Finite free convolution via reproducing kernels and squarefree algebras
We give a structural account of the finite free convolutions of Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava in terms of reproducing kernel inner products on polynomial spaces and a multilinear model over the squarefree algebra. In this model, additive convolution becomes algebra multiplication, and the nilpotent logarithm linearizes it, recovering the finite free cumulants of Arizmendi and Perales. This perspective leads to a class $\mathcal{LC}_n$ of multilinear polynomials characterized by nonpositivity of higher-order cumulants, closed under additive convolution and satisfying several key permanence properties associated with negatively dependent measures. We show that every graph Laplacian pencil belongs to this class, with higher-order cumulants given by Hamiltonian cycle counts in induced subgraphs.
Properties of tensorial free cumulants
In the past two years, several points of view have been proposed to address the question of the generalization of the theory of free probability to random tensors with different invariances, and it is unclear at this point whether they lead to the same notions of tensorial free cumulants and freeness. One way to approach this problem, developed by Collins, Gurau and the second named author for local unitary invariant random tensors, relies on finite size quantities involving averages over the invariance group, and whose asymptotics naturally possess the properties expected for tensorial generalizations of free cumulants of arbitrary orders. At this point, this approach has only been carried out for certain distributions, and for a subset of the moments that define such theories, and a more systematic and exhaustive study is lacking.
This is the program initiated in this paper: we link this approach to the one proposed by Nechita and Park; extend a number of their results as well as those of the aforementioned paper to arbitrary orders of fluctuations, thereby generalizing higher order free cumulants; push further the study of distributions with larger invariance groups; detail the link with the asymptotics of the free-energies of the tensor HCIZ and BGW integrals; and provide formulae for tensorial free cumulants of products of tensors.
Another important question is that of the definition of concrete distributions whose tensorial free-cumulants take non-trivial values. We compute the tensorial free cumulants for Gaussian random tensors with non-trivial covariances, and show that they provide such examples.
Convolution, cumulants and infinitesimal generators in the formal power series ring
We extend the notions of finite free convolution and finite free cumulants to the setting of formal power series by introducing their natural analogues, namely $t$-deformed convolution and $t$-deformed cumulants. In this framework, we establish $t$-deformed analogues of the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem, revealing structural parallels with classical, free, and finite free probability theories. We show that the case $t=-1$ recovers classical convolution at the level of moment generating functions, thereby connecting the theory directly to classical probability. We further investigate the infinitesimal generators associated with $\boxplus^t$-continuous semigroups, deriving explicit representation formulas that clarify how these generators describe the infinitesimal evolution of the semigroup. In the case $t = d$, our results yield explicit formulas for finite free infinitesimal generators. In the case $t = -1$, we relate these generators to those of one-dimensional Lévy processes by identifying the corresponding terms in their representations. This establishes a direct connection between $\boxplus^t$-convolution semigroups and classical Lévy-Khintchine-type generators.
Finite $N$ precursors of the free cumulants
We study $\mathrm{U}(N)$ invariant polynomials on the space of $N\times N$ matrices first introduced by Capitaine and Casalis, that are precursors of free cumulants in various respects. First, they are polynomials of deterministic matrices, that are not yet evaluated over some probability law, contrary to what is usually meant by cumulants. Secondly, they converge towards the algebraic expression of free cumulants in terms of moments as $N\to \infty$, with $1/N^2$ corrections expressed in terms of monotone Hurwitz numbers. Their most crucial property is their additivity with respect to averaging over sums of $\mathrm{U}(N)$ conjugacy orbits, providing a finite $N$ version of the well-known additivity of free cumulants in free probability. Finally, they extend several properties of free cumulants at finite $N$, including a Wick rule for their average over a Gaussian weight and their appearance in various matrix integrals. Building on the additivity property of these precursors, we also define and compute a coproduct describing the behaviour of general invariant polynomials with respect to the addition of $\mathrm{U}(N)$ conjugacy orbits, as well as their expectation values on sums of $\mathrm{U}(N)$-invariant random matrices. In our construction, a central role is played by the so-called HCIZ integral, both for the definition of the precursors and for the derivation of their properties.
