Colored Fermionic Vertex Models and Symmetric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this text we introduce and analyze families of symmetric functions arising as partition functions for colored fermionic vertex models associated with the quantized affine Lie superalgebra $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$. We establish various combinatorial results for these vertex models and symmetric functions, which include the following. (1) We apply the fusion procedure to the fundamental $R$-matrix for $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$ to obtain an explicit family of vertex weights satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. (2) We define families of symmetric functions as partition functions for colored, fermionic vertex models under these fused weights. We further establish several combinatorial properties for these symmetric functions, such as branching rules and Cauchy identities. (3) We show that the Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon (LLT) polynomials arise as special cases of these symmetric functions. This enables us to show both old and new properties about the LLT polynomials, including Cauchy identities, contour integral formulas, stability properties, and branching rules under a certain family of plethystic transformations. (4) A different special case of our symmetric functions gives rise to a new family of polynomials called factorial LLT polynomials. We show they generalize the LLT polynomials, while also satisfying a vanishing condition reminiscent of that satisfied by the factorial Schur functions. (5) By considering our vertex model on a cylinder, we obtain fermionic partition function formulas for both the symmetric and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. (6) We prove combinatorial formulas for the coefficients of the LLT polynomials when expanded in the modified Hall-Littlewood basis, as partition functions for a $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (2 | n) \big)$ vertex model.
A vertex model for LLT polynomials

We describe a novel Yang-Baxter integrable vertex model. From this vertex model we construct a certain class of partition functions that we show are equal to the LLT polynomials of Lascoux, Leclerc, and Thibon. Using the vertex model formalism, we give alternate proofs of many properties of these polynomials, including symmetry and a Cauchy identity.

Refined Cauchy identity for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $\mathsf{F}_λ$ arise in the context of $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models, and are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials. We obtain a refined Cauchy identity expressing a weighted sum of the product of two $\mathsf{F}_λ$'s as a determinant. The determinant is of Izergin-Korepin type: it is the partition function of the six vertex model with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof of equality of two partition functions is based on the Yang-Baxter equation. We rewrite our Izergin-Korepin type determinant in a different form which includes one of the sets of variables in a completely symmetric way. This determinantal identity might be of independent interest, and also allows to directly link the spin Hall-Littlewood rational functions with (the Hall-Littlewood particular case of) the interpolation Macdonald polynomials. In a different direction, a Schur expansion of our Izergin-Korepin type determinant yields a deformation of Schur symmetric polynomials. In the spin-$\frac12$ specialization, our refined Cauchy identity leads to a summation identity for eigenfunctions of the ASEP (Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process), a celebrated stochastic interacting particle system in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. This produces explicit integral formulas for certain multitime probabilities in ASEP.
Frozen Pipes: Lattice Models for Grothendieck Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce families of two-parameter multivariate polynomials indexed by pairs of partitions $v,w$ -- biaxial double $(β,q)$-Grothendieck polynomials -- which specialize at $q=0$ and $v=1$ to double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials from torus-equivariant connective K-theory. Initially defined recursively via divided difference operators, our main result is that these new polynomials arise as partition functions of solvable lattice models. Moreover, the associated quantum group of the solvable model for polynomials in $n$ pairs of variables is a Drinfeld twist of the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{n+1})$ $R$-matrix. By leveraging the resulting Yang-Baxter equations of the lattice model, we show that these polynomials simultaneously generalize double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials and dual double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials for arbitrary permutations. We then use properties of the model and Yang-Baxter equations to reprove Fomin-Kirillov's Cauchy identity for $β$-Grothendieck polynomials, generalize it to a new Cauchy identity for biaxial double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials, and prove a new branching rule for double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials.

Drinfeld-Manin solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation coming from cube complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The most common geometric interpretation of the Yang-Baxter equation is by braids, knots and relevant Reidemeister moves. So far, cubes were used for connections with the third Reidemeister move only. We will show that there are higher-dimensional cube complexes solving the $D$-state Yang-Baxter equation for arbitrarily large $D$. More precisely, we introduce explicit constructions of cube complexes covered by products of $n$ trees and show that these cube complexes lead to new solutions of the Yang-Baxter equations.

