Relative numbers of ends and quasi-median graphs
Given a finitely generated $G$ and a subgraph $H \leq G$, the relative number of ends $e(G,H)$ is the number of ends of a Schreier graph $\mathrm{Sch}(G,H)$ and the number of coends $\tilde{e}(G,H)$ is the maximal number of $H$-infinite components of the complement of a neighbourhood of $H$ in $G$. Generalising Sageev's characterisation of codimension-one subgroups in terms of actions on CAT(0) cube complexes, we characterise the number of relative ends and the number of coends of a pair $(G,H)$ in terms of actions on quasi-median graphs.
Geometry of ample/lopsided sets
Lopsided sets were introduced by Jim Lawrence in 1983 when he studied the subsets of $\{-1,+1\}^E$ that encode the intersection pattern of a convex set $K$ with the orthants of ${\mathbb R}^E$. Lopsided sets have been independently rediscovered by several other authors, in particular by Andreas Dress in 1995, who called them \emph{ample} sets. Dress defined ample sets as the set families satisfying equality in a combinatorial inequality, which holds for all set families. In a previous article we characterized ample sets in various combinatorial and graph-theoretical ways. In this paper we study geometric realizations of ample sets as cubihedra (cube complexes), which yields several new characterizations. One such characterization establishes that the cubihedra of ample sets endowed with the intrinsic $\ell_1$-metric are exactly the isometric subspaces of $\ell_1$-spaces (which we call, weakly convex sets). We also view the barycenter maps of faces of cubihedra of ample sets as collections of $\{ \pm 1, 0\}$-sign vectors and, in analogy with the characterization of oriented matroids by the covectors and the cocircuits. Moreover, we characterize the collections of $\{ \pm 1, 0\}$-sign vectors corresponding to barycenter maps of all faces and all maximal faces of an ample set. Furthermore, we show that any ample set $\covectors\subseteq \{ -1,+1\}^E$ is realizable as the intersection pattern of a weakly convex set $K$ with the orthants of ${\mathbb R}^E$. All this testifies that the concept of ample sets is quite natural in the context of cube complexes.

Left regular bands with symmetry
The representation theory of left regular band semigroup algebras is well-studied and known to have close connections with combinatorial topology, as established in the work of Margolis--Saliola--Steinberg ('15, '21). In this paper, we investigate the representation theory of the invariant subalgebras of left regular band semigroup algebras carrying the action of a finite group through the lens of group-equivariant combinatorial topology. We characterize when the invariant subalgebra is semisimple or commutative and examine the equivariant structure of the Peirce components of the semigroup algebra. For CW left regular bands, we interpret these Peirce components in terms of the equivariant topology of intervals in the support semilattice, yielding the Cartan invariants of the invariant subalgebras of left regular bands associated to CAT(0)-cube complexes. We also give a topological formula for the Peirce components for left regular bands with hereditary algebras. Finally, in specializing to left regular bands associated to geometric lattices, we explore generalizations of the Desarménién--Wachs derangement representation and their connections to Markov chains.

Cell structure of bipartite mediangle graphs
Genevois introduced and investigated mediangle graphs as a common generalization of median graphs (1-sekeleta of CAT(0) cube complexes) and Coxeter graphs (Cayley graphs of Coxeter systems) and studied groups acting on them. He asked if mediangle graphs can be endowed with the structure of a contractible cell complex. We answer this in the affirmative by proving that bipartite mediangle graphs are tope graphs of finitary Complexes of Oriented Matroids (COMs). We also show that the oriented matroids (OMs) constituting the cells of COMs arising from bipartite mediangle graphs are exactly the simplicial OMs.

A discrete model for surface configuration spaces
One of the primary methods of studying the topology of configurations of points in a graph and configurations of disks in a planar region has been to examine discrete combinatorial models arising from the underlying spaces. Despite the success of these models in the graph and disk settings, they have not been constructed for the vast majority of surface configuration spaces. In this paper, we construct such a model for the ordered configuration space of $m$ points in an oriented surface $Σ$. More specifically, we prove that if we give $Σ$ a certain cube complex structure $K$, then the ordered configuration space of $m$ points in $Σ$ is homotopy equivalent to a subcomplex of $K^{m}$

