Unfriendly partitions of locally finite Borel graphs
We answer in the negative the question of Thomas, recorded by Conley, Conley--Marks--Unger, and Conley--Tamuz, of whether every locally finite Borel graph admits a Borel unfriendly partition. Our counterexample has unbounded degree and is closed on a zero-dimensional Polish space; its connectedness relation is hyperfinite, and its components are bipartite and one-ended. Every unfriendly colouring is proper. Together with a parity obstruction, this rigidity rules out Baire measurable colourings that are unfriendly on a comeager set, and measurable colourings that are unfriendly almost everywhere for a quasi-invariant probability of finite average degree. In the positive direction, a Borel graph of maximum degree at most four admits a Borel unfriendly colouring whenever each component contains a cycle or a vertex of degree at most two. This reduces the Borel problem in maximum degree three to cubic forests and, with a theorem of Conley--Marks--Unger, gives Baire measurable unfriendly colourings for all Borel graphs of maximum degree at most four.
Borel graphs generated by commuting functions
In this paper we study Borel graphs generated by finitely many commuting Borel functions. We give a geometric analysis of the free part of such graphs based on marker sets and marker regions. Assuming the existence of $r$-forward-independent hitting sets with bounded syndeticity, we obtain marker decompositions of the free part into rootless and rooted regions with controlled geometry. As applications, we derive finite Borel asymptotic dimension and hyperfiniteness, and obtain upper bounds for Borel edge chromatic numbers which improve previously known results. For the case in which each of the commuting Borel functions is bounded-to-one, we verify the existence of $r$-forward-independent hitting sets with syndeticity $Cr$ for some constant $C$. This gives another proof of a recent theorem of Naryshkin-Shinko-Weilacher-Yu, and is used to show that if one of the commuting Borel functions is injective and another one is bounded-to-one and exactly even-to-one, then the graph has a Borel perfect matching.
Measurable matchings in unbalanced graphs
Let $G$ be a locally finite multigraph that is bipartite and "unbalanced," meaning that it has a nontrivial bipartition $(A,B)$ with $°(x) > °(y)$ for all $x \in A$ and $y \in B$. We explore matchings in such graphs through the lens of descriptive set theory. In particular, we show that when $G$ is Borel and $μ$ is a Borel probability measure on its vertex set, there is a Borel matching in $G$ that covers $μ$-almost every vertex in $A$. This was previously known only under the assumption that $μ$ is $G$-invariant, which we eliminate using a novel probabilistic approach. We also describe various extra conditions that imply the existence of a Borel matching covering every vertex in $A$. Along the way, we confirm a conjecture of the first and third named authors concerning the existence of Borel independent complete sections in Borel graphs of finite asymptotic separation index.
In addition to their intrinsic interest, our results have applications to various other topics, such as edge-colorings, balanced orientations, and equidecomposition theory for group actions. For example, we show that the measurable edge-chromatic number of every Borel multigraph with finite maximum degree $Δ$ is at most $\lfloor\frac{3Δ}{2}\rfloor$, matching Shannon's optimal bound for finite multigraphs. Another example is that paradoxical Borel group actions with finite asymptotic separation index admit paradoxical decompositions with Borel pieces. This refines a result of Marks and Unger.
Tracks on planar complexes and soficity
We show that every probability-measure-preserving equivalence relation generated by a locally-finite Borel graph with planar connected components is sofic in the sense of Elek--Lippner. In particular, every unimodular random planar graph is sofic. This removes the additional assumptions in the works of Angel--Hutchcroft--Nachmias--Ray and Timár on the soficity of unimodular random planar maps and graphs. To prove this, we investigate Borel simplicial complexes with planar components and approximate them by treeable covering spaces. To construct these coverings, we use a canonical family of tracks on planar simplicial complexes introduced by Dunwoody.
Borel fractional perfect matchings in quasi-transitive amenable graphs
We show that if a locally finite Borel graph with quasitransitive amenable components admits a fractional perfect matching, it will admit a Borel fractional perfect matching. In particular, if a countable amenable quasitransitive graph admits a fractional perfect matching then its Bernoulli graph admits a Borel fractional perfect matching.
Complexity of Finite Borel Asymptotic Dimension
We show that the set of locally finite Borel graphs with finite Borel asymptotic dimension is $\mathbfΣ^1_2$-complete. The result is based on a combinatorial characterization of finite Borel asymptotic dimension for graphs generated by a single Borel function. As an application of this characterization, we classify the complexities of digraph homomorphism problems for this class of graphs.
Quasi-treeings are treeable: a streamlined proof
We present a streamlined exposition of a construction by R. Chen, A. Poulin, R. Tao, and A. Tserunyan, which proves the treeability of equivalence relations generated by any locally-finite Borel graph such that each component is a quasi-tree. More generally, we show that if each component of a locally-finite Borel graph admits a finitely-separating Borel family of cuts, then we may 'canonically' replace each component of the graph by a tree of special ultrafilter-like objects on cuts called orientations; moreover, if the cuts are dense towards ends, then the union of these trees is a Borel treeing.
Measurable Regular Subgraphs
We show that every $d$-regular bipartite Borel graph admits a Baire measurable $k$-regular spanning subgraph if and only if $d$ is odd or $k$ is even. This gives the first example of a locally checkable coloring problem which is known to have a Baire measurable solution on Borel graphs but not a computable solution on highly computable graphs. We also prove the analogous result in the measure setting for hyperfinite graphs.
Embedding Borel graphs into grids of asymptotically optimal dimension
Let $G$ be a Borel graph all of whose finite subgraphs embed into the $d$-dimensional grid with diagonals. We show that then $G$ itself admits a Borel embedding into the Schreier graph of a free Borel action of $\mathbb Z^{O(d)}$. This strengthens an earlier result of the authors, in which $O(d)$ is replaced by $O(ρ\log ρ)$, where $ρ$ is the polynomial growth rate of $G$.
Borel Combinatorics of Abelian Group Actions
We study the free part of the Bernoulli action of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ for $n\geq 2$ and the Borel combinatorics of the associated Schreier graphs. We construct orthogonal decompositions of the spaces into marker sets with various additional properties. In general, for Borel graphs $Γ$ admitting weakly orthogonal decompositions, we show that $χ_B(Γ)\leq 2χ(Γ)-1$ under some mild assumptions. As a consequence, we deduce that the Borel chromatic number for $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^n})$ is $3$ for all $n\geq 2$. Weakly orthogonal decompositions also give rise to Borel unlayered toast structures. We also construct orthogonal decompositions of $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^2})$ with strong topological regularity, in particular with all atoms homeomorphic to a disk. This allows us to show that there is a Borel perfect matching for $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^n})$ for all $n\geq 2$ and that there is a Borel lining of $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^2})$.
Borel versions of the Local Lemma and LOCAL algorithms for graphs of finite asymptotic separation index
Asymptotic separation index is a parameter that measures how easily a Borel graph can be approximated by its subgraphs with finite components. In contrast to the more classical notion of hyperfiniteness, asymptotic separation index is well-suited for combinatorial applications in the Borel setting. The main result of this paper is a Borel version of the Lovász Local Lemma -- a powerful general-purpose tool in probabilistic combinatorics -- under a finite asymptotic separation index assumption. As a consequence, we show that locally checkable labeling problems that are solvable by efficient randomized distributed algorithms admit Borel solutions on bounded degree Borel graphs with finite asymptotic separation index. From this we derive a number of corollaries, for example a Borel version of Brooks's theorem for graphs with finite asymptotic separation index.

