Natural statistics for spectral samples
Published in Annals of Statistics 2013, Vol. 41, No. 2, 982-1004 • View PublicationBIB
Spectral sampling is associated with the group of unitary transformations acting on matrices in much the same way that simple random sampling is associated with the symmetric group acting on vectors. This parallel extends to symmetric functions, k-statistics and polykays. We construct spectral k-statistics as unbiased estimators of cumulants of trace powers of a suitable random matrix. Moreover we define normalized spectral polykays in such a way that when the sampling is from an infinite population they return products of free cumulants.

Formal Groups, Witt vectors and Free Probability
We establish a link between free probability theory and Witt vectors, via the theory of formal groups. We derive an exponential isomorphism which expresses Voiculescu's free multiplicative convolution $\boxtimes$ as a function of the free additive convolution $\boxplus$. Subsequently we continue our previous discussion of the relation between complex cobordism and free probability. We show that the generic $n$th free cumulant corresponds to the cobordism class of the $(n-1)$-dimensional complex projective space. This permits us to relate several probability distributions from random matrix theory to known genera, and to build a dictionary. Finally, we discuss aspects of free probability and the asymptotic representation theory of the symmetric group from a conformal field theoretic perspective and show that every distribution with mean zero is embeddable into the Universal Grassmannian of Sato-Segal-Wilson.

Combinatorics of asymptotic representation theory
Published in European Congress of Mathematics, Kraków, 2--7 July, 2012, pp: 531-545, European Mathematical Society Publishing House • View PublicationBIB
The representation theory of the symmetric groups S_n is intimately related to combinatorics: combinatorial objects such as Young tableaux and combinatorial algorithms such as Murnaghan-Nakayama rule. In the limit as n tends to infinity, the structure of these combinatorial objects and algorithms becomes complicated and it is hard to extract from them some meaningful answers to asymptotic questions. In order to overcome these difficulties, a kind of dual combinatorics of the representation theory of the symmetric groups was initiated in 1990s. We will concentrate on one of its highlights: Kerov polynomials which express characters in terms of, so called, free cumulants.

k-Divisible random variables in free probability
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study the notion of k-divisible elements in a non-commutative probability space. A k-divisible element is a (non-commutative) random variable whose n-th moment vanishes whenever n is not a multiple of k. First, we consider the combinatorial convolution \ast in the lattices NC of non-crossing partitions and NC^k of k-divisible non-crossing partitions and show that convolving k times with the zeta-function in NC is equivalent to convolving once with the zeta-function in NC^k. Furthermore, when x is k-divisible, we derive a formula for the free cumulants of x^k in terms of the free cumulants of x, involving k-divisible non-crossing partitions. Second, we prove that if a and s are free and s is k-divisible then sps and a are free, whenever p is any polynomial (on a and s) of degree k - 2 on s. Moreover, we define a notion of R-diagonal k-tuples and prove similar results. Next, we show that free multiplicative convolution between a measure concentrated in the positive real line and a probability measure with k-symmetry is well defined. Analytic tools to calculate this convolution are developed. Finally, we concentrate on free additive powers of k-symmetric distributions and prove that μt is a well defined probability measure, for all t > 1. We derive central limit theorems and Poisson type ones. More generally, we consider freely infinitely divisible measures and prove that free infinite divisibility is maintained under the mapping μ\rightarrow μ^k . We conclude by focusing on (k-symmetric) free stable distributions, for which we prove a reproducing property generalizing the ones known for one sided and real symmetric free stable laws.

Cumulants of the q-semicircular law, Tutte polynomials, and heaps
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 65 (2013) 863-878 • View PublicationBIB
The q-semicircular distribution is a probability law that interpolates between the Gaussian law and the semicircular law. There is a combinatorial interpretation of its moments in terms of matchings where q follows the number of crossings, whereas for the free cumulants one has to restrict the enumeration to connected matchings. The purpose of this article is to describe combinatorial properties of the classical cumulants. We show that like the free cumulants, they are obtained by an enumeration of connected matchings, the weight being now an evaluation of the Tutte polynomial of a so-called crossing graph. The case q=0 of these cumulants was studied by Lassalle using symmetric functions and hypergeometric series. We show that the underlying combinatorics is explained through the theory of heaps, which is Viennot's geometric interpretation of the Cartier-Foata monoid. This method also gives results for the classical cumulants of the free Poisson law.

