Crystallization of discrete $N$-particle systems at high temperature
This is the second paper in a series studying the global asymptotics of discrete $N$-particle systems with inverse temperature parameter $θ$ in the high temperature regime. In the first paper, we established necessary and sufficient conditions for the Law of Large Numbers at high temperature in terms of Jack generating functions. In this paper, we derive a functional equation for the moment generating function of the limiting measure, which enables its analysis using analytic tools. We apply this functional equation to compute the densities of the high temperature limits of the pure Jack measures. As a special case, we obtain the high temperature limit of the large fixed-time distribution of the discrete-space $β$-Dyson Brownian motion of Gorin-Shkolnikov. Two special cases of our densities are the high temperature limits of discrete versions of the G$β$E, computed by Allez-Bouchaud-Guionnet in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109 (2012), 094102; arXiv:1205.3598], and L$β$E, computed by Allez-Bouchaud-Majumdar-Vivo in [J. Phys. A, vol. 46, no. 1 (2013), 015001; arXiv:1209.6171]. Moreover, we prove the following crystallization phenomenon of the particles in the high temperature limit: the limiting measures are uniformly supported on disjoint intervals with unit gaps and their locations correspond to the zeros of explicit special functions with all roots located in the real line. We also show that these zeros correspond to the spectra of certain unbounded Jacobi operators.
Path operators and $(q,t)$-tau functions
We construct a new class of operators that act on symmetric functions with two deformation parameters $q$ and $t$. Our combinatorial construction associates each operator with a specific lattice path, whose steps alternate between moving up and down. We demonstrate that positive linear combinations of these operators are the images of Negut elements via a representation of the shuffle algebra acting on the space of symmetric functions. Additionally, we provide a monomial, elementary, and Schur symmetric function expansion for the symmetric function obtained through repeated applications of the path operators on $1$. We apply path operators to investigate a $(q,t)$-deformation of the classical hypergeometric tau functions, which generalizes several important series already present in enumerative geometry, gauge theory, and integrability. We prove that this function is uniquely characterized by a family of partial differential equations derived from a positive linear combination of path operators. We also use our operators to offer a new, independent proof of the key result in establishing the extended delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson.

Discrete $N$-particle systems at high temperature through Jack generating functions
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the Law of Large Numbers for random discrete $N$-particle systems with the deformation (inverse temperature) parameter $θ$, as their size $N$ tends to infinity simultaneously with the inverse temperature going to zero. Our conditions are expressed in terms of the Jack generating functions, and our analysis is based on the asymptotics of the action of Cherednik operators obtained via Hecke relations. We apply the general framework to obtain the LLN for a large class of Markov chains of $N$ nonintersecting particles with interaction of log-gas type, and the LLN for the multiplication of Jack polynomials, as the inverse temperature tends to zero. We express the answer in terms of novel one-parameter deformations of cumulants and their description provided by us recovers previous work by Bufetov--Gorin on quantized free cumulants when $θ=1$, and by Benaych-Georges--Cuenca--Gorin after a deformation to continuous space of random matrix eigenvalues. Our methods are robust enough to be applied to the fixed temperature regime, where we recover the LLN of Huang.
$\mathfrak{b}$-Hurwitz numbers from refined topological recursion
We prove that single $G$-weighted $\mathfrak{b}$-Hurwitz numbers with internal faces are computed by refined topological recursion on a rational spectral curve, for certain rational weights $G$. Consequently, the $\mathfrak{b}$-Hurwitz generating function analytically continues to a rational curve. In particular, our results cover the cases of $\mathfrak{b}$-monotone Hurwitz numbers, and the enumeration of maps and bipartite maps (with internal faces) on non-oriented surfaces. As an application, we prove that the correlators of the Gaussian, Jacobi and Laguerre $β$-ensembles are computed by refined topological recursion.

$b$-Hurwitz numbers from Whittaker vectors for $\mathcal{W}$-algebras
We show that $b$-Hurwitz numbers with a rational weight are obtained by taking an explicit limit of a Whittaker vector for the $\mathcal{W}$-algebra of type $A$. Our result is a vast generalization of several previous results that treated the monotone case, and the cases of quadratic and cubic polynomial weights. It also provides an interpretation of the associated Whittaker vector in terms of generalized branched coverings that might be of independent interest. Our result is new even in the special case $b=0$ that corresponds to classical hypergeometric Hurwitz numbers, and implies that they are governed by the topological recursion of Eynard-Orantin. This gives an independent proof of the recent result of Bychkov-Dunin-Barkowski-Kazarian-Shadrin.

