A new family of weighted double Hurwitz numbers and a new ELSV-type formula with $Ω$-classes
We analyze a new family of weighted double Hurwitz numbers that was introduced as a notable example in the context of the $x-y$ duality for logarithmic topological recursion. We use this family to systematically demonstrate, refine and develop techniques that play a crucial role in the interaction of hypergeometric (Orlov--Scherbin) KP tau functions and intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves. In particular, we discuss the subtleties related to the derivation of the ELSV-type formulas in this context and derive a new, explicit ELSV-type formula in terms of the so-called $Ω$-classes.
Combinatorics and asymptotic behavior for double Hurwitz numbers
Polynomial-in-time algorithms for computing classical Hurwitz numbers were given in [4] based on the Pandharipande equation. The paritition function of double Hurwitz numbers was proved [21] to satisfy the 2-Toda hierarchy. In this paper, similar to [21] we derive Pandharipande-type equations for double Hurwitz numbers from 2-Toda hierarchy. Based on these equations and a method from [4], we study large genus as well as large degree asymptotics of double Hurwitz numbers.
The uniform asymptotics for real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification II: lower bounds and asymptotics
This is the second of two papers on the uniform asymptotics for real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification. Using the modified tropical correspondence theorem established in the first paper of this series, we introduce a combinatorial invariant that serves as a lower bound for real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification. We derive a uniform lower bound for the large-degree and large-genus logarithmic asymptotics of these combinatorial invariants. This uniform lower bound yields the following results: (1) We establish a uniform lower bound for the large-degree and large-genus logarithmic asymptotics of real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification and their complex analogues. In particular, we provide a partial answer to an open question proposed by Dubrovin, Yang and Zagier on the uniform bound for simple Hurwitz numbers. (2) We prove logarithmic equivalence between real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification and their complex analogues as the degree tends to infinity and only simple branch points are added. (3) As the genus tends to infinity and only simple branch points are added, we show that the logarithms of real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification and their complex analogues are of the same order.
One part leaky covers
In our previous work [CMS24] we defined a new class of enumerative invariants called $k$-leaky double Hurwitz descendants, generalizing both descendant integrals of double ramification cycles and $k$-leaky double Hurwitz numbers. Here, we focus on the one-part version of these numbers, i.e.\ when the positive ramification profile is $(d)$. We derive recursions and use them to produce explicit formulas and structure results for some infinite families of these numbers.
Origami: real structure, enumeration and quantum modularity
We define real origami (that is, origami equipped with a real structure) and enumerate them using the combinatorics of zonal polynomials. We explicitly express in terms of sums of divisors the numbers of genus 2 real origami with 2 simple zeros and the numbers of genus 3 real origami with 2 double zeros showing that their generating functions are quantum modular forms. Furthermore, we show that by replacing zonal polynomials with Schur polynomials we can effectively count the classical (complex) origami. As a byproduct, we establish a connection between classical origami and a specific class of double Hurwitz numbers. Finally, we discuss some conjectures and open questions involving Jack functions, quantum modular forms, and integrable hierarchies.
On $\mathbb N$-Coefficient Binomial Polynomiality of Hurwitz Numbers and Generalized Dessin Counting
In this paper, we study a certain type of Hurwitz numbers which count branched covers over the Riemann sphere admitting several branch points with fixed ramification types, one branch point with a fixed number of preimages, and one branch point with an arbitrary ramification type. We prove that the dependence of this kind of Hurwitz numbers on parts of the ramification type over the last point is a polynomial. Moreover, when expanding this polynomial in terms of products of binomial coefficients, we show that the coefficients are always non-negative integers via a pure combinatorial method. Our result generalizes the polynomiality in several models, including the one-part double Hurwitz numbers studied by Goulden-Jackson-Vakil, the one-part double Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles studied by Shadrin-Spitz-Zvonkine, and the generalized dessin counting.
Universal piecewise polynomiality for counting curves in toric surfaces
Inspired by piecewise polynomiality results of double Hurwitz numbers, Ardila and Brugallé introduced an enumerative problem which they call double Gromov--Witten invariants of Hirzebruch surfaces. These invariants serve as a two-dimensional analogue and satisfy a similar piecewise polynomial structure. More precisely, they introduced the enumeration of curves in Hirzebruch surfaces satisfying point conditions and tangency conditions on the two parallel toric boundaries. These conditions are stored in four partitions and the resulting invariants are piecewise polynomial in their entries. Moreover, they found that these expressions also behave polynomially with respect to the parameter determining the underlying Hirzebruch surfaces. Based on work of Ardila and Block, they proposed that such a polynomiality could also hold while changing between more general toric surfaces corresponding to $h$-transverse polygons. In this work, we answer this question affirmatively. Moreover, we express the resulting invariants for $h$-transverse polygons as matrix elements in the two-dimensional bosonic Fock space.

