Proving a conjecture concerning chromatic number, size and least eigenvalue
Let $G$ be a simple nonempty graph with size $m$, chromatic number $χ$, and least eigenvalue $λ$. We prove that \[ χ(χ-1) \le (m+1-λ^2)+\sqrt{(m+1-λ^2)^2-4(λ^2-1)(λ^2-m)} \] with equality if and only if $G$ is either a complete graph or a complete bipartite graph, with possibly isolated vertices. The inequality was conjectured recently by Tang and Elphick in [Electron. J. Combin. 33 (2026), \#P2.65].
The maximum index and spectral radius of unbalanced signed multipartite graphs
Let $Γ=(G,σ)$ be a signed graph, where $G$ is the underlying graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$ such that $σ: E(G)\to \{-1,1\}$ is the sign function. For $U\subset V(G)$, the operation that changes the sign of all edges between $U$ and $V(G)\setminus U$ is called switching. Two signed graphs with the same underlying graph are switching equivalent if one is obtainable from the other one by switching a subset. Two signed graphs are switching isomorphic if one is isomorphic to a switching equivalent signed graph of the other one. A signed cycle is called negative if it contains an odd number of negative edges. A signed graph is balanced if none of its cycles is negative; otherwise it is unbalanced. The adjacency matrix $A(Γ)$ of $Γ$ is obtained from the standard $(0,1)$-adjacency matrix of $G$ by reversing the sign of all $1$s which correspond to negative edges. The index of $Γ$ is the largest eigenvalue of $A(Γ)$ and the spectral radius of $Γ$ is the largest absolute value of the eigenvalue of $A(Γ)$. The least eigenvalue of $Γ$ is the least eigenvalue of $A(Γ)$. We study the extremal problems of the index and the spectral radius among unbalanced signed multipartite graphs. More precisely, we determine the unbalanced signed $t$-partite graphs with fixed $t\ge 2$ and partite sizes (order, respectively) that maximizes the index and the spectral radius respectively, up to switching isomorphism. To determine the unbalanced signed multipartite graphs with fixed partite sizes (order, respectively) with maximum spectral radius, we also determine those with minimum least eigenvalue.
The number of cycles of a given length in dense hamiltonian graphs: proving Hilton's conjecture
A classical theorem of Sheehan in 1977 states that every hamiltonian graph $G$ of order $n$ satisfying $e(G)>\left\lfloor \frac{n^2}{4}\right\rfloor+1$ contains at least two cycles of every length $\ell$, $3\le \ell\le n$. In the same paper, Sheehan recorded a conjecture of Hilton, which strengthens this conclusion by asserting that such a graph contains at least $n-\ell+2$ cycles of length $\ell$ for each $3\le \ell\le n$. We prove Hilton's conjecture for all hamiltonian graphs of order at least $440$.
On $k$-connected vertex-pancyclic graphs without pancyclic edges
An edge of a graph of order $n$ is pancyclic if it lies in a cycle of every length $3,\ldots,n$. A graph of order $n$ is vertex-pancyclic if every vertex lies in a cycle of every length $3,\ldots,n$. Recently, Li and Zhan proved that every $2$-connected $[4,2]$-graph of order at least seven contains a pancyclic edge. Zhan asked whether there exists a positive integer $k$ such that every $k$-connected vertex-pancyclic graph contains a pancyclic edge. We answer this question by showing that for every positive integer $k$, there is a $k$-connected vertex-pancyclic graph containing no pancyclic edge.
Signless Laplacian index conditions for trebly chorded cycles in graphs with given order
It is proved that for a graph of order $n$, where $n\ge 6$, if the signless Laplacian index is larger than or equal to certain value depending on $n$, then the graph contains a trebly chorded cycle, where the chords incident to a common vertex, unless it is one of two specified graphs.