Second order free cumulants: product, commutator, and anti-commutator
Given two second order free random variables $a$ and $b$, we study the second order free cumulants of their product $ab$, their commutator $ab-ba$, and their anti-commutator $ab+ba$. Let $(κ_n^a)_{n\geq 1}$ and $(κ_{n,m}^a)_{n,m\geq 1}$ denote the sequence of free cumulants of first and second order, respectively, of a random variable $a$ in a second order non-commutative probability space $(\mathcal{A},\varphi,\varphi^2)$. Given $a$ and $b$ two second order freely independent random variables, we provide formulas to compute each of the cumulants $(κ_{n,m}^{ab})_{n,m\geq 1}$, $(κ_{n,m}^{ab-ba})_{n,m\geq 1}$, and $(κ_{n,m}^{ab+ba})_{n,m\geq 1}$ in terms of the individual cumulants $(κ_{n}^{a})_{n\geq 1}$, $(κ_{n,m}^{a})_{n,m\geq 1}$, $(κ_{n}^{b})_{n\geq 1}$, and $(κ_{n,m}^{b})_{n,m\geq 1}$. For $n=m=1$ our formulas read: \begin{align*} κ_{1,1}^{ab} &= κ_{2}^{a}κ_{2}^{b} +κ_{1,1}^{a}(κ_{1}^{b})^2+κ_{1,1}^{b}(κ_{1}^{a})^2,\\ κ_{1,1}^{ab-ba} &= 2κ_{2}^{a}κ_{2}^{b},\\ κ_{1,1}^{ab+ba} &= 2κ_{2}^{a}κ_{2}^{b} +4κ_{1,1}^{a}(κ_{1}^{b})^2+4κ_{1,1}^{b}(κ_{1}^{a})^2. \end{align*}
In general, our formulas express the cumulants $κ_{n,m}^{ab}$, $κ_{n,m}^{ab-ba}$, and $κ_{n,m}^{ab+ba}$ as sums indexed by special subsets of non-crossing partitioned permutations. The formulas for the commutator and anti-commutator where not studied before, while the formula for the product was only known in the case the where the individual second order free cumulants vanish. As an application, we compute explicitly the cumulants of the anti-commutator and product of two second order free semicircular variables.
Discrete $N$-particle systems at high temperature through Jack generating functions
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the Law of Large Numbers for random discrete $N$-particle systems with the deformation (inverse temperature) parameter $θ$, as their size $N$ tends to infinity simultaneously with the inverse temperature going to zero. Our conditions are expressed in terms of the Jack generating functions, and our analysis is based on the asymptotics of the action of Cherednik operators obtained via Hecke relations. We apply the general framework to obtain the LLN for a large class of Markov chains of $N$ nonintersecting particles with interaction of log-gas type, and the LLN for the multiplication of Jack polynomials, as the inverse temperature tends to zero. We express the answer in terms of novel one-parameter deformations of cumulants and their description provided by us recovers previous work by Bufetov--Gorin on quantized free cumulants when $θ=1$, and by Benaych-Georges--Cuenca--Gorin after a deformation to continuous space of random matrix eigenvalues. Our methods are robust enough to be applied to the fixed temperature regime, where we recover the LLN of Huang.
Tensorial free convolution, semicircular, free Poisson and R-transform in high order
This work builds on our previous developments regarding a notion of freeness for tensors. We aim to establish a tensorial free convolution for compactly supported measures. First, we define higher-order analogues of the semicircular (or Wigner) law and the free Poisson (or Marcenko-Pastur) law, giving their moments and free cumulants. We prove the convergence of a Wishart-type tensor to the free Poisson law and recall the convergence of a Wigner tensor to the semicircular law. We also present a free Central Limit Theorem in this context. Next, we introduce a tensorial free convolution, define the $R$-transform, and provide the first examples of free convolution of measures.
Free cumulants and freeness for unitarily invariant random tensors
We address the question of the asymptotic description of random tensors that are local-unitary invariant, that is, invariant by conjugation by tensor products of independent unitary matrices. We consider both the mixed case of a tensor with $D$ inputs and $D$ outputs, and the case where there is a factorization between the inputs and outputs, called pure, which includes the random tensor models extensively studied in the physics literature.
The finite size and asymptotic moments are defined using correlations of certain invariant polynomials encoded by $D$-tuples of permutations, up to relabeling equivalence. Finite size free cumulants associated to the expectations of these invariants are defined through invertible finite size moment-cumulants formulas.
Two important cases are considered asymptotically: pure random tensors that scale like a complex Gaussian, and mixed random tensors that scale like a Wishart tensor. In both cases, we derive a notion of tensorial free cumulants associated to first order invariants, through moment-cumulant formulas involving summations over non-crossing permutations. The pure and mixed cases involve the same combinatorics, but differ by the invariants that define the distribution at first order. In both cases, the tensorial free-cumulants of a sum of two independent tensors are shown to be additive. A preliminary discussion of higher orders is provided.