We review the notion of symplectic duality earlier introduced in the context of topological recursion. We show that the transformation of symplectic duality can be expressed as a composition of $x-y$ dualities in a broader context of log topological recursion. As a corollary, we establish nice properties of symplectic duality: various convenient explicit formulas, invertibility, group property, compatibility with topological recursion and KP integrability. As an application of these properties, we get a new and uniform proof of topological recursion for large families of weighted double Hurwitz numbers; this encompasses and significantly extends all previously known results on this matter.
$k$-leaky double Hurwitz descendants
We define a new class of enumerative invariants called $k$-leaky double Hurwitz descendants, generalizing both descendant integrals of double ramification cycles and the $k$-leaky double Hurwitz numbers introduced in previous work of Cavalieri, Markwig and Ranganathan. These numbers are defined as intersection numbers of the logarithmic DR cycle against $ψ$-classes and logarithmic classes coming from piecewise polynomials encoding fixed branch point conditions. We give a tropical graph sum formula for these new invariants, allowing us to show their piecewise polynomiality and a wall-crossing formula in genus zero. We also prove that in genus zero the invariants are always non-negative and give a complete classification of the cases where they vanish.
Towards studying the structure of triple Hurwitz numbers
Going beyond the studies of single and double Hurwitz numbers, we report some progress towards studying Hurwitz numbers which correspond to ramified coverings of the Riemann sphere involving three nonsimple branch points. We first prove a recursion which implies a fundamental identity of Frobenius enumerating factorizations of a permutation in group algebra theory. We next apply the recursion to study Hurwitz numbers involving three nonsimple branch points (besides simple ones),two of them having deterministic ramification profiles while the remaining one having a prescribed number of preimages. The recursion allows us to obtain recurrences as well as explicit formulas for these numbers which also generalize a number of existing results on single and double Hurwitz numbers. The case where one of the nonsimple branch points with deterministic profile has a unique preimage (one-part quasi-triple Hurwitz numbers {or $(1,m)$-part triple Hurwitz numbers}) is particularly studied in detail. We prove an attractive dimension-reduction formula from which any one-part quasi-triple Hurwitz number can be reduced to quasi-triple Hurwitz numbers where both with deterministic profiles are fully ramified. We also obtain the polynomiality of one-part quasi-triple Hurwitz numbers analogous to that implied by the remarkable ELSV formula for single Hurwitz numbers, and discuss the potential connection to intersection theory.
The uniform asymptotics for real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification I: the tropical correspondence
This is the first of two papers on the uniform asymptotics for real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification. Real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification count the number of real ramified coverings of the complex projective line $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^1$ by real Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, where the ramification profiles over $0$ and $\infty$ are $λ$ and $μ$ respectively, and the ramification profiles over the remaining real branch points consist of either $(3,1,\ldots,1)$ or $(2,1,\ldots,1)$.
We apply a modified version of the tropical computation framework developed by Markwig and Rau for real Hurwitz numbers (Math. Z. 281 (2015), no. 1-2, 501-522) to compute the real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification. The new ingredient in our computation is the application of real simple resolution, a technique that enables us to resolve a triple branch point into a pair of simple branch points. Using real simple resolution, we establish a correspondence between real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification and weighted counts of tropical covers. This modified tropical correspondence simplifies the asymptotic analysis of real double Hurwitz numbers with triple ramification.

