Left regular bands with symmetry
The representation theory of left regular band semigroup algebras is well-studied and known to have close connections with combinatorial topology, as established in the work of Margolis--Saliola--Steinberg ('15, '21). In this paper, we investigate the representation theory of the invariant subalgebras of left regular band semigroup algebras carrying the action of a finite group through the lens of group-equivariant combinatorial topology.
We characterize when the invariant subalgebra is semisimple or commutative and examine the equivariant structure of the Peirce components of the semigroup algebra. For CW left regular bands, we interpret these Peirce components in terms of the equivariant topology of intervals in the support semilattice, yielding the Cartan invariants of the invariant subalgebras of left regular bands associated to CAT(0)-cube complexes. We also give a topological formula for the Peirce components for left regular bands with hereditary algebras. Finally, in specializing to left regular bands associated to geometric lattices, we explore generalizations of the Desarménién--Wachs derangement representation and their connections to Markov chains.
The $q$-deformed random-to-random family in the Hecke algebra
We generalize Reiner--Saliola--Welker's well-known but mysterious family of *$k$-random-to-random shuffles* from Markov chains on symmetric groups to Markov chains on the Type-$A$ Iwahori--Hecke algebras. We prove that the family of operators pairwise commutes and has eigenvalues that are polynomials in $q$ with non-negative integer coefficients. Our work generalizes work of Reiner--Saliola--Welker and Lafrenière for the symmetric group, and simplifies all known proofs in this case.
Spectrum of random-to-random shuffling in the Hecke algebra
We generalize random-to-random shuffling from a Markov chain on the symmetric group to one on the Type A Iwahori Hecke algebra, and show that its eigenvalues are polynomials in q with non-negative integer coefficients. Setting q=1 recovers results of Dieker and Saliola, whose computation of the spectrum of random-to-random in the symmetric group resolved a nearly 20 year old conjecture by Uyemura-Reyes. Our methods simplify their proofs by drawing novel connections to the Jucys-Murphy elements of the Hecke algebra, Young seminormal forms, and the Okounkov-Vershik approach to representation theory.
Superspace coinvariants and hyperplane arrangements
Let $Ω$ be the {\em superspace ring} of polynomial-valued differential forms on affine $n$-space. The natural action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on $n$-space induces an action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on $Ω$. The {\em superspace coinvariant ring} is the quotient $SR$ of $Ω$ by the ideal generated by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term. We give the first explicit basis of $SR$, proving a conjecture of Sagan and Swanson. Our techniques use the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We relate $SR$ to instances of the Solomon-Terao algebras of Abe-Maeno-Murai-Numata and use exact sequences relating the derivation modules of certain `southwest closed' arrangements to obtain the desired basis of $SR$.
Invariant theory for the face algebra of the braid arrangement
The faces of the braid arrangement form a monoid. The associated monoid algebra -- the face algebra -- is well-studied, especially in relation to card shuffling and other Markov chains. In this paper, we explore the action of the symmetric group on the face algebra from the perspective of invariant theory. Bidigare proved the invariant subalgebra of the face algebra is (anti)isomorphic to Solomon's descent algebra. We answer the more general question: what is the structure of the face algebra as a simultaneous representation of the symmetric group and Solomon's descent algebra? Special cases of our main theorem recover the Cartan invariants of Solomon's descent algebra discovered by Garsia-Reutenauer and work of Uyemura-Reyes on certain shuffling representations. Our proof techniques involve the homology of intervals in the lattice of set partitions.

We examine from an invariant theory viewpoint the monoid algebras for two monoids having large symmetry groups. The first monoid is the free left-regular band on $n$ letters, defined on the set of all injective words, that is, the words with at most one occurrence of each letter. This monoid carries the action of the symmetric group. The second monoid is one of its $q$-analogues, considered by K. Brown, carrying an action of the finite general linear group. In both cases, we show that the invariant subalgebras are semisimple commutative algebras, and characterize them using Stirling and $q$-Stirling numbers.
We then use results from the theory of random walks and random-to-top shuffling to decompose the entire monoid algebra into irreducibles, simultaneously as a module over the invariant ring and as a group representation. Our irreducible decompositions are described in terms of derangement symmetric functions introduced by Désarménien and Wachs.
Recovering Conductances of Resistor Networks in a Punctured Disk
The response matrix of a resistor network is the linear map from the potential at the boundary vertices to the net current at the boundary vertices. For circular planar resistor networks, Curtis, Ingerman, and Morrow have given a necessary and sufficient condition for recovering the conductance of each edge in the network uniquely from the response matrix using local moves and medial graphs. We generalize their results for resistor networks on a punctured disk. First we discuss additional local moves that occur in our setting, prove several results about medial graphs of resistor networks on a punctured disk, and define the notion of $z$-sequences for such graphs. We then define certain circular planar graphs that are electrically equivalent to standard graphs and turn them into networks on a punctured disk by adding a boundary vertex in the middle. We prove such networks are recoverable and are able to generalize this result to a much broader family of networks. A necessary condition for recoverability is also introduced.
Deformations of the Weyl Character Formula for $SO(2n+1,\mathbb{C})$ via Ice Models
We explore combinatorial formulas for deformations of highest weight characters of the odd orthogonal group $SO(2n+1)$. Our goal is to represent these deformations of characters as partition functions of statistical mechanical models -- in particular, two-dimensional solvable lattice models. In Cartan type $A$, Hamel and King [8] and Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg [3] gave square ice models on a rectangular lattice which produced such a deformation. Outside of type $A$, ice-type models were found using rectangular lattices with additional boundary conditions that split into two classes -- those with `nested' and `non-nested bends.' Our results fill a gap in the literature, providing the first such formulas for type $B$ with non-nested bends. In type $B$, there are many known combinatorial parameterizations of highest weight representation basis vectors as catalogued by Proctor [19]. We show that some of these permit ice-type models via appropriate bijections (those of Sundaram [21] and Koike-Terada [15]) while other examples due to Proctor do not.
