Inspired by ideas from umbral calculus and based on the two types of integrals occurring in the defining equations for the gamma and the reciprocal gamma functions, respectively, we develop a multi-variate version of umbral calculus and of the so-called umbral image technique. Besides providing a class of new formulae for generalized hypergeometric functions and an implementation of series manipulations for computing lacunary generating functions, our main application of these techniques is the study of Sobolev-Jacobi polynomials. Motivated by applications to theoretical chemistry, we moreover present a deep link between generalized normal-ordering techniques introduced by Gurappa and Panigrahi, two-variable Hermite polynomials and our integral-based series transforms. Notably, we thus calculate all K-tuple L-shifted lacunary exponential generating functions for a certain family of SJ polynomials explicitly.
Explicit formulae for all higher order exponential lacunary generating functions of Hermite polynomials
For a sequence $P=(p_n(x))_{n=0}^{\infty}$ of polynomials $p_n(x)$, we study the $K$-tuple and $L$-shifted exponential lacunary generating functions $\mathcal{G}_{K,L}(λ;x):=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{λ^n}{n!} p_{n\cdot K+L}(x)$, for $K=1,2\dotsc$ and $L=0,1,2\dotsc$. We establish an algorithm for efficiently computing $\mathcal{G}_{K,L}(λ;x)$ for generic polynomial sequences $P$. This procedure is exemplified by application to the study of Hermite polynomials, whereby we obtain closed-form expressions for $\mathcal{G}_{K,L}(λ;x)$ for arbitrary $K$ and $L$, in the form of infinite series involving generalized hypergeometric functions. The basis of our method is provided by certain resummation techniques, supplemented by operational formulae. Our approach also reproduces all the results previously known in the literature.
Combinatorics of chemical reaction systems
We propose a concise stochastic mechanics framework for chemical reaction systems that allows to formulate evolution equations for three general types of data: the probability generating functions, the exponential moment generating functions and the factorial moment generating functions. This formulation constitutes an intimate synergy between techniques of statistical physics and of combinatorics. We demonstrate how to analytically solve the evolution equations for all six elementary types of single-species chemical reactions by either combinatorial normal-ordering techniques, or, for the binary reactions, by means of Sobolev-Jacobi orthogonal polynomials. The former set of results in particular highlights the relationship between infinitesimal generators of stochastic evolution and parametric transformations of probability distributions.

We study a two-parameter family $a_{n}(p,t)$ of deformations of the Fuss numbers. We show a sufficient condition for positive definiteness of $a_n(p,t)$ and prove that some of the corresponding probability measures are infinitely divisible with respect to the additive free convolution.

We give a purely combinatorial proof of the Glaisher-Crofton identity which derives from the analysis of discrete structures generated by iterated second derivative. The argument illustrates utility of symbolic and generating function methodology of modern enumerative combinatorics and their applications to computational problems.

We prove that if $p\geq 1$ and $-1\leq r\leq p-1$ then the binomial sequence $\binom{np+r}{n}$, $n=0,1,...$, is positive definite and is the moment sequence of a probability measure $ν(p,r)$, whose support is contained in $\left[0,p^p(p-1)^{1-p}\right]$. If $p>1$ is a rational number and $-1<r\leq p-1$ then $ν(p,r)$ is absolutely continuous and its density function $V_{p,r}$ can be expressed in terms of the Meijer $G$-function. In particular cases $V_{p,r}$ is an elementary function. We show that for $p>1$ the measures $ν(p,-1)$ and $ν(p,0)$ are certain free convolution powers of the Bernoulli distribution. Finally we prove that the binomial sequence $\binom{np+r}{n}$ is positive definite if and only if either $p\geq 1$, $-1\leq r\leq p-1$ or $p\leq 0$, $p-1\leq r \leq 0$. The measures corresponding to the latter case are reflections of the former ones.

We study the probability measure $μ_{0}$ for which the moment sequence is $\binom{3n}{n}\frac{1}{n+1}$. We prove that $μ_{0}$ is absolutely continuous, find the density function and prove that $μ_{0}$ is infinitely divisible with respect to the additive free convolution.

We show that the combinatorial numbers known as {\em Bell numbers} are generic in quantum physics. This is because they arise in the procedure known as {\em Normal ordering} of bosons, a procedure which is involved in the evaluation of quantum functions such as the canonical partition function of quantum statistical physics, {\it inter alia}. In fact, we shall show that an evaluation of the non-interacting partition function for a single boson system is identical to integrating the {\em exponential generating function} of the Bell numbers, which is a device for encapsulating a combinatorial sequence in a single function. We then introduce a remarkable equality, the Dobinski relation, and use it to indicate why renormalisation is necessary in even the simplest of perturbation expansions for a partition function. Finally we introduce a global algebraic description of this simple model, giving a Hopf algebra, which provides a starting point for extensions to more complex physical systems.

