Distribution of signless Laplacian eigenvalues and graph invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simple graph on $n$ vertices, any of its signless Laplacian eigenvalues is in the interval $[0, 2n-2]$. In this paper, we give relationships between the number of signless Laplacian eigenvalues in specific intervals in $[0, 2n-2]$ and graph invariants including matching number and diameter.

Toughness and existence of $2$-factors
A graph is $t$-tough if the deletion of any set of, say, $m$ vertices from the graph leaves a graph with at most $\frac{m}{t}$ components. In 1973, Chvátal suggested the problem of relating toughness to factors in graphs. In 1985, Enomoto et al. showed that each $2$-tough graph with at least three vertices has a $2$-factor, but for any $ε>0$, there exists a $(2-ε)$-tough graph on at least $3$ vertices having no $2$-factor. In recent years, the study of sufficient conditions for graphs with toughness less than $2$ having a $2$-factor has received a paramount interest. In this paper, we give new tight sufficient conditions for a $t$-tough graph having a $2$-factor when $1\le t<2$ by involving independence number, minimum degree, connectivity and forbidden forests.

The Alon-Tarsi number of $K_{3,3}$-minor-free graphs
The well known Wagner's theorem states that a graph is a planar graph if and only if it is $K_5$-minor-free and $K_{3,3}$-minor-free. Denote by $AT(G)$ the Alon-Tarsi number of a graph $G$. We show that for any $K_{3,3}$-minor-free graph $G$, $AT(G)\le 5$, there exists a matching $M$ and a forest $F$ such that $AT(G-M)\le 4$ and $AT(G-E(F))\le 3$, extending the result on the Alon-Tarsi number of $K_5$-minor-free graphs due to Abe, Kim and Ozeki.

Maximum values of the edge Mostar index in tricyclic graphs
For a graph $G$, the edge Mostar index of $G$ is the sum of $|m_u(e|G)-m_v(e|G)|$ over all edges $e=uv$ of $G$, where $m_u(e|G)$ denotes the number of edges of $G$ that have a smaller distance in $G$ to $u$ than to $v$, and analogously for $m_v(e|G)$. This paper mainly studies the problem of determining the graphs that maximize the edge Mostar index among tricyclic graphs. To be specific, we determine a sharp upper bound for the edge Mostar index on tricyclic graphs and identify the graphs that attain the bound.

A graph for which the second largest distance eigenvalue is less than $\frac{-3+\sqrt{5}}{2}$ is chordal
Let $G$ be a connected graph with vertex set $V(G)$. The distance, $d_G(u,v)$, between vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is defined as the length of a shortest path between $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The distance matrix of $G$ is the matrix $D(G)=(d_G(u,v))_{u,v\in V(G)}$. The second largest distance eigenvalue of $G$ is the second largest one in the spectrum of $D(G)$. We show that any connected graph with the second largest distance eigenvalue less than $\frac{-3+\sqrt{5}}{2}$ is chordal, and characterize those bicyclic graphs and split graphs with the second largest distance eigenvalue less than $-\frac{1}{2}$.

Laplacain eigenvalue distribution and diameter of graphs
Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices with diameter $d$. It is known that if $2\le d\le n-2$, there are at most $n-d$ Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval $[n-d+2, n]$. In this paper, we show that if $1\le d\le n-3$, there are at most $n-d+1$ Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval $[n-d+1, n]$. Moreover, we try to identify the connected graphs on $n$ vertices with diameter $d$, where $2\le d\le n-3$, such that there are at most $n-d$ Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval $[n-d+1, n]$.

Disproof of a conjecture on the edge Mostar index
For a given connected graph $G$, the edge Mostar index $Mo_e(G)$ is defined as $Mo_e(G)=\sum_{e=uv \in E(G)}|m_u(e|G) - m_v(e|G)|$, where $m_u(e|G)$ and $m_v(e|G)$ are respectively, the number of edges of $G$ lying closer to vertex $u$ than to vertex $v$ and the number of edges of $G$ lying closer to vertex $v$ than to vertex $u$. We determine a sharp upper bound for the edge Mostar index on bicyclic graphs and identify the graphs that attain the bound, which disproves a conjecture proposed by Liu et al. [Iranian J. Math. Chem. 11(2) (2020) 95--106].

