Non-orientable branched coverings, $b$-Hurwitz numbers, and positivity for multiparametric Jack expansions
Published in Adv. Math. 409, 108645, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a one-parameter deformation of the 2-Toda tau-function of (weighted) Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We show that its coefficients are polynomials in the deformation parameter $b$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients count generalized branched coverings of the sphere by an arbitrary surface, orientable or not, with an appropriate $b$-weighting that "measures" in some sense their non-orientability. Notable special cases include non-orientable dessins d'enfants for which we prove the most general result so far towards the Matching-Jack conjecture and the "$b$-conjecture" of Goulden and Jackson from 1996, expansions of the $β$-ensemble matrix model, deformations of the HCIZ integral, and $b$-Hurwitz numbers that we introduce here and that are $b$-deformations of classical (single or double) Hurwitz numbers obtained for $b=0$. A key role in our proof is played by a combinatorial model of non-orientable constellations equipped with a suitable $b$-weighting, whose partition function satisfies an infinite set of PDEs. These PDEs have two definitions, one given by Lax equations, the other one following an explicit combinatorial decomposition.
Double Hurwitz numbers: polynomiality, topological recursion and intersection theory
Published in Math. Annalen (2022) • View PublicationBIB
Double Hurwitz numbers enumerate branched covers of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with prescribed ramification over two points and simple ramification elsewhere. In contrast to the single case, their underlying geometry is not well understood. In previous work by the second- and third-named authors, the double Hurwitz numbers were conjectured to satisfy a polynomiality structure and to be governed by the topological recursion, analogous to existing results concerning single Hurwitz numbers. In this paper, we resolve these conjectures by a careful analysis of the semi-infinite wedge representation for double Hurwitz numbers, by pushing further methods previously used for other Hurwitz problems. We deduce a preliminary version of an ELSV-like formula for double Hurwitz numbers, by deforming the Johnson-Pandharipande-Tseng formula for orbifold Hurwitz numbers and using properties of the topological recursion under variation of spectral curves. In the course of this analysis, we unveil certain vanishing properties of the Chiodo classes.

Wall-crossing and recursion formulae for tropical Jucys covers
In recent work, the authors derived a tropical interpretation of monotone and strictly monotone double Hurwitz numbers. In this paper, we apply the technique of tropical flows to this interpretation in order to provide a new proof of the piecewise polynomiality of these enumerative invariants. Moreover, we derive new types of wall-crossing formulae.

Mirror curve of orbifold Hurwitz numbers
Edge-contraction operations form an effective tool in various graph enumeration problems, such as counting Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants and simple and double Hurwitz numbers. These counting problems can be solved by a mechanism known as topological recursion, which is a mirror B-model corresponding to these counting problems. We show that for the case of orbifold Hurwitz numbers, the mirror objects, i.e., the spectral curve and the differential forms on it, are constructed solely from the edge-contraction operations of the counting problem in genus $0$ and one marked point. This forms a parallelism with Gromov-Witten theory, where genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants correspond to mirror B-model holomorphic geometry.

Towards the topological recursion for double Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Single Hurwitz numbers enumerate branched covers of the Riemann sphere with specified genus, prescribed ramification over infinity, and simple branching elsewhere. They exhibit a remarkably rich structure. In particular, they arise as intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves and are governed by the topological recursion of Chekhov, Eynard and Orantin. Double Hurwitz numbers are defined analogously, but with prescribed ramification over both zero and infinity. Goulden, Jackson and Vakil have conjectured that double Hurwitz numbers also arise as intersection numbers on moduli spaces. In this paper, we repackage double Hurwitz numbers as enumerations of branched covers weighted by certain monomials and conjecture that they are governed by the topological recursion. Evidence is provided in the form of the associated quantum curve and low genus calculations. We furthermore reduce the conjecture to a weaker one, concerning a certain polynomial structure of double Hurwitz numbers. Via the topological recursion framework, our main conjecture should lead to a direct connection to enumerative geometry, thus shedding light on the aforementioned conjecture of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil.

Bi-pruned Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hurwitz numbers enumerate ramified coverings of the Riemann sphere with fixed ramification data. Certain kinds of ramification data are of particular interest, such as double Hurwitz numbers, which count covers with fixed arbitrary ramification over $0$ and $\infty$ and simple ramification over $b$ points, where $b$ is given by the Riemann-Hurwitz formula. In this work, we introduce the notion of bi-pruned double Hurwitz numbers. This is a new enumerative problem, which yields smaller numbers but completely determines double Hurwitz numbers. They count a relevant subset of covers and share many properties with double Hurwitz numbers, such as piecewise polynomial behaviour and an expression in the symmetric group. Thus, we may view them as a core of the double Hurwitz numbers problem. This work is built on and generalises previous work of Do--Norbury and the author.