Tensor freeness is then defined as the vanishing of mixed first order tensorial free cumulants. The equivalent formulation at the level of asymptotic moments is derived in the pure and mixed cases, and we provide an algebraic construction of tensorial probability spaces, which generalize non-commutative probability spaces: random tensors converge in distribution to elements of these spaces, and tensor freeness of random variables corresponds to tensor freeness of the subspaces they generate.
Boolean, Free, and Classical Cumulants as Tree Enumerations
Defant found that the relationship between a sequence of (univariate) classical cumulants and the corresponding sequence of (univariate) free cumulants can be described combinatorially in terms of families of binary plane trees called troupes. Using a generalization of troupes that we call weighted troupes, we generalize this result to allow for multivariate cumulants. Our result also gives a combinatorial description of the corresponding Boolean cumulants. This allows us to answer a question of Defant regarding his troupe transform. We also provide explicit distributions whose cumulants correspond to some specific weighted troupes.
Cumulants in rectangular finite free probability and beta-deformed singular values
Motivated by the $(q,γ)$-cumulants, introduced by Xu [arXiv:2303.13812] to study $β$-deformed singular values of random matrices, we define the $(n,d)$-rectangular cumulants for polynomials of degree $d$ and prove several moment-cumulant formulas by elementary algebraic manipulations; the proof naturally leads to quantum analogues of the formulas. We further show that the $(n,d)$-rectangular cumulants linearize the $(n,d)$-rectangular convolution from Finite Free Probability and that they converge to the $q$-rectangular free cumulants from Free Probability in the regime where $d\to\infty$, $1+n/d\to q\in[1,\infty)$. As an application, we employ our formulas to study limits of symmetric empirical root distributions of sequences of polynomials with nonnegative roots. One of our results is akin to a theorem of Kabluchko [arXiv:2203.05533] and shows that applying the operator $\exp(-\frac{s^2}{n}x^{-n}D_xx^{n+1}D_x)$, where $s>0$, asymptotically amounts to taking the rectangular free convolution with the rectangular Gaussian distribution of variance $qs^2/(q-1)$.
Decomposition of free cumulants
Free cumulants are multilinear functionals defined in terms of the moment functional with the use of the family of lattices of noncrossing partitions. In the univariate case, they can be identified with the coefficients of the Voiculescu transform of the moment functional which plays a role similar to that of the logarithm of the Fourier transform. The associated linearization property is connected with free independence. In turn, the family of much smaller lattices of interval partitions is used to define Boolean cumulants connected with Boolean independence. In order to bridge the gap between these two families of lattices and the associated cumulants we introduce and study the family of lattices of noncrossing partitions adapted to Motzkin paths and define the associated operator-valued `Motzkin cumulants'. We prove the corresponding Möbius inversion formula which plays the role of a lattice refinement of the formula expressing free cumulants in terms of Boolean cumulants. We apply this concept to free probability and obtain the additive decomposition of free cumulants in terms of scalar-valued counterparts of Motzkin cumulants.
Rectangular matrix additions in low and high temperatures
We study the addition of two random independent $M\times N$ rectangular random matrices with invariant distributions in two limit regimes, where the parameter beta (inverse temperature) goes to infinity and zero. In low temperature regime the random singular values of the sum concentrate at deterministic points, while in high temperature regime we obtain a Law of Large Numbers for the empirical measures. As a consequence, we deliver a duality between low and high temperatures. Our proof uses the type BC Bessel function as characteristic function of rectangular matrices, and through the analysis of this function we introduce a new family of cumulants, that linearize the addition in high temperature limit, and degenerate to the classical or free cumulants in special cases.
Counting partitions by genus. I. Genus 0 to 2
The counting of partitions according to their genus is revisited. The case of genus 0 -- non-crossing partitions -- is well known. Our approach relies on two pillars: first a functional equation between generating functions, originally written in genus 0 and interpreted graphically by Cvitanovic, is generalized to higher genus; secondly, we show that all partitions may be reconstructed from the "(semi)-primitive" ones introduced by Cori and Hetyei. Explicit results for the generating functions of all types of partitions are obtained in genus 1 and 2. This gives a second order interpolation between expansions on ordinary or on free cumulants
From higher order free cumulants to non-separable hypermaps
Higher order free moments and cumulants, introduced by Collins, Mingo, Śniady and Speicher in 2006, describe the fluctuations of unitarily invariant random matrices in the limit of infinite size. The functional relations between their generating functions were only found last year by Borot, Garcia-Failde, Charbonnier, Leid and Shadrin and a combinatorial derivation is still missing. We simplify these relations and show how their combinatorial derivation reduces to the computation of generating functions of planar non-separable hypermaps with prescribed vertex valencies and weighted hyper-edges. The functional relations obtained by Borot et al. involve some remarkable simplifications, which can be formulated as identities satisfied by these generating functions. The case of third order free cumulants, whose combinatorial understanding was already out of reach, is derived explicitly.

