Hunting The Poles in the Staircases
Motivated by applications to the fractional quantum Hall effect and, in particular, to the Bernevig-Haldane conjectures, we investigates the behavior of Macdonald polynomials under specializations of the form q a t b = 1. Our main focus is to explain, in a simple and purely combinatorial way, why certain nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials indexed by staircase vectors with steps of height a and width b remain regular at the specialization q a t b+1 = 1, despite the presence of potential poles in their rational coefficients. To this end, we introduce a set of combinatorial tools that track how poles are created or cancelled along paths in the Yang-Baxter graph. By carefully constructing paths from the zero vector to the staircase and analyzing the resulting denominators, we show that the absence of certain poles follows from intrinsic symmetries and cancellations encoded in the Yang-Baxter graph.

Cocycle weighted infinitesimal bialgebras and pre-Lie algebras on rooted trees
The concept of weighted infinitesimal bialgebras provides an algebraic framework for understanding the non-homogeneous associative Yang-Baxter equation. In this paper, we endow the space of decorated planar rooted forests with a two-parameters family of coproducts, making it into a weighted infinitesimal bialgebra. A combinatorial characterization of the coproducts is given via the notion of forest biideals. Furthermore, by constructing a bilinear symmetric form and introducing a new grafting operation on rooted forests, we describe the associated dual products. We also introduce the notion of the pair-weight 1-cocycle condition and investigate the universal properties of decorated planar rooted forests satisfying this condition. This leads to the definition of a weighted $Ω$-cocycle infinitesimal unitary bialgebra. As applications, we identify the initial object in the category of free cocycle infinitesimal unitary bialgebras on undecorated planar rooted forests, corresponding to the well-known noncommutative Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. In addition, we establish isomorphisms between different coproduct structures and construct a pre-Lie algebra structure on decorated planar rooted forests.
Lattice Models for Double Whittaker Polynomials and Motivic Chern Classes
We will describe solvable lattice models whose partition functions depend on two sets of variables, $x_1,\cdots,x_n$ and $y_1, y_2, \cdots $ that have different connections with the representation theory of $\text{GL}(n,F)$ where $F$ is a nonarchimedean local field. If the boundary conditions are chosen in one way, they are essentially the Motivic Chern classes that were used very effectively by Aluffi, Mihalcea, Schürmann and Su (AMSS) to study such problems. In particular, using this specialization we can obtain deformations $r_{u,v}$ of the Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials that were used by Bump, Nakasuji and Naruse to study matrix coefficients of intertwining operators (introduced by Casselman). Thus we are able see that the recursion formula for the $r_{u,v}$ is a reflection of the Yang-Baxter equation. On the other hand, with more general boundary conditions, specializing the parameters $y_i\to 0$ we recover colored lattice models that were previously used by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump and Gustafsson to represent Iwahori Whittaker functions on $GL(n,F)$. Thus we term the resulting two-variable-set family of functions as ``double Whittaker polynomials.''
How structure groups and monoids grow
The structure groups and monoids of set-theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter Equation can be regarded as deformations of free abelian groups resp. monoids. In this work, we obtain explicit formulae for the growth series of the structure groups and monoids of transposition and dihedral quandles, and of the structure groups of permutation quandles. These quandles provide important families of YBE solutions. The intricate nature of our formulae confirms that, while preserving many nice properties of free abelian groups, even the simplest structure groups and monoids are remarkably rich objects. We also establish some structural properties and easily computable normal forms for the monoids considered.

Colored Vertex Models and Interacting Reverse Plane Partitions
We study the coupling of pairs of reverse plane partitions of the same shape by assigning a certain local interaction between the reverse plane partitions. We show that they are in bijection with a certain Yang-Baxter integrable colored vertex model. By utilizing the Yang-Baxter equation for this colored vertex model, we are able to compute the generating function for the interacting pairs of reverse plane partitions. We also give a bijection between the coupled pairs of reverse plane partitions with the interaction strength set to zero and a single reverse plane partition of the same shape.

