The Rectangular Finite Free Heat Flow
We define and study the rectangular finite free heat flow, a dynamical system on polynomials that plays the role of the heat equation in the setting of rectangular finite free probability. We show several equivalent characterizations of the evolution (including PDE and gradient flow formulations), establish basic properties of the dynamics, and determine the asymptotic distributions of the polynomial roots in the long-time and high-degree limits. We also discuss connections with Calogero-Moser systems and Dunkl processes, and we show that the rectangular finite free heat flow describes the mean curvature expansion of a family of compact Lie group orbits.

Hall-Littlewood-positive harmonic functionals on the algebra of symmetric functions
We study the problem of describing the set of real functionals on the quotient $\textrm{Sym}/(p_2-1)$ of the ring of symmetric functions that are nonnegative on the images of certain modified Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. This question is equivalent to the problem, posed in [Adv Math 395, p.108087 (2022)], of describing the set of coadjoint-invariant measures for unitary groups over a finite field in the infinite-dimensional setting. Our main results constitute partial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we show that the desired set of functionals is very large, in the sense that it contains explicit families of examples depending on infinitely many parameters. Secondly, we provide an analogue of Kerov's mixing construction that produces new sought after functionals from known old ones. This construction depends on an explicit "$p_2$-twisted action" of $\textrm{Sym}$ on itself and the resulting dual map that makes $\textrm{Sym}$ into a comodule. Finally, our third main result explains the relation between the $p_2$-twisted comultiplication and the usual comultiplication on $\textrm{Sym}$.

Law of Large Numbers for continuous $N$-particle ensembles at fixed temperature
In this paper, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the Law of Large Numbers of averaged empirical measures of $N$-particle ensembles, in terms of the asymptotics of their Bessel generating functions, in the fixed temperature regime. This settles an open problem posed by Benaych-Georges, Cuenca and Gorin. For one direction, we use the moment method through Dunkl operators, and for the other we employ a special case of the formula of Chapuy--Dolega for the generating function of infinite constellations. As applications, we prove that the LLN for $θ$-sums and $θ$-corners of random matrices are given by the free convolution and free projection, respectively, regardless of the value of inverse temperature parameter $θ$. We also prove the LLN for a time-slice of the $θ$-Dyson Brownian motion.

Crystallization of discrete $N$-particle systems at high temperature
This is the second paper in a series studying the global asymptotics of discrete $N$-particle systems with inverse temperature parameter $θ$ in the high temperature regime. In the first paper, we established necessary and sufficient conditions for the Law of Large Numbers at high temperature in terms of Jack generating functions. In this paper, we derive a functional equation for the moment generating function of the limiting measure, which enables its analysis using analytic tools. We apply this functional equation to compute the densities of the high temperature limits of the pure Jack measures. As a special case, we obtain the high temperature limit of the large fixed-time distribution of the discrete-space $β$-Dyson Brownian motion of Gorin-Shkolnikov. Two special cases of our densities are the high temperature limits of discrete versions of the G$β$E, computed by Allez-Bouchaud-Guionnet in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109 (2012), 094102; arXiv:1205.3598], and L$β$E, computed by Allez-Bouchaud-Majumdar-Vivo in [J. Phys. A, vol. 46, no. 1 (2013), 015001; arXiv:1209.6171]. Moreover, we prove the following crystallization phenomenon of the particles in the high temperature limit: the limiting measures are uniformly supported on disjoint intervals with unit gaps and their locations correspond to the zeros of explicit special functions with all roots located in the real line. We also show that these zeros correspond to the spectra of certain unbounded Jacobi operators.

Discrete $N$-particle systems at high temperature through Jack generating functions
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the Law of Large Numbers for random discrete $N$-particle systems with the deformation (inverse temperature) parameter $θ$, as their size $N$ tends to infinity simultaneously with the inverse temperature going to zero. Our conditions are expressed in terms of the Jack generating functions, and our analysis is based on the asymptotics of the action of Cherednik operators obtained via Hecke relations. We apply the general framework to obtain the LLN for a large class of Markov chains of $N$ nonintersecting particles with interaction of log-gas type, and the LLN for the multiplication of Jack polynomials, as the inverse temperature tends to zero. We express the answer in terms of novel one-parameter deformations of cumulants and their description provided by us recovers previous work by Bufetov--Gorin on quantized free cumulants when $θ=1$, and by Benaych-Georges--Cuenca--Gorin after a deformation to continuous space of random matrix eigenvalues. Our methods are robust enough to be applied to the fixed temperature regime, where we recover the LLN of Huang.