Unbalanced signed bipartite graphs containing no negative $C_4$ with maximum spectral radius
A signed graph $(G,σ)$ is a graph $G$ together with an assignment $σ$ of either a positive sign or a negative sign to each edge. A signed graph is unbalanced if it contains a cycle with odd number of negative edges. The spectral radius of a signed graph is the spectral radius of its adjacency matrix, in which for vertices $u,v$, the $(u,v)$-entry is $0$, $-1$, or $1$ depending on whether $uv$ represents no edge, a negative edge, or a positive edge, respectively. Recently, Conde, Dratman and Grippo [Discrete Math. 349 (2026) 114942] proved that there is only one unbalanced signed bipartite graph with maximum spectral radius, up to switching isomorphism. In this paper, we establish a spectral Turán type results for signed bipartite graphs. More precisely, we determine the unique graphs containing no negative cycles of length four with maximum spectral radius, up to switching isomorphism, among unbalanced signed bipartite graphs with fixed bipartite sizes and order, respectively.
Tight spectral conditions for the Hamiltonicity of $K_{1,r}$-free split graphs
The Hamiltonicity and related subjects of split graphs, and in particular $K_{1,r}$-free split graphs with $r\ge 3$ received much attention. Dai et al. [Discrete Math. 345 (2022) 112826] conjectured that every $(r-1)$-connected $K_{1,r}$-free split graph is Hamiltonian. They proved the case when $r=4$, and earlier Renjith and Sadagopan [Int. J. Found. Comput. Sci. 33 (2022) 1--32] proved the case when $r=3$. Recently, Liu, Song, Zhang and Lai [Discrete Math. 346 (2023) 113402] proved that a split graph is Hamiltonian if and only if it is fully cycle extendable. So for $r=3,4$ every $(r-1)$-connected $K_{1,r}$-free split graph is fully cycle extendable. We give tight spectral sufficient conditions for a $K_{1,r}$-free split graph to be Hamiltonian for $r=3,4$.
Extremal $Q$-index problem in outerplanar graphs
Outerplanar Turán problem has received considerable attention recently. We study the spectral version via $Q$-index. We determine the unique graph that maximizes the $Q$-index among all $n$-vertex connected outerplanar graphs which are respectively forbidden to contain: (i) a fixed cycle; and (ii) the disjoint union of paths of a given order.
Signless Laplacian index conditions for doubly chorded cycles in graphs with given order
In this paper, we show that for a graph of order $n$, where $n\ge 5$, if the signless Laplacian index is larger than or equal to certain value depending on $n$, then the graph contains a doubly chorded cycle, where the chords incident to a common vertex, unless it is two specified graphs.
Girth and Laplacian eigenvalue distribution
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ with girth $g$. For $k=1,\dots,\min\{g-1, n-g\}$, let $n(G,k)$ be the number of Laplacian eigenvalues (counting multiplicities) of $G$ that fall inside the interval $[n-g-k+4,n]$. We prove that if $g\ge 4$, then \[ n(G,k)\le n-g. \] Those graphs achieving the bound for $k=1,2$ are determined. We also determine the graphs $G$ with $g=3$ such that $n(G,k)=n-1, n-2, n-3$.
Ordinary and spectral extremal problems on vertex disjoint copies of even fans
Let $\mathrm{ex}(n, F)$ and $\mathrm{spex}(n, F)$ be the maximum size and spectral radius among all $F$-free graphs with fixed order $n$, respectively. A fan is a graph $P_1\vee P_{s}$ (join of a vertex and a path of order $s$) for $s\ge 3$, and it is called an even fan if $s$ is even. In this paper, we study $\mathrm{ex}(n,t(P_1\vee P_{2k}))$, $\mathrm{spex}(n,t(P_1\vee P_{2k}))$ with $t\ge 1$ and $k\ge 3$ and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs for sufficiently large $n$.
