Umbral calculus over a vector space
Let $V$ be a vector space over $\mathbb F=\mathbb R$ or $\mathbb C$. We develop a basis-free umbral calculus over $V$. We define the vector space of polynomials over $V$, and polynomial sequences in it. We discuss shift-invariant operators acting in polynomials over $V$. We define polynomial sequences of binomial type and Sheffer sequences over $V$. We provide equivalent characterizations of these polynomial sequences. We prove two recurrence formulas for Sheffer sequences. With each Sheffer sequence, we associate a linear operator acting in polynomials over $V$, which we call a Sheffer operator. We prove that the set of Sheffer operators is a group for the usual product of linear operators, which is isomorphic to the Riordan group of pairs of formal tensor power series in a variable from $V$. Under the assumption that $V$ is an algebra, we lift every Sheffer sequence over $\mathbb F$ to a Sheffer sequence over $V$. We provide examples of such lifting.

The Grammatical Calculus
We give an introduction to the grammatical calculus, which originated from the umbral calculus of Rota. Context-free grammars arise in computer science. Differential operators can be viewed as the production rules of context-free grammars. By the properties of differential operators, we may perform the grammatical calculus on a rigorous basis, for the purposes of deriving combinatorial identities and computing generating functions. A grammatical labeling serves as a bridge between a combinatorial structure and the grammar. A grammar may be instrumental in constructing a bijection between two combinatorial structures sharing the same grammar. Such a bijection is called a grammar assisted bijection. Many combinatorial structures admit recursive constructions that are context-free in some sense, such as those corresponding to the Eulerian polynomials, Bell polynomials, the Ramanujan polynomials and the Narayana polynomials.

On a general identity and a resulting class of umbral operators
We prove a new universal identity for umbral operators. This motivates the definition of a subclass obeying a simplified identity, which we then fully characterize. The results are illustrated with common examples of the theory of umbral calculus.

On formulas and fractional exponents for umbral operators
This study presents a new formula for umbral operators which provides three key insights. First, it clarifies a connection between umbral calculus and iteration theory. Second, it paves the way for a definition of fractional exponents of umbral operators. And lastly, its proof synthesizes a multitude of existing operational calculus results that demonstrates a new level of effectiveness in the field. We demonstrate its application through a new and natural extension of the Laguerre polynomials.

Explicit Expressions for Iterates of Power Series
In this paper, we present several formulas for both the discrete and fractional iterates of an invertible power series $f$, using a new unifying approach based on umbral calculus. Known formulas are extended, and their proofs simplified, while new expressions are introduced. In particular, by employing $q$-calculus identities, we eliminate the requirement for $f'(0)$ to equal $1$ and the resulting general expressions for the iterative logarithm are obtained as well.

Operational Umbral Calculus
In this paper, we investigate the power of nearly purely operational techniques in the study of umbral calculus. We present a concise reconstruction of the theory based on a systematic use of linear operators, with particular attention to umbral operators. We also give an in-depth study of the generating functions associated to umbral calculus, and show how these lead to short proofs of several advanced results, including the Lagrange-Bürmann inversion theorem. Finally, we discuss pseudoinverses for delta operators and illustrate our methods with a variety of examples.

Type-B analogue of Bell numbers using Rota's Umbral calculus approach
Published in EPTCS 403, 2024, pp. 43-48 • View PublicationBIB
Rota used the functional L to recover old properties and obtain some new formulas for the Bell numbers. Tanny used Rota's functional L and the celebrated Worpitzky identity to obtain some expression for the ordered Bell numbers, which can be seen as an evident to the fact that the ordered Bell numbers are gamma-positive. In this paper, we extend some of Rota's and Tanny's results to the framework of the set partitions of Coxeter type B.

Transmutations from the Covariant Transform on the Heisenberg Group and an Extended Umbral Principle
Published in Lobachevskii J. Math, 2023, Vol. 44, No. 8, pp. 3384-3397 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss several seemingly assorted objects: the umbral calculus, generalised translations and associated transmutations, symbolic calculus of operators. The common framework for them is representations of the Weyl algebra of the Heisenberg group by ladder operators. Transporting various properties between different implementations we review some classic results and new opportunities.
Unified Bernoulli-Euler polynomials of Apostol type
Published • View PublicationBIB
The object of this paper is to introduce and study properties of unified Apostol-Bernoulli and Apostol-Euler polynomials noted by $\left\{\mathfrak{V_{n}}(x;λ;μ)\right\}_{n \geq 0}$. We study some arithmetic properties of $\left\{\mathfrak{V_{n}}(x;λ;μ)\right\}_{n \geq 0}$ as their connection to Apostol-Euler polynomials and Apostol-Bernoulli polynomials. Also, we give derivation and integration representations of $\left\{\mathfrak{V_{n}}(x;λ;μ)\right\}_{n \geq 0}$. Finally, we use the umbral calculus approach to deduce symmetric identities.