Counts of curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ with fixed contact order with the toric boundary and satisfying point conditions can be determined with tropical methods by Mikhalkin. If we require that our curves intersect the zero- and infinity-section only in points of contact order $1$, but allow arbitrary contact order for the zero- and infinity-fiber, the corresponding numbers reveal beautiful structural properties such as piecewise polynomiality, similar to the case of double Hurwitz numbers counting covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with special ramification profiles over zero and infinity by Ardila and Brugallé. This result was obtained using the floor diagram method to count tropical curves.
Here, we expand the tropical tools to determine counts of curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. We provide a computational tool (building on Polymake by Gawrilow and Joswig) that determines such numbers of tropical curves for any genus and any contact orders via a straightforward generalization of Mikhalkin's lattice path algorithm. The tool can also be used for other toric surfaces. To enable efficient computations also by hand, we introduce a new counting tool (for the case of rational curves with transverse contacts with the infinity section) which can be seen as a combination of the floor diagram and the lattice path approach: subfloor diagrams. We use both our computational tool and the subfloor diagrams for experiments revealing structural properties of these counts.
We obtain first results on the (piecewise) polynomial structure of counts of rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ with arbitrary contact orders on the zero- and infinity-fiber and restricted choices for the contact orders on the zero- and infinity-section.

We derive an explicit formula for the connected $(n,m)$-point functions associated to an arbitrary diagonal tau-function $τ_f(\boldsymbol{t}^+,\boldsymbol{t}^-)$ of the 2d Toda lattice hierarchy using fermionic computations and the boson-fermion correspondence. Then for fixed $\boldsymbol{t}^-$, we compute the KP-affine coordinates of $τ_f(\boldsymbol{t}^+,\boldsymbol{t}^-)$. As applications, we present a unified approach to compute various types of connected double Hurwitz numbers, including the ordinary double Hurwitz numbers, the double Hurwitz numbers with completed $r$-cycles, and the mixed double Hurwitz numbers. We also apply this method to the computation of the stationary Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb P^1$ relative to two points.

In recent years, monotone double Hurwitz numbers were introduced as a naturally combinatorial modification of double Hurwitz numbers. Monotone double Hurwitz numbers share many structural properties with their classical counterparts, such as piecewise polynomaility, while the quantitative properties of these two numbers are quite different. We consider real analogues of monotone double Hurwitz numbers and study the asymptotics for these real analogues. The key ingredient is an interpretation of real tropical covers with arbitrary splittings as factorizations in the symmetric group which generalizes the result from Guay-Paquet, Markwig, and Rau (Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN, 2016(1):258-293, 2016). By using the above interpretation, we consider three types of real analogues of monotone double Hurwitz numbers: real monotone double Hurwitz numbers relative to simple splittings, relative to arbitrary splittings and real mixed double Hurwitz numbers. Under certain conditions, we find lower bounds for these real analogues, and obtain logarithmic asymptotics for real monotone double Hurwitz numbers relative to arbitrary splittings and real mixed double Hurwitz numbers. In particular, under given conditions real mixed double Hurwitz numbers are logarithmically equivalent to complex double Hurwitz numbers. We construct a family of real tropical covers and use them to show that real monotone double Hurwitz numbers relative to simple splittings are logarithmically equivalent to monotone double Hurwitz numbers with specific conditions. This is consistent with the logarithmic equivalence of real double Hurwitz numbers and complex double Hurwitz numbers.

