Weingarten calculus with virtual isometries
In this paper, we develop a novel approach to the Weingarten calculus employing the notion of virtual isometries. Traditionally, Weingarten calculus provides explicit formulas for integrating polynomial functions over compact matrix groups with respect to the Haar measure, yet faces limitations when evaluating high-degree integrals due to the non-invertibility of the associated matrices. We revisit these classical computations from a new perspective: by constructing Haar-distributed matrices via sequences of complex reflections, we derive new recursive structures for the Weingarten functions across different dimensions. This framework leads to two main results: (1) an explicit Weingarten calculus for complex reflections, yielding systematic moment computations for associated rank-one matrices, and (2) a novel convolution formula that connects Weingarten functions in dimension $n$ to those in dimension $n-1$ through the introduction of ascension functions in the symmetric group algebra. Our approach not only provides a unified treatment for unitary groups, but also sheds light on the algebraic and probabilistic aspects of high-degree integral computations. Several examples and applications are presented.

Weingarten calculus for centered random permutation matrices
We introduce and study the Weingarten calculus for centered random permutation matrices in the symmetric group S_N. After presenting a formulation of the Weingarten calculus on the symmetric group, we derive a formula in the centered case, as well as a sign-respecting formula. Our investigations uncover the fact that a building block of this Weingarten calculus is Kummer's confluent hypergeometric function. It allows us to derive multiple algebraic properties of the Weingarten function and uniform estimate. These results shed a conceptual light on phenomena that take place regarding the algebraic and asymptotic behavior of moments of random permutations in the resolution of Bordenave and Bordenave-Collins of strong convergence. We obtain multiple new non-trivial estimates for moments of coefficients in centered moments.

Free cumulants and freeness for unitarily invariant random tensors
We address the question of the asymptotic description of random tensors that are local-unitary invariant, that is, invariant by conjugation by tensor products of independent unitary matrices. We consider both the mixed case of a tensor with $D$ inputs and $D$ outputs, and the case where there is a factorization between the inputs and outputs, called pure, which includes the random tensor models extensively studied in the physics literature. The finite size and asymptotic moments are defined using correlations of certain invariant polynomials encoded by $D$-tuples of permutations, up to relabeling equivalence. Finite size free cumulants associated to the expectations of these invariants are defined through invertible finite size moment-cumulants formulas. Two important cases are considered asymptotically: pure random tensors that scale like a complex Gaussian, and mixed random tensors that scale like a Wishart tensor. In both cases, we derive a notion of tensorial free cumulants associated to first order invariants, through moment-cumulant formulas involving summations over non-crossing permutations. The pure and mixed cases involve the same combinatorics, but differ by the invariants that define the distribution at first order. In both cases, the tensorial free-cumulants of a sum of two independent tensors are shown to be additive. A preliminary discussion of higher orders is provided. Tensor freeness is then defined as the vanishing of mixed first order tensorial free cumulants. The equivalent formulation at the level of asymptotic moments is derived in the pure and mixed cases, and we provide an algebraic construction of tensorial probability spaces, which generalize non-commutative probability spaces: random tensors converge in distribution to elements of these spaces, and tensor freeness of random variables corresponds to tensor freeness of the subspaces they generate.

On spectral distribution of sample covariance matrices from large dimensional and large $k$-fold tensor products
Published in Electronic Journal of Probability (2022) 27, 1-18 • View PublicationBIB
We study the eigenvalue distributions for sums of independent rank-one $k$-fold tensor products of large $n$-dimensional vectors. Previous results in the literature assume that $k=o(n)$ and show that the eigenvalue distributions converge to the celebrated Marčenko-Pastur law under appropriate moment conditions on the base vectors. In this paper, motivated by quantum information theory, we study the regime where $k$ grows faster, namely $k=O(n)$. We show that the moment sequences of the eigenvalue distributions have a limit, which is different from the Marčenko-Pastur law. As a byproduct, we show that the Marčenko-Pastur law limit holds if and only if $k=o(n)$ for this tensor model. The approach is based on the method of moments.

The tensor Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral I: Weingarten calculus and a generalization of monotone Hurwitz numbers
Published in Journal of the European Mathematical Society (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We study a generalization of the Harish-Chandra - Itzykson - Zuber integral to tensors and its expansion over trace-invariants of the two external tensors. This gives rise to natural generalizations of monotone double Hurwitz numbers, which count certain families of constellations. We find an expression of these numbers in terms of monotone simple Hurwitz numbers, thereby also providing expressions for monotone double Hurwitz numbers of arbitrary genus in terms of the single ones. We give an interpretation of the different combinatorial quantities at play in terms of enumeration of nodal surfaces. In particular, our generalization of Hurwitz numbers is shown to enumerate certain isomorphism classes of branched coverings of a bouquet of $D$ 2-spheres that touch at one common non-branch node.
Asymptotic Freeness of Unitary Matrices in Tensor Product Spaces for Invariant States
Published in Random Matrices: Theory and Applications (2023) 12, no. 02: 2250052 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we pursue our study of asymptotic properties of families of random matrices that have a tensor structure. In previous work, the first- and second-named authors provided conditions under which tensor products of unitary random matrices are asymptotically free with respect to the normalized trace. Here, we extend this result by proving that asymptotic freeness of tensor products of Haar unitary matrices holds with respect to a significantly larger class of states. Our result relies on invariance under the symmetric group, and therefore on traffic probability. As a byproduct, we explore two additional generalisations: (i) we state results of freeness in a context of general sequences of representations of the unitary group -- the fundamental representation being a particular case that corresponds to the classical asymptotic freeness result for Haar unitary matrices, and (ii) we consider actions of the symmetric group and the free group simultaneously and obtain a result of asymptotic freeness in this context as well.