Differential transcendence of Bell numbers and relatives: a Galois theoretic approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2003 Klazar proved that the ordinary generating function of the sequence of Bell numbers is differentially transcendental over the field $\mathbb{C}(\{t\})$ of meromorphic functions at $0$. We show that Klazar's result is an instance of a general phenomenon that can be proven in a compact way using difference Galois theory. We present the main principles of this theory in order to prove a general result about differential transcendence over $\mathbb{C}(\{t\})$, that we apply to many other (infinite classes of) examples of generating functions, including as very special cases the ones considered by Klazar. Most of our examples belong to Sheffer's class, well studied notably in umbral calculus. They all bring concrete evidence in support to the Pak-Yeliussizov conjecture, according to which a sequence whose both ordinary and exponential generating functions satisfy nonlinear differential equations with polynomial coefficients necessarily satisfies a linear recurrence with polynomial coefficients.

New degenerated polynomials arising from non-classical Umbral Calculus
We introduce new generalizations of the Bernoulli, Euler, and Genocchi polynomials and numbers based on the Carlitz-Tsallis degenerate exponential function and concepts of the Umbral Calculus associated with it. Also, we present generalizations of some familiar identities and connection between these kinds of Bernoulli, Euler, and Genocchi polynomials. Moreover, we establish a new analogue of the Euler identity for the degenerate Bernoulli numbers.
Operational Methods in the Study of Sobolev-Jacobi Polynomials
Published in Mathematics, vol. 7, no. 2, p. 124, Jan. 2019 • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by ideas from umbral calculus and based on the two types of integrals occurring in the defining equations for the gamma and the reciprocal gamma functions, respectively, we develop a multi-variate version of umbral calculus and of the so-called umbral image technique. Besides providing a class of new formulae for generalized hypergeometric functions and an implementation of series manipulations for computing lacunary generating functions, our main application of these techniques is the study of Sobolev-Jacobi polynomials. Motivated by applications to theoretical chemistry, we moreover present a deep link between generalized normal-ordering techniques introduced by Gurappa and Panigrahi, two-variable Hermite polynomials and our integral-based series transforms. Notably, we thus calculate all K-tuple L-shifted lacunary exponential generating functions for a certain family of SJ polynomials explicitly.

Refinements of the Bell and Stirling numbers
We introduce new refinements of the Bell, factorial, and unsigned Stirling numbers of the first and second kind that unite the derangement, involution, associated factorial, associated Bell, incomplete Stirling, restricted factorial, restricted Bell, and $r$-derangement numbers (and probably more!). By combining methods from analytic combinatorics, umbral calculus, and probability theory, we derive several recurrence relations and closed form expressions for these numbers. By specializing our results to the classical case, we recover explicit formulae for the Bell and Stirling numbers as sums over compositions.

Eulerian idempotent, pre-Lie logarithm and combinatorics of trees
The aim of this paper is to bring together the three objects in the title. Recall that, given a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, the Eulerian idempotent is a canonical projection from the enveloping algebra $U(\mathfrak{g})$ to $\mathfrak{g}$. The Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff product and the Magnus expansion can both be expressed in terms of the Eulerian idempotent, which makes it interesting to establish explicit formulas for the latter. We show how to reduce the computation of the Eulerian idempotent to the computation of a logarithm in a certain pre-Lie algebra of planar, binary, rooted trees. The problem of finding formulas for the pre-Lie logarithm, which is interesting in its own right -- being related to operad theory, numerical analysis and renormalization -- is addressed using techniques inspired by umbral calculus. As a consequence of our analysis, we find formulas both for the Eulerian idempotent and the pre-Lie logarithm in terms of the combinatorics of trees.

