Isolated partial Hadamard matrices, and related topics
Published in Open Syst. Inf. Dyn. 25 (2018), 1-27 • View PublicationBIB
We study the isolated partial Hadamard matrices, under the assumption that the entries are roots of unity, or more generally, under the assumption that the combinatorics comes from vanishing sums of roots of unity. We first review the various conjectures on the subject, and then we present several new results, regarding notably the master Hadamard matrices, and the McNulty-Weigert construction. We discuss then the notion of isolation in some related contexts, of the magic unitary matrices, and of the quantum permutation groups, with a number of conjectures on the subject.

Complex Hadamard matrices with noncommutative entries
Published in Ann. Funct. Anal. 9, no. 3 (2018), 354-368 • View PublicationBIB
We axiomatize and study the matrices of type $H\in M_N(A)$, having unitary entries, $H_{ij}\in U(A)$, and whose rows and columns are subject to orthogonality type conditions. Here $A$ can be any $C^*$-algebra, for instance $A=\mathbb C$, where we obtain the usual complex Hadamard matrices, or $A=C(X)$, where we obtain the continuous families of complex Hadamard matrices. Our formalism allows the construction of a quantum permutation group $G\subset S_N^+$, whose structure and computation is discussed here.

Almost Hadamard matrices with complex entries
Published in Adv. Oper. Theory 3 (2018), 149-189 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss an extension of the almost Hadamard matrix formalism, to the case of complex matrices. Quite surprisingly, the situation here is very different from the one in the real case, and our conjectural conclusion is that there should be no such matrices, besides the usual Hadamard ones. We verify this conjecture in a number of situations, and notably for most of the known examples of real almost Hadamard matrices, and for some of their complex extensions. We discuss as well some potential applications of our conjecture, to the general study of complex Hadamard matrices.

The glow of Fourier matrices: universality and fluctuations
Published in Oper. Matrices 9 (2015), 457-474 • View PublicationBIB
The glow of an Hadamard matrix $H\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ is the probability measure $μ\in\mathcal P(\mathbb C)$ describing the distribution of $\varphi(a,b)=<a,Hb>$, where $a,b\in\mathbb T^N$ are random. We prove that $\varphi/N$ becomes complex Gaussian with $N\to\infty$, and that the universality holds as well at order 2. In the case of a Fourier matrix, $F_G\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ with $|G|=N$, the universality holds up to order 4, and the fluctuations are encoded by certain subtle integrals, which appear in connection with several Hadamard-related questions. In the Walsh matrix case, $G=\mathbb Z_2^n$, we conjecture that the glow is polynomial in $N=2^n$.

The Gale-Berlekamp game for complex Hadamard matrices
Associated to a complex Hadamard matrix $H\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ is the complex probability measure $μ\in\mathcal P(\mathbb C)$ describing the distribution of $\varphi(a,b)=<a,Hb>$, where $a,b\in\mathbb T^N$ are random. This measure is called "glow" of the matrix, due to the analogy with the Gale-Berlekamp switching game, where $H,a,b$ are real. We prove here that: (1) $μ$ becomes complex Gaussian in the $N\to\infty$ limit, (2) the universality holds as well at order 2, (3) the order 3 term seems to be quite interesting, particularly for the master Hadamard matrices, (4) in the Fourier matrix case, some of the higher order terms control counting problems for circulant Hadamard matrices.

Regularity questions for complex Hadamard matrices
We study the partial Hadamard matrices $H\in M_{M\times N}(\mathbb C)$ which are regular, in the sense that the scalar products between pairs of distinct rows decompose as sums of cycles (rotated sums of roots of unity). The simplest non-trivial case is M=3, and we obtain here several results, notably with a classification at N=7. We discuss as well the potential applications of the M=3 results to various $M=N$ questions.

The Gale-Berlekamp game for Hadamard matrices
Given an Hadamard matrix $H\in M_N(\pm1)$ we consider the function $\varphi:\mathbb Z_2^N\times\mathbb Z_2^N\to\mathbb Z$ given by $\varphi(a,b)=\sum_{ij}a_ib_jH_{ij}$, which sums the entries of the various conjugates of $H$, obtained by switching signs on rows and columns. Our claim is that $\varphi$, or just its probabilistic distribution $μ\in\mathcal P(\mathbb Z)$, that we call "glow" of the matrix, should encode important information about $H$. We present here a number of results and conjectures in this direction, notably with a general decomposition result for $μ$.

First order deformations of the Fourier matrix
Published in J. Math. Phys. 55 (2014), 1-22 • View PublicationBIB
The $N\times N$ complex Hadamard matrices form a real algebraic manifold $C_N$. The singularity at a point $H\in C_N$ is described by a filtration of cones $T^\times_HC_N\subset T^\circ_HC_N\subset T_HC_N\subset\widetilde{T}_HC_N$, coming from the trivial, affine, smooth and first order deformations. We study here these cones in the case where $H=F_N$ is the Fourier matrix, $(w^{ij})$ with $w=e^{2πi/N}$, our main result being a simple description of $\widetilde{T}_HC_N$. As a consequence, the rationality conjecture $dim_\mathbb R(\widetilde{T}_HC_N)=dim_\mathbb Q(\widetilde{T}_HC_N\cap M_N(\mathbb Q))$ holds at $H=F_N$.

