse and Seelinger proposed the alternating dual Pieri rule conjecture and the $k$-branching conjecture. In the present paper, we positively prove the first one for large enough $k$ and for strictly decreasing partitions $λ$ respectively, as well as the second one for strictly decreasing partitions $λ$.

Multi-quasisymmetric functions with semigroup exponents, Hopf algebras and Rota-Baxter algebras
Many years ago, G.-C.~Rota discovered a close connection between symmetric functions and Rota-Baxter algebras, and proposed to study generalizations of symmetric functions in the framework of Rota-Baxter algebras. Guided by this proposal, quasisymmetric functions from weak composition (instead of just compositions) were obtained from free Rota-Baxter algebras on one generator. This paper aims to generalize this approach to free Rota-Baxter algebras on multiple generators in order to obtain further generalizations of quasisymmetric functions. For this purpose and also for its independent interest, the space $\mathrm{MQSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions on multiple sequences of variables is defined, generalizing quasisymmetric functions and diagonally quasisymmetric functions of Aval, Bergeron and Bergeron. Linear bases of such multi-quasisymmetric functions are given by monomial multi-quasisymmetric functions and fundamental multi-quasisymmetric functions, the latter recover the fundamental $G^m$-quasisymmetric functions of Aval and Chapoton. Next introduced is the even more general notion of multi-quasisymmetric functions $\mathrm{MQSym}^E$ with exponents in a semigroup $E$, which also generalizes the quasisymmetric functions with semigroup exponents in a recent work. Through this approach, a natural Hopf algebraic structure is obtained on $\mathrm{MQSym}^E$. Finally, in support of Rota's proposal, the free commutative unitary Rota-Baxter algebra on a finite set is shown to be isomorphic to a scalar extension of $\mathrm{MQSym}^E$, a fact which in turn equips the free Rota-Baxter algebra with a Hopf algebra structure.

Free Novikov algebras and the Hopf algebra of decorated multi-indices
We propose a combinatorial formula for the coproduct in a Hopf algebra of decorated multi-indices that recently appeared in the literature, which can be briefly described as the graded dual of the enveloping algebra of the free Novikov algebra generated by the set of decorations. Similarly to what happens for the Hopf algebra of rooted forests, the formula can be written in terms of admissible cuts. We also prove a combinatorial formula for the extraction-contraction coproduct for undecorated multi-indices, in terms of a suitable notion of covering subforest.

Compatible structures on unary binary nonsymmetric operads with quadratic and cubic relations
Various compatibility conditions among replicated copies of operations in a given algebraic structure have appeared in broad contexts in recent years. Taking an uniform approach, this paper gives an operadic study of compatibility conditions for nonsymmetric operads with unary and binary operations, and homogeneous quadratic and cubic relations. This generalizes the previous studies for binary quadratic operads. We consider three compatibility conditions, namely the linear compatibility, matching compatibility and total compatibility, with increasingly strict restraints among the replicated copies. The linear compatibility is in Koszul dual to the total compatibility, while the matching compatibility is self dual. Further, each compatibility can be expressed in terms of either one or both of the two Manin square products.

Hopf algebra of multi-decorated rooted forests, free matching Rota-Baxter algebras and Gröbner-Shirshov bases
Published in Pacific J. Math. 317 (2022) 441-475 • View PublicationBIB
Recent advances in stochastic PDEs, Hopf algebras of typed trees and integral equations have inspired the study of algebraic structures with replicating operations. To understand their algebraic and combinatorial nature, we first use rooted forests with multiple decoration sets to construct free Hopf algebras with multiple Hochschild 1-cocycle conditions. Applying the universal property of the underlying operated algebras and the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases, we then construct free objects in the category of matching Rota-Baxter algebras which is a generalization of Rota-Baxter algebras to allow multiple Rota-Baxter operators. Finally the free matching Rota-Baxter algebras are equipped with a cocycle Hopf algebra structure.