Eigenvalues of random lifts and polynomials of random permutation matrices
Published in Annals of Mathematics 190 (2019), no. 3, 811-75 • View PublicationBIB
Consider a finite sequence of independent random permutations, chosen uniformly either among all permutations or among all matchings on n points. We show that, in probability, as n goes to infinity, these permutations viewed as operators on the (n-1) dimensional vector space orthogonal to the vector with all coordinates equal to 1, are asymptotically strongly free. Our proof relies on the development of a matrix version of the non-backtracking operator theory and a refined trace method. As a byproduct, we show that the non-trivial eigenvalues of random n-lifts of a fixed based graphs approximately achieve the Alon-Boppana bound with high probability in the large n limit. This result generalizes Friedman's Theorem stating that with high probability, the Schreier graph generated by a finite number of independent random permutations is close to Ramanujan. Finally, we extend our results to tensor products of random permutation matrices. This extension is especially relevant in the context of quantum expanders.

Weingarten calculus via orthogonality relations: new applications
Published in ALEA, Lat. Am. J. Probab. Math. Stat. 14 (2017), no. 1, 631-656 • View PublicationBIB
Weingarten calculus is a completely general and explicit method to compute the moments of the Haar measure on compact subgroups of matrix algebras. Particular cases of this calculus were initiated by theoretical physicists -- including Weingarten, after whom this calculus was coined by the first author, after investigating it systematically. Substantial progress was achieved subsequently by the second author and coworkers, based on representation theoretic and combinatorial techniques. All formulas of `Weingarten calculus' are in the spirit of Weingarten's seminal paper [W78]. However, modern proofs are very different from Weingarten's initial ideas. In this paper, we revisit Weingarten's initial proof and we illustrate its power by uncovering two new important applications: (i) a uniform bound on the Weingarten function, that subsumes existing uniform bounds, and is optimal up to a polynomial factor, and (ii) an extension of Weingarten calculus to symmetric spaces and conceptual proofs of identities established by the second author.

Semiclassical asymptotics of $\operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{C})$ tensor products and quantum random matrices
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 24 (2018), no. 3, 2571-2623 • View PublicationBIB
The Littlewood--Richardson process is a discrete random point process arising from the isotypic decomposition of tensor products of irreducible representations of $\operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{C})$. Biane--Perelomov--Popov matrices are quantum random matrices obtained as the geometric quantization of random Hermitian matrices with deterministic eigenvalues and uniformly random eigenvectors. As first observed by Biane, correlation functions of certain global observables of the LR process coincide with correlation functions of linear statistics of sums of classically independent BPP matrices, thereby enabling a random matrix approach to the statistical study of $\operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{C})$ tensor products. In this paper, we prove an optimal result: classically independent BPP matrices become freely independent in any semiclassical/large-dimension limit. This proves and generalizes a conjecture of Bufetov and Gorin, and leads to a Law of Large Numbers for the BPP observables of the LR process which holds in any and all semiclassical scalings.

Matrix Units in the Symmetric Group Algebra, and Unitary Integration
In this paper, we establish an explicit isomorphism between the symmetric group algebra and the path algebra of the Young graph. Specifically, we construct a family of matrix units in the group algebra. As a main application of this construction, we obtain new formulas, alternative to Weingarten calculus, for the integral of a polynomial over the unitary group with respect to the Haar measure. In particular, we obtain a closed formula for the law of moments of the first k rows of the unitary group.

Dimensions of components of tensor products of the linear groups representations with applications to Beurling-Fourier algebras
Published in Studia Math. 220 (2014), no. 3, 221-241 • View PublicationBIB
We give universal upper bounds on the relative dimensions of isotypic components of a tensor product of the linear group GL(n) representations and universal upper bounds on the relative dimensions of irreducible components of a tensor product of the special linear group SL(n) representations. This problem is motivated by harmonic analysis problems, and we give some applications of this result in the theory of Beurling-Fourier algebras.
Random graph states, maximal flow and Fuss-Catalan distributions
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 43 (2010), no. 27, 275303 • View PublicationBIB
For any graph consisting of $k$ vertices and $m$ edges we construct an ensemble of random pure quantum states which describe a system composed of $2m$ subsystems. Each edge of the graph represents a bi-partite, maximally entangled state. Each vertex represents a random unitary matrix generated according to the Haar measure, which describes the coupling between subsystems. Dividing all subsystems into two parts, one may study entanglement with respect to this partition. A general technique to derive an expression for the average entanglement entropy of random pure states associated to a given graph is presented. Our technique relies on Weingarten calculus and flow problems. We analyze statistical properties of spectra of such random density matrices and show for which cases they are described by the free Poissonian (Marchenko-Pastur) distribution. We derive a discrete family of generalized, Fuss-Catalan distributions and explicitly construct graphs which lead to ensembles of random states characterized by these novel distributions of eigenvalues.
On orthogonal matrices maximizing the 1-norm
Published in Indiana Univ. Math. J. 59 (2010), no. 3, 839-856 • View PublicationBIB
For $U\in O(N)$ we have $||U||_1\leq N\sqrt{N}$, with equality if and only if $U=H/\sqrt{N}$, with $H$ Hadamard matrix. Motivated by this remark, we discuss in this paper the algebraic and analytic aspects of the computation of the maximum of the 1-norm on O(N). The main problem is to compute the $k$-th moment of the 1-norm, with $k\to\infty$, and we present a number of general comments in this direction.

We find a combinatorial formula for the Haar measure of quantum permutation groups. This leads to a dynamic formula for laws of diagonal coefficients, explaining the Poisson/free Poisson convergence result for characters.