Positive formula for Jack polynomials, Jack characters and proof of Lassalle's conjecture
We give an explicit formula for the power-sum expansion of Jack polynomials. We deduce it from a more general formula, which we provide here, that interprets Jack characters in terms of bipartite maps. We prove Lassalle's conjecture from 2008 on integrality and positivity of Jack characters in Stanley's coordinates and give a new formula for Jack polynomials using creation operators.

Universality of global asymptotics of Jack-deformed random Young diagrams at varying temperatures
Published in Ann. Probab. 54(1): 421-488, 2026 • View PublicationBIB
This paper establishes universal formulas describing the global asymptotics of two distinct discrete versions of $β$-ensembles in the high, low and fixed temperature regimes. Our results affirmatively answer a question posed by the second author and Śniady. We first introduce a special class of Jack measures on Young diagrams of arbitrary size, called the ``Jack--Thoma measures'', and prove the LLN and CLT in the three aforementioned limit regimes. In each case, we provide explicit formulas for polynomial observables of the limit shape and Gaussian fluctuations around the limit shape. These formulas have surprising positivity properties and are expressed as sums of weighted lattice paths. Second, we show that the previous formulas are universal: they also describe the limit shape and Gaussian fluctuations for the model of random Young diagrams of a fixed size derived from Jack characters with the approximate factorization property. Finally, in stark contrast with continuous $β$-ensembles, we show that the limit shapes at high and low temperatures of our random Young diagrams are one-sided infinite staircase shapes. For the Jack--Plancherel measure, we describe this shape explicitly by relating its local minima with the zeroes of Bessel functions.

LLT cumulants and graph coloring
Published in Electron. J. Combin., 29(4), Paper 4.5, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to introduce a new family of quasi-symmetric functions called LLT cumulants and discuss its properties. We define LLT cumulants using the algebraic framework for conditional cumulants and we prove that the Macdonald cumulant has an explicit positive expansion in terms of LLT cumulants of ribbon shapes, generalizing the classical decomposition of Macdonald polynomials. We also find a natural combinatorial interpretation of the LLT cumulant of a given directed graph as a weighted generating function of colorings of its subgraphs. We use this graph theoretical framework to prove various positivity results. This includes monomial positivity, positivity in fundamental quasisymmetric functions and related positivity of the coefficients of Schur polynomials indexed by hook shapes. We also prove $e$-positivity for vertical-shape LLT cumulants, after the shift of variable $q \to q+1$, which refines a recent result of Alexandersson and Sulzgruber. All these results give evidence towards Schur-positivity of LLT cumulants, which we conjecture here. We prove that this conjecture implies Schur-positivity of Macdonald cumulants, and we give more evidence by proving the conjecture for LLT cumulants of melting lollipops that refines a recent result of Huh, Nam and Yoo.
Enumeration of non-oriented maps via integrability
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 5 (2022) no. 6, pp. 1363-1390 • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we examine how the BKP structure of the generating series of several models of maps on non-oriented surfaces can be used to obtain explicit and/or efficient recurrence formulas for their enumeration according to the genus and size parameters. Using techniques already known in the orientable case (elimination of variables via Virasoro constraints or Tutte equations), we naturally obtain recurrence formulas with non-polynomial coefficients. This non-polynomiality reflects the presence of shifts of the charge parameter in the BKP equation. Nevertheless, we show that it is possible to obtain non-shifted versions, meaning pure ODEs for the associated generating functions, from which recurrence relations with polynomial coefficients can be extracted. We treat the cases of triangulations, general maps, and bipartite maps. These recurrences with polynomial coefficients are conceptually interesting but bigger to write than those with non-polynomial coefficients. However they are relatively nice-looking in the case of one-face maps. In particular we show that Ledoux's recurrence for non-oriented one-face maps can be recovered in this way, and we obtain the analogous statement for the (bivariate) bipartite case.