Reynolds algebras and their free objects from bracketed words and rooted trees
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 225 (2021) 106766 • View PublicationBIB
The study of Reynolds algebras has its origin in the well-known work of O. Reynolds on fluid dynamics in 1895 and has since found broad applications. It also has close relationship with important linear operators such as algebra endomorphisms, derivations and Rota-Baxter operators. Many years ago G.~Birkhoff suggested an algebraic study of Reynolds operators, including the corresponding free algebras. We carry out such a study in this paper. We first provide examples and properties of Reynolds operators, including a multi-variant generalization of the Reynolds identity. We then construct the free Reynolds algebra on a set. For this purpose, we identify a set of bracketed words called Reynolds words which serves as the linear basis of the free Reynolds algebra. A combinatorial interpretation of Reynolds words is given in terms of rooted trees without super crowns. The closure of the Reynolds words under concatenation gives the algebra structure on the space spanned by Reynolds words. Then a linear operator is defined on this algebra such that the Reynolds identity and the desired universal property are satisfied.

Matching Rota-Baxter algebras, matching dendriform algebras and matching pre-Lie algebras
Published in J. Algebra, 552 (2020), 134-170 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a matching Rota-Baxter algebra motivated by the recent work on multiple pre-Lie algebras arising from the study of algebraic renormalization of regularity structures~[10,18]. This notion is also related to iterated integrals with multiple kernels and solutions of the associative polarized Yang-Baxter equation. Generalizing the natural connection of Rota-Baxter algebras with dendriform algebras to matching Rota-Baxter algebras , we obtain the notion of matching dendriform algebras. As in the classical case of one operation, matching Rota-Baxter algebras and matching dendriform algebras are related to matching pre-Lie algebras which coincide with the aforementioned multiple pre-Lie algebras. More general notions and results on matching tridendriform algebras and matching PostLie algebras are also obtained.

Free (tri)dendriform family algebras
Published in Journal of Algebra, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we first prove that a Rota-Baxter family algebra indexed by a semigroup induces an ordinary Rota-Baxter algebra structure on the tensor product with the semigroup algebra. We show that the same phenomenon arises for dendriform and tridendriform family algebras. Then we construct free dendriform family algebras in terms of typed decorated planar binary trees. Finally, we generalize typed decorated rooted trees to typed valently decorated Schröder trees and use them to construct free tridendriform family algebras.

A Hopf algebra on subgraphs of a graph
In this paper, we construct a bialgebraic and further a Hopf algebraic structure on top of subgraphs of a given graph. Further, we give the dual structure of this Hopf algebraic structure. We study the algebra morphisms induced by graph homomorphisms, and obtain a covariant functor from a graph category to an algebra category.

Classification of 2-extendable bipartite and cubic non-bipartite vertex-transitive graphs
In \cite{Chan95}, the authors classified the 2-extendable abelian Cayley graphs and posed the problem of characterizing all 2-extendable Cayley graphs. We first show that a connected bipartite Cayley (vertex-transitive) graph is 2-extendable if and only if it is not a cycle. It is known that a non-bipartite Cayley (vertex-transitive) graph is 2-extendable when it is of minimum degree at least five \cite{sun}. We next classify all 2-extendable cubic non-bipartite Cayley graphs and obtain that: a cubic non-bipartite Cayley graph with girth $g$ is 2-extendable if and only if $g\geq 4$ and it doesn't isomorphic to $Z_{4n}(1,4n-1,2n)$ or $Z_{4n+2}(2,4n,2n+1)$ with $n\geq 2$. Indeed, we prove a more stronger result that a cubic non-bipartite vertex-transitive graph with girth $g$ is 2-extendable if and only if $g\geq 4$ and it doesn't isomorphic to $Z_{4n}(1,4n-1,2n)$ or $Z_{4n+2}(2,4n,2n+1)$ with $n\geq 2$ or the Petersen graph.

Hopf algebras of rooted forests, cocyles and free Rota-Baxter algebras
Published in Journal of Mathematical Physics 2016, 101701, 16 pp • View PublicationBIB
The Hopf algebra and the Rota-Baxter algebra are the two algebraic structures underlying the algebraic approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization of perturbative quantum field theory. In particular the Hopf algebra of rooted trees serves as the "baby model" of Feynman graphs in their approach and can be characterized by certain universal properties involving a Hochschild 1-cocycle. Decorated rooted trees have also been applied to study Feynman graphs. We will continue the study of universal properties of various spaces of decorated rooted trees with such a 1-cocycle, leading to the concept of a cocycle Hopf algebra. We further apply the universal properties to equip a free Rota-Baxter algebra with the structure of a cocycle Hopf algebra or a cocycle bialgebra.