On the $α$-spectral radius of hypergraphs
For real $α\in [0,1)$ and a hypergraph $G$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of the matrix $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$, where $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$, which is a symmetric matrix with zero diagonal such that for distinct vertices $u,v$ of $G$, the $(u,v)$-entry of $A(G)$ is exactly the number of edges containing both $u$ and $v$, and $D(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of row sums of $A(G)$. We study the $α$-spectral radius of a hypergraph that is uniform or not necessarily uniform. We propose some local grafting operations that increase or decrease the $α$-spectral radius of a hypergraph. We determine the unique hypergraphs with maximum $α$-spectral radius among $k$-uniform hypertrees, among $k$-uniform unicyclic hypergraphs, and among $k$-uniform hypergraphs with fixed number of pendant edges. We also determine the unique hypertrees with maximum $α$-spectral radius among hypertrees with given number of vertices and edges, the unique hypertrees with the first three largest (two smallest, respectively) $α$-spectral radii among hypertrees with given number of vertices, the unique hypertrees with minimum $α$-spectral radius among the hypertrees that are not $2$-uniform, the unique hypergraphs with the first two largest (smallest, respectively) $α$-spectral radii among unicyclic hypergraphs with given number of vertices, and the unique hypergraphs with maximum $α$-spectral radius among hypergraphs with fixed number of pendant edges.

On ABC spectral radius of uniform hypergraphs
Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with vertex set $[n]$ and edge set $E(G)$, the ABC tensor $\mathcal{ABC}(G)$ of $G$ is the $k$-order $n$-dimensional tensor with \[ \mathcal{ABC}(G)_{i_1, \dots, i_k}= \begin{cases} \dfrac{1}{(k-1)!}\sqrt[k]{\dfrac{\sum_{i\in e}d_{i}-k}{\prod_{i\in e}d_{i}}} & \mbox{if $e\in E(G)$} 0 & \mbox{otherwise} \end{cases} \] for $i_j\in [n]$ with $j\in [k]$, where $d_i$ is the degree of vertex $i$ in $G$. The ABC spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph is the spectral radius of its ABC tensor. We give tight lower and upper bounds for the ABC spectra radius, and determine the maximum ABC spectral radii of uniform hypertrees, uniform non-hyperstar hypertrees and uniform non-power hypertrees of given size, as well as the maximum ABC spectral radii of unicyclic uniform hypergraphs and linear unicyclic uniform hypergraphs of given size, respectively. We also characterize those uniform hypergraphs for which the maxima for the ABC spectral radii are actually attained in all cases.

The generalized $4$-connectivity of bubble-sort graphs
For $S\subseteq V(G)$ with $|S|\ge 2$, let $κ_G (S)$ denote the maximum number of internally disjoint trees connecting $S$ in $G$. For $2\le k\le n$, the generalized $k$-connectivity $κ_k(G)$ of an $n$-vertex connected graph $G$ is defined to be $κ_k(G)=\min \{κ_G(S): S\in V(G) \mbox{ and } |S|=k\}$. The generalized $k$-connectivity can serve for measuring the fault tolerance of an interconnection network. The bubble-sort graph $B_n$ for $n\ge 2$ is a Cayley graph over the symmetric group of permutations on $[n]$ generated by transpositions from the set $\{[1,2],[2,3],\dots, [n-1,n]\}$. In this paper, we show that for the bubble-sort graphs $B_n$ with $n\ge 3$, $κ_4(B_n)=n-2$.

Proof of a conjecture on distribution of Laplacian eigenvalues and diameter, and beyond
Ahanjideh, Akbari, Fakharan and Trevisan proposed a conjecture in [Linear Algebra Appl. 632 (2022) 1--14] on the distribution of the Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs: for any connected graph of order $n$ with diameter $d\ge 2$ that is not a path, the number of Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval $[n-d+2,n]$ is at most $n-d$. We show that the conjecture is true, and give a complete characterization of graphs for which the conjectured bound is attained. This establishes an interesting relation between the spectral and classical parameters.