Starting with the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra, fundamental to quantum physics, we first show how the ordering of the non-commuting operators intrinsic to that algebra gives rise to generalizations of the classical Stirling Numbers of Combinatorics. These may be expressed in terms of infinite, but {\em row-finite}, matrices, which may also be considered as endomorphisms of $\C[[x]]$. This leads us to consider endomorphisms in more general spaces, and these in turn may be expressed in terms of generalizations of the ladder-operators familiar in physics.
Rational Hadamard products via Quantum Diagonal Operators
We use the remark that, through Bargmann-Fock representation, diagonal operators of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra are scalars for the Hadamard product to give some properties (like the stability of periodic fonctions) of the Hadamard product by a rational fraction. In particular, we provide through this way explicit formulas for the multiplication table of the Hadamard product in the algebra of rational functions in $\C[[z]]$.

In a recent series of communications we have shown that the reordering problem of bosons leads to certain combinatorial structures. These structures may be associated with a certain graphical description. In this paper, we show that there is a Hopf Algebra structure associated with this problem which is, in a certain sense, unique.
Free quasi-symmetric functions, product actions and quantum field theory of partitions
We examine two associative products over the ring of symmetric functions related to the intransitive and Cartesian products of permutation groups. As an application, we give an enumeration of some Feynman type diagrams arising in Bender's QFT of partitions. We end by exploring possibilities to construct noncommutative analogues.
Partition functions and graphs: A combinatorial approach
Although symmetry methods and analysis are a necessary ingredient in every physicist's toolkit, rather less use has been made of combinatorial methods. One exception is in the realm of Statistical Physics, where the calculation of the partition function, for example, is essentially a combinatorial problem. In this talk we shall show that one approach is via the normal ordering of the second quantized operators appearing in the partition function. This in turn leads to a combinatorial graphical description, giving essentially Feynman-type graphs associated with the theory. We illustrate this methodology by the explicit calculation of two model examples, the free boson gas and a superfluid boson model. We show how the calculation of partition functions can be facilitated by knowledge of the combinatorics of the boson normal ordering problem; this naturally gives rise to the Bell numbers of combinatorics. The associated graphical representation of these numbers gives a perturbation expansion in terms of a sequence of graphs analogous to zero - dimensional Feynman diagrams.

A conventional context for supersymmetric problems arises when we consider systems containing both boson and fermion operators. In this note we consider the normal ordering problem for a string of such operators. In the general case, upon which we touch briefly, this problem leads to combinatorial numbers, the so-called Rook numbers. Since we assume that the two species, bosons and fermions, commute, we subsequently restrict ourselves to consideration of a single species, single-mode boson monomials. This problem leads to elegant generalisations of well-known combinatorial numbers, specifically Bell and Stirling numbers. We explicitly give the generating functions for some classes of these numbers. In this note we concentrate on the combinatorial graph approach, showing how some important classical results of graph theory lead to transparent representations of the combinatorial numbers associated with the boson normal ordering problem.

We solve the boson normal ordering problem for F[(a*)^r a^s], with r,s positive integers, where a* and a are boson creation and annihilation operators satisfying [a,a*]=1. That is, we provide exact and explicit expressions for the normal form wherein all a's are to the right. The solution involves integer sequences of numbers which are generalizations of the conventional Bell and Stirling numbers whose values they assume for r=s=1. A comprehensive theory of such generalized combinatorial numbers is given including closed-form expressions (extended Dobinski-type formulas)and generating functions. These last are special expectation values in boson coherent states.

In this communication, we consider the normal ordering of sums of elements of the form (a*^r a a*^s), where a* and a are boson creation and annihilation operators. We discuss the integration of the associated one-parameter groups and their combinatorial by-products. In particular, we show how these groups can be realized as groups of substitutions with prefunctions.

Conventional Bell and Stirling numbers arise naturally in the normal ordering of simple monomials in boson operators. By extending this process we obtain generalizations of these combinatorial numbers, defined as coherent state matrix elements of arbitrary monomials, as well as the associated Dobinski relations. These Bell-type numbers may be considered as power moments and give rise to positive measures which allow the explicit construction of new classes of coherent states.
Combinatorics of Boson Normal Ordering: the Dobinski Formula Revisited
We derive explicit formulas for the normal ordering of powers of arbitrary monomials of boson operators. These formulas lead to generalisations of conventional Bell and Stirling numbers and to appropriate generalisations of the Dobinski relations. These new combinatorial numbers are shown to be coherent state matrix elements of powers of the monomials in question. It is further demonstrated that such Bell-type numbers, when considered as power moments, give rise to positive measures on the positive half-axis, which in many cases can be written in terms of known functions.

We construct coherent states using sequences of combinatorial numbers such as various binomial and trinomial numbers, and Bell and Catalan numbers. We show that these states satisfy the condition of the resolution of unity in a natural way. In each case the positive weight functions are given as solutions of associated Stieltjes or Hausdorff moment problems, where the moments are the combinatorial numbers.
