On the maximal dimension of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group
We prove that the maximal dimension $d_N$ of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group $S_N$ satisfies $$d_N=\sqrt{N!} \, e^{-(\mathfrak{d}+o(1))\sqrt{N} }, \quad N\to \infty,$$ for some constant $\mathfrak{d}>0$. This answers a question raised by Vershik--Kerov in 1985.

Colored Interacting Particle Systems on the Ring: Stationary Measures from Yang-Baxter Equation
Recently, there has been much progress in understanding stationary measures for colored (also called multi-species or multi-type) interacting particle systems, motivated by asymptotic phenomena and rich underlying algebraic and combinatorial structures (such as nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials). In this paper, we present a unified approach to constructing stationary measures for most of the known colored particle systems on the ring and the line, including (1) the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (multispecies ASEP, or mASEP); (2) the q-deformed Totally Asymmetric Zero Range Process (TAZRP) also known as the q-Boson particle system; (3) the q-deformed Pushing Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (q-PushTASEP). Our method is based on integrable stochastic vertex models and the Yang-Baxter equation. We express the stationary measures as partition functions of new "queue vertex models" on the cylinder. The stationarity property is a direct consequence of the Yang-Baxter equation. For the mASEP on the ring, a particular case of our vertex model is equivalent to the multiline queues of Martin (arXiv:1810.10650). For the colored q-Boson process and the q-PushTASEP on the ring, we recover and generalize known stationary measures constructed using multiline queues or other methods by Ayyer-Mandelshtam-Martin (arXiv:2011.06117, arXiv:2209.09859), and Bukh-Cox (arXiv:1912.03510). Our proofs of stationarity use the Yang-Baxter equation and bypass the Matrix Product Ansatz used for the mASEP by Prolhac-Evans-Mallick (arXiv:0812.3293). On the line and in a quadrant, we use the Yang-Baxter equation to establish a general colored Burke's theorem, which implies that suitable specializations of our queue vertex models produce stationary measures for particle systems on the line. We also compute the colored particle currents in stationarity.

Coloured corner processes from asymptotics of LLT polynomials
We consider probability measures arising from the Cauchy summation identity for the LLT (Lascoux--Leclerc--Thibon) symmetric polynomials of rank $n \geq 1$. We study the asymptotic behaviour of these measures as one of the two sets of polynomials in the Cauchy identity stays fixed, while the other one grows to infinity. At $n=1$, this corresponds to an analogous limit of the Schur process, which is known to be given by the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) corners process. Our main result states that, for $n>1$, our measures asymptotically split into two parts: a continuous one and a discrete one. The continuous part is a product of $n$ GUE corners processes; the discrete part is an explicit finite distribution on interlacing $n$-colourings of $n$ interlacing triangles, which has weights that are rational functions in the LLT parameter $q$. The latter distribution has a number of interesting (partly conjectural) combinatorial properties, such as $q$-nonnegativity and enumerative phenomena underlying its support. Our main tools are two different representations of the LLT polynomials, one as partition functions of a fermionic lattice model of rank $n$, and the other as finite-dimensional contour integrals, which were recently obtained in arXiv:2012.02376, arXiv:2101.01605.
Free Fermion Six Vertex Model: Symmetric Functions and Random Domino Tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Our work deals with symmetric rational functions and probabilistic models based on the fully inhomogeneous six vertex (ice type) model satisfying the free fermion condition. Two families of symmetric rational functions $F_λ,G_λ$ are defined as certain partition functions of the six vertex model, with variables corresponding to row rapidities, and the labeling signatures $λ=(λ_1\ge \ldots\ge λ_N)\in \mathbb{Z}^N$ encoding boundary conditions. These symmetric functions generalize Schur symmetric polynomials, as well as some of their variations, such as factorial and supersymmetric Schur polynomials. Cauchy type summation identities for $F_λ,G_λ$ and their skew counterparts follow from the Yang-Baxter equation. Using algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain a double alternant type formula for $F_λ$ and a Sergeev-Pragacz type formula for $G_λ$. In the spirit of the theory of Schur processes, we define probability measures on sequences of signatures with probability weights proportional to products of our symmetric functions. We show that these measures can be viewed as determinantal point processes, and we express their correlation kernels in a double contour integral form. We present two proofs: The first is a direct computation of Eynard-Mehta type, and the second uses non-standard, inhomogeneous versions of fermionic operators in a Fock space coming from the algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the six vertex model. We also interpret our determinantal processes as random domino tilings of a half-strip with inhomogeneous domino weights. In the bulk, we show that the lattice asymptotic behavior of such domino tilings is described by a new determinantal point process on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, which can be viewed as an doubly-inhomogeneous generalization of the extended discrete sine process.

Edge Statistics for Lozenge Tilings of Polygons, II: Airy Line Ensemble
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Pi 13 (2025) e2 • View PublicationBIB
We consider uniformly random lozenge tilings of simply connected polygons subject to a technical assumption on their limit shape. We show that the edge statistics around any point on the arctic boundary, that is not a cusp or tangency location, converge to the Airy line ensemble. Our proof proceeds by locally comparing these edge statistics with those for a random tiling of a hexagon, which are well understood. To realize this comparison, we require a nearly optimal concentration estimate for the tiling height function, which we establish by exhibiting a certain Markov chain on the set of all tilings that preserves such concentration estimates under its dynamics.