Weighted Hurwitz numbers and topological recursion
Published in Commun. Math. Phys, 375, 237-305 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
The KP and 2D Toda tau-functions of hypergeometric type that serve as generating functions for weighted single and double Hurwitz numbers are related to the topological recursion programme. A graphical representation of such weighted Hurwitz numbers is given in terms of weighted constellations. The associated classical and quantum spectral spectral curves are derived, and these are interpreted combinatorially in terms of the graphical model. The pair correlators are given a finite Christoffel-Darboux representation and determinantal expressions are obtained for the multipair correlators. The genus expansion of the multicurrent correlators is shown to provide generating series for weighted Hurwitz numbers of fixed ramification profile lengths. The WKB series for the Baker function is derived and used to deduce the loop equations and the topological recursion relations in the case of polynomial weight functions.

Lower bounds and asymptotics of real double Hurwitz numbers
Published in Math. Ann. 375.1-2 (2019), pp. 895-915 • View PublicationBIB
We study the real counterpart of double Hurwitz numbers, called real double Hurwitz numbers here. We establish a lower bound for these numbers with respect to their dependence on the distribution of branch points. We use it to prove, under certain conditions, existence of real Hurwitz covers as well as logarithmic equivalence of real and classical Hurwitz numbers. The lower bound is based on the \enquote{tropical} computation of real Hurwitz numbers in arXiv:1412.4235.

Asymptotics of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers
Published in J. Phys. A 51, No 22, 225201 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
This work concerns both the semiclassical and zero temperature asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. The partition function for quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers can be interpreted in terms of the energy distri- bution of a quantum Bose gas with vanishing fugacity. We compute the leading semi- classical term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \ra 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple single and double Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and Okounkov [20,22]. The KP-Toda $τ$-function that serves as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown to have the $τ$-function of [20,22] as its leading term in the classical limit, and, with suitable scaling, the same holds for the partition function, the weights and expectations of Hurwitz numbers. We also compute the zero temperature limit $T \ra 0$ of the partition function and quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers. The KP or Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers are shown to give the one for Belyi curves in the zero temperature limit and, with suitable scaling, the same holds true for the partition function, the weights and the expectations of Hurwitz numbers.
Combinatorial structure of colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials for torus knots
Published in Commun. Number Theory Phys. 13 (2019), no. 4, 763-826 • View PublicationBIB
We rewrite the (extended) Ooguri-Vafa partition function for colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials for torus knots in terms of the free-fermion (semi-infinite wedge) formalism, making it very similar to the generating function for double Hurwitz numbers. This allows us to conjecture the combinatorial meaning of full expansion of the correlation differentials obtained via the topological recursion on the Brini-Eynard-Mariño spectral curve for the colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of torus knots. This correspondence suggests a structural combinatorial result for the extended Ooguri-Vafa partition function. Namely, its coefficients should have a quasi-polynomial behavior, where non-polynomial factors are given by the Jacobi polynomials. We prove this quasi-polynomiality in a purely combinatorial way. In addition to that, we show that the (0,1)- and (0,2)-functions on the corresponding spectral curve are in agreement with the extension of the colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials data.

Simple maps, Hurwitz numbers, and Topological Recursion
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 380 (2020), 581-654 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of fully simple maps, which are maps with non self-intersecting disjoint boundaries. In contrast, maps where such a restriction is not imposed are called ordinary. We study in detail the combinatorics of fully simple maps with topology of a disk or a cylinder. We show that the generating series of simple disks is given by the functional inversion of the generating series of ordinary disks. We also obtain an elegant formula for cylinders. These relations reproduce the relation between moments and free cumulants established by Collins et al. math.OA/0606431, and implement the symplectic transformation $x \leftrightarrow y$ on the spectral curve in the context of topological recursion. We conjecture that the generating series of fully simple maps are computed by the topological recursion after exchange of $x$ and $y$. We propose an argument to prove this statement conditionally to a mild version of symplectic invariance for the $1$-hermitian matrix model, which is believed to be true but has not been proved yet. Our argument relies on an (unconditional) matrix model interpretation of fully simple maps, via the formal hermitian matrix model with external field. We also deduce a universal relation between generating series of fully simple maps and of ordinary maps, which involves double monotone Hurwitz numbers. In particular, (ordinary) maps without internal faces -- which are generated by the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble -- and with boundary perimeters $(λ_1,\ldots,λ_n)$ are strictly monotone double Hurwitz numbers with ramifications $λ$ above $\infty$ and $(2,\ldots,2)$ above $0$. Combining with a recent result of Dubrovin et al. math-ph/1612.02333, this implies an ELSV-like formula for these Hurwitz numbers.

Zero-temperature limit of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers
The partition function for quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers can be interpreted in terms of the energy distribution of a quantum Bose gas with vanishing fugacity. We compute the leading term of the partition function and the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers in the zero temperature limit $T \rightarrow 0$, as well as the next order corrections. The leading term is shown to reproduce the case of uniformly weighted Hurwitz numbers of Belyi curves. In particular, the KP or Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown in the limit to give the one for Belyi curves and, with suitable scaling, the same holds true for the partition function, the weights and the expectations of Hurwitz numbers.

