Formal calculus and umbral calculus
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 17(1) (2010) R95 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we use the viewpoint of the formal calculus underlying vertex operator algebra theory to study certain aspects of the classical umbral calculus and we introduce and study certain operators generalizing the classical umbral shifts. We begin by calculating the exponential generating function of the higher derivatives of a composite function, following a short, elementary proof which naturally arose as a motivating computation related to a certain crucial "associativity" property of an important class of vertex operator algebras. Very similar (somewhat forgotten) proofs had appeared by the 19-th century, of course without any motivation related to vertex operator algebras. Using this formula, we derive certain results, including especially the calculation of certain adjoint operators, of the classical umbral calculus. This is, roughly speaking, a reversal of the logical development of some standard treatments, which have obtained formulas for the higher derivatives of a composite function, most notably Faà di Bruno's formula, as a consequence of umbral calculus. We set our results in the context of some standard material in what seems a natural fashion given our point of view. We also show a connection between the Virasoro algebra and the classical umbral shifts. This leads naturally to a more general class of operators, which we introduce, and which include the classical umbral shifts as a special case. We prove a few basic facts about these operators.

Macdonald polynomials and symmetric functions
The ring of symmetric functions $Λ$, with natural basis given by the Schur functions, arise in many different areas of mathematics. For example, as the cohomology ring of the grassmanian, and as the representation ring of the symmetric group. One may define a coproduct on $Λ$ by the plethystic addition on alphabets. In this way the ring of symmetric functions becomes a Hopf algebra. The Littlewood--Richardson numbers may be viewed as the structure constants for the co-product in the Schur basis. In the first part of this thesis we show that by using a generalization of the classical umbral calculus of Gian-Carlo Rota, one may deform the basis of Schur functions to find many other bases for which the Littlewood--Richardson numbers as coproduct structure constants. The Macdonald polynomials are a somewhat mysterious qt-deformation of the Schur functions. The second part of this thesis contains a proof a generating function identity for the Macdonald polynomials which was originally conjectured by Kawanaka.

Recurrence relations for polynomial sequences via Riordan matrices
We give recurrence relations for any family of generalized Appell polynomials unifying so some known recurrences of many classical sequences of polynomials. Our main tool to get our goal is the Riordan group. We use the product of Riordan matrices to interpret some relationships between different families of polynomials. Moreover using the Hadamard product of series we get a general recurrence relation for the polynomial sequences associated to the so called generalized umbral calculus.

On the computation of classical, boolean and free cumulants
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces a simple and computationally efficient algorithm for conversion formulae between moments and cumulants. The algorithm provides just one formula for classical, boolean and free cumulants. This is realized by using a suitable polynomial representation of Abel polynomials. The algorithm relies on the classical umbral calculus, a symbolic language introduced by Rota and Taylor in 1994, that is particularly suited to be implemented by using software for symbolic computations. Here we give a MAPLE procedure. Comparisons with existing procedures, especially for conversions between moments and free cumulants, as well as examples of applications to some well-known distributions (classical and free) end the paper.

The classical umbral calculus: Sheffer sequences
Following the approach of Rota and Taylor \cite{SIAM}, we present an innovative theory of Sheffer sequences in which the main properties are encoded by using umbrae. This syntax allows us noteworthy computational simplifications and conceptual clarifications in many results involving Sheffer sequences. To give an indication of the effectiveness of the theory, we describe applications to the well-known connection constants problem, to Lagrange inversion formula and to solving some recurrence relations.

A new method for fast computing unbiased estimators of cumulants
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose new algorithms for generating $k$-statistics, multivariate $k$-statistics, polykays and multivariate polykays. The resulting computational times are very fast compared with procedures existing in the literature. Such speeding up is obtained by means of a symbolic method arising from the classical umbral calculus. The classical umbral calculus is a light syntax that involves only elementary rules to managing sequences of numbers or polynomials. The cornerstone of the procedures here introduced is the connection between cumulants of a random variable and a suitable compound Poisson random variable. Such a connection holds also for multivariate random variables.

The Euler characteristic as a polynomial in the Chern classes
Published in International Journal of Algebra, Vol. 2, 2008, no. 13-16, 757-769. • Search Publication
In this paper we obtain some explicit expressions for the Euler characteristic of a rank n coherent sheaf F on P^N and of its twists F(t) as polynomials in the Chern classes c_i(F), also giving algorithms for the computation. The employed methods use techniques of umbral calculus involving symmetric functions and Stirling numbers.

More on the Bernoulli and Taylor Formula for Extended Umbral Calculus
Published in Advances in Applied Clifford Algebras Volume 16, Number 1,(2006) 29-39 • Search Publication
One delivers here the extended Bernoulli and Taylor formula of a new sort with the rest term of the Cauchy type recently derived by the author in the case of the so called $ψ$-difference calculus which constitutes the representative for the purpose case of extended umbral calculus. The central importance of such a type formulas is beyond any doubt. Recent publications do confirm this historically established experience. Its links via umbrality to combinatorics are known at least since Rota and Mullin source papers then up to recently extended by many authors to be indicated in the sequel.

