Height fluctuation for Lozenge Tilings of Polygons
We establish Gaussian free field fluctuations for uniformly random lozenge tilings of simply connected polygonal domains with $3d$ sides whose directions cycle through the three lattice directions. More precisely, assuming that the liquid region is connected and that the boundary data do not force the height at any interior point, we prove that the fluctuations of centered height function converge to the Gaussian free field in the liquid region, confirming a prediction of Kenyon and Okounkov from 2007. We introduce a tiling action function that encodes the geometry of the limit shape through its critical points. The action function has a complex conjugate pair of critical points in the liquid region, repeated real critical points on the arctic boundary, and distinct real critical points in the frozen region. Using this tiling action function, we construct an approximation to the inverse Kasteleyn matrix in terms of explicit single-contour and double-contour integrals and prove that the approximation is uniform throughout the polygonal domain. The convergence to the Gaussian free field then follows from standard kernel computations.

Lecture Notes on Edge Universality for Random Regular Graphs
The purpose of this note is to explain the structure, general strategy, and main ideas of the proof in the work of Huang, McKenzie, and Yau (2024) on the Ramanujan property and edge universality of random regular graphs. The core of the argument is the derivation of self-consistent equations and a microscopic version of the loop equations for random $d$-regular graphs. We first recall the local law for random $d$-regular graphs, and then illustrate the main ideas behind the derivation of the self-consistent equations and the first loop equation.

Gaussian Waves and Edge Eigenvectors of Random Regular Graphs
Backhausz and Szegedy (2019) demonstrated that the almost eigenvectors of random regular graphs converge to Gaussian waves with variance $0\leq σ^2\leq 1$. In this paper, we present an alternative proof of this result for the edge eigenvectors of random regular graphs, establishing that the variance must be $σ^2=1$. Furthermore, we show that the eigenvalues and eigenvectors are asymptotically independent. Our approach introduces a simple framework linking the weak convergence of the imaginary part of the Green's function to the convergence of eigenvectors, which may be of independent interest.

Ramanujan Property and Edge Universality of Random Regular Graphs
We consider the normalized adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular graph on $N$ vertices with any fixed degree $d\geq 3$ and denote its eigenvalues as $λ_1=d/\sqrt{d-1}\geq λ_2\geqλ_3\cdots\geq λ_N$. We establish the following two results as $N\rightarrow \infty$. (i) With high probability, all eigenvalues are optimally rigid, up to an additional $N^{{\rm o}(1)}$ factor. Specifically, the fluctuations of bulk eigenvalues are bounded by $N^{-1+{\rm o}(1)}$, and the fluctuations of edge eigenvalues are bounded by $N^{-2/3+{\rm o}(1)}$. (ii) Edge universality holds for random $d$-regular graphs. That is, the distributions of $λ_2$ and $-λ_N$ converge to the Tracy-Widom$_1$ distribution associated with the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. As a consequence, for sufficiently large $N$, approximately $69\%$ of $d$-regular graphs on $N$ vertices are Ramanujan, meaning $\max\{λ_2,|λ_N|\}\leq 2$.

Asymptotics of Symmetric Polynomials: A Dynamical Point of view
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the (skew) Macdonald and Jack symmetric polynomials as the number of variables grows to infinity. We characterize their limits in terms of certain variational problems. As an intermediate step, we establish a large deviation principle for the $θ$ analogue of non-intersecting Bernoulli random walks. When $θ=1$, these walks are equivalent to random Lozenges tilings of strip domains, where the variational principle (with general domains and boundary conditions) has been proven in the seminal work by Cohn, Kenyon, and Propp. Our result gives a new argument of this variational principle, and also extends it to non-intersecting $θ$-Bernoulli random walks for any $θ\in (0,\infty)$. Remarkably, the rate functions remain identical, differing only by a factor of $1/θ$.

Pearcey universality at cusps of polygonal lozenge tiling
Published in Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 77 (9), 3708-3784 (September 2024) • View PublicationBIB
We study uniformly random lozenge tilings of general simply connected polygons. Under a technical assumption that is presumably generic with respect to polygon shapes, we show that the local statistics around a cusp point of the arctic curve converge to the Pearcey process. This verifies the widely predicted universality of edge statistics in the cusp case. Together with the smooth and tangent cases proved in Aggarwal-Huang and Aggarwal-Gorin, these are believed to be the three types of edge statistics that can arise in a generic polygon. Our proof is via a local coupling of the random tiling with non-intersecting Bernoulli random walks (NBRW). To leverage this coupling, we establish an optimal concentration estimate for the tiling height function around the cusp. As another step and also a result of potential independent interest, we show that the local statistics of NBRW around a cusp converge to the Pearcey process when the initial configuration consists of two parts with proper density growth, via careful asymptotic analysis of the determinantal formula.