Let $W_{g,n}$ be the correlators computed by Topological Recursion for some given spectral curve $(x,y)$ and $W^\vee_{g,n}$ for $(y,x)$, where the role of $x,y$ is inverted. These two sets of correlators $W_{g,n}$ and $W^\vee_{g,n}$ are related by the $x$-$y$ symplectic transformation. Bychkov, Dunin-Barkowski, Kazarian and Shadrin computed a functional relation between two slightly different sets of correlators. Together with Alexandrov, they proved that their functional relation is indeed the $x$-$y$ symplectic transformation in Topological Recursion. This article provides a fairly simple formula directly between $W_{g,n}$ and $W^\vee_{g,n}$ which holds by their theorem for meromorphic $x$ and $y$ with simple and distinct ramification points. Due to the recent connection between free probability and fully simple vs ordinary maps, we conclude a simplified moment-cumulant relation for moments and higher order free cumulants.
Third order moments of complex Wigner matrices
We compute the third order moments of a complex Wigner matrix. We provide a formula for the third order moments $α_{m_1,m_2,m_3}$ in terms of quotient graphs $T_{m_1,m_2,m_3}^π$ where $π$ is the Kreweras complement of a non-crossing pairing on the annulus. We prove that these graphs can be counted using the set of partitioned permutations, this permits us to write the third order moments in terms of the high order free cumulants which have a simple expression.

Topological Recursion generates a family of symmetric differential forms (correlators) from some initial data $(Σ,x,y,B)$. We give a functional relation between the correlators of genus $g=0$ generated by the initial data $(Σ,x,y,B)$ and by the initial data $(Σ,y,x,B)$, where $x$ and $y$ are interchanged. The functional relation is derived with the loop insertion operator by computing a functional relation for some intermediate correlators. Additionally, we show that our result is equivalent to the recent result of \cite{Borot:2021thu} in case of $g=0$. Consequently, we are providing a simplified functional relation between generating series of higher order free cumulants and moments in higher order free probability.
Functional relations for higher-order free cumulants
We establish the functional relations between generating series of higher-order free cumulants and moments in higher-order free probability, solving an open problem posed fifteen years ago by Collins, Mingo, Śniady and Speicher. We propose an extension of free probability theory, which governs the all-order topological expansion in unitarily invariant matrix ensembles, with a corresponding notion of free cumulants and give as well their relation to moments via functional relations. Our approach is based on the study of a master transformation involving double monotone Hurwitz numbers via semi-infinite wedge techniques, building on the recent advances of the last-named author with Bychkov, Dunin-Barkowski and Kazarian. We illustrate our formulas by computing the first few decaying terms of the correlation functions of an ensemble of spiked GUE matrices, going beyond the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem.

The Quantum Symmetric Simple Exclusion Process (QSSEP) is a model of quantum particles hopping on a finite interval and satisfying the exclusion principle. Recently Bernard and Jin have studied the fluctuations of the invariant measure for this process, when the number of sites goes to infinity. These fluctuations are encoded into polynomials, for which they have given equations and proved that these equations determine the polynomials completely. In this paper, I give an explicit combinatorial formula for these polynomials, in terms of Schröder trees. I also show that, quite surprisingly, these polynomials can be interpreted as free cumulants of a family of commuting random variables.
Limits of Probability Measures with General Coefficients
We study the convergence of probability measures in terms of moments by applying operators to their Bessel generating functions. We consider a general setting of applying operators such as the Dunkl operator to formal power series that are symmetric or symmetric in all but one variable. Afterwards, we apply the results from this setting by considering Bessel generating functions as the formal power series to obtain a Law of Large Numbers as $N$, the number of variables, increases to infinity and $N^cβ$ converges to a constant, where $c\in (-\infty, 1)$. In contrast with previous results, we consider when the scaled partial derivatives of the logarithms of the Bessel generating functions evaluated at the origin can have nonzero $N\rightarrow\infty$ limit when any number of variables is involved. Then, the free cumulant of order $k$ is a linear combination of the limits of the order $k$ partial derivatives.