Fermionic approach to weighted Hurwitz numbers and topological recursion
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 360, 777-826 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
A fermionic representation is given for all the quantities entering in the generating function approach to weighted Hurwitz numbers and topological recursion. This includes: KP and 2D Toda $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type, which serve as generating functions for weighted single and double Hurwitz numbers; the Baker function, which is expanded in an adapted basis obtained by applying the same dressing transformation to all vacuum basis elements; the multipair correlators and the multicurrent correlators. Multiplicative and differential recursion relations are deduced for the adapted bases and their duals, and a Christoffel-Darboux type formula is derived for the pair correlator. The quantum and classical spectral curves linking this theory with the topological recursion programme are derived, as well as the generalized cut and join equations. The results are detailed for four special cases: the simple single and double Hurwitz numbers, the weakly monotone case, corresponding to signed enumeration of coverings, the strongly monotone case, corresponding to Belyi curves and the simplest version of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers.

Chamber structure for some equivariant relative Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$ in genus $0$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study genus $0$ equivariant relative Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$ whose corresponding relative stable maps are totally ramified over one point. For fixed number of marked points, we show that such invariants are piecewise polynomials in some parameter space. The parameter space can then be divided into polynomial domains, called chambers. We determine the difference of polynomials between two neighboring chambers. In some special chamber, which we called the totally negative chamber, we show that such a polynomial can be expressed in a simple way. The chamber structure here shares some similarities to that of double Hurwitz numbers.

A monodromy graph approach to the piecewise polynomiality of simple, monotone and Grothendieck dessins d'enfants double Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hurwitz numbers count genus $g$, degree $d$ covers of the complex projective line with fixed branched locus and fixed ramification data. An equivalent description is given by factorisations in the symmetric group. Simple double Hurwitz numbers are a class of Hurwitz-type counts of specific interest. In recent years a related counting problem in the context of random matrix theory was introduced as so-called monotone Hurwitz numbers. These can be viewed as a desymmetrised version of the Hurwitz-problem. A combinatorial interpolation between simple and monotone double Hurwitz numbers was introduced as mixed double Hurwitz numbers and it was proved that these objects are piecewise polynomial in a certain sense. Moreover, the notion of strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers has risen interest as it is equivalent to a certain Grothendieck dessins d'enfant count. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial interpolation between simple, monotone and strictly monotone double Hurwitz numbers as \textit{triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers}. Our aim is twofold: Using a connection between triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers and tropical covers in terms of so-called monodromy graphs, we give algorithms to compute the polynomials for triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers in all genera using Erhart theory. We further use this approach to study the wall-crossing behaviour of triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers in genus $0$ in terms of related Hurwitz-type counts. All those results specialise to the extremal cases of simple, monotone and Grothendieck dessins d'enfants Hurwitz numbers.

Degrees of cohomological classes of multisinguliarities in Hurwitz spaces of rational functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main goal of the present paper are new formulae for degrees of strata in Hurwitz spaces of rational functions having two degenerate critical values with preimages of prescribed multiplicities. We consider the case where the multiplicities of the preimages of one critical value are arbitrary, while the second critical value has degeneracy of codimension~$1$. Our formulae are based on the universal cohomological expressions for codimension~$1$ strata in terms of certain basic cohomology classes in general Hurwitz spaces of rational functions obtained by M.~Kazarian and S.~Lando. We prove new relations valid in cohomology of Hurwitz spaces that were conjectured by M.~Kazarian on the base of computer experiments. As a corollary, we obtain new, previously unknown, explicit formulae for certain families of double Hurwitz numbers in genus~$0$. One may hope that the methods developed in the present paper are applicable to proving more general relations in cohomology rings of Hurwitz spaces and deducing more general formulae for double Hurwitz numbers.

Semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
This work concerns the semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. We compute the leading term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \to 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and Okounkov. The KP-Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown to converge in the classical limit to the generating function of Pandharipande and Okounkov and, with suitable scaling, so do the partition function, the weights and expectations of Hurwitz numbers.

We prove two explicit formulae for one-part double Hurwitz numbers with completed 3-cycles. We define "combinatorial Hodge integrals" from these numbers in the spirit of the celebrated ELSV formula. The obtained results imply some explicit formulae and properties of the combinatorial Hodge integrals.

On the convergence of monotone Hurwitz generating functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Monotone Hurwitz numbers were introduced by the authors as a combinatorially natural desymmetrization of the Hurwitz numbers studied in enumerative algebraic geometry. Over the course of several papers, we developed the structural theory of monotone Hurwitz numbers and demonstrated that it is in many ways parallel to that of their classical counterparts. In this note, we identify an important difference between the monotone and classical worlds: fixed-genus generating functions for monotone double Hurwitz numbers are absolutely summable, whereas those for classical double Hurwitz numbers are not. This property is crucial for applications of monotone Hurwitz theory in analysis. We quantify the growth rate of monotone Hurwitz numbers in fixed genus by giving universal upper and lower bounds on the radii of convergence of their generating functions.

Ramifications of Hurwitz theory, KP integrability and quantum curves

In this paper we revisit several recent results on monotone and strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers, providing new proofs. In particular, we use various versions of these numbers to discuss methods of derivation of quantum spectral curves from the point of view of KP integrability and derive new examples of quantum curves for the families of double Hurwitz numbers.