The Schützenberger involution and colored lattice models
Colored lattice models can be used to describe many different types of special functions of interest in both algebraic combinatorics and representation theory, for example Schur polynomials, nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials, and characters and Whittaker functions for representations of p-adic groups. A notable example is the metaplectic ice model of which there are actually two different variants: a Gamma and a Delta variant. These variants differ in key aspects but surprisingly produce equal partition functions, which are weighted sums over admissible configurations, and this equality is called the Gamma-Delta duality. The duality was used to prove the analytic continuation of certain multiple Dirichlet series and is highly non-trivial, especially since the number of configurations on each side of the equality can differ. In this paper we construct a new family of solvable, colored lattice models and prove that they are dual to existing lattice models in the literature, including the above metaplectic case and the lattice model for (non-metaplectic) Iwahori Whittaker functions together with its crystal limit for Demazure atoms for Cartan type A. The equality of partition functions is shown using Yang-Baxter equations involving R-matrices mixing lattice model rows of types Gamma and Delta. For the crystal Demazure lattice model we show that the duality refines to a weight-respecting bijection of states given by the Schützenberger involution on the associated Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns or semistandard Young tableaux. We also show how the individual steps exchanging two rows in the proof of the duality for the partition functions refines to Berenstein-Kirillov, or Bender-Knuth involutions.

Vertex models for the product of a permuted-basement Demazure atom and a Schur polynomial
We present the first positive combinatorial rule for expanding the product of a permuted-basement Demazure atom and a Schur polynomial. Special cases of permuted-basement Demazure atoms include Demazure atoms and characters. These cases have known tableau formulas for their expansions when multiplied by a Schur polynomial, due to Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg. We find a vertex model formula, giving a new rule even in these special cases, extending a technique introduced by Zinn-Justin for calculating Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We derive a coloured vertex model for permuted-basement Demazure atoms, inspired by Borodin and Wheeler's model for non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. We make this model compatible with an uncoloured vertex model for Schur polynomials, putting them in a single framework. Unlike previous work on structure coefficients via vertex models, a remarkable feature of our construction is that it relies on a Yang-Baxter equation that only holds for certain boundary conditions. However, this restricted Yang-Baxter equation is sufficient to show our result.
Quantum K--theory of Grassmannians from a Yang-Baxter algebra
In an earlier paper, two of the authors defined a $5$-vertex Yang-Baxter algebra (a Hopf algebra) which acts on the sum of the equivariant quantum K-rings of Grassmannians $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, where $k$ varies from $0$ to $n$. We construct geometrically defined operators on quantum K-rings describing this action. In particular, the $R$-matrix defining the Yang-Baxter algebra corresponds to the left Weyl group action. Most importantly, we use the `quantum=classical' statement for the quantum K-theory of Grassmannians to prove an explicit geometric interpretation of the action of generators of the Yang-Baxter algebra. The diagonal entries of the monodromy matrix are given by quantum K-multiplications by explicitly defined classes, and the off-diagonal entries by certain push-pull convolutions. We use this to find a quantization of the classes of fixed points in the quantum K-rings, corresponding to the Bethe vectors of the Yang-Baxter algebra. On each of the quantum K-rings, we prove that the two Frobenius structures (one from geometry, and the other from the integrable system construction) coincide. We discuss several applications, including an action of the extended affine Weyl group on the quantum K-theory ring (extending the Seidel action), a quantum version of the localization map (which is a ring homomorphism with respect to the quantum K-product), and a graphical calculus to multiply by Hirzebruch $λ_y$ classes of the dual of the tautological quotient bundle. In an Appendix we illustrate our results in the case when $n=2$.

Noncommutative chromatic quasi-symmetric functions, Macdonald polynomials, and the Yang-Baxter equation
As shown in our paper [JCTA 177 (2021), Paper No. 105305], the chromatic quasi-symmetric function of Shareshian-Wachs can be lifted to ${\bf WQSym}$, the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We investigate here its behaviour with respect to classical transformations of alphabets and propose a noncommutative analogue of Macdonald polynomials compatible with a noncommutative version of the Haglund-Wilson formula. We also introduce a multi-$t$ version of these noncommutative analogues. For rectangular partitions, their commutative images at $q=0$ appear to coincide with the multi-$t$ Hall-Littlewood functions introduced in [Lett. Math. Phys. 35 (1995), 359]. This leads us to conjecture that for rectangular partitions, multi-$t$ Macdonald polynomials are obtained as equivariant traces of certain Yang-Baxter elements of Hecke algebras. We also conjecture that all (ordinary) Macdonald polynomials can be obtained in this way. We conclude with some remarks relating various aspects of quasi-symmetric chromatic functions to calculations in Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that all modular relations are given by the product formula of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis.