A new family of time-space harmonic polynomials with respect to Lévy processes
Published • View PublicationBIB
By means of a symbolic method, a new family of time-space harmonic polynomials with respect to Lévy processes is given. The coefficients of these polynomials involve a formal expression of Lévy processes by which many identities are stated. We show that this family includes classical families of polynomials such as Hermite polynomials. Poisson-Charlier polynomials result to be a linear combinations of these new polynomials, when they have the property to be time-space harmonic with respect to the compensated Poisson process. The more general class of Lévy-Sheffer polynomials is recovered as a linear combination of these new polynomials, when they are time-space harmonic with respect to Lévy processes of very general form. We show the role played by cumulants of Lévy processes so that connections with boolean and free cumulants are also stated.
Characters of symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants and Frobenius coordinates

Free cumulants are nice and useful functionals of the shape of a Young diagram, in particular they give the asymptotics of normalized characters of symmetric groups S(n) in the limit n\to\infty. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for normalized characters of the symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants. We also express characters in terms of Frobenius coordinates. Our formulas involve counting certain factorizations of a given permutation. The main tool are Stanley polynomials which give values of characters on multirectangular Young diagrams.

Integrability of Hurwitz Partition Functions. I. Summary
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012) 045209 • View PublicationBIB
Partition functions often become τ-functions of integrable hierarchies, if they are considered dependent on infinite sets of parameters called time variables. The Hurwitz partition functions Z = \sum_R d_R^{2-k}χ_R(t^{(1)})...χ_R(t^{(k)})\exp(\sum_n ξ_nC_R(n)) depend on two types of such time variables, t and ξ. KP/Toda integrability in t requires that k\leq 2 and also that C_R(n) are selected in a rather special way, in particular the naive cut-and-join operators are not allowed for n>2. Integrability in ξfurther restricts the choice of C_R(n), forbidding, for example, the free cumulants. It also requires that k\leq 1. The quasiclassical integrability (the WDVV equations) is naturally present in ξvariables, but also requires a careful definition of the generating function.

Zonal polynomials via Stanley's coordinates and free cumulants
Published in Journal of Algebra, Volume 334, Issue 1, 2011, Pages 338-373 • View PublicationBIB
We study zonal characters which are defined as suitably normalized coefficients in the expansion of zonal polynomials in terms of power-sum symmetric functions. We show that the zonal characters, just like the characters of the symmetric groups, admit a nice combinatorial description in terms of Stanley's multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams. We also study the analogue of Kerov polynomials, namely we express the zonal characters as polynomials in free cumulants and we give an explicit combinatorial interpretation of their coefficients. In this way, we prove two recent conjectures of Lassalle for Jack polynomials in the special case of zonal polynomials.

Cumulants and convolutions via Abel polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide an unifying polynomial expression giving moments in terms of cumulants, and viceversa, holding in the classical, boolean and free setting. This is done by using a symbolic treatment of Abel polynomials. As a by-product, we show that in the free cumulant theory the volume polynomial of Pitman and Stanley plays the role of the complete Bell exponential polynomial in the classical theory. Moreover via generalized Abel polynomials we construct a new class of cumulants, including the classical, boolean and free ones, and the convolutions linearized by them. Finally, via an umbral Fourier transform, we state a explicit connection between boolean and free convolution.

Asymptotics of characters of symmetric groups: structure of Kerov character polynomials
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 119 (6), 2012, pp 1174-1193 • View PublicationBIB
We study asymptotics of characters of the symmetric groups on a fixed conjugacy class. It was proved by Kerov that such a character can be expressed as a polynomial in free cumulants of the Young diagram (certain functionals describing the shape of the Young diagram). We show that for each genus there exists a universal symmetric polynomial which gives the coefficients of the part of Kerov character polynomials with the prescribed homogeneous degree. The existence of such symmetric polynomials was conjectured by Lassalle.

On the computation of classical, boolean and free cumulants
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces a simple and computationally efficient algorithm for conversion formulae between moments and cumulants. The algorithm provides just one formula for classical, boolean and free cumulants. This is realized by using a suitable polynomial representation of Abel polynomials. The algorithm relies on the classical umbral calculus, a symbolic language introduced by Rota and Taylor in 1994, that is particularly suited to be implemented by using software for symbolic computations. Here we give a MAPLE procedure. Comparisons with existing procedures, especially for conversions between moments and free cumulants, as well as examples of applications to some well-known distributions (classical and free) end the paper.