Edge Universality of Random Regular Graphs of Growing Degrees
We consider the statistics of extreme eigenvalues of random $d$-regular graphs, with $N^{\mathfrak c}\leq d\leq N^{1/3-{\mathfrak c}}$ for arbitrarily small ${\mathfrak c}>0$. We prove that in this regime, the fluctuations of extreme eigenvalues are given by the Tracy-Widom distribution. As a consequence, about 69% of $d$-regular graphs have all nontrivial eigenvalues bounded in absolute value by $2\sqrt{d-1}$.

Edge Universality of Sparse Random Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the statistics of the extreme eigenvalues of sparse random matrices, a class of random matrices that includes the normalized adjacency matrices of the Erd{\H o}s-R{é}nyi graph $G(N,p)$. Recently, it was shown by Lee, up to an explicit random shift, the optimal rigidity of extreme eigenvalues holds, provided the averaged degree grows with the size of the graph, $pN>N^\varepsilon$. We prove in the same regime, (i) Optimal rigidity holds for all eigenvalues with respect to an explicit random measure. (ii) Up to an explicit random shift, the fluctuations of the extreme eigenvalues are given the Tracy-Widom distribution.

Dynamical Loop Equation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce dynamical versions of loop (or Dyson-Schwinger) equations for large families of two--dimensional interacting particle systems, including Dyson Brownian motion, Nonintersecting Bernoulli/Poisson random walks, $β$--corners processes, uniform and Jack-deformed measures on Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, Macdonald processes, and $(q,κ)$-distributions on lozenge tilings. Under technical assumptions, we show that the dynamical loop equations lead to Gaussian field type fluctuations. As an application, we compute the limit shape for $(q,κ)$--distributions on lozenge tilings and prove that their height fluctuations converge to the Gaussian Free Field in an appropriate complex structure.

Edge Statistics for Lozenge Tilings of Polygons, II: Airy Line Ensemble
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Pi 13 (2025) e2 • View PublicationBIB
We consider uniformly random lozenge tilings of simply connected polygons subject to a technical assumption on their limit shape. We show that the edge statistics around any point on the arctic boundary, that is not a cusp or tangency location, converge to the Airy line ensemble. Our proof proceeds by locally comparing these edge statistics with those for a random tiling of a hexagon, which are well understood. To realize this comparison, we require a nearly optimal concentration estimate for the tiling height function, which we establish by exhibiting a certain Markov chain on the set of all tilings that preserves such concentration estimates under its dynamics.

Spectrum of Random $d$-regular Graphs Up to the Edge
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider the normalized adjacency matrices of random $d$-regular graphs on $N$ vertices with fixed degree $d\geq3$. We prove that, with probability $1-N^{-1+{\varepsilon}}$ for any ${\varepsilon} >0$, the following two properties hold as $N \to \infty$ provided that $d\geq3$: (i) The eigenvalues are close to the classical eigenvalue locations given by the Kesten-McKay distribution. In particular, the extremal eigenvalues are concentrated with polynomial error bound in $N$, i.e. $λ_2, |λ_N|\leq 2+N^{-c}$. (ii) All eigenvectors of random $d$-regular graphs are completely delocalized.

Height Fluctuations of Random Lozenge Tilings Through Nonintersecting Random Walks
In this paper we study height fluctuations of random lozenge tilings of polygonal domains on the triangular lattice through nonintersecting Bernoulli random walks. For a large class of polygons which have exactly one horizontal upper boundary edge, we show that these random height functions converge to a Gaussian Free Field as predicted by Kenyon and Okounkov [28]. A key ingredient of our proof is a dynamical version of the discrete loop equations as introduced by Borodin, Guionnet and Gorin [5], which might be of independent interest.