Symmetries of stochastic colored vertex models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discover a new property of the stochastic colored six-vertex model called flip-invariance. We use it to show that for a given collection of observables of the model, any transformation that preserves the distribution of each individual observable also preserves their joint distribution. This generalizes recent shift-invariance results of Borodin-Gorin-Wheeler. As limiting cases, we obtain similar statements for the Brownian last passage percolation, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, the Airy sheet, and directed polymers. Our proof relies on an equivalence between the stochastic colored six-vertex model and the Yang-Baxter basis of the Hecke algebra. We conclude by discussing the relationship of the model with Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and positroid varieties in the Grassmannian.

Shift-invariance for vertex models and polymers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a symmetry in a variety of integrable stochastic systems: Certain multi-point distributions of natural observables are unchanged under a shift of a subset of observation points. The property holds for stochastic vertex models, (1+1)d directed polymers in random media, last passage percolation, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, and the Airy sheet. In each instance it leads to computations of previously inaccessible joint distributions. The proofs rely on a combination of the Yang-Baxter integrability of the inhomogeneous colored stochastic six-vertex model and Lagrange interpolation. We also show that a simplified (Gaussian) version of our theorems is related to the invariance in law of the local time of the Brownian bridge under the shift of the observation level.

Matching Rota-Baxter algebras, matching dendriform algebras and matching pre-Lie algebras
Published in J. Algebra, 552 (2020), 134-170 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a matching Rota-Baxter algebra motivated by the recent work on multiple pre-Lie algebras arising from the study of algebraic renormalization of regularity structures~[10,18]. This notion is also related to iterated integrals with multiple kernels and solutions of the associative polarized Yang-Baxter equation. Generalizing the natural connection of Rota-Baxter algebras with dendriform algebras to matching Rota-Baxter algebras , we obtain the notion of matching dendriform algebras. As in the classical case of one operation, matching Rota-Baxter algebras and matching dendriform algebras are related to matching pre-Lie algebras which coincide with the aforementioned multiple pre-Lie algebras. More general notions and results on matching tridendriform algebras and matching PostLie algebras are also obtained.

Mapping TASEP back in time
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain a new relation between the distributions $μ_t$ at different times $t\ge 0$ of the continuous-time TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process) started from the step initial configuration. Namely, we present a continuous-time Markov process with local interactions and particle-dependent rates which maps the TASEP distributions $μ_t$ backwards in time. Under the backwards process, particles jump to the left, and the dynamics can be viewed as a version of the discrete-space Hammersley process. Combined with the forward TASEP evolution, this leads to a stationary Markov dynamics preserving $μ_t$ which in turn brings new identities for expectations with respect to $μ_t$. The construction of the backwards dynamics is based on Markov maps interchanging parameters of Schur processes, and is motivated by bijectivizations of the Yang-Baxter equation. We also present a number of corollaries, extensions, and open questions arising from our constructions.
Colored Vertex Models and Iwahori Whittaker Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a recursive method for computing all values of a basis of Whittaker functions for unramified principal series invariant under an Iwahori or parahoric subgroup of a split reductive group $G$ over a nonarchimedean local field $F$. Structures in the proof have surprising analogies to features of certain solvable lattice models. In the case $G=\mathrm{GL}_r$ we show that there exist solvable lattice models whose partition functions give precisely all of these values. Here `solvable' means that the models have a family of Yang-Baxter equations which imply, among other things, that their partition functions satisfy the same recursions as those for Iwahori or parahoric Whittaker functions. The R-matrices for these Yang-Baxter equations come from a Drinfeld twist of the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(r|1))$, which we then connect to the standard intertwining operators on the unramified principal series. We use our results to connect Iwahori and parahoric Whittaker functions to variations of Macdonald polynomials.

Yang-Baxter random fields and stochastic vertex models
Bijectivization refines the Yang-Baxter equation into a pair of local Markov moves which randomly update the configuration of the vertex model. Employing this approach, we introduce new Yang-Baxter random fields of Young diagrams based on spin $q$-Whittaker and spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. We match certain scalar Markovian marginals of these fields with (1) the stochastic six vertex model; (2) the stochastic higher spin six vertex model; and (3) a new vertex model with pushing which generalizes the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP introduced recently by Corwin-Matveev-Petrov (arXiv:1811.06475). Our matchings include models with two-sided stationary initial data, and we obtain Fredholm determinantal expressions for the $q$-Laplace transforms of the height functions of all these models. Moreover, we also discover difference operators acting diagonally on spin $q$-Whittaker or (stable) spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions.

Nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials via integrable vertex models
Published • View PublicationBIB
Starting from an integrable rank-$n$ vertex model, we construct an explicit family of partition functions indexed by compositions $μ= (μ_1,\dots,μ_n)$. Using the Yang-Baxter algebra of the model and a certain rotation operation that acts on our partition functions, we show that they are eigenfunctions of the Cherednik-Dunkl operators $Y_i$ for all $1 \leq i \leq n$, and are thus equal to nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $E_μ$. Our partition functions have the combinatorial interpretation of ensembles of coloured lattice paths which traverse a cylinder. Applying a simple bijection to such path ensembles, we show how to recover the well-known combinatorial formula for $E_μ$ due to Haglund-Haiman-Loehr.

Classification of spin models for Yang-Baxter planar algebras
In this paper, we classify all spin models for singly-generated Yang-Baxter planar algebras in terms of certain highly regular graphs. Using Liu's classification of singly generated Yang-Baxter planar algebras, this classifies all spin models for the Jones polynomial, the Bisch-Jones planar algebras, and the Kauffman polynomial. This simplifies and clarifies Jaeger's classification of spin models for the Kauffman polynomial. In particular, we completely avoid the opaque and computationally-taxing concept of "formal self-duality"; we also explain the numerous exceptional cases in Jaeger's classification by demonstrating a new, discrete two-parameter family of spin models for the Bisch-Jones planar algebras.
Colored five-vertex models and Demazure atoms
Type A Demazure atoms are pieces of Schur functions, or sets of tableaux whose weights sum to such functions. Inspired by colored vertex models of Borodin and Wheeler, we will construct solvable lattice models whose partition functions are Demazure atoms; the proof of this makes use of a Yang-Baxter equation for a colored five-vertex model. As a biproduct, we construct Demazure atoms on Kashiwara's $\mathcal{B}_\infty$ crystal and give new algorithms for computing Lascoux-Schützenberger keys.

A Note on Specializations of Grothendieck Polynomials
Buch and Rimányi proved a formula for specializations of double Grothendieck polynomials based on the Yang-Baxter equation related to the degenerate Hecke algebra. A geometric proof was found by Yong and Woo by constructing a Gröbner basis for the Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals. In this note, we give an elementary proof for this formula by using only divided difference operators.

Yang-Baxter field for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Employing bijectivisation of summation identities, we introduce local stochastic moves based on the Yang-Baxter equation for $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2})$. Combining these moves leads to a new object which we call the spin Hall-Littlewood Yang-Baxter field - a probability distribution on two-dimensional arrays of particle configurations on the discrete line. We identify joint distributions along down-right paths in the Yang-Baxter field with spin Hall-Littlewood processes, a generalization of Schur processes. We consider various degenerations of the Yang-Baxter field leading to new dynamic versions of the stochastic six vertex model and of the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process.

The free-fermionic $C^{(1)}_2$ loop model, double dimers and Kashaev's recurrence
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A. Volume 158, August 2018, Pages 407-448 • View PublicationBIB
We study a two-color loop model known as the $C^{(1)}_2$ loop model. We define a free-fermionic regime for this model, and show that under this assumption it can be transformed into a double dimer model. We then compute its free energy on periodic planar graphs. We also study the star-triangle relation or Yang-Baxter equations of this model, and show that after a proper parametrization they can be summed up into a single relation known as Kashaev's relation. This is enough to identify the solution of Kashaev's relation as the partition function of a $C^{(1)}_2$ loop model with some boundary conditions, thus solving an open question of Kenyon and Pemantle about the combinatorics of Kashaev's relation.