We consider weighted double Hurwitz numbers, with the weight given by arbitrary rational function times an exponent of the completed cycles. Both special singularities are arbitrary, with the lengths of cycles controlled by formal parameters (up to some maximal length on both sides), and on one side there are also distinguished cycles controlled by degrees of formal variables. In these variables the weighted double Hurwitz numbers are presented as coefficients of expansions of some differentials that we prove to satisfy topological recursion.
Our results partly resolve a conjecture that we made in [arXiv:2106.08368] and are based on a system of new explicit functional relations for the more general $(m,n)$-correlation functions, which correspond to the case when there are distinguished cycles controlled by formal variables in both special singular fibers. These $(m,n)$-correlation functions are the main theme of this paper and the latter explicit functional relations are of independent interest for combinatorics of weighted double Hurwitz numbers. We also put our results in the context of what we call the "symplectic duality", which is a generalization of the $x-y$ duality, a phenomenon known in the theory of topological recursion.
Topological Expansion of Oscillatory BGW and HCIZ Integrals at Strong Coupling
We prove that the BGW and HCIZ integrals admit large N topological expansions for complex coupling and complex external fields, provided the coupling is sufficiently strong. The expansion coefficients are holomorphic functions which are genus-specific generating functions for the monotone single and double Hurwitz numbers, respectively.

We study the $n$-point differentials corresponding to Kadomtsev-Petviashvili tau functions of hypergeometric type (also known as Orlov-Scherbin partition functions), with an emphasis on their $\hbar^2$-deformations and expansions. Under the naturally required analytic assumptions, we prove certain higher loop equations that, in particular, contain the standard linear and quadratic loop equations, and thus imply the blobbed topological recursion. We also distinguish two large families of the Orlov-Scherbin partition functions that do satisfy the natural analytic assumptions, and for these families we prove in addition the so-called projection property and thus the full statement of the Chekhov-Eynard-Orantin topological recursion. A particular feature of our argument is that it clarifies completely the role of $\hbar^2$-deformations of the Orlov-Scherbin parameters for the partition functions, whose necessity was known from a variety of earlier obtained results in this direction but never properly understood in the context of topological recursion. As special cases of the results of this paper one recovers new and uniform proofs of the topological recursion to all previously studied cases of enumerative problems related to weighted double Hurwitz numbers. By virtue of topological recursion and the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula this, in turn, gives new and uniform proofs of almost all ELSV-type formulas discussed in the literature.

We study a generalization of the Harish-Chandra - Itzykson - Zuber integral to tensors and its expansion over trace-invariants of the two external tensors. This gives rise to natural generalizations of monotone double Hurwitz numbers, which count certain families of constellations. We find an expression of these numbers in terms of monotone simple Hurwitz numbers, thereby also providing expressions for monotone double Hurwitz numbers of arbitrary genus in terms of the single ones. We give an interpretation of the different combinatorial quantities at play in terms of enumeration of nodal surfaces. In particular, our generalization of Hurwitz numbers is shown to enumerate certain isomorphism classes of branched coverings of a bouquet of $D$ 2-spheres that touch at one common non-branch node.

We prove that topological recursion applied to the spectral curve of colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of torus knots reproduces the n-point functions of a particular partition function called the extended Ooguri-Vafa partition function. This generalizes and refines the results of Brini-Eynard-Marino and Borot-Eynard-Orantin.
We also discuss how the statement of spectral curve topological recursion in this case fits into the program of Alexandrov-Chapuy-Eynard-Harnad of establishing the topological recursion for general weighted double Hurwitz numbers partition functions (a.k.a. KP tau-functions of hypergeometric type).

We derive a new explicit formula in terms of sums over graphs for the $n$-point correlation functions of general formal weighted double Hurwitz numbers coming from the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili tau functions of hypergeometric type (also known as Orlov-Scherbin partition functions). Notably, we use the change of variables suggested by the associated spectral curve, and our formula turns out to be a polynomial expression in a certain small set of formal functions defined on the spectral curve.
