Robust Hadamard matrices, unistochastic rays in Birkhoff polytope and equi-entangled bases in composite spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a special class of (real or complex) robust Hadamard matrices, distinguished by the property that their projection onto a $2$-dimensional subspace forms a Hadamard matrix. It is shown that such a matrix of order $n$ exists, if there exists a skew Hadamard matrix of this size. This is the case for any even dimension $n\le 20$, and for these dimensions we demonstrate that a bistochastic matrix $B$ located at any ray of the Birkhoff polytope, (which joins the center of this body with any permutation matrix), is unistochastic. An explicit form of the corresponding unitary matrix $U$, such that $B_{ij}=|U_{ij}|^2$, is determined by a robust Hadamard matrix. These unitary matrices allow us to construct a family of orthogonal bases in the composed Hilbert space of order $n \times n$. Each basis consists of vectors with the same degree of entanglement and the constructed family interpolates between the product basis and the maximally entangled basis.

Coarse-grained entanglement classification through orthogonal arrays
Published • View PublicationBIB
Classification of entanglement in multipartite quantum systems is an open problem solved so far only for bipartite systems and for systems composed of three and four qubits. We propose here a coarse-grained classification of entanglement in systems consisting of $N$ subsystems with an arbitrary number of internal levels each, based on properties of orthogonal arrays with $N$ columns. In particular, we investigate in detail a subset of highly entangled pure states which contains all states defining maximum distance separable codes. To illustrate the methods presented, we analyze systems of four and five qubits, as well as heterogeneous tripartite systems consisting of two qubits and one qutrit or one qubit and two qutrits.

Almost Hadamard matrices: general theory and examples
Published in Open Syst. Inf. Dyn. 19 (2012), 1-26 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a general theory of "almost Hadamard matrices". These are by definition the matrices $H\in M_N(\mathbb R)$ having the property that $U=H/\sqrt{N}$ is orthogonal, and is a local maximum of the 1-norm on O(N). Our study includes a detailed discussion of the circulant case ($H_{ij}=γ_{j-i}$) and of the two-entry case ($H_{ij}\in{x,y}$), with the construction of several families of examples, and some 1-norm computations.
Random graph states, maximal flow and Fuss-Catalan distributions
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 43 (2010), no. 27, 275303 • View PublicationBIB
For any graph consisting of $k$ vertices and $m$ edges we construct an ensemble of random pure quantum states which describe a system composed of $2m$ subsystems. Each edge of the graph represents a bi-partite, maximally entangled state. Each vertex represents a random unitary matrix generated according to the Haar measure, which describes the coupling between subsystems. Dividing all subsystems into two parts, one may study entanglement with respect to this partition. A general technique to derive an expression for the average entanglement entropy of random pure states associated to a given graph is presented. Our technique relies on Weingarten calculus and flow problems. We analyze statistical properties of spectra of such random density matrices and show for which cases they are described by the free Poissonian (Marchenko-Pastur) distribution. We derive a discrete family of generalized, Fuss-Catalan distributions and explicitly construct graphs which lead to ensembles of random states characterized by these novel distributions of eigenvalues.

A concise guide to complex Hadamard matrices
Published in Open Syst. Inf. Dyn. 13, 133-177 (2006) • View PublicationBIB
Complex Hadamard matrices, consisting of unimodular entries with arbitrary phases, play an important role in the theory of quantum information. We review basic properties of complex Hadamard matrices and present a catalogue of inequivalent cases known for dimension N=2,...,16. In particular, we explicitly write down some families of complex Hadamard matrices for N=12,14 and 16, which we could not find in the existing literature.
Birkhoff's polytope and unistochastic matrices, N=3 and N=4
Published in Final version in Commun. Math. Phys. 259, 307-324 (2005) • View PublicationBIB
The set of bistochastic or doubly stochastic N by N matrices form a convex set called Birkhoff's polytope, that we describe in some detail. Our problem is to characterize the set of unistochastic matrices as a subset of Birkhoff's polytope. For N=3 we present fairly complete results. For N=4 partial results are obtained. An interesting difference between the two cases is that there is a ball of unistochastic matrices around the van der Waerden matrix for N=3, while this is not the case for N=4.
