The hook fusion procedure and its generalisations
The fusion procedure provides a way to construct new solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. In the case of the symmetric group the fusion procedure has been used to construct diagonal matrix elements using a decomposition of the Young diagram into its rows or columns. We present a new construction which decomposes the diagram into hooks, the great advantage of this is that it minimises the number of auxiliary parameters needed in the procedure. We go on to use the hook fusion procedure to find diagonal matrix elements computationally and calculate supporting evidence to a previous conjecture. We are motivated by the construction of certain elements that allow us to generate representations of the symmetric group and single out particular irreducible components. In this way we may construct higher representations of the symmetric group from elementary ones. We go some way to generalising the hook fusion procedure by considering other decompositions of Young diagrams, specifically into ribbons. Finally, we adapt our construction to the quantum deformation of the symmetric group algebra known as the Hecke algebra.

Set theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, graphs and computations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend our recent work on set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter or braid relations with new results about their automorphism groups, strong twisted unions of solutions and multipermutation solutions. We introduce and study graphs of solutions and use our graphical methods for the computation of solutions of finite order and their automorphisms. Results include a detailed study of solutions of multipermutation level 2.

Non-Symmetric Hall-Littlewood Polynomials
Using the action of the Yang-Baxter elements of the Hecke algebra on polynomials, we define two bases of polynomials in n variables. The Hall-Littlewood polynomials are a subfamily of one of them. For q=0, these bases specialize into the two families of classical Key polynomials (i.e. Demazure characters for type A). We give a scalar product for which the two bases are adjoint of each other.

Exact Solution of the Six-Vertex Model with Domain Wall Boundary Conditions. Disordered Phase
Published • View PublicationBIB
The six-vertex model, or the square ice model, with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) has been introduced and solved for finite $N$ by Korepin and Izergin. The solution is based on the Yang-Baxter equations and it represents the free energy in terms of an $N\times N$ Hankel determinant. Paul Zinn-Justin observed that the Izergin-Korepin formula can be re-expressed in terms of the partition function of a random matrix model with a nonpolynomial interaction. We use this observation to obtain the large $N$ asymptotics of the six-vertex model with DWBC in the disordered phase. The solution is based on the Riemann-Hilbert approach and the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method. As was noticed by Kuperberg, the problem of enumeration of alternating sign matrices (the ASM problem) is a special case of the the six-vertex model. We compare the obtained exact solution of the six-vertex model with known exact results for the 1, 2, and 3 enumerations of ASMs, and also with the exact solution on the so-called free fermion line. We prove the conjecture of Zinn-Justin that the partition function of the six-vertex model with DWBC has the asymptotics, $Z_N\sim CN^κe^{N^2f}$ as $N\to\infty$, and we find the exact value of the exponent $κ$.

On the Combinatorics of Crystal Graphs, I. Lusztig's Involution
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we continue the development of a new combinatorial model for the irreducible characters of a complex semisimple Lie group. This model, which will be referred to as the alcove path model, can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. It leads to an extensive generalization of the combinatorics of irreducible characters from Lie type A (where the combinatorics is based on Young tableaux, for instance) to arbitrary type. The main results of this paper are: (1) a combinatorial description of the crystal graphs corresponding to the irreducible representations (this result includes a transparent proof, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of the fact that the mentioned description does not depend on the choice involved in our model); (2) a combinatorial realization of Lusztig's involution on the canonical basis (this involution exhibits the crystals as self-dual posets, corresponds to the action of the longest Weyl group element on an irreducible representation, and generalizes Schutzenberger's involution on tableaux); (3) an analog for arbitrary root systems, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of Schutzenberger's sliding algorithm, which is also known as jeu de taquin (this algorithm has many applications to the representation theory of the Lie algebra of type A).

On Expected Factors in Reduced Decompositions in Type B
Published • View PublicationBIB
The expected number of Yang-Baxter moves appearing in a reduced decomposition of the longest element of the Coxeter group of type B_n is computed to be 2-4/n. For the same element, the expected number of 0101 or 1010 factors appearing in a reduced decomposition is 2/(n^2-2).

Matched pairs approach to set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study set-theoretic solutions $(X,r)$ of the Yang-Baxter equations on a set $X$ in terms of the induced left and right actions of $X$ on itself. We give a characterization of involutive square-free solutions in terms of cyclicity conditions. We characterise general solutions in terms of abstract matched pair properties of the associated monoid $S(X,r)$ and we show that $r$ extends as a solution $(S(X,r),r_S)$. Finally, we study extensions of solutions both directly and in terms of matched pairs of their associated monoids. We also prove several general results about matched pairs of monoids $S$ of the required type, including iterated products $S\bowtie S\bowtie S$ equivalent to $r_S$ a solution, and extensions $(S\bowtie T,r_{S\bowtie T})$. Examples include a general `double' construction $(S\bowtie S,r_{S\bowtie S})$ and some concrete extensions, their actions and graphs based on small sets.

Yang-Baxter bases of 0-Hecke algebras and representation theory of 0-Ariki-Koike-Shoji algebras
Published in Advances in Mathematics 205 (2006), 504-548 • View PublicationBIB
After reformulating the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras in an appropriate family of Yang-Baxter bases, we investigate certain specializations of the Ariki-Koike algebras, obtained by setting q=0 in a suitably normalized version of Shoji's presentation. We classify the simple and projective modules, and describe restrictions, induction products, Cartan invariants and decomposition matrices. This allows us to identify the Grothendieck rings of the towers of algebras in terms of certain graded Hopf algebras known as the Mantaci-Reutenauer descent algebras, and Poirier quasi-symmetric functions. We also describe the Ext-quivers, and conclude with numerical tables.