Cubulating the sphere with many facets
For each $d\geq 3$ we construct cube complexes homeomorphic to the $d$-sphere with $n$ vertices in which the number of facets (assuming $d$ constant) is $Ω(n^{5/4})$. This disproves a conjecture of Kalai's stating that the number of faces (of all dimensions) of cubical spheres is maximized by the boundaries of neighbourly cubical polytopes. The conjecture was already known to be false for $d=3$, $n=64$. Our construction disproves it for all $d\geq 3$ and $n$ sufficiently large. Moreover, since neighborly cubical polytopes have roughly $n (\log n)^{d/2}$ facets, we show that even the order of growth (at least for the number of facets) in the conjecture is wrong.
Homotopy types of complexes of hyperplanes in quasi-median graphs and applications to right-angled Artin groups
In this article, we prove that, given two finite connected graphs $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$, if the two right-angled Artin groups $A(Γ_1)$ and $A(Γ_2)$ are quasi-isometric, then the infinite pointed sums $\bigvee_\mathbb{N} Γ_1^{\bowtie}$ and $\bigvee_\mathbb{N} Γ_2^{\bowtie}$ are homotopy equivalent, where $Γ_i^{\bowtie}$ denotes the simplicial complex whose vertex-set is $Γ_i$ and whose simplices are given by joins. These invariants are extracted from a study, of independent interest, of the homotopy types of several complexes of hyperplanes in quasi-median graphs (such as one-skeleta of CAT(0) cube complexes). For instance, given a quasi-median graph $X$, the \emph{crossing complex} $\mathrm{Cross}^\triangle(X)$ is the simplicial complex whose vertices are the hyperplanes (or $θ$-classes) of $X$ and whose simplices are collections of pairwise transverse hyperplanes. When $X$ has no cut-vertex, we show that $\mathrm{Cross}^\triangle(X)$ is homotopy equivalent to the pointed sum of the links of all the vertices in the prism-completion $X^\square$ of $X$.
Markov chains, CAT(0) cube complexes, and enumeration: monotone paths in a strip mix slowly
We prove that two natural Markov chains on the set of monotone paths in a strip mix slowly. To do so, we make novel use of the theory of non-positively curved (CAT(0)) cubical complexes to detect small bottlenecks in many graphs of combinatorial interest. Along the way, we give a formula for the number c_m(n) of monotone paths of length n in a strip of height m. In particular we compute the exponential growth constant of c_m(n) for arbitrary m, generalizing results of Williams for m=2, 3.

Polyhedral CAT(0) metrics on locally finite complexes
We prove the arborescence of any locally finite complex that is $CAT(0)$ with a polyhedral metric for which all vertex stars are convex. In particular locally finite $CAT(0)$ cube complexes or equilateral simplicial complexes are arborescent. Moreover, a triangulated manifold admits a $CAT(0)$ polyhedral metric if and only if it admits arborescent triangulations. We prove eventually that every locally finite complex which is $CAT(0)$ with a polyhedral metric has a barycentric subdivision which is arborescent.

Folding median graphs
Extending Stallings' foldings of trees, we show in this article that every parallel-preserving map between median graphs factors as an isometric embedding through a sequence of elementary transformations which we call foldings and swellings. This new construction proposes a unified point of view on Beeker and Lazarovich's work on folding pocsets and on Ben-Zvi, Kropholler, and Lyman's work on folding nonpositively curved cube complexes.

Boundary rigidity of finite CAT(0) cube complexes
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 169:352-366, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we prove that finite CAT(0) cube complexes can be reconstructed from their boundary distances (computed in their 1-skeleta). This result was conjectured by Haslegrave, Scott, Tamitegama, and Tan (2023). The reconstruction of a finite cell complex from the boundary distances is the discrete version of the boundary rigidity problem, which is a classical problem from Riemannian geometry. In the proofs, we use the bijection between CAT(0) cube complexes and median graphs and the corner peelings of median graphs.
Boundary rigidity of 3D CAT(0) cube complexes
The boundary rigidity problem is a classical question from Riemannian geometry: if $(M, g)$ is a Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, is the geometry of $M$ determined up to isometry by the metric $d_g$ induced on the boundary $\partial M$? In this paper, we consider a discrete version of this problem: can we determine the combinatorial type of a finite cube complex from its boundary distances? As in the continuous case, reconstruction is not possible in general, but one expects a positive answer under suitable contractibility and non-positive curvature conditions. Indeed, in two dimensions Haslegrave gave a positive answer to this question when the complex is a finite quadrangulation of the disc with no internal vertices of degree less than $4$. We prove a $3$-dimensional generalisation of this result: the combinatorial type of a finite CAT(0) cube complex with an embedding in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be reconstructed from its boundary distances. Additionally, we prove a direct strengthening of Haslegrave's result: the combinatorial type of any finite 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex can be reconstructed from its boundary distances.

Tree-like graphings, wallings, and median graphings of equivalence relations
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e64 • View PublicationBIB
We prove several results showing that every locally finite Borel graph whose large-scale geometry is "tree-like" induces a treeable equivalence relation. In particular, our hypotheses hold if each component of the original graph either has bounded tree-width or is quasi-isometric to a tree, answering a question of Tucker-Drob. In the latter case, we moreover show that there exists a Borel quasi-isometry to a Borel forest, under the additional assumption of (componentwise) bounded degree. We also extend these results on quasi-treeings to Borel proper metric spaces. In fact, our most general result shows treeability of countable Borel equivalence relations equipped with an abstract wallspace structure on each class obeying some local finiteness conditions, which we call a proper walling. The proof is based on the Stone duality between proper wallings and median graphs, i.e., CAT(0) cube complexes. Finally, we strengthen the conclusion of treeability in these results to hyperfiniteness in the case where the original graph has one (selected) end per component, generalizing the same result for trees due to Dougherty--Jackson--Kechris.