We prove several results showing that every locally finite Borel graph whose large-scale geometry is "tree-like" induces a treeable equivalence relation. In particular, our hypotheses hold if each component of the original graph either has bounded tree-width or is quasi-isometric to a tree, answering a question of Tucker-Drob. In the latter case, we moreover show that there exists a Borel quasi-isometry to a Borel forest, under the additional assumption of (componentwise) bounded degree. We also extend these results on quasi-treeings to Borel proper metric spaces. In fact, our most general result shows treeability of countable Borel equivalence relations equipped with an abstract wallspace structure on each class obeying some local finiteness conditions, which we call a proper walling. The proof is based on the Stone duality between proper wallings and median graphs, i.e., CAT(0) cube complexes. Finally, we strengthen the conclusion of treeability in these results to hyperfiniteness in the case where the original graph has one (selected) end per component, generalizing the same result for trees due to Dougherty--Jackson--Kechris.
Borel Vizing's Theorem for Graphs of Subexponential Growth
We show that every Borel graph $G$ of subexponential growth has a Borel proper edge-coloring with $Δ(G) + 1$ colors. We deduce this from a stronger result, namely that an $n$-vertex (finite) graph $G$ of subexponential growth can be properly edge-colored using $Δ(G) + 1$ colors by an $O(\log^\ast n)$-round deterministic distributed algorithm in the $\mathsf{LOCAL}$ model, where the implied constants in the $O(\cdot)$ notation are determined by a bound on the growth rate of $G$.
Large-scale geometry of Borel graphs of polynomial growth
We study graphs of polynomial growth from the perspective of asymptotic geometry and descriptive set theory. The starting point of our investigation is a theorem of Krauthgamer and Lee who showed that every connected graph of polynomial growth admits an injective contraction mapping to $(\mathbb Z^n, \|\cdot\|_\infty)$ for some $n\in\mathbb N$. We strengthen and generalize this result in a number of ways. In particular, answering a question of Papasoglu, we construct coarse embeddings from graphs of polynomial growth to $\mathbb Z^n$. Moreover, we only require $n$ to be linear in the asymptotic polynomial growth rate of the graph; this confirms a conjecture of Levin and Linial, London, and Rabinovich "in the asymptotic sense." (The exact form of the conjecture was refuted by Krauthgamer and Lee.) All our results are proved for Borel graphs, which allows us to settle a number of problems in descriptive combinatorics. Roughly, we prove that graphs generated by free Borel actions of $\mathbb Z^n$ are universal for the class of Borel graphs of polynomial growth. This provides a general method for extending results about $\mathbb Z^n$-actions to all Borel graphs of polynomial growth. For example, an immediate consequence of our main result is that all Borel graphs of polynomial growth are hyperfinite, which answers a well-known question in the area. As another illustration, we show that Borel graphs of polynomial growth support a certain combinatorial structure called toast. An important technical tool in our arguments is the notion of padded decomposition from computer science, which is closely related to the concept of asymptotic dimension due to Gromov. Along the way we find an alternative, probabilistic proof of a theorem of Papasoglu that graphs of asymptotic polynomial growth rate $ρ<\infty$ have asymptotic dimension at most $ρ$ and establish the same bound in the Borel setting.