Explicit combinatorial interpretation of Kerov character polynomials as numbers of permutation factorizations

We find an explicit combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of Kerov character polynomials which express the value of normalized irreducible characters of the symmetric groups S(n) in terms of free cumulants R_2,R_3,... of the corresponding Young diagram. Our interpretation is based on counting certain factorizations of a given permutation.

Jack polynomials and free cumulants

We study the coefficients in the expansion of Jack polynomials in terms of power sums. We express them as polynomials in the free cumulants of the transition measure of an anisotropic Young diagram. We conjecture that such polynomials have nonnegative integer coefficients. This extends recent results about normalized characters of the symmetric group.

Combinatorial interpretation and positivity of Kerov's character polynomials
Published in J. Alg. Comb., 29 (4), pp. 473 - 507 (2009) • View PublicationBIB
Kerov's polynomials give irreducible character values in term of the free cumulants of the associated Young diagram. We prove in this article a positivity result on their coefficients, which extends a conjecture of S. Kerov. Our method, through decomposition of maps, gives a description of the coefficients of the k-th Kerov's polynomials using permutations in S(k). We also obtain explicit formulas or combinatorial interpretations for some coefficients. In particular, we are able to compute the subdominant term for character values on any fixed permutation (it was known for cycles).

Two positivity conjectures for Kerov polynomials
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 41 (2008), 407-422 • View PublicationBIB
Kerov polynomials express the normalized characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group, evaluated on a cycle, as polynomials in the free cumulants of the associated Young diagram. We present two positivity conjectures for their coefficients. The latter are stronger than the positivity conjecture of Kerov-Biane, recently proved by Feray.

Free Meixner states
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 276 (2007), 863-899 • View PublicationBIB
Free Meixner states are a class of functionals on non-commutative polynomials introduced in math.CO/0410482. They are characterized by a resolvent-type form for the generating function of their orthogonal polynomials, by a recursion relation for those polynomials, or by a second-order non-commutative differential equation satisfied by their free cumulant functional. In this paper, we construct an operator model for free Meixner states. By combinatorial methods, we also derive an operator model for their free cumulant functionals. This, in turn, allows us to construct a number of examples. Many of these examples are shown to be trivial, in the sense of being free products of functionals which depend on only a single variable, or rotations of such free products. On the other hand, the multinomial distribution is a free Meixner state and is not a product. Neither is a large class of tracial free Meixner states which are analogous to the simple quadratic exponential families in statistics.

Asymptotics of characters of symmetric groups related to Stanley character formula
Published in Ann. Math. 173 (2011), no. 2, 887-906 • View PublicationBIB
We prove an upper bound for characters of the symmetric groups. Namely, we show that there exists a constant a>0 with a property that for every Young diagram λwith n boxes, r(λ) rows and c(λ) columns |Tr ρ^λ(π) / Tr ρ^λ(e)| < [a max(r(λ)/n, c(λ)/n,|π|/n) ]^{|π|}, where |π| is the minimal number of factors needed to write π\in S_n as a product of transpositions. We also give uniform estimates for the error term in the Vershik-Kerov's and Biane's character formulas and give a new formula for free cumulants of the transition measure.

An explicit form for Kerov's character polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kerov considered the normalized characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group, evaluated on a cycle, as a polynomial in free cumulants. Biane has proved that this polynomial has integer coefficients, and made various conjectures. Recently, Sniady has proved Biane's conjectured explicit form for the first family of nontrivial terms in this polynomial. In this paper, we give an explicit expression for all terms in Kerov's character polynomials. Our method is through Lagrange inversion.

Orthogonal polynomials with a resolvent-type generating function
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 360 (2008), 4125-4143 • View PublicationBIB
The subject of this paper are polynomials in multiple non-commuting variables. For polynomials of this type orthogonal with respect to a state, we prove a Favard-type recursion relation. On the other hand, free Sheffer polynomials are a polynomial family in non-commuting variables with a resolvent-type generating function. Among such families, we describe the ones that are orthogonal. Their recursion relations have a more special form; the best way to describe them is in terms of the free cumulant generating function of the state of orthogonality, which turns out to satisfy a type of second-order difference equation. If the difference equation is in fact first order, and the state is tracial, we show that the state is necessarily a rotation of a free product state. We also describe interesting examples of non-tracial infinitely divisible states with orthogonal free Sheffer polynomials.