Eigenvalue conditions implying edge-disjoint spanning trees and a forest with constraints
Let $G$ be a nontrivial graph with minimum degree $δ$ and $k$ an integer with $k\ge 2$. In the literature, there are eigenvalue conditions that imply $G$ contains $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees. We give eigenvalue conditions that imply $G$ contains $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees and another forest $F$ with $|E(F)|>\frac{δ-1}δ(|V(G)|-1)$, and if $F$ is not a spanning tree, then $F$ has a component with at least $δ$ edges.
Extremal distance spectral radius of graphs with fixed size
Let $m$ be a positive integer. Brualdi and Hoffman proposed the problem to determine the (connected) graphs with maximum spectral radius in a given graph class and they posed a conjecture for the class of graphs with given size $m$. After partial results due to Friedland and Stanley, Rowlinson completely confirmed the conjecture. The distance spectral radius of a connected graph is the largest eigenvalue of its distance matrix. We investigate the problem to determine the connected graphs with minimum distance spectral radius in the class of graphs with size $m$. Given $m$, there is exactly one positive integer $n$ such that ${n-1\choose 2} <m\leq {n\choose 2}$. We establish some structural properties of the extremal graphs for all $m$ and solve the problem for ${n-1\choose 2}+\max\{\frac{n-6}{2},1\}\le m\leq {n\choose 2}$. We give a conjecture for the remaining case. To prove the main results, we also determine the the complements of forests of fixed order with large and small distance spectral radius.
The spectral radius of unbalanced signed graphs without negative $C_3$ or $C_4$
A signed graph is a graph in which every edge carries a $+$ or a $-$ sign. In this paper, we determine the signed graphs with maximum spectral radius among all unbalanced signed graphs with fixed order that contain neither negative three-cycles nor negative four-cycles.
Spectral conditions implying the existence of doubly chorded cycles without or with constraints
What spectral conditions imply a graph contains a chorded cycle? This question was asked by R.J. Gould in 2022. We answer two modified versions of Gould's question by giving tight spectral conditions that imply the existence of doubly chorded cycle, and a doubly chorded cycle with two chords incident to a vertex, respectively.
Spectral conditions for the existence of chorded cycles in graphs with fixed size
A chorded cycle is a cycle with at least one chord. Gould asked in [Graphs Comb. 38 (2022) 189] the question: What spectral conditions imply a graph contains a chorded cycle? For a graph with fixed size, extremal spectral conditions are given to ensure that a graph contains a chorded cycle and a $(2k-3)$-chorded $(2k+1)$-cycle for $k\ge 2$, respectively, via spectral radius.
Spectral conditions for graphs in which every edge belongs to a factor
A factor of a graph is a spanning subgraph. Spectral sufficient conditions are provided via spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius for graphs with (i) a matching of given size (particularly, $1$-factor) containing any given edge, and (ii) a star factor with a component isomorphic to stars of order two or three containing any given edge, respectively.
Diameter vs Laplacian eigenvalue distribution
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. It is known that any Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$ belongs to the interval $[0,n]$. For an interval $I\subseteq [0, n]$, denote by $m_GI$ the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ in $I$, counted with multiplicity. When $G$ is connected, known results on the Laplacian eigenvalue distribution related to the diameter $d$ of $G$ include: $m_G[n-d+2,n]\le n-d$ if $2\le d\le n-3$ and $m_G[n-d+1,n]\le n-d+1$ if $1\le d\le n-3$. In this paper, we show that $m_G[n-d,n]\le n-d+2$ if $2\le d\le n-4$, and $m_G[n-2d+4,n]\le n-2$ if $2\le d\le \lfloor\frac{n}{2} \rfloor$.
Spectral conditions for factor-criticality of graphs
A graph $G$ is $k$-factor-critical if $G-S$ has a perfect matching for any $k$-subset $S$ of the vertex set of $G$. In this paper, we investigate the factor-criticality of graphs with fixed minimum degree and provide sufficient conditions for such graphs to be $k$-factor-critical in terms of spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius.