$b$-monotone Hurwitz numbers: Virasoro constraints, BKP hierarchy, and $O(N)$-BGW integral
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2023, Issue 14, July 2023, Pages 12172-12230 • View PublicationBIB
We study a $b$-deformation of monotone Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We give an evolution equation for this model and derive from it Virasoro constraints, thereby proving a conjecture of Féray on Jack characters. A combinatorial model of non-oriented monotone Hurwitz maps which generalizes monotone transposition factorizations is provided. In the case $b=1$ we obtain an explicit Schur expansion of the model and show that it obeys the BKP integrable hierarchy. This Schur expansion also proves a conjecture of Oliveira--Novaes relating zonal polynomials with irreducible representations of $O(N)$. We also relate the model to an $O(N)$ version of the Brézin--Gross--Witten integral, which we solve explicitly in terms of Pfaffians in the case of even multiplicities.
Reflection length with two parameters in the asymptotic representation theory of type B/C and applications
We introduce a two-parameter function $φ_{q_+,q_-}$ on the infinite hyperoctahedral group, which is a bivariate refinement of the reflection length keeping track of the long and the short reflections separately. We show that this signed reflection function $φ_{q_+,q_-}$ is positive definite if and only if it is an extreme character of the infinite hyperoctahedral group and we classify the corresponding set of parameters $q_+,q_-$. We construct the corresponding representations through a natural action of the hyperoctahedral group $B(n)$ on the tensor product of $n$ copies of a vector space, which gives a two-parameter analog of the classical construction of Schur--Weyl. We apply our classification to construct a cyclic Fock space of type B generalizing the one-parameter construction in type A found previously by Bożejko and Guta. We also construct a new Gaussian operator acting on the cyclic Fock space of type B and we relate its moments with the Askey--Wimp--Kerov distribution by using the notion of cycles on pair-partitions, which we introduce here. Finally, we explain how to solve the analogous problem for the Coxeter groups of type D by using our main result.

Non-orientable branched coverings, $b$-Hurwitz numbers, and positivity for multiparametric Jack expansions
Published in Adv. Math. 409, 108645, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a one-parameter deformation of the 2-Toda tau-function of (weighted) Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We show that its coefficients are polynomials in the deformation parameter $b$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients count generalized branched coverings of the sphere by an arbitrary surface, orientable or not, with an appropriate $b$-weighting that "measures" in some sense their non-orientability. Notable special cases include non-orientable dessins d'enfants for which we prove the most general result so far towards the Matching-Jack conjecture and the "$b$-conjecture" of Goulden and Jackson from 1996, expansions of the $β$-ensemble matrix model, deformations of the HCIZ integral, and $b$-Hurwitz numbers that we introduce here and that are $b$-deformations of classical (single or double) Hurwitz numbers obtained for $b=0$. A key role in our proof is played by a combinatorial model of non-orientable constellations equipped with a suitable $b$-weighting, whose partition function satisfies an infinite set of PDEs. These PDEs have two definitions, one given by Lax equations, the other one following an explicit combinatorial decomposition.

Blossoming bijection for bipartite pointed maps and parametric rationality of general maps of any surface
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 141, 102408, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We construct an explicit bijection between bipartite pointed maps of an arbitrary surface $\mathbb{S}$, and specific unicellular blossoming maps of the same surface. Our bijection gives access to the degrees of all the faces, and distances from the pointed vertex in the initial map. The main construction generalizes recent work of the second author which covered the case of an orientable surface. Our bijection gives rise to a first combinatorial proof of a parametric rationality result concerning the bivariate generating series of maps of a given surface with respect to their numbers of faces and vertices. In particular, it provides a combinatorial explanation of the structural difference between the aforementioned bivariate parametric generating series in the case of orientable and non-orientable maps.

A positive combinatorial formula for symplectic Kostka-Foulkes polynomials I: Rows
Published in J. Algebra, 560, 1253-1296, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture of Lecouvey, which proposes a closed, positive combinatorial formula for symplectic Kostka-Foulkes polynomials, in the case of rows of arbitrary weight. To show this, we construct a new algorithm for computing cocyclage in terms of which the conjecture is described. Our algorithm is free of local constraints, which were the main obstacle in Lecouvey's original construction. In particular, we show that our model is governed by the situation in type A. This approach works for arbitrary weight and we expect it to lead to a proof of the conjecture in full generality.