Rational symmetric functions from the Izergin-Korepin 19-vertex model
Starting from the Izergin-Korepin 19-vertex model in the quadrant, we introduce two families of rational multivariate functions $F_S$ and $G_S$; these are in direct analogy with functions introduced by Borodin in the context of the higher-spin 6-vertex model in the quadrant. We prove that $F_S(x_1,\dots,x_N;z)$ and $G_S(y_1,\dots,y_M;z)$ are symmetric functions in their alphabets $(x_1,\dots,x_N)$ and $(y_1,\dots,y_M)$, and pair together to yield a Cauchy identity. Both properties are consequences of the Yang-Baxter equation of the model. We show that, in an appropriate limit of the spectral parameters $z$, $F_S$ tends to a stable symmetric function denoted $H_S$. This leads to a simplified version of the Cauchy identity with a fully factorized kernel, and suggests self-duality of the functions $H_S$. We obtain a symmetrization formula for the function $F_S(x_1,\dots,x_N;z)$, which exhibits its symmetry in $(x_1,\dots,x_N)$. In contrast to the 6-vertex model, where $F^{6{\rm V}}_S(x_1,\dots,x_N;z)$ is cast as a sum over the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_N$, the symmetrization formula in the 19-vertex model is over a larger set of objects that we define; we call these objects 2-permutations. As a byproduct of the proof of our symmetrization formula, we obtain explicit formulas for the monodromy matrix elements of the 19-vertex model in a basis that renders them totally spatially symmetric.

Hook-length Formulas for Skew Shapes via Contour Integrals and Vertex Models
The number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape $λ/μ$ can be computed as a sum over excited diagrams inside $λ$. Excited diagrams are in bijection with certain lozenge tilings, with flagged semistandard tableaux and also nonintersecting lattice paths inside $λ$. We give two new proofs of a multivariate generalization of this formula, which allow us to extend the setup beyond standard Young tableaux and the underlying Schur symmetric polynomials. The first proof uses multiple contour integrals. The second one interprets excited diagrams as configurations of a six-vertex model at a free fermion point, and derives the formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape from the Yang-Baxter equation.

Extended Rota-Baxter algebras, diagonally colored Delannoy paths and Hopf algebras
The Rota-Baxter operator and the modified Rota-Baxter operator on various algebras are both important in mathematics and mathematical physics. The former is originated from the integration-by-parts formula and probability with applications to the renormalization of quantum field theory and the classical Yang-Baxter equation. The latter originated from Hilbert transformations with applications to ergodic theory and the modified Yang-Baxter equation. Their merged form, called the extended Rota-Baxter operators, has also found interesting applications recently. This paper presents a systematic study of the extended Rota-Baxter operator. We show that while extended Rota-Baxter operators have properties similar to Rota-Baxter operators; they provide a linear structure that unifies Rota-Baxter operators and modified Rota-Baxter operators. Examples of extended Rota-Baxter operators are also given, especially from polynomials and Laurent series due to their importance in ($q$-)integration and the renormalization in quantum field theory. We then construct free commutative extended Rota-Baxter operators by a generalization of the quasi-shuffle product. The multiplication of the initial object in the category of commutative extended Rota-Baxter operators allows a combinatorial interpretation in terms of a color-enrichment of Delannoy paths. Applying its universal property, we equip a free commutative extended Rota-Baxter operators with a coproduct which has a cocycle condition, yielding a bialgebraic structure. We then show that this bialgebra on a free extended Rota-Baxter operators possesses an increasing filtration and a connectedness property, culminating at a Hopf algebraic structure on a free commutative extended Rota-Baxter operator.

Colored stochastic vertex models with U-turn boundary
In this paper, we introduce a class of colored stochastic vertex models with U-turn right boundary. The vertex weights in the models satisfy the Yang-Baxter equations and the reflection equation. Based on these equations, we derive recursive relations for partition functions of the models.

Colored Interacting Particle Systems on the Ring: Stationary Measures from Yang-Baxter Equation
Recently, there has been much progress in understanding stationary measures for colored (also called multi-species or multi-type) interacting particle systems, motivated by asymptotic phenomena and rich underlying algebraic and combinatorial structures (such as nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials). In this paper, we present a unified approach to constructing stationary measures for most of the known colored particle systems on the ring and the line, including (1) the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (multispecies ASEP, or mASEP); (2) the q-deformed Totally Asymmetric Zero Range Process (TAZRP) also known as the q-Boson particle system; (3) the q-deformed Pushing Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (q-PushTASEP). Our method is based on integrable stochastic vertex models and the Yang-Baxter equation. We express the stationary measures as partition functions of new "queue vertex models" on the cylinder. The stationarity property is a direct consequence of the Yang-Baxter equation. For the mASEP on the ring, a particular case of our vertex model is equivalent to the multiline queues of Martin (arXiv:1810.10650). For the colored q-Boson process and the q-PushTASEP on the ring, we recover and generalize known stationary measures constructed using multiline queues or other methods by Ayyer-Mandelshtam-Martin (arXiv:2011.06117, arXiv:2209.09859), and Bukh-Cox (arXiv:1912.03510). Our proofs of stationarity use the Yang-Baxter equation and bypass the Matrix Product Ansatz used for the mASEP by Prolhac-Evans-Mallick (arXiv:0812.3293). On the line and in a quadrant, we use the Yang-Baxter equation to establish a general colored Burke's theorem, which implies that suitable specializations of our queue vertex models produce stationary measures for particle systems on the line. We also compute the colored particle currents in stationarity.

