Eigenvalue Distribution of Large Weighted Random Sparse Uniform $q$-Hypergraphs
We study eigenvalue distribution of the adjacency matrix $A^{(N,p,q)}$ of weighted random uniform $q$-hypergraphs $Γ= Γ_{N,p,q}$. We assume that the graphs have $N$ vertices and the average number of hyperedges attached to one vertex is $(q-1)!\cdot p$. To each edge of the graph $e_{ij}$ we assign a weight given by a random variable $a_{ij}$ with all moments finite. We consider the moments of normalized eigenvalue counting function $σ_{N,p,q}$ of $A^{(N,p,q)}$. Assuming all moments of $a$ finite, we obtain recurrent relations that determine the moments of the limiting measure $σ_{p,q} = \lim_{N\to\infty} σ_{N,p,q}$.

Girth and Laplacian eigenvalue distribution
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ with girth $g$. For $k=1,\dots,\min\{g-1, n-g\}$, let $n(G,k)$ be the number of Laplacian eigenvalues (counting multiplicities) of $G$ that fall inside the interval $[n-g-k+4,n]$. We prove that if $g\ge 4$, then \[ n(G,k)\le n-g. \] Those graphs achieving the bound for $k=1,2$ are determined. We also determine the graphs $G$ with $g=3$ such that $n(G,k)=n-1, n-2, n-3$.

Laplacian eigenvalue distribution and girth of graphs
Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices with girth $g$. Let $m_GI$ denote the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of graph $G$ in an interval $I$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is not a cycle, then $m_G(n-g+3,n]\leq n-g$. Moreover, we prove that $m_G(n-g+3,n]= n-g$ if and only if $G\cong C_3$ or $G\cong K_{3,2}$ or $G\cong U_1$, where $U_1$ is obtained from a cycle by joining a single vertex with a vertex of this cycle.

Diameter vs Laplacian eigenvalue distribution
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. It is known that any Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$ belongs to the interval $[0,n]$. For an interval $I\subseteq [0, n]$, denote by $m_GI$ the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ in $I$, counted with multiplicity. When $G$ is connected, known results on the Laplacian eigenvalue distribution related to the diameter $d$ of $G$ include: $m_G[n-d+2,n]\le n-d$ if $2\le d\le n-3$ and $m_G[n-d+1,n]\le n-d+1$ if $1\le d\le n-3$. In this paper, we show that $m_G[n-d,n]\le n-d+2$ if $2\le d\le n-4$, and $m_G[n-2d+4,n]\le n-2$ if $2\le d\le \lfloor\frac{n}{2} \rfloor$.

Interface fluctuations associated with split Fermi seas
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 57 085201 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of a family of unidimensional lattice fermion models, which are in exact correspondence with certain probability laws on partitions and on unitary matrices. These models exhibit limit shapes, and in the case where the bulk of these shapes are described by analytic functions, the fluctuations around their interfaces have been shown to follow a universal Tracy-Widom distribution or its higher-order analogue. Non-differentiable bulk limit shape functions arise when a gap appears in some quantum numbers of the model, in other words when the Fermi sea is split. We show that split Fermi seas give rise to new interface fluctuations, governed by integer powers of universal distributions. This breakdown in universality is analogous to the behaviour of a random Hermitian matrix when the support of its limiting eigenvalue distribution has multiple cuts, with oscillations appearing in the limit of the two-point correlation function. We show that when the Fermi sea is split in the lattice fermion model, there are multiple cuts in the eigenvalue support of the corresponding unitary matrix model.