On some noncommutative algebras related to K-theory of flag varieties, part I
For any Lie algebra of classical type or type $G_2$ we define a $K$-theoretic analog of Dunkl's elements, the so-called truncated {\it Ruijsenaars-Schneider-Macdonald elements}, $RSM$-elements for short, in the corresponding {\it Yang-Baxter group}, which form a commuting family of elements in the latter. For the root systems of type $A$ we prove that the subalgebra of the {\it bracket algebra} generated by the RSM-elements is isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring of the flag variety. In general, we prove that the subalgebra generated by the {\it images} of the RSM-elements in the corresponding {\it Nichols-Woronowicz algebra} is canonically isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring of the corresponding flag varieties of classical type or of type $G_2$. In other words, we construct the ``Nichols-Woronowicz algebra model'' for the Grothendieck Calculus on Weyl groups of classical type or type $G_2,$ providing a partial generalization of some recent results by Y. Bazlov. We also give a conjectural description (theorem for type $A$) of a commutative subalgebra generated by the {\it truncated RSM-elements} in the bracket algebra for the classical root systems. Our results provide a proof and generalizations of recent conjecture and result by C. Lenart and A. Yong for the root system of type $A$.

Boxed Plane Partitions as an Exactly Solvable Boson Model
Published • View PublicationBIB
Plane partitions naturally appear in many problems of statistical physics and quantum field theory, for instance, in the theory of faceted crystals and of topological strings on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In this paper a connection is made between the exactly solvable model with the boson dynamical variables and a problem of enumeration of boxed plane partitions - three dimensional Young diagrams placed into a box of a finite size. The correlation functions of the boson model may be considered as the generating functionals of the Young diagrams with the fixed heights of its certain columns. The evaluation of the correlation functions is based on the Yang-Baxter algebra. The analytical answers are obtained in terms of determinants and they can also be expressed through the Schur functions.

On a class of double cosets in reductive algebraic groups
We study a class of double coset spaces R_A \backslash G_1 \times G_2 /R_C, where G_1 and G_2 are connected reductive algebraic groups, and R_A and R_C are certain spherical subgroups of G_1 \times G_2 obtained by ``identifying'' Levi factors of parabolic subgroups in G_1 and G_2. Such double cosets naturally appear in the symplectic leaf decompositions of Poisson homogeneous spaces of complex reductive groups with the Belavin-Drinfeld Poisson structures. They also appear in orbit decompositions of the De Concini-Procesi compactifications of semi-simple groups of adjoint type. We find explicit parametrizations of the double coset spaces and describe the double cosets as homogeneous spaces of R_A \times R_C. We further show that all such double cosets give rise to set-theoretical solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation on unipotent algebraic groups.

Affine Weyl groups in K-theory and representation theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit combinatorial Chevalley-type formula for the equivariant K-theory of generalized flag varieties G/P which is a direct generalization of the classical Chevalley formula. Our formula implies a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible representations of G and, more generally, for the Demazure characters. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart of the Littelmann path model, and has several advantages. Our construction is given in terms of a certain R-matrix, that is, a collection of operators satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. It reduces to combinatorics of decompositions in the affine Weyl group and enumeration of saturated chains in the Bruhat order on the (nonaffine) Weyl group. Our model easily implies several symmetries of the coefficients in the Chevalley-type formula. We also derive a simple formula for multiplying an arbitrary Schubert class by a divisor class, as well as a dual Chevalley-type formula. The paper contains other applications and examples.

Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients via Yang-Baxter Equation
Published in IMRN 2000, No. 14, 741-774 • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper is to present an interpretation for the decomposition of the tensor product of two or more irreducible representations of GL(N) in terms of a system of quantum particles. Our approach is based on a certain scattering matrix that satisfies a Yang-Baxter type equation. The corresponding piecewise-linear transformations of parameters give a solution to the tetrahedron equation. These transformation maps are naturally related to the dual canonical bases for modules over the quantum enveloping algebra $U_q(sl_n)$. A byproduct of our construction is an explicit description for the cone of Kashiwara's parametrizations of dual canonical bases. This solves a problem posed by Berenstein and Zelevinsky. We present a graphical interpretation of the scattering matrices in terms of web functions, which are related to honeycombs of Knutson and Tao.
Mixed Bruhat operators and Yang-Baxter equations for Weyl groups
We introduce and study a family of operators which act in the span of a Weyl group $W$ and provide a multi-parameter solution to the quantum Yang-Baxter equations of the corresponding type. Our operators generalize the "quantum Bruhat operators" that appear in the explicit description of the multiplicative structure of the (small) quantum cohomology ring of $G/B$. The main combinatorial applications concern the "tilted Bruhat order," a graded poset whose unique minimal element is an arbitrarily chosen element $w\in W$. (The ordinary Bruhat order corresponds to the case $w=1$.) Using the mixed Bruhat operators, we prove that these posets are lexicographically shellable, and every interval in a tilted Bruhat order is Eulerian. This generalizes well known results of Verma, Bjorner, Wachs, and Dyer.

Another proof of the alternating sign matrix conjecture

Robbins conjectured, and Zeilberger recently proved, that there are 1!4!7!...(3n-2)!/n!/(n+1)!/.../(2n-1)! alternating sign matrices of order n. We give a new proof of this result using an analysis of the six-vertex state model (also called square ice) based on the Yang-Baxter equation.