Analytic aspects of the circulant Hadamard conjecture
Published in Ann. Math. Blaise Pascal 21 (2014), 25-59 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the problem of counting the real or complex Hadamard matrices which are circulant, by using analytic methods. Our main observation is the fact that for $|q_0|=...=|q_{N-1}|=1$ the quantity $Φ=\sum_{i+k=j+l}\frac{q_iq_k}{q_jq_l}$ satisfies $Φ\geq N^2$, with equality if and only if $q=(q_i)$ is the eigenvalue vector of a rescaled circulant complex Hadamard matrix. This suggests three analytic problems, namely: (1) the brute-force minimization of $Φ$, (2) the study of the critical points of $Φ$, and (3) the computation of the moments of $Φ$. We explore here these questions, with some results and conjectures.

Almost Hadamard matrices: the case of arbitrary exponents
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 161 (2013), 2367-2379 • View PublicationBIB
In our previous work, we introduced the following relaxation of the Hadamard property: a square matrix $H\in M_N(\mathbb R)$ is called "almost Hadamard" if $U=H/\sqrt{N}$ is orthogonal, and locally maximizes the 1-norm on O(N). We review our previous results, notably with the formulation of a new question, regarding the circulant and symmetric case. We discuss then an extension of the almost Hadamard matrix formalism, by making use of the p-norm on O(N), with $p\in[1,\infty]-{2}$, with a number of theoretical results on the subject, and the formulation of some open problems.

The defect of generalized Fourier matrices
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 438 (2013), 3667-3688 • View PublicationBIB
The $N\times N$ complex Hadamard matrices form a real algebraic manifold $C_N$. We have $C_N=M_N(\mathbb T)\cap\sqrt{N}U_N$, and following Tadej and Życzkowski we investigate here the computation of the enveloping tangent space $\widetilde{T}_HC_N=T_HM_N(\mathbb T)\cap T_H\sqrt{N}U_N$, and notably of its dimension $d(H)=\dim(\widetilde{T}_HC_N)$, called undephased defect of $H$. Our main result is an explicit formula for the defect of the Fourier matrix $F_G$ associated to an arbitrary finite abelian group $G=\mathbb Z_{N_1}\times...\times\mathbb Z_{N_r}$. We also comment on the general question "does the associated quantum permutation group see the defect", with a probabilistic speculation involving Diaconis-Shahshahani type variables.

Almost Hadamard matrices: general theory and examples
Published in Open Syst. Inf. Dyn. 19 (2012), 1-26 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a general theory of "almost Hadamard matrices". These are by definition the matrices $H\in M_N(\mathbb R)$ having the property that $U=H/\sqrt{N}$ is orthogonal, and is a local maximum of the 1-norm on O(N). Our study includes a detailed discussion of the circulant case ($H_{ij}=γ_{j-i}$) and of the two-entry case ($H_{ij}\in{x,y}$), with the construction of several families of examples, and some 1-norm computations.

Combinatorial aspects of orthogonal group integrals
Published in Internat. J. Math. 22 (2011), 1611-1646 • View PublicationBIB
We study the integrals of type $I(a)=\int_{O_n}\prod u_{ij}^{a_{ij}}\,du$, depending on a matrix $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, whose exact computation is an open problem. Our results are as follows: (1) an extension of the "elementary expansion" formula from the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(2\mathbb N)$ to the general case $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (2) the construction of the "best algebraic normalization" of $I(a)$, in the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (3) an explicit formula for $I(a)$, for diagonal matrices $a\in M_{3\times 3}(\mathbb N)$, (4) a modelling result in the case $a\in M_{1\times 2}(\mathbb N)$, in relation with the Euler-Rodrigues formula. Most proofs use various combinatorial techniques.
On orthogonal matrices maximizing the 1-norm
Published in Indiana Univ. Math. J. 59 (2010), no. 3, 839-856 • View PublicationBIB
For $U\in O(N)$ we have $||U||_1\leq N\sqrt{N}$, with equality if and only if $U=H/\sqrt{N}$, with $H$ Hadamard matrix. Motivated by this remark, we discuss in this paper the algebraic and analytic aspects of the computation of the maximum of the 1-norm on O(N). The main problem is to compute the $k$-th moment of the 1-norm, with $k\to\infty$, and we present a number of general comments in this direction.

We find a combinatorial formula for the Haar measure of quantum permutation groups. This leads to a dynamic formula for laws of diagonal coefficients, explaining the Poisson/free Poisson convergence result for characters.

Graphs having no quantum symmetry
Published in Ann. Inst. Fourier 57 (2007), 955-971 • View PublicationBIB
We consider circulant graphs having $p$ vertices, with $p$ prime. To any such graph we associate a certain number $k$, that we call type of the graph. We prove that for $p>>k$ the graph has no quantum symmetry, in the sense that the quantum automorphism group reduces to the classical automorphism group.

Quantum automorphism groups of vertex-transitive graphs of order $\leq 11$
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 26 (2007), 83-105 • View PublicationBIB
We study quantum automorphism groups of vertex-transitive graphs having less than 11 vertices. With one possible exception, these can be obtained from cyclic groups ${\mathbb Z}_n$, symmetric groups $S_n$ and quantum symmetric groups $\mathcal Q_n$, by using various product operations. The exceptional case is that of the Petersen graph, and we present some questions about it.
