Markov chains, CAT(0) cube complexes, and enumeration: monotone paths in a strip mix slowly
We prove that two natural Markov chains on the set of monotone paths in a strip mix slowly. To do so, we make novel use of the theory of non-positively curved (CAT(0)) cubical complexes to detect small bottlenecks in many graphs of combinatorial interest. Along the way, we give a formula for the number c_m(n) of monotone paths of length n in a strip of height m. In particular we compute the exponential growth constant of c_m(n) for arbitrary m, generalizing results of Williams for m=2, 3.

Limit Theorems for the Length of the Longest Common Subsequence of Mallows Permutations
The Mallows measure is measure on permutations which was introduced by Mallows in connection with ranking problems in statistics. Under this measure, the probability of a permutation $π$ is proportional to $q^{Inv(π)}$ where $q$ is a positive parameter and $Inv(π)$ is the number of inversions in $π$. We consider the length of the longest common subsequence (LCS) of two independently permutations drawn according to $μ_{n,q}$ and $μ_{n,q'}$ for some $q,q' >0$. We show that when $0<q,q'<1$, the limiting law of the LCS is Gaussian. In the regime that $n(1-q) \to \infty$ and $n(1-q') \to \infty$ we show a weak law of large numbers for the LCS. These results extend the results of \cite{Basu} and \cite{Naya} showing weak laws and a limiting law for the distribution of the longest increasing subsequence to showing corresponding results for the longest common subsequence.

The number of inversions of permutations with fixed shape

The Robinson-Schensted correspondence can be viewed as a map from permutations to partitions. In this work, we study the number of inversions of permutations corresponding to a fixed partition $λ$ under this map. Hohlweg characterized permutations having shape $λ$ with the minimum number of inversions. Here, we give the first results in this direction for higher numbers of inversions. We give explicit conjectures for both the structure and the number of permutations associated to $λ$ where the extra number of inversions is less than the length of the smallest column of $λ$. We prove the result when $λ$ has two columns.