Six-Vertex Model and Random Matrix Distributions
We survey the connections between the six-vertex (square ice) model of 2d statistical mechanics and random matrix theory. We highlight the same universal probability distributions appearing on both sides, and also indicate related open questions and conjectures. We present full proofs of two asymptotic theorems for the six-vertex model: in the first one the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and GUE-corners process appear; the second one leads to the Tracy-Widom distribution $F_2$. While both results are not new, we found shorter transparent proofs for this text. On our way we introduce the key tools in the study of the six-vertex model, including the Yang-Baxter equation and the Izergin-Korepin formula.

On the Structure of Set-Theoretic Polygon Equations
Published in SIGMA 20 (2024), 051, 30 pages • View PublicationBIB
Polygon equations generalize the prominent pentagon equation in very much the same way as simplex equations generalize the famous Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, they appeared as ''cocycle equations'' in Street's category theory associated with oriented simplices. Whereas the $(N-1)$-simplex equation can be regarded as a realization of the higher Bruhat order $B(N,N-2)$, the $N$-gon equation is a realization of the higher Tamari order $T(N,N-2)$. The latter and its dual $\tilde T(N,N-2)$, associated with which is the dual $N$-gon equation, have been shown to arise as suborders of $B(N,N-2)$ via a ''three-color decomposition''. There are two different reductions of $T(N,N-2)$ and $\tilde T(N,N-2)$, to ${T(N-1,N-3)}$, respectively $\tilde T(N-1,N-3)$. In this work, we explore the corresponding reductions of (dual) polygon equations, which lead to relations between solutions of neighboring (dual) polygon equations. We also elaborate (dual) polygon equations in this respect explicitly up to the octagon equation.

A universal-algebra and combinatorial approach to the set-theoretic Yang-Baxter equation
We introduce a new variety of set-theoretic non-associative algebras, Płonka bi-magmas, to describe and classify all solutions of the set-theoretic Yang-Baxter (YB) equation of Baaj-Long-Skandalis (BLS) type. We also study new classes of YB-solutions (bi-connected, simple), and classify the BLS-solutions that fit into those classes. There are only countably many isomorphism classes of simple BLS-solutions, for instance, and they are all describable in terms of the odometer transformations familiar from ergodic theory. Placing Drinfel'd's problem of classifying the set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation in a universal-algebra context with a combinatorial flavor, we also prove the existence of adjunctions between various categories of solutions.

When the Tracy-Singh product of matrices represents a certain operation on linear operators
Published in Communications in Algebra (2024) • View PublicationBIB
Given two linear transformations, with representing matrices $A$ and $B$ with respect to some bases, it is not clear, in general, whether the Tracy-Singh product of the matrices $A$ and $B$ corresponds to a particular operation on the linear transformations. Nevertheless, it is not hard to show that in the particular case that each matrix is a square matrix of order of the form $n^2$, $n>1$, and is partitioned into $n^2$ square blocks of order $n$, then their Tracy-Singh product, $A \boxtimes B$, is similar to $A \otimes B$, and the change of basis matrix is a permutation matrix. In this note, we prove that in the special case of linear operators induced from set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, the Tracy-Singh product of their representing matrices is the representing matrix of the linear operator obtained from the direct product of the set-theoretic solutions.

Skew left braces and 2-reductive solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation
We study 2-reductive non-involutive non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We give a combinatorial construction of any such solution of any (even infinite) size. We also prove that solutions associated to a skew left brace are 2-reductive if and only if the skew left brace is nilpotent of class 2. Moreover, all such skew left braces are actually bi-skew left braces. We focus on these structures and we give several equivalent properties characterizing solutions associated to bi-skew left braces.

Cycle matrices: A combinatorial approach to the set-theoretic solutions of the Quantum Yang-Baxter Equation
An $n\times n$ matrix $M=[m_{ij}]$ with $m_{ij}\in U_n=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ will be called a cycle matrix if $(U_n,\cdot)$ is a cycle set, where $i\cdot j=m_{ij}$. We study these matrices in this article. Using these matrices, we give some recipes to construct solutions, which include the multipermutation level $2$ solutions. As an application of these, we construct a multi-permutation solution of level $r$ for all $r\geq 1$. Our method gives alternate proof that the class of permutation groups of solutions contains all finite abelian groups.