Let $(X,τ)$ be a Polish space with Borel probability measure $μ,$ and $G$ a locally finite one-ended Borel graph on $X.$ We show that $G$ admits a Borel one-ended spanning tree generically. If $G$ is induced by a free Borel action of an amenable (resp., polynomial growth) group then we show the same result $μ$-a.e. (resp., everywhere). Our results generalize recent work of Timár, as well as of Conley, Gaboriau, Marks, and Tucker-Drob, who proved this in the probability measure preserving setting. We apply our theorem to find Borel orientations in even degree graphs and measurable and Baire measurable perfect matchings in regular bipartite graphs, refining theorems that were previously only known to hold for measure preserving graphs. In particular, we prove that bipartite one-ended $d$-regular Borel graphs admit Baire measurable perfect matchings.
A note on measure-theoretic domatic partitions
We show that if $(X,μ)$ is a standard probability space, then every $μ$-preserving $\aleph_0$-regular Borel graph on $X$ admits a $μ$-measurable vertex $\aleph_0$-coloring in which every vertex sees every color in its neighborhood.

We study the position of the computable setting in the "common theory of locality" developed in arXiv:2106.02066 and arXiv:2204.09329 for local problems on $Δ$-regular trees, $Δ\in ω$. We show that such a problem admits a computable solution on every highly computable $Δ$-regular forest if and only if it admits a Baire measurable solution on every Borel $Δ$-regular forest. We also show that if such a problem admits a computable solution on every computable maximum degree $Δ$ forest then it admits a continuous solution on every maximum degree $Δ$ Borel graph with appropriate topological hypotheses, though the converse does not hold.

In this paper, we show that Frucht's theorem holds in Borel setting. More specifically, we prove that any standard Borel group can be realized as the Borel automorphism group of a Borel graph. A slight modification of our construction also yields the following result in topological setting: Any Polish group can be realized as the homeomorphic automorphism group of a $\mathbf{Δ^0_2}$-graph on a Polish space.
Ramsey, expanders, and Borel chromatic numbers
We construct bounded degree acyclic Borel graphs with large Borel chromatic number using a graph arising from Ramsey theory and limits of expander sequences.

Let $X$ be a Polish space with Borel probability measure $μ,$ and let $G$ be a Borel graph on $X$ with no odd cycles and maximum degree $Δ(G).$ We show that the Baire measurable edge chromatic number of $G$ is at most $Δ(G)+1$, and if $G$ is $μ$-hyperfinite then the $μ$-measurable edge chromatic number obeys the same bound. More generally, we show that $G$ has Borel edge chromatic number at most $Δ(G)$ plus its asymptotic separation index.