Cumulants in rectangular finite free probability and beta-deformed singular values
Motivated by the $(q,γ)$-cumulants, introduced by Xu [arXiv:2303.13812] to study $β$-deformed singular values of random matrices, we define the $(n,d)$-rectangular cumulants for polynomials of degree $d$ and prove several moment-cumulant formulas by elementary algebraic manipulations; the proof naturally leads to quantum analogues of the formulas. We further show that the $(n,d)$-rectangular cumulants linearize the $(n,d)$-rectangular convolution from Finite Free Probability and that they converge to the $q$-rectangular free cumulants from Free Probability in the regime where $d\to\infty$, $1+n/d\to q\in[1,\infty)$. As an application, we employ our formulas to study limits of symmetric empirical root distributions of sequences of polynomials with nonnegative roots. One of our results is akin to a theorem of Kabluchko [arXiv:2203.05533] and shows that applying the operator $\exp(-\frac{s^2}{n}x^{-n}D_xx^{n+1}D_x)$, where $s>0$, asymptotically amounts to taking the rectangular free convolution with the rectangular Gaussian distribution of variance $qs^2/(q-1)$.

The Symplectic Schur Process
We define a measure on tuples of partitions, called the symplectic Schur process, that should be regarded as the right analogue of the Schur process of Okounkov-Reshetikhin for the Cartan type C. The weights of our measure include factors that are universal symplectic characters, as well as a novel family of "Down-Up Schur functions" that we define and for which we prove new identities of Cauchy-Littlewood-type. Our main structural result is that the point process corresponding to the symplectic Schur process is determinantal and we find an explicit correlation kernel. We also present dynamics that preserve the family of symplectic Schur processes and explore an alternative sampling scheme, based on the Berele insertion algorithm, in a special case. Finally, we study the asymptotics of the Berele insertion process and find explicit formulas for the limit shape and fluctuations near the bulk and the edge. One of the limit regimes leads to a new kernel that resembles the symmetric Pearcey kernel.

Universality of global asymptotics of Jack-deformed random Young diagrams at varying temperatures
Published in Ann. Probab. 54(1): 421-488, 2026 • View PublicationBIB
This paper establishes universal formulas describing the global asymptotics of two distinct discrete versions of $β$-ensembles in the high, low and fixed temperature regimes. Our results affirmatively answer a question posed by the second author and Śniady. We first introduce a special class of Jack measures on Young diagrams of arbitrary size, called the ``Jack--Thoma measures'', and prove the LLN and CLT in the three aforementioned limit regimes. In each case, we provide explicit formulas for polynomial observables of the limit shape and Gaussian fluctuations around the limit shape. These formulas have surprising positivity properties and are expressed as sums of weighted lattice paths. Second, we show that the previous formulas are universal: they also describe the limit shape and Gaussian fluctuations for the model of random Young diagrams of a fixed size derived from Jack characters with the approximate factorization property. Finally, in stark contrast with continuous $β$-ensembles, we show that the limit shapes at high and low temperatures of our random Young diagrams are one-sided infinite staircase shapes. For the Jack--Plancherel measure, we describe this shape explicitly by relating its local minima with the zeroes of Bessel functions.

Mackey-type identity for invariant functions on Lie algebras of finite unitary groups and an application
Published in Journal of Lie Theory 33 (2023), no.1, 149-168 • Search Publication
The Mackey-type identity mentioned in the title relates the operations of parabolic induction and restriction for invariant functions on the Lie algebras of the finite unitary groups $U(N, q^2)$. This result is applied to constructing positive harmonic functions on a new branching graph with a negative Hall-Littlewood parameter, as introduced in the authors' paper [Adv. Math. vol. 395 (2022), 108087; arXiv:2102.01947].This in turn implies the existence of an infinite-parameter family of invariant measures for the coadjoint action of an infinite-dimensional analogue of the groups $U(N, q^2)$.

Matrix addition and the Dunkl transform at high temperature
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a framework for establishing the Law of Large Numbers for the eigenvalues in the random matrix ensembles as the size of the matrix goes to infinity simultaneously with the beta (inverse temperature) parameter going to zero. Our approach is based on the analysis of the (symmetric) Dunkl transform in this regime. As an application we obtain the LLN for the sums of random matrices as the inverse temperature goes to 0. This results in a one-parameter family of binary operations which interpolates between classical and free convolutions of the probability measures. We also introduce and study a family of deformed cumulants, which linearize this operation.

Infinite-dimensional groups over finite fields and Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions
Published in Advances in Mathematics 395 (2022), paper 108087 • View PublicationBIB
The groups mentioned in the title are certain matrix groups of infinite size over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$. They are built from finite classical groups and at the same time they are similar to reductive $p$-adic Lie groups. In the present paper, we initiate the study of invariant measures for the coadjoint action of these infinite-dimensional groups. We examine first the group $\mathbb{GLB}$, a topological completion of the inductive limit group $\varinjlim GL(n, \mathbb F_q)$. As was shown by Gorin, Kerov, and Vershik [arXiv:1209.4945], the traceable factor representations of $\mathbb{GLB}$ admit a complete classification, achieved in terms of harmonic functions on the Young graph $\mathbb Y$. We show that there exists a parallel theory for ergodic coadjoint-invariant measures, which is linked with a deformed version of harmonic functions on $\mathbb Y$. Here the deformation means that the edges of $\mathbb Y$ are endowed with certain formal multiplicities coming from the simplest version of Pieri rule (multiplication by the first power sum $p_1$) for the Hall-Littlewood (HL) symmetric functions with parameter $t:=q^{-1}$. This fact serves as a prelude to our main results, which concern topological completions of two inductive limit groups built from finite unitary groups. We show that in this case, coadjoint-invariant measures are linked to some new branching graphs. The latter are still related to the HL functions, but the novelty is that now the formal edge multiplicities come from the multiplication by $p_2$ (not $p_1$) and the HL parameter $t$ turns out to be negative (as in Ennola's duality).