A New Approach to the $r$-Whitney Numbers by Using Combinatorial Differential Calculus
In the present article we introduce two new combinatorial interpretations of the $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind obtained from the combinatorics of the differential operators associated to the grammar $G:=\{ y\rightarrow yx^{m}, x\rightarrow x\}$. By specializing $m=1$ we obtain also a new combinatorial interpretation of the $r$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. Again, by specializing to the case $r=0$ we introduce a new generalization of the Stirling number of the second kind and through them a binomial type family of polynomials that generalizes Touchard's. Moreover, we show several well-known identities involving the $r$-Dowling polynomials and the $r$-Whitney numbers using the combinatorial differential calculus. Finally we prove that the $r$-Dowling polynomials are a Sheffer family relative to the generalized Touchard binomial family, study their umbral inverses, and introduce $[m]$-Stirling numbers of the first kind. From the relation between umbral calculus and the Riordan matrices we give several new combinatorial identities involving the $r$-Whitney number of both kinds, Bernoulli and Euler polynomials.
Multivariate Delta Goncarov and Abel Polynomials
Published in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, Vol. 446, No. 1 (Feb 2017), pp. 663-680 • View PublicationBIB
Classical Gončarov polynomials are polynomials which interpolate derivatives. Delta Gončarov polynomials are polynomials which interpolate delta operators, e.g., forward and backward difference operators. We extend fundamental aspects of the theory of classical bivariate Gončarov polynomials and univariate delta Gončarov polynomials to the multivariate setting using umbral calculus. After introducing systems of delta operators, we define multivariate delta Gončarov polynomials, show that the associated interpolation problem is always solvable, and derive a generating function (an Appell relation) for them. We show that systems of delta Gončarov polynomials on an interpolation grid $Z \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ are of binomial type if and only if $Z = A\mathbb{N}^d$ for some $d\times d$ matrix $A$. This motivates our definition of delta Abel polynomials to be exactly those delta Gončarov polynomials which are based on such a grid. Finally, compact formulas for delta Abel polynomials in all dimensions are given for separable systems of delta operators. This recovers a former result for classical bivariate Abel polynomials and extends previous partial results for classical trivariate Abel polynomials to all dimensions.

Algebra of linear recurrence relations in arbitrary characteristic
The goal of this paper is to present an algebraic approach to the basic results of the theory of linear recurrence relations. This approach is based on the ideas from the theory of representations of one endomorphisms (a special case of which is well known as the theory of the Jordan normal form of matrices). The notion of the divided derivatives, an analogue of the divided powers, turned out to be crucial for proving the results in a natural way and in their natural generality. The final form of our methods was influenced by the the umbral calculus of G.-C. Rota.

Central differences, Euler numbers and symbolic methods
I relate some coefficients encountered when computing the functional determinants on spheres to the central differentials of nothing. In doing this I use some historic works, in particular transcribing the elegant symbolic formalism of Jeffery (1861) into central difference form which has computational advantages for Euler numbers, as discovered by Shovelton (1915). I derive sum rules for these, and for the central differentials, the proof of which involves an interesting expression for powers of sech x as multiple derivatives. I present a more general, symbolic treatment of central difference calculus which allows known, and unknown, things to be obtained in an elegant and compact fashion gaining, at no cost, the expansion of the powers of the inverse sinh, a basic central function. Systematic use is made of the operator 2 asinh(D/2). Umbral calculus is employed to compress the operator formalism. For example the orthogonality/completeness of the factorial numbers, of the first and second kinds, translates, umbrally, to T(t(x))=x. The classic expansions of multiple angle cosh and sinh in terms of powers of sinh are thence obtained with minimal effort.
Riordan arrays and applications via the classical umbral calculus
We use the classical umbral calculus to describe Riordan arrays. Here, a Riordan array is generated by a pair of umbrae, and this provides efficient proofs of several basic results of the theory such as the multiplication rule, the recursive properties, the fundamental theorem and the connection with Sheffer sequences. In particular, we show that the fundamental theorem turns out to be a reformulation of the umbral Abel identity. As an application, we give an elementary approach to the problem of extending integer powers of Riordan arrays to complex powers in such a way that additivity of the exponents is preserved. Also, ordinary Riordan arrays are studied within the classical umbral perspective and some combinatorial identities are discussed regarding Catalan numbers, Fibonacci numbers and Chebyshev polynomials.

A new algorithm for computing the multivariate Faà di Bruno's formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new algorithm for computing the multivariate Faà di Bruno's formula is provided. We use a symbolic approach based on the classical umbral calculus that turns the computation of the multivariate Faà di Bruno's formula into a suitable multinomial expansion. We propose a MAPLE procedure whose computational times are faster compared with the ones existing in the literature. Some illustrative applications are also provided.