Spectral measure for uniform $d$-regular digraphs
Consider the matrix $A_{\mathcal{G}}$ chosen uniformly at random from the finite set of all $N$-dimensional matrices of zero main-diagonal and binary entries, having each row and column of $A_{\mathcal{G}}$ sum to $d$. That is, the adjacency matrix for the uniformly random $d$-regular simple digraph $\mathcal{G}$. Fixing $d \ge 3$, it has long been conjectured that as $N \to \infty$ the corresponding empirical eigenvalue distributions converge weakly, in probability, to an explicit non-random limit, %measure $μ_d$ on $\mathbb{C}$, which is given by the Brown measure of the free sum of $d$ Haar unitary operators. We reduce this conjecture to bounding the decay in $N$ of the probability that the minimal singular value of the shifted matrix $A(w) = A_{\mathcal{G}} - w I$ is very small. While the latter remains a challenging task, the required bound is comparable to the recently established control on the singularity of $A_{\mathcal{G}}$. The reduction is achieved here by sharp estimates on the behavior at large $N$, near the real line, of the Green's function (aka resolvent) of the Hermitization of $A(w)$, which is of independent interest.

Laplacian eigenvalue distribution for unicyclic graphs
Let $G$ be a unicyclic graph. In this paper, we provide an upper bound for the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ within the interval $[0,1)$ in terms of the diameter and the girth of $G$.

Laplacain eigenvalue distribution and diameter of graphs
Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices with diameter $d$. It is known that if $2\le d\le n-2$, there are at most $n-d$ Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval $[n-d+2, n]$. In this paper, we show that if $1\le d\le n-3$, there are at most $n-d+1$ Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval $[n-d+1, n]$. Moreover, we try to identify the connected graphs on $n$ vertices with diameter $d$, where $2\le d\le n-3$, such that there are at most $n-d$ Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval $[n-d+1, n]$.

Laplacian eigenvalue distribution, diameter and domination number of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$ with domination number $γ$, Hedetniemi, Jacobs and Trevisan [European Journal of Combinatorics 53 (2016) 66-71] proved that $m_{G}[0,1)\leq γ$, where $m_{G}[0,1)$ means the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ in the interval $[0,1)$. Let $T$ be a tree with diameter $d$. In this paper, we show that $m_{T}[0,1)\geq (d+1)/3$. However, such a lower bound is false for general graphs. All trees achieving the lower bound are completely characterized. Moreover, for a tree $T$, we establish a relation between the Laplacian eigenvalues, the diameter and the domination number by showing that the domination number of $T$ is equal to $(d+1)/3$ if and only if it has exactly $(d+1)/3$ Laplacian eigenvalues less than one. As an application, it also provides a new type of trees, which show the sharpness of an inequality due to Hedetniemi, Jacobs and Trevisan.

SYK model with an extra diagonal perturbation: phase transition in the eigenvalue spectrum
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the SYK model with an extra constant source, i.e. a constant matrix or equivalently a diagonal matrix with only one non-zero entry $λ_1$. By using methods from analytic combinatorics, we find exact expressions for the moments of this model. We further prove that the spectrum of this model can have a gap when $λ_1>λ^c_1$, thus exhibiting a phase transition in $λ_1$. In this case, a single isolated eigenvalue splits off from SYK's eigenvalues distribution. We located this single eigenvalue by analyzing the singular behavior of a supercritical functional composition scheme. In certain limit our results recover the ones of random matrices with non-zero mean entries.

The Asymptotic Infinitesimal Distribution of a Real Wishart Random Matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $X_N$ be a $N \times N$ real Wishart random matrix with aspect ratio $M/N$. The limit eigenvalue distribution of $X_N$ is the Marchenko-Pastur law with parameter $c = \lim_N M/N$. The limit moments $\{m_n\}_n$ are given by $m_n = \sum_π c^{\#(π)}$ where the sum runs over $NC(n)$. Let $m_n'$ be the limit of $N( \mathrm{E}(\mathrm {tr}(X_N^n)) - m_n)$. These are the asymptotic infinitesimal moments of a real Wishart matrix. We show that $m'_n$ can be written as a sum over planar diagrams with two terms, $\sum_π c'(\#(π) -1) c^{\#(π)-1}$, and $\sum_{π\in S_{NC}^δ(n,-n)} c^{\#(π)/2}$, where $S_{NC}^δ(n,-n)$ is a set of non-crossing annular permutations satisfying a symmetry condition. Moreover we present a recursion formula for the second term which is related to one for higher order freeness.

