Hamiltonian paths in the permutation digraphs $P(n,n-2)$
For $1\leq k<n$, let $P(n,k)$ be the directed overlap graph whose vertices are the $k$-permutations of $[n]$ and whose arcs are the $(k+1)$-permutations. Isaak proved that $P(n,n-2)$ has no directed Hamiltonian cycle for $n\geq4$ and asked whether it nevertheless has a directed Hamiltonian path. We answer this question affirmatively by showing that $P(n,n-2)$ has a Hamiltonian path.
Robust Contraction Decomposition for Minor-Free Graphs and its Applications
We prove a robust contraction decomposition theorem for $H$-minor-free graphs, which states that given an $H$-minor-free graph $G$ and an integer $p$, one can partition in polynomial time the vertices of $G$ into $p$ sets $Z_1,\dots,Z_p$ such that $\operatorname{tw}(G/(Z_i \setminus Z')) = O(p + |Z'|)$ for all $i \in [p]$ and $Z' \subseteq Z_i$. Here, $\operatorname{tw}(\cdot)$ denotes the treewidth of a graph and $G/(Z_i \setminus Z')$ denotes the graph obtained from $G$ by contracting all edges with both endpoints in $Z_i \setminus Z'$. Our result generalizes earlier results by Klein [SICOMP 2008] and Demaine et al. [STOC 2011] based on partitioning $E(G)$, and some recent theorems for planar graphs by Marx et al. [SODA 2022], for bounded-genus graphs (more generally, almost-embeddable graphs) by Bandyapadhyay et al. [SODA 2022], and for unit-disk graphs by Bandyapadhyay et al. [SoCG 2022]. The robust contraction decomposition theorem directly results in parameterized algorithms with running time $2^{\widetilde{O}(\sqrt{k})} \cdot n^{O(1)}$ or $n^{O(\sqrt{k})}$ for every vertex/edge deletion problems on $H$-minor-free graphs that can be formulated as Permutation CSP Deletion or 2-Conn Permutation CSP Deletion. Consequently, we obtain the first subexponential-time parameterized algorithms for Subset Feedback Vertex Set, Subset Odd Cycle Transversal, Subset Group Feedback Vertex Set, 2-Conn Component Order Connectivity on $H$-minor-free graphs. For other problems which already have subexponential-time parameterized algorithms on $H$-minor-free graphs (e.g., Odd Cycle Transversal, Vertex Multiway Cut, Vertex Multicut, etc.), our theorem gives much simpler algorithms of the same running time.

Maxima of the $Q$-index of non-bipartite graphs: forbidden short odd cycles
Let $G$ be a non-bipartite graph which does not contain any odd cycle of length at most $2k+1$. In this paper, we determine the maximum $Q$-index of $G$ if its order is fixed, and the corresponding extremal graph is uniquely characterized. Moreover, if the size of $G$ is given, the maximum $Q$-index of $G$ and the unique extremal graph are also proved.

Laplacian eigenvalue distribution, diameter and domination number of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$ with domination number $γ$, Hedetniemi, Jacobs and Trevisan [European Journal of Combinatorics 53 (2016) 66-71] proved that $m_{G}[0,1)\leq γ$, where $m_{G}[0,1)$ means the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ in the interval $[0,1)$. Let $T$ be a tree with diameter $d$. In this paper, we show that $m_{T}[0,1)\geq (d+1)/3$. However, such a lower bound is false for general graphs. All trees achieving the lower bound are completely characterized. Moreover, for a tree $T$, we establish a relation between the Laplacian eigenvalues, the diameter and the domination number by showing that the domination number of $T$ is equal to $(d+1)/3$ if and only if it has exactly $(d+1)/3$ Laplacian eigenvalues less than one. As an application, it also provides a new type of trees, which show the sharpness of an inequality due to Hedetniemi, Jacobs and Trevisan.

Cubic bipartite graphs with minimum spectral gap
The difference between the two largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph $G$ is called the spectral gap of $G.$ If $G$ is a regular graph, then its spectral gap is equal to algebraic connectivity. Abdi, Ghorbani and Imrich, in [European J. Combin. 95 (2021) 103328], showed that the minimum algebraic connectivity of cubic connected graphs on $2n$ vertices is $(1+o(1))\frac{π^{2}}{2n^{2}}$, which is attained on non-bipartite graphs. Motivated by the above result, we in this paper investigate the algebraic connectivity of cubic bipartite graphs. We prove that the minimum algebraic connectivity of cubic bipartite graphs on $2n$ vertices is $(1+o(1))\frac{π^{2}}{n^{2}}$. Moreover, the unique cubic bipartite graph with minimum algebraic connectivity is completed characterized. Based on the relation between the algebraic connectivity and spectral gap of regular graphs, the cubic bipartite graph with minimum spectral gap and the corresponding asymptotic value are also presented. In [J. Graph Theory 99 (2022) 671--690], Horak and Kim established a sharp upper bound for the number of perfect matchings in terms of the Fibonacci number. We obtain a spectral characterization for the extremal graphs by showing that a cubic bipartite graph has the maximum number of perfect matchings if and only if it minimizes the algebraic connectivity.