Deformed Polynuclear Growth in $(1+1)$ Dimensions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study a one parameter deformation of the polynuclear growth (PNG) in $(1+1)$-dimensions, which we call the $t$-PNG model. It is defined by requiring that, when two expanding islands merge, with probability $t$ they sprout another island on top of the merging location. At $t=0$, this becomes the standard (non-deformed) PNG model that, in the droplet geometry, can be reformulated through longest increasing subsequences of uniformly random permutations or through an algorithm known as patience sorting. In terms of the latter, the $t$-PNG model allows errors to occur in the sorting algorithm with probability $t$. We prove that the $t$-PNG model exhibits one-point Tracy-Widom GUE asymptotics at large times for any fixed $t\in [0,1)$, and one-point convergence to the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation as $t$ tends to $1$. We further construct distributions for an external source that are likely to induce Baik-Ben Arous-Peche type phase transitions. The proofs are based on solvable stochastic vertex models and their connection to the determinantal point processes arising from Schur measures on partitions.

Gaussian Unitary Ensemble in random lozenge tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper establishes a universality result for scaling limits of uniformly random lozenge tilings of large domains. We prove that whenever a boundary of the domain has three adjacent straight segments inclined under 120 degrees to each other, the asymptotics of tilings near the middle segment is described by the GUE--corners process of random matrix theory. An important step in our argument is to show that fluctuations of the height function of random tilings on essentially arbitrary simply-connected domains of diameter $N$ have smaller magnitude than $N^{1/2}$.

Colored Fermionic Vertex Models and Symmetric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this text we introduce and analyze families of symmetric functions arising as partition functions for colored fermionic vertex models associated with the quantized affine Lie superalgebra $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$. We establish various combinatorial results for these vertex models and symmetric functions, which include the following. (1) We apply the fusion procedure to the fundamental $R$-matrix for $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$ to obtain an explicit family of vertex weights satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. (2) We define families of symmetric functions as partition functions for colored, fermionic vertex models under these fused weights. We further establish several combinatorial properties for these symmetric functions, such as branching rules and Cauchy identities. (3) We show that the Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon (LLT) polynomials arise as special cases of these symmetric functions. This enables us to show both old and new properties about the LLT polynomials, including Cauchy identities, contour integral formulas, stability properties, and branching rules under a certain family of plethystic transformations. (4) A different special case of our symmetric functions gives rise to a new family of polynomials called factorial LLT polynomials. We show they generalize the LLT polynomials, while also satisfying a vanishing condition reminiscent of that satisfied by the factorial Schur functions. (5) By considering our vertex model on a cylinder, we obtain fermionic partition function formulas for both the symmetric and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. (6) We prove combinatorial formulas for the coefficients of the LLT polynomials when expanded in the modified Hall-Littlewood basis, as partition functions for a $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (2 | n) \big)$ vertex model.

Large Genus Asymptotics for Intersection Numbers and Principal Strata Volumes of Quadratic Differentials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we analyze the large genus asymptotics for intersection numbers between $ψ$-classes, also called correlators, on the moduli space of stable curves. Our proofs proceed through a combinatorial analysis of the recursive relations (Virasoro constraints) that uniquely determine these correlators, together with a comparison between the coefficients in these relations with the jump probabilities of a certain asymmetric simple random walk. As an application of this result, we provide the large genus limits for Masur-Veech volumes and area Siegel-Veech constants associated with principal strata in the moduli space of quadratic differentials. These confirm predictions of Delecroix-Goujard-Zograf-Zorich from 2019.

Universality for Lozenge Tiling Local Statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider uniformly random lozenge tilings of arbitrary domains approximating (after suitable normalization) a closed, simply-connected subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with piecewise smooth, simple boundary. We show that the local statistics of this model around any point in the liquid region of its limit shape are given by the infinite-volume, translation-invariant, extremal Gibbs measure of the appropriate slope, thereby confirming a prediction of Cohn-Kenyon-Propp from 2001 in the case of lozenge tilings. Our proofs proceed by locally coupling a uniformly random lozenge tiling with a model of Bernoulli random walks conditioned to never intersect, whose convergence of local statistics has been recently understood by the work of Gorin-Petrov. Central to implementing this procedure is to establish a local law for the random tiling, which states that the associated height function is approximately linear on any mesoscopic scale.

Arctic Boundaries of the Ice Model on Three-Bundle Domains
In this paper we consider the six-vertex model at ice point on an arbitrary three-bundle domain, which is a generalization of the domain-wall ice model on the square (or, equivalently, of a uniformly random alternating sign matrix). We show that this model exhibits the arctic boundary phenomenon, whose boundary is given by a union of explicit algebraic curves. This was originally predicted by Colomo-Sportiello in 2016 as one of the initial applications of a general heuristic that they introduced for locating arctic boundaries, called the (geometric) tangent method. Our proof uses a probabilistic analysis of non-crossing directed path ensembles to provide a mathematical justification of their tangent method heuristic in this case, which might be of independent interest.