On spectral distribution of sample covariance matrices from large dimensional and large $k$-fold tensor products
Published in Electronic Journal of Probability (2022) 27, 1-18 • View PublicationBIB
We study the eigenvalue distributions for sums of independent rank-one $k$-fold tensor products of large $n$-dimensional vectors. Previous results in the literature assume that $k=o(n)$ and show that the eigenvalue distributions converge to the celebrated Marčenko-Pastur law under appropriate moment conditions on the base vectors. In this paper, motivated by quantum information theory, we study the regime where $k$ grows faster, namely $k=O(n)$. We show that the moment sequences of the eigenvalue distributions have a limit, which is different from the Marčenko-Pastur law. As a byproduct, we show that the Marčenko-Pastur law limit holds if and only if $k=o(n)$ for this tensor model. The approach is based on the method of moments.
Asymptotic spectra of large (grid) graphs with a uniform local structure (part II): numerical applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the current work we are concerned with sequences of graphs having a grid geometry, with a uniform local structure in a bounded domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^d$, $d\ge 1$. When $Ω=[0,1]$, such graphs include the standard Toeplitz graphs and, for $Ω=[0,1]^d$, the considered class includes $d$-level Toeplitz graphs. In the general case, the underlying sequence of adjacency matrices has a canonical eigenvalue distribution, in the Weyl sense, and it has been shown in the theoretical part of this work that we can associate to it a symbol $\boldsymbol{\mathfrak{f}}$. The knowledge of the symbol and of its basic analytical features provides key information on the eigenvalue structure in terms of localization, spectral gap, clustering, and global distribution. In the present paper, many different applications are discussed and various numerical examples are presented in order to underline the practical use of the developed theory. Tests and applications are mainly obtained from the approximation of differential operators via numerical schemes such as Finite Differences (FDs), Finite Elements (FEs), and Isogeometric Analysis (IgA). Moreover, we show that more applications can be taken into account, since the results presented here can be applied as well to study the spectral properties of adjacency matrices and Laplacian operators of general large graphs and networks, whenever the involved matrices enjoy a uniform local structure.

Classification of graphs by Laplacian eigenvalue distribution and independence number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $m_GI$ denote the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of a graph $G$ in an interval $I$ and let $α(G)$ denote the independence number of $G$. In this paper, we determine the classes of graphs that satisfy the condition $m_G[0,n-α(G)]=α(G)$ when $α(G)= 2$ and $α(G)= n-2$, where $n$ is the order of $G$. When $α(G)=2$, $G \cong K_1 \nabla K_{n-m} \nabla K_{m-1}$ for some $m \geq 2$. When $α(G)=n-2$, there are two types of graphs $B(p,q,r)$ and $B'(p,q,r)$ of order $n=p+q+r+2$, which we call the binary star graphs. Also, we show that the binary star graphs with $p=r$ are determined by their Laplacian spectra.

The Eigenvalue Distribution of the Watt-Strogatz Random Graph
This paper studies the eigenvalue distribution of the Watts-Strogatz random graph, which is known as the "small-world" random graph. The construction of the small-world random graph starts with a regular ring lattice of n vertices; each has exactly k neighbors with equally k/2 edges on each side. With probability p, each downside neighbor of a particular vertex will rewire independently to a random vertex on the graph without allowing for self-loops or duplication. The rewiring process starts at the first adjacent neighbor of vertex 1 and continues in an orderly fashion to the farthest downside neighbor of vertex n. Each edge must be considered once. This paper focuses on the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix A_n, used to represent the small-world random graph. We compute the first moment, second moment, and prove the limiting third moment as n goes to infinity of the eigenvalue distribution.