Maxima of spectral radius of irregular graphs with given maximum degree
Let $λ^{*}$ be the maximum spectral radius of connected irregular graphs on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $Δ$. Liu, Shen and Wang (2007) conjectured that $\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}(n^{2}(Δ-λ^{*}))/(Δ-1)=π^{2},$ which describes the asymptotic behavior for the maximum spectral radius of irregular graphs. Focusing on this conjecture, we consider the maximum spectral radius of connected subcubic bipartite graphs. The unique connected subcubic bipartite graph with the maximum spectral radius is determined. Let $G$ be a $k$-connected irregular graph with spectral radius $λ_{1}(G)$, we present a lower bound for $Δ-λ_{1}(G)$. Moreover, if $H$ is a proper subgraph of a $k$-connected $Δ$-regular graph, a lower bound for $Δ-λ_{1}(H)$ is also obtained. These bounds improve some previous results.

Maxima of the $Q$-index of non-bipartite $C_{3}$-free graphs

A classic result in extremal graph theory, known as Mantel's theorem, states that every non-bipartite graph of order $n$ with size $m>\lfloor \frac{n^{2}}{4}\rfloor$ contains a triangle. Lin, Ning and Wu [Comb. Probab. Comput. 30 (2021) 258-270] proved a spectral version of Mantel's theorem for given order $n.$ Zhai and Shu [Discrete Math. 345 (2022) 112630] investigated a spectral version for fixed size $m.$ In this paper, we prove $Q$-spectral versions of Mantel's theorem.

The maximum spectral radius of irregular bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A bipartite graph is subcubic if it is an irregular bipartite graph with maximum degree three. In this paper, we prove that the asymptotic value of maximum spectral radius over subcubic bipartite graphs of order $n$ is $3-\varTheta(\frac{π^{2}}{n^{2}})$. Our key approach is taking full advantage of the eigenvalues of certain tridiagonal matrices, due to Willms [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 30 (2008) 639--656]. Moreover, for large maximum degree, i.e., the maximum degree is at least $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$, we characterize irregular bipartite graphs with maximum spectral radius. For general maximum degree, we present an upper bound on the spectral radius of irregular bipartite graphs in terms of the order and maximum degree.

Enumerations of Universal Cycles for $k$-Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Universal cycle for $k$-permutations is a cyclic arrangement in which each $k$-permutation appears exactly once as $k$ consecutive elements. Enumeration problem of universal cycles for $k$-permutations is discussed and one new enumerating method is proposed in this paper. Accurate enumerating formulae are provided when $k=2,3$.

A spectral extremal problem on graphs with given size and matching number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Brualdi and Hoffman (1985) proposed the problem of determining the maximal spectral radius of graphs with given size. In this paper, we consider the Brualdi-Hoffman type problem of graphs with given matching number. The maximal $Q$-spectral radius of graphs with given size and matching number is obtained, and the corresponding extremal graphs are also determined.

Fractional matching number and spectral radius of nonnegative matrix of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A fractional matching of a graph $G$ is a function $f:E(G) \to [0,1]$ such that for any $v\in V(G)$, $\sum_{e\in E_G(v)}f(e)\leq 1$ where $E_G(v) = \{e \in E(G): e$ is incident with $v$ in $G\}$. The fractional matching number of $G$ is $μ_{f}(G) = \max\{\sum_{e\in E(G)} f(e): f$ is fractional matching of $G\}$. For any real numbers $a \ge 0$ and $k \in (0, n)$, it is observed that if $n = |V(G)|$ and $δ(G) > \frac{n-k}{2}$, then $μ_{f}(G)>\frac{n-k}{2}$. We determine a function $\varphi(a, n,δ, k)$ and show that for a connected graph $G$ with $n = |V(G)|$, $δ(G) \leq\frac{n-k}{2}$, spectral radius $λ_1(G)$ and complement $\overline{G}$, each of the following holds. (i) If $λ_{1}(aD(G)+A(G))<\varphi(a, n, δ, k),$ then $μ_{f}(G)>\frac{n-k}{2}.$ (ii) If $λ_{1}(aD(\overline{G})+A(\overline{G}))<(a+1)(δ+k-1),$ then $μ_{f}(G)>\frac{n-k}{2}.$ As corollaries, sufficient spectral condition for fractional perfect matchings and analogous results involving $Q$-index and $A_α$-spectral radius are obtained, and former spectral results in [European J. Combin. 55 (2016) 144-148] are extended.