Large Genus Asymptotics for Siegel-Veech Constants
Published in Geom. Funct. Anal. 29, 1295-1324, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the large genus asymptotics for two classes of Siegel-Veech constants associated with an arbitrary connected stratum $\mathcal{H} (α)$ of Abelian differentials. The first is the saddle connection Siegel-Veech constant $c_{\text{sc}}^{m_i, m_j} \big( \mathcal{H} (α) \big)$ counting saddle connections between two distinct, fixed zeros of prescribed orders $m_i$ and $m_j$, and the second is the area Siegel-Veech constant $c_{\text{area}} \big( \mathcal{H}(α) \big)$ counting maximal cylinders weighted by area. By combining a combinatorial analysis of explicit formulas of Eskin-Masur-Zorich that express these constants in terms of Masur-Veech strata volumes, with a recent result for the large genus asymptotics of these volumes, we show that $c_{\text{sc}}^{m_i, m_j} \big( \mathcal{H} (α) \big) = (m_i + 1) (m_j + 1) \big( 1 + o(1) \big)$ and $c_{\text{area}} \big( \mathcal{H}(α) \big) = \frac{1}{2} + o(1)$, both as $|α| = 2g - 2$ tends to $\infty$. The former result confirms a prediction of Zorich and the latter confirms one of Eskin-Zorich in the case of connected strata.

Large Genus Asymptotics for Volumes of Strata of Abelian Differentials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the large genus asymptotics for Masur-Veech volumes of arbitrary strata of Abelian differentials. Through a combinatorial analysis of an algorithm proposed in 2002 by Eskin-Okounkov to exactly evaluate these quantities, we show that the volume $ν_1 \big( \mathcal{H}_1 (m) \big)$ of a stratum indexed by a partition $m = (m_1, m_2, \ldots , m_n)$ is $\big( 4 + o(1) \big) \prod_{i = 1}^n (m_i + 1)^{-1}$ as $2g - 2 = \sum_{i = 1}^n m_i$ tends to $\infty$. This confirms a prediction of Eskin-Zorich and generalizes some of the recent results of Chen-Moeller-Zagier and Sauvaget, who established these limiting statements in the special cases $m = 1^{2g - 2}$ and $m = (2g - 2)$, respectively. We also include an Appendix by Anton Zorich that uses our main result to deduce the large genus asymptotics for Siegel-Veech constants that count certain types of saddle connections.

When Does the Set of $(a, b, c)$-Core Partitions Have a Unique Maximal Element?
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2007, Olsson and Stanton gave an explicit form for the largest $(a, b)$-core partition, for any relatively prime positive integers $a$ and $b$, and asked whether there exists an $(a, b)$-core that contains all other $(a, b)$-cores as subpartitions; this question was answered in the affirmative first by Vandehey and later by Fayers independently. In this paper we investigate a generalization of this question, which was originally posed by Fayers: for what triples of positive integers $(a, b, c)$ does there exist an $(a, b, c)$-core that contains all other $(a, b, c)$-cores as subpartitions? We completely answer this question when $a$, $b$, and $c$ are pairwise relatively prime; we then use this to generalize the result of Olsson and Stanton.

Armstrong's Conjecture for $(k, mk + 1)$-Core Partitions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 47, 54-67 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
A conjecture of Armstrong states that if $\gcd (a, b) = 1$, then the average size of an $(a, b)$-core partition is $(a - 1)(b - 1)(a + b + 1) / 24$. Recently, Stanley and Zanello used a recursive argument to verify this conjecture when $a = b - 1$. In this paper we use a variant of their method to establish Armstrong's conjecture in the more general setting where $a$ divides $b - 1$.

Correlation Functions of the Schur Process Through Macdonald Difference Operators
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 131, 88-118 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
Introduced by Okounkov and Reshetikhin, the Schur process is known to be a determinantal point process, meaning that its correlation functions are minors of a single correlation kernel matrix. Previously, this was derived using determinantal expressions for the skew-Schur polynomials. In this paper we obtain this result in a different way, using the fact that the Schur polynomials are eigenfunctions of Macdonald difference operators.

On Isosceles Triangles and Related Problems in a Convex Polygon
Given any convex $n$-gon, in this article, we: (i) prove that its vertices can form at most $n^2/2 + Θ(n\log n)$ isosceles trianges with two sides of unit length and show that this bound is optimal in the first order, (ii) conjecture that its vertices can form at most $3n^2/4 + o(n^2)$ isosceles triangles and prove this conjecture for a special group of convex $n$-gons, (iii) prove that its vertices can form at most $\lfloor n/k \rfloor$ regular $k$-gons for any integer $k\ge 4$ and that this bound is optimal, and (iv) provide a short proof that the sum of all the distances between its vertices is at least $(n-1)/2$ and at most $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor \lceil n/2 \rceil(1/2)$ as long as the convex $n$-gon has unit perimeter.