Large Deviation Principles via Spherical Integrals
Published in Prob. Math. Phys. 3 (2022) 543-625 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we develop a framework to study the large deviation principle for matrix models and their quantized versions, by tilting the measures using the limits of spherical integrals obtained in [46,47]. As examples, we obtain 1. a large deviation principle for the empirical distribution of the diagonal entries of $UB_NU^*$, for a sequence of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $B_N$ and unitary Haar distributed matrices $U$; 2. a large deviation upper bound for the empirical eigenvalue distribution of $A_N+UB_NU^*$, for two sequences of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $A_N, B_N$, and their complementary lower bounds at measures which are described by the free product with amalgamation; 3. a large deviation principle for the Kostka number $K_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbolη_N}$, for two sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbolη_N$ with at most $N$ rows; 4. a large deviation upper bound for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbol η_N}^{\boldsymbol κ_N}$, for three sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbol η_N, \boldsymbol κ_N$ with at most $N$ rows, and their complementary lower bounds at nice measures.
The Limiting Eigenvalue Distribution of Iterated k-Regular Graph Cylinders
We explore the limiting empirical eigenvalue distributions arising from matrices of the form \[A_{n+1} = \begin{bmatrix} A_n & I\\ I & A_n \end{bmatrix} , \]where $A_0$ is the adjacency matrix of a $k$-regular graph. We find that for bipartite graphs, the distributions are centered symmetric binomial distributions, and for non-bipartite graphs, the distributions are asymmetric. This research grew out of our work on neural networks in $k$-regular graphs. Our original question was whether or not the graph cylinder construction would produce an expander graph that is a suitable candidate for the neural networks being developed at Nousot. This question is answered in the negative for our computational purposes. However, the limiting distribution is still of theoretical interest to us; thus, we present our results here.

A central limit theorem for star-generators of $S_{\infty}$, which relates to the law of a GUE matrix
Published in Journal of Theoretical Probability 34 (2021), 1248-1278 • Search Publication
It is well-known that, on a purely algebraic level, a simplified algebraic version of the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) can be proved in the framework of a noncommutative probability space, under the hypotheses that the sequence of non-commutative random variables we consider is exchangeable and obeys a certain vanishing condition of some of its joint moments. In this approach (which covers versions for both the classical CLT and the CLT of free probability), the determination of the resulting limit law has to be addressed on a case-by-case basis. In this paper we discuss an instance of the above theorem which takes place in the framework of the group algebra of the infinite symmetric group $S_{\infty}$: the exchangeable sequence that is considered consists of the star-generators of $S_{\infty}$, and the expectation functional used on the group algebra of $S_{\infty}$ depends in a natural way on a parameter $d$, which is a positive integer. We identify precisely the limit distribution $μ_d$ for this special instance of exchangeable CLT, via a connection that $μ_d$ turns out to have with the average empirical eigenvalue distribution of a random GUE matrix of size $d \times d$. Moreover, we put into evidence a multi-variate version of this result which follows from the observation that, on the level of calculations with pair-partitions, the (non-centred) star-generators are related to a (centred) exchangeable sequence of GUE matrices with independent entries
On the distribution of the eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity
Published in Classical and Quantum Gravity, 35 (2018) 065008 • View PublicationBIB
We study the distribution of the eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity concentrating on the part of the spectrum relevant for isolated horizons. We first show that the approximations relying on integer partitions are not sufficient to obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalue distribution for large areas. We then develop a method, based on Laplace transforms, that provides a very accurate solution to this problem. The representation that we get is valid for any area and can be used to obtain its asymptotics in the large area limit.
Laplacian Distribution and Domination

Let $m_G(I)$ denote the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of a graph $G$ in an interval $I$, and let $γ(G)$ denote its domination number. We extend the recent result $m_G[0,1) \leq γ(G)$, and show that isolate-free graphs also satisfy $γ(G) \leq m_G[2,n]$. In pursuit of better understanding Laplacian eigenvalue distribution, we find applications for these inequalities. We relate these spectral parameters with the approximability of $γ(G)$, showing that $\frac{γ(G)}{m_G[0,1)} \not\in O(\log n)$. However, $γ(G) \leq m_G[2, n] \leq (c + 1) γ(G)$ for $c$-cyclic graphs, $c \geq 1$. For trees $T$, $γ(T) \leq m_T[2, n] \leq 2 γ(G)$.