Macdonald cumulants, $G$-inversion polynomials and $G$-parking functions
Published in European J. Combin., 75, 172-194, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a combinatorial formula for Macdonald cumulants which generalizes the celebrated formula of Haglund for Macdonald polynomials. We provide several applications of our formula. Firstly, it gives a new, constructive proof of a strong factorization property of Macdonald polynomials proven recently by the author of this paper. Moreover it proves that Macdonald cumulants are $q,t$--positive in the monomial and in the fundamental quasisymmetric bases. Furthermore, we use our formula to prove the recent higher-order Macdonald positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the Schur polynomials indexed by hooks. Our combinatorial formula relates Macdonald cumulants to the generating function of $G$-parking functions, or equivalently to a certain specialization of the Tutte polynomials.

Gaussian fluctuations of Jack-deformed random Young diagrams

We introduce a large class of random Young diagrams which can be regarded as a natural one-parameter deformation of some classical Young diagram ensembles; a deformation which is related to Jack polynomials and Jack characters. We show that each such a random Young diagram converges asymptotically to some limit shape and that the fluctuations around the limit are asymptotically Gaussian.

Strong factorization property of Macdonald polynomials and higher-order Macdonald's positivity conjecture
Published in J. Algebraic Combin., 46 (1), 135-163, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a strong factorization property of interpolation Macdonald polynomials when $q$ tends to $1$. As a consequence, we show that Macdonald polynomials have a strong factorization property when $q$ tends to $1$, which was posed as an open question in our previous paper with Féray. Furthermore, we introduce multivariate $q,t$-Kostka numbers and we show that they are polynomials in $q,t$ with integer coefficients by using the strong factorization property of Macdonald polynomials. We conjecture that multivariate $q,t$-Kostka numbers are in fact polynomials in $q,t$ with nonnegative integer coefficients, which generalizes the celebrated Macdonald's positivity conjecture.

Top degree part in $b$-conjecture for unicellular bipartite maps
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 24, no. 3, Paper 3.24 (2017) • Search Publication
Goulden and Jackson (1996) introduced, using Jack symmetric functions, some multivariate generating series $ψ(x, y, z; 1, 1+β)$ with an additional parameter $β$ that may be interpreted as a continuous deformation of the rooted bipartite maps generating series. Indeed, it has the property that for $β\in \{0,1\}$, it specializes to the rooted, orientable (general, i.e. orientable or not, respectively) bipartite maps generating series. They made the following conjecture: coefficients of $ψ$ are polynomials in $β$ with positive integer coefficients that can be written as a multivariate generating series of rooted, general bipartite maps, where the exponent of $β$ is an integer-valued statistic that in some sense "measures the non-orientability" of the corresponding bipartite map. We show that except for two special values of $β= 0,1$ for which the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of $ψ$ is known, there exists a third special value $β= -1$ for which the coefficients of $ψ$ indexed by two partitions $μ,ν$, and one partition with only one part are given by rooted, orientable bipartite maps with arbitrary face degrees and black/white vertex degrees given by $μ$/$ν$, respectively. We show that this evaluation corresponds, up to a sign, to a top-degree part of the coefficients of $ψ$. As a consequence, we introduce a collection of integer-valued statistics of maps $(η)$ such that the top-degree of the multivariate generating series of rooted bipartite maps with only one face (called unicellular) with respect to $η$ gives the top-degree of the appropriate coefficients of $ψ$. Finally, we show that the $b$-conjecture holds true for all rooted, unicellular bipartite maps of genus at most $2$.

Cumulants of Jack symmetric functions and $b$-conjecture
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 369 (12), 9015-9039, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
Goulden and Jackson (1996) introduced, using Jack symmetric functions, some multivariate generating series $ψ(x, y, z; t, 1+β)$ that might be interpreted as a continuous deformation of the generating series of rooted hypermaps. They made the following conjecture: the coefficients of $ψ(x, y, z; t, 1+β)$ in the power-sum basis are polynomials in $β$ with nonnegative integer coefficients (by construction, these coefficients are rational functions in $β$). We prove partially this conjecture, nowadays called $b$-conjecture, by showing that coefficients of $ψ(x, y, z; t, 1+ β)$ are polynomials in $β$ with rational coefficients. A key step of the proof is a strong factorization property of Jack polynomials when the Jack-deformation parameter $α$ tends to $0$, that may be of independent interest.