Self-avoiding walk on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with Yang-Baxter weights: universality of critical fugacity and 2-point function
Published in Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Probab. Statist. 56(4): 2281-2300 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We consider a self-avoiding walk model (SAW) on the faces of the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. This walk can traverse the same face twice, but crosses any edge at most once. The weight of a walk is a product of local weights: each square visited by the walk yields a weight that depends on the way the walk passes through it. The local weights are parametrised by angles $θ\in[\fracπ{3},\frac{2π}{3}]$ and satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation. The self-avoiding walk is embedded in the plane by replacing the square faces of the grid with rhombi with corresponding angles. By means of the Yang-Baxter transformation, we show that the 2-point function of the walk in the half-plane does not depend on the rhombic tiling (i.e. on the angles chosen). In particular, this statistic coincides with that of the self-avoiding walk on the hexagonal lattice. Indeed, the latter can be obtained by choosing all angles $θ$ equal to $\fracπ{3}$. For the hexagonal lattice, the critical fugacity of SAW was recently proved to be equal to $1+\sqrt{2}$. We show that the same is true for any choice of angles. In doing so, we also give a new short proof to the fact that the partition function of self-avoiding bridges in a strip of the hexagonal lattice tends to 0 as the width of the strip tends to infinity. This proof also yields a quantitative bound on the convergence.
Stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and half-line open ASEP
Published in Duke Math. J. 167, no. 13 (2018), 2457-2529 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the positive integers with an open boundary condition. We show that, when starting devoid of particles and for a certain boundary condition, the height function at the origin fluctuates asymptotically (in large time $τ$) according to the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution on the $τ^{1/3}$ scale. This is the first example of KPZ asymptotics for a half-space system outside the class of free-fermionic/determinantal/Pfaffian models. Our main tool in this analysis is a new class of probability measures on Young diagrams that we call half-space Macdonald processes, as well as two surprising relations. The first relates a special (Hall-Littlewood) case of these measures to the half-space stochastic six-vertex model (which further limits to ASEP) using a Yang-Baxter graphical argument. The second relates certain averages under these measures to their half-space (or Pfaffian) Schur process analogs via a refined Littlewood identity.

$t$-Unique Reductions for Mészáros's Subdivision Algebra
Published in SIGMA 14 (2018), 078, 34 pages • View PublicationBIB
Fix a commutative ring $\mathbf{k}$, two elements $β,α\in\mathbf{k}$ and a positive integer $n$. Let $\mathcal{X}$ be the polynomial ring over $\mathbf{k}$ in the $n(n-1)/2$ indeterminates $x_{i,j}$ for all $1\leq i<j\leq n$. Consider the ideal $\mathcal{J}$ of $\mathcal{X}$ generated by all polynomials of the form $x_{i,j}x_{j,k}-x_{i,k}(x_{i,j}+x_{j,k}+β)-α$ for $1\leq i<j<k\leq n$. The quotient algebra $\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{J}$ (at least for a certain choice of $\mathbf{k}$, $β$ and $α$) has been introduced by Karola Mészáros as a commutative analogue of Anatol Kirillov's quasi-classical Yang-Baxter algebra. A monomial in $\mathcal{X}$ is said to be pathless if it has no divisors of the form $x_{i,j}x_{j,k}$ with $1\leq i<j<k\leq n$. The residue classes of these pathless monomials span the $\mathbf{k}$-module $\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{J}$, but (in general) are $\mathbf{k}$-linearly dependent. Recently, the study of Grothendieck polynomials has led Laura Escobar and Karola Mészáros to defining a $\mathbf{k}$-algebra homomorphism $D$ from $\mathcal{X}$ into the polynomial ring $\mathbf{k}[t_{1},t_{2},\ldots,t_{n-1}]$ that sends each $x_{i,j}$ to $t_{i}$. We show the following fact (generalizing a conjecture of Mészáros): If $p\in\mathcal{X}$, and if $q\in\mathcal{X}$ is a $\mathbf{k}$-linear combination of pathless monomials satisfying $p\equiv q\operatorname{mod}\mathcal{J}$, then $D(q)$ does not depend on $q$ (as long as $β$, $α$ and $p$ are fixed). Thus, reducing a $p\in\mathcal{X}$ modulo $\mathcal{J}$ may lead to different results depending on the choices made in the reduction process, but all of them become identical once $D$ is applied. We also find an actual basis of the $\mathbf{k}$-module $\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{J}$, using what we call forkless monomials.