A note on the $A_α$-spectral radius of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For any real $α\in [0,1]$, Nikiforov [Merging the $A$- and $Q$-spectral theories, Appl. Anal. Discrete Math. 11 (2017) 81--107] defined the matrix $A_α(G)$ as $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$ Let $u$ and $v$ be two vertices of a connected graph $G$. Suppose that $u$ and $v$ are connected by a path $w_0(=v)w_1\cdots w_{s-1}w_s(=u)$ where $d(w_i)=2$ for $1\leq i\leq s-1$. Let $G_{p,s,q}(u,v)$ be the graph obtained by attaching the paths $P_p$ to $u$ and $P_q$ to $v$. Let $s=0,1$. Nikiforov and Rojo [On the $α$-index of graphs with pendent paths, Linear Algebra Appl. 550 (2018) 87--104] conjectured that $ρ_α(G_{p,s,q}(u,v))<ρ_α(G_{p-1,s,q+1}(u,v))$ if $p\geq q+2.$ In this paper, we confirm the conjecture. As applications, firstly, the extremal graph with maximal $A_α$-spectral radius with fixed order and cut vertices is characterized. Secondly, we characterize the extremal tree which attains the maximal $A_α$-spectral radius with fixed order and matching number. These results generalize some known results.

Graphs determined by their $A_α$-spectra
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices, and let $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ denote respectively the adjacency matrix and the degree matrix of $G$. Define $$ A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G) $$ for any real $α\in [0,1]$. The collection of eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$ together with multiplicities are called the \emph{$A_α$-spectrum} of $G$. A graph $G$ is said to be \emph{determined by its $A_α$-spectrum} if all graphs having the same $A_α$-spectrum as $G$ are isomorphic to $G$. We first prove that some graphs are determined by its $A_α$-spectrum for $0\leqα<1$, including the complete graph $K_m$, the star $K_{1,n-1}$, the path $P_n$, the union of cycles and the complement of the union of cycles, the union of $K_2$ and $K_1$ and the complement of the union of $K_2$ and $K_1$, and the complement of $P_n$. Setting $α=0$ or $\frac{1}{2}$, those graphs are determined by $A$- or $Q$-spectra. Secondly, when $G$ is regular, we show that $G$ is determined by its $A_α$-spectrum if and only if the join $G\vee K_m$ is determined by its $A_α$-spectrum for $\frac{1}{2}<α<1$. Furthermore, we also show that the join $K_m\vee P_n$ is determined by its $A_α$-spectrum for $\frac{1}{2}<α<1$. In the end, we pose some related open problems for future study.

On the $A_α$-spectra of graphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 556 (2018) 210-219 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For any real $α\in [0,1]$, Nikiforov \cite{VN1} defined the matrix $A_α(G)$ as $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$$ In this paper, we give some results on the eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$ with $α>1/2$. In particular, we show that for each $e\notin E(G)$, $λ_i(A_α(G+e))\geqλ_i(A_α(G))$. By utilizing the result, we prove have $λ_k(A_α(G))\leqαn-1$ for $2\leq k\leq n$. Moreover, we characterize the extremal graphs with equality holding. Finally, we show that $λ_n(A_α({G}))\geq 2α-1$ if $G$ contains no isolated vertices.

More results on the distance (signless) Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs
Let $G$ be a connected graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. Let $Tr(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions of $G$ and $D(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G$. The distance Laplacian matrix of $G$ is defined as $\mathcal{L}(G)=Tr(G)-D(G)$. The distance signless Laplacian matrix of $G$ is defined as $\mathcal{Q}(G)=Tr(G)+D(G)$. In this paper, we give a lower bound on the distance Laplacian spectral radius in terms of $D_1$, as a consequence, we show that $\partial_1^L(G)\geq n+\lceil\frac{n}ω\rceil$ where $ω$ is the clique number of $G$. Furthermore, we give some graft transformations, by using them, we characterize the extremal graph attains the maximum distance spectral radius in terms of $n$ and $ω$. Moreover, we also give bounds on the distance signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$, and give a confirmation on a conjecture due to Aouchiche and Hansen.

Graphs with small diameter determined by their $D$-spectra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph with vertex set $V(G)=\{v_{1},v_{2},...,v_{n}\}$. The distance matrix $D(G)=(d_{ij})_{n\times n}$ is the matrix indexed by the vertices of $G,$ where $d_{ij}$ denotes the distance between the vertices $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$. Suppose that $λ_{1}(D)\geqλ_{2}(D)\geq\cdots\geqλ_{n}(D)$ are the distance spectrum of $G$. The graph $G$ is said to be determined by its $D$-spectrum if with respect to the distance matrix $D(G)$, any graph having the same spectrum as $G$ is isomorphic to $G$. In this paper, we give the distance characteristic polynomial of some graphs with small diameter, and also prove that these graphs are determined by their $D$-spectra.

A graph $G$ is said to be determined by its $D$-spectrum if with respect to the distance matrix $D(G)$, any graph with the same spectrum as $G$ is isomorphic to $G$. In this paper, we consider spectral characterization on the second largest distance eigenvalue $λ_{2}(D(G))$ of graphs, and prove that the graphs with $λ_{2}(D(G))\leq\frac{17-\sqrt{329}}{2}\approx-0.5692$ are determined by their $D$-spectra.

Sufficient spectral conditions on Hamiltonian and traceable graphs

In this paper, we give sufficient conditions on the spectral radius for a bipartite graph to Hamiltonian and traceable, which expand the results of Lu, Liu and Tian (2012) [10]. Furthermore, we also present tight sufficient conditions on the signless Laplacian spectral radius for a graph to Hamiltonian and traceable, which improve the results of Yu and Fan (2012) [12].