q-deformed Character Theory for Infinite-Dimensional Symplectic and Orthogonal Groups
The classification of irreducible, spherical characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary/orthogonal/symplectic groups can be obtained by finding all possible limits of normalized, irreducible characters of the corresponding finite-dimensional groups, as the rank tends to infinity. We solve a q-deformed version of the latter problem for orthogonal and symplectic groups, extending previously known results for the unitary group. The proof is based on novel determinantal and double-contour integral formulas for the q-specialized characters.

Elements of the q-Askey scheme in the algebra of symmetric functions
Published in Moscow Mathematical Journal 20 (2020), no. 4, 645-694 • View PublicationBIB
The classical q-hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials are assembled into a hierarchy called the q-Askey scheme. At the top of the hierarchy, there are two closely related families, the Askey-Wilson and q-Racah polynomials. As it is well known, their construction admits a generalization leading to remarkable orthogonal symmetric polynomials in several variables. We construct an analogue of the multivariable q-Racah polynomials in the algebra of symmetric functions. Next, we show that our q-Racah symmetric functions can be degenerated into the big q-Jacobi symmetric functions, introduced in a recent paper by the second author. The latter symmetric functions admit further degenerations leading to new symmetric functions, which are analogues of q-Meixner and Al-Salam--Carlitz polynomials. Each of the four families of symmetric functions (q-Racah, big q-Jacobi, q-Meixner, and Al-Salam--Carlitz) forms an orthogonal system of functions with respect to certain measure living on a space of infinite point configurations. The orthogonality measures of the four families are of independent interest. We show that they are linked by limit transitions which are consistent with the degenerations of the corresponding symmetric functions.

Interpolation Macdonald operators at infinity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the interpolation Macdonald functions, remarkable inhomogeneous generalizations of Macdonald functions, and a sequence $A^1, A^2, \ldots$ of commuting operators that are diagonalized by them. Such a sequence of operators arises in the projective limit of finite families of commuting q-difference operators studied by Okounkov, Knop and Sahi. The main theorem is an explicit formula for the operators $A^k$. Our formula involves the family of Hall-Littlewood functions and a new family of inhomogeneous Hall-Littlewood functions, for which we give an explicit construction and identify as a degeneration of the interpolation Macdonald functions in the regime $q \rightarrow 0$. This article is inspired by the recent papers of Nazarov-Sklyanin on Macdonald and Sekiguchi-Debiard operators, and our main theorem is an extension of their results.

Asymptotic Formulas for Macdonald Polynomials and the Boundary of the $(q,t)$-Gelfand-Tsetlin Graph
Published in SIGMA 14 (2018), 001, 66 pages • View PublicationBIB
We introduce Macdonald characters and use algebraic properties of Macdonald polynomials to study them. As a result, we produce several formulas for Macdonald characters, which are generalizations of those obtained by Gorin and Panova in [Ann. Probab. 43 (2015), 3052-3132, arXiv:1301.0634], and are expected to provide tools for the study of statistical mechanical models, representation theory and random matrices. As first application of our formulas, we characterize the boundary of the $(q,t)$-deformation of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph when $t=q^θ$ and $θ$ is a positive integer.

Pieri Integral Formula and Asymptotics of Jack Unitary Characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce Jack (unitary) characters and prove two kinds of formulas that are suitable for their asymptotics, as the lengths of the signatures that parametrize them go to infinity. The first kind includes several integral representations for Jack characters of one variable. The second identity we prove is the Pieri integral formula for Jack characters which, in a sense, is dual to the well known Pieri rule for Jack polynomials. The Pieri integral formula can also be seen as a functional equation for irreducible spherical functions of virtual Gelfand pairs. As an application of our formulas, we study the asymptotics of Jack characters as the corresponding signatures grow to infinity in the sense of Vershik-Kerov. We prove the existence of a small $δ> 0$ such that the Jack characters of $m$ variables have a uniform limit on the $δ$-neighborhood of the $m$-dimensional torus. Our result specializes to a theorem of Okounkov and Olshanski.

Laurent Phenomenon Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we undertake a systematic study of recurrences x_{m+n}x_{m} = P(x_{m+1}, ..., x_{m+n-1}) which exhibit the Laurent phenomenon. Some of the most famous among these sequences come from the Somos and the Gale-Robinson recurrences. Our approach is based on finding period 1 seeds of Laurent phenomenon algebras of Lam-Pylyavskyy. We completely classify polynomials P that generate period 1 seeds in the cases of n=2,3 and of mutual binomial seeds. We also find several other interesting families of polynomials P whose generated sequences exhibit the Laurent phenomenon. Our classification for binomial seeds is a direct generalization of a result by Fordy and Marsh, that employs a new combinatorial gadget we call a double quiver.