Higher dimensional digraphs from cube complexes and their spectral theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define $k$-dimensional digraphs and initiate a study of their spectral theory. The $k$-dimensional digraphs can be viewed as generating graphs for small categories called $k$-graphs. Guided by geometric insight, we obtain several new series of $k$-graphs using cube complexes covered by Cartesian products of trees, for $k \geq 2$. These $k$-graphs can not be presented as virtual products, and constitute novel models of such small categories. The constructions yield rank-$k$ Cuntz-Krieger algebras for all $k\geq 2$. We introduce Ramanujan $k$-graphs satisfying optimal spectral gap property, and show explicitly how to construct the underlying $k$-digraphs.

Drinfeld-Manin solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation coming from cube complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The most common geometric interpretation of the Yang-Baxter equation is by braids, knots and relevant Reidemeister moves. So far, cubes were used for connections with the third Reidemeister move only. We will show that there are higher-dimensional cube complexes solving the $D$-state Yang-Baxter equation for arbitrarily large $D$. More precisely, we introduce explicit constructions of cube complexes covered by products of $n$ trees and show that these cube complexes lead to new solutions of the Yang-Baxter equations.

Large facing tuples and a strengthened sector lemma
Published in Tunisian J. Math. 4 (2022) 55-86 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a strengthened sector lemma for irreducible, finite-dimensional, locally finite, essential, cocompact CAT(0) cube complexes under the additional hypothesis that the complex is \emph{hyperplane-essential}; we prove that every quarterspace contains a halfspace. In aid of this, we present simplified proofs of known results about loxodromic isometries of the contact graph, avoiding the use of disc diagrams. This paper has an expository element; in particular, we collect results about cube complexes proved by combining Ramsey's theorem and Dilworth's theorem. We illustrate the use of these tricks with a discussion of the Tits alternative for cubical groups, and ask some questions about "quantifying" statements related to rank-rigidity and the Tits alternative.

On graphic arrangement groups
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 126 (2021), Paper No. 102130, 22 pp • View PublicationBIB
A finite simple graph $Γ$ determines a quotient $P_Γ$ of the pure braid group, called a graphic arrangement group. We analyze homomorphisms of these groups defined by deletion of sets of vertices, using methods developed in prior joint work with R. Randell. We show that, for a $K_4$-free graph $Γ$, a product of deletion maps is injective, embedding $P_Γ$ in a product of free groups. Then $P_Γ$ is residually free, torsion-free, residually torsion-free nilpotent, and acts properly on a CAT(0) cube complex. We also show $P_Γ$ is of homological finiteness type $F_{m-1}$, but not $F_m$, where $m$ is the number of copies of $K_3$ in $Γ$, except in trivial cases. The embedding result is extended to graphs whose 4-cliques share at most one edge, giving an injection of $P_Γ$ into the product of pure braid groups corresponding to maximal cliques of $Γ$. We give examples showing that this map may inject in more general circumstances. We define the graphic braid group $B_Γ$ as a natural extension of $P_Γ$ by the automorphism group of $Γ$, and extend our homological finiteness result to these groups.
Medians in median graphs and their cube complexes in linear time
Published • View PublicationBIB
The median of a set of vertices $P$ of a graph $G$ is the set of all vertices $x$ of $G$ minimizing the sum of distances from $x$ to all vertices of $P$. In this paper, we present a linear time algorithm to compute medians in median graphs, improving over the existing quadratic time algorithm. We also present a linear time algorithm to compute medians in the $\ell_1$-cube complexes associated with median graphs. Median graphs constitute the principal class of graphs investigated in metric graph theory and have a rich geometric and combinatorial structure, due to their bijections with CAT(0) cube complexes and domains of event structures. Our algorithm is based on the majority rule characterization of medians in median graphs and on a fast computation of parallelism classes of edges ($Θ$-classes or hyperplanes) via Lexicographic Breadth First Search (LexBFS). To prove the correctness of our algorithm, we show that any LexBFS ordering of the vertices of $G$ satisfies the following fellow traveler property of independent interest: the parents of any two adjacent vertices of $G$ are also adjacent. Using the fast computation of the $Θ$-classes, we also compute the Wiener index (total distance) of $G$ in linear time and the distance matrix in optimal quadratic time.

Weak Modularity and $\widetilde{A}_n$ Buildings
The $\widetilde{A}_n$ Coxeter groups are known to not be systolic or cocompactly cubulated for $n\geq 3$. We prove that these groups act geometrically on weakly modular graphs, a weak notion of nonpositive curvature generalizing the 1-skeleta of $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes and systolic complexes. To prove weak modularity we describe the canonical emeddings of the 1-skeleta of $\widetilde{A}_n$ Coxeter complexes into the Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We also prove weak modularity for buildings of type $\widetilde{A}_3$.

The isometry group of phylogenetic tree space is $S_n$
A phylogenetic tree is an acyclic graph with distinctly labeled leaves, whose internal edges have a positive weight. Given a set of n leaves, the collection of all phylogenetic trees with this leaf set can be assembled into a metric cube complex known as phylogenetic tree space, or Billera-Holmes-Vogtmann tree space. In this largely combinatorial paper, we show that the isometry group of this space is the symmetric group on n elements. This fact is relevant to distance-based analyses of phylogenetic tree sets.