Hamiltonicity of $1$-tough $(P_2\cup kP_1)$-free graphs
Given a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-free if $G$ does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. For a positive real number $t$, a non-complete graph $G$ is said to be $t$-tough if for every vertex cut $S$ of $G$, the ratio of $|S|$ to the number of components of $G-S$ is at least $t$. A complete graph is said to be $t$-tough for any $t>0$. Chvátal's toughness conjecture, stating that there exists a constant $t_0$ such that every $t_0$-tough graph with at least three vertices is Hamiltonian, is still open in general. Chvátal and Erdös \cite{CE} proved that, for any integer $k\ge 1$, every $\max\{2,k\}$-connected $(k+1)P_1$-free graph on at least three vertices is Hamiltonian. Along the Chvátal-Erdös theorem, Shi and Shan \cite{SS} proved that, for any integer $k\ge 4$, every $4$-tough $2k$-connected $(P_2\cup kP_1)$-free graph with at least three vertices is Hamiltonian, and furthermore, they proposed a conjecture that for any integer $k\ge 1$, any $1$-tough $2k$-connected $(P_2\cup kP_1)$-free graph is Hamiltonian. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture, and furthermore, we show that if $k\ge 3$, then the condition `$2k$-connected' may be weakened to be `$2(k-1)$-connected'. As an immediate consequence, for any integer $k\ge 3$, every $(k-1)$-tough $(P_2\cup kP_1)$-free graph is Hamiltonian. This improves the result of Hatfield and Grimm \cite{HG}, stating that every $3$-tough $(P_2\cup 3P_1)$-free graph is Hamiltonian.

A proof of a conjecture on the distance spectral radius
A cactus is a connected graph in which any two cycles have at most one common vertex. We determine the unique graph that maximizes the distance spectral radius over all cacti with fixed numbers of vertices and cycles, and thus prove a conjecture on the distance spectral radius of cacti in [S.S. Bose, M. Nath, S. Paul, On the distance spectral radius of cacti, Linear Algebra Appl. 437 (2012) 2128--2141]. We prove the result in the context of hypertrees.

Minimum status, matching and domination of graphs

The minimum status of a graph is the minimum of statuses of all vertices of this graph. We give a sharp upper bound for the minimum status of a connected graph with fixed order and matching number (domination number, respectively), and characterize the unique trees achieving the bound. We also determine the unique tree such that its minimum status is as small as possible when order and matching number (domination number, respectively) are fixed.

Published • View PublicationBIB
For $0\leα<1$ and a uniform hypergraph $G$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest $H$-eigenvalue of $α\mathcal{D}(G) +(1-α)\mathcal{A}(G)$, where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $\mathcal{A}(G)$ are the diagonal tensor of degrees and the adjacency tensor of $G$, respectively. We give upper bounds for the $α$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph, propose some transformations that increase the $α$-spectral radius, and determine the unique hypergraphs with maximum $α$-spectral radius in some classes of uniform hypergraphs.

On the $α$-spectral radius of graphs
For $0\le α\le 1$, Nikiforov proposed to study the spectral properties of the family of matrices $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$ of a graph $G$, where $D(G)$ is the degree diagonal matrix and $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix. The $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of $A_α(G)$. We give upper bounds for $α$-spectral radius for unicyclic graphs $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\ge 2$, connected irregular graphs with given maximum degree and and some other graph parameters, and graphs with given domination number, respectively. We determine the unique tree with second maximum $α$-spectral radius among trees, and the unique tree with maximum $α$-spectral radius among trees with given diameter. For a graph with two pendant paths at a vertex or at two adjacent vertex, we prove results concerning the behavior of the $α$-spectral radius under relocation of a pendant edge in a pendant path. We also determine the unique graphs such that the difference between the maximum degree and the $α$-spectral radius is maximum among trees, unicyclic graphs and non-bipartite graphs, respectively.

The distance Laplacian spectral radius of unicyclic graphs
For a connected graph $G$, the distance Laplacian spectral radius of $G$ is the spectral radius of its distance Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{L}(G)$ defined as $\mathcal{L}(G)=Tr(G)-D(G)$, where $Tr(G)$ is a diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions of $G$ and $D(G)$ is the distance matrix of $G$. In this paper, we determine the unique graphs with maximum distance Laplacian spectral radius among unicyclic graphs.