Large Deviation Principles via Spherical Integrals

In this article, we develop a framework to study the large deviation principle for matrix models and their quantized versions, by tilting the measures using the limits of spherical integrals obtained in [46,47]. As examples, we obtain 1. a large deviation principle for the empirical distribution of the diagonal entries of $UB_NU^*$, for a sequence of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $B_N$ and unitary Haar distributed matrices $U$; 2. a large deviation upper bound for the empirical eigenvalue distribution of $A_N+UB_NU^*$, for two sequences of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $A_N, B_N$, and their complementary lower bounds at measures which are described by the free product with amalgamation; 3. a large deviation principle for the Kostka number $K_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbolη_N}$, for two sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbolη_N$ with at most $N$ rows; 4. a large deviation upper bound for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbol η_N}^{\boldsymbol κ_N}$, for three sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbol η_N, \boldsymbol κ_N$ with at most $N$ rows, and their complementary lower bounds at nice measures.

Invertibility of adjacency matrices for random $d$-regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $d\geq 3$ be a fixed integer and $A$ be the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular directed or undirected graph on $n$ vertices. We show there exist constants $\mathfrak d>0$, \begin{align*} {\mathbb P}(\text{$A$ is singular in $\mathbb R$})\leq n^{-\mathfrak{d}}, \end{align*} for $n$ sufficiently large. This answers an open problem by Frieze [12] and Vu [28,19]. The key idea is to study the singularity probability of adjacency matrices over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_p$. The proof combines a local central limit theorem and a large deviation estimate.

Let $d\geq 3$ be a fixed integer, and a prime number $p$ such that $\gcd(p,d)=1$. Let $A$ be the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices. We show that as a random matrix in ${\mathbb F}_p$, \begin{equation} {\mathbb P}(\text{$A$ is singular in ${\mathbb F}_p$})\leq \frac{1+{\mathrm{o}}(1)}{p-1}, \end{equation} as $n$ goes to infinity. As a consequence, as a random matrix in $\mathbb R$, \begin{equation} {\mathbb P}(\text{$A$ is singular in $\mathbb R$})={\mathrm{o}}(1) \end{equation} as $n$ goes to infinity. This answers an open problem by Frieze [12] and Vu [29,30], for random $d$-regular bipartite graphs. The proof combines a local central limit theorem and a large deviation estimate.
Local Kesten--McKay law for random regular graphs
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 369 (2):523-636, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
We study the adjacency matrices of random $d$-regular graphs with large but fixed degree $d$. In the bulk of the spectrum $[-2\sqrt{d-1}+\varepsilon, 2\sqrt{d-1}-\varepsilon]$ down to the optimal spectral scale, we prove that the Green's functions can be approximated by those of certain infinite tree-like (few cycles) graphs that depend only on the local structure of the original graphs. This result implies that the Kesten--McKay law holds for the spectral density down to the smallest scale and the complete delocalization of bulk eigenvectors. Our method is based on estimating the Green's function of the adjacency matrices and a resampling of the boundary edges of large balls in the graphs.
Bulk eigenvalue statistics for random regular graphs

We consider the uniform random $d$-regular graph on $N$ vertices, with $d \in [N^α, N^{2/3-α}]$ for arbitrary $α> 0$. We prove that in the bulk of the spectrum the local eigenvalue correlation functions and the distribution of the gaps between consecutive eigenvalues coincide with those of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble.
Partition Statistics Equidistributed with the Number of Hook Difference One Cells
Let $λ$ be a partition, viewed as a Young diagram. We define the hook difference of a cell of $λ$ to be the difference of its leg and arm lengths. Define $h_{1,1}(λ)$ to be the number of cells of $λ$ with hook difference one. In the paper of Buryak and Feigin (arXiv:1206.5640), algebraic geometry is used to prove a generating function identity which implies that $h_{1,1}$ is equidistributed with $a_2$, the largest part of a partition that appears at least twice, over the partitions of a given size. In this paper, we propose a refinement of the theorem of Buryak and Feigin and prove some partial results using combinatorial methods. We also obtain a new formula for the q-Catalan numbers which naturally leads us to define a new q,t-Catalan number with a simple combinatorial interpretation.

Laurent Phenomenon Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we undertake a systematic study of recurrences x_{m+n}x_{m} = P(x_{m+1}, ..., x_{m+n-1}) which exhibit the Laurent phenomenon. Some of the most famous among these sequences come from the Somos and the Gale-Robinson recurrences. Our approach is based on finding period 1 seeds of Laurent phenomenon algebras of Lam-Pylyavskyy. We completely classify polynomials P that generate period 1 seeds in the cases of n=2,3 and of mutual binomial seeds. We also find several other interesting families of polynomials P whose generated sequences exhibit the Laurent phenomenon. Our classification for binomial seeds is a direct generalization of a result by Fordy and Marsh, that employs a new combinatorial gadget we call a double quiver.