An example of algebraization of analysis and Fibonacci cobweb poset characterization
In recent Kwasniewski's papers inspired by O. V. Viskov it was shown that the $ψ$-calculus in parts appears to be almost automatic, natural extension of classical operator calculus of Rota - Mullin or equivalently - of umbral calculus of Roman and Rota. At the same time this calculus is an example of the algebraization of the analysis - here restricted to the algebra of polynomials. The first part of the article is the review of the recent author's contribution. The main definitions and theorems of Finite Fibonomial Operator Calculus which is a special case of $ψ$-extented Rota's finite operator calculus are presented there. In the second part the characterization of Fibonacci Cobweb poset P as DAG and oDAG is given. The dim 2 poset such that its Hasse diagram coincide with digraf of P is constructed.

Pattern Avoiding Ballot Paths and Finite Operator Calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
Counting pattern avoiding ballot paths begins with a careful analysis of the pattern. Not the length, but the characteristics of the pattern are responsible for the difficulties in finding explicit solutions. Certain features, like overlap and difference in number of right and up steps determine the solution of the recursion formula. If the recursion can be solved by a polynomial sequence, we apply the Finite Operator Calculus to find an explicit form of the solution in terms of binomial coefficients. A unifying framework for $k$-statistics, polykays and their multivariate generalizations
Published in Bernoulli 2008, Vol. 14, No. 2, 440-468 • View PublicationBIB
Through the classical umbral calculus, we provide a unifying syntax for single and multivariate $k$-statistics, polykays and multivariate polykays. From a combinatorial point of view, we revisit the theory as exposed by Stuart and Ord, taking into account the Doubilet approach to symmetric functions. Moreover, by using exponential polynomials rather than set partitions, we provide a new formula for $k$-statistics that results in a very fast algorithm to generate such estimators.

Set maps, umbral calculus, and the chromatic polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
Some important properties of the chromatic polynomial also hold for any polynomial set map satisfying p_S(x+y)=\sum_{T\uplus U=S}p_T(x)p_U(y). Using umbral calculus, we give a formula for the expansion of such a set map in terms of any polynomial sequence of binomial type. This leads to some new expansions of the chromatic polynomial. We also describe a set map generalization of Abel polynomials.

A symbolic method for k-statistics
Trough the classical umbral calculus, we provide new, compact and easy to handle expressions of k-statistics, and more in general of U-statistics. In addition such a symbolic method can be naturally extended to multivariate case and to generalized k-statistics.

An umbral setting for cumulants and factorial moments
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide an algebraic setting for cumulants and factorial moments through the classical umbral calculus. Main tools are the compositional inverse of the unity umbra, connected with the logarithmic power series, and a new umbra here introduced, the singleton umbra. Various formulae are given expressing cumulants, factorial moments and central moments by umbral functions.

Umbral nature of the Poisson random variables
Extending the rigorous presentation of the classical umbral calculus given by Rota and Taylor in 1994, the so-called partition polynomials are interpreted with the aim to point out the umbral nature of the Poisson random variables. Among the new umbrae introduced, the main tool is the partition umbra that leads also to a simple expression of the functional composition of the exponential power series. Moreover a new short proof of the Lagrange inversion formula is given.

Baxter Algebras and Differential Algebras
Published in Differential Algebra and Related Topics, World Scientific Publishing Company, 2002, 281-305 • Search Publication
A Baxter algebra is a commutative algebra $A$ that carries a generalized integral operator. In the first part of this paper we review past work of Baxter, Miller, Rota and Cartier in this area and explain more recent work on explicit constructions of free Baxter algebras that extended the constructions of Rota and Cartier. In the second part of the paper we will use these explicit constructions to relate Baxter algebras to Hopf algebras and give applications of Baxter algebras to the umbral calculus in combinatorics.

Baxter Algebras and Umbral Calculus
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 27 (2001), 405-426 • Search Publication
We apply recent constructions of free Baxter algebras to the study of the umbral calculus. We give a characterization of the umbral calculus in terms of Baxter algebra. This characterization leads to a natural generalization of the umbral calculus that include the classical umbral calculus in a family of $λ$-umbral calculi parameterized by $λ$ in the base ring.

$ψ$-Appell polynomials` solutions of an umbral difference nonhomogeneous equation
Published in Bulletin de la Societe des Sciences et des Lettres de £ódê (54) Serie: Recherches sur les Deformations Vol. 45 (2004) 11-15 • Search Publication
One discovers why the solution of generalized umbral calculus difference nonhomogeneous equation in the form recently proposed by the author extends here now to generalized appellian delta operator and corresponding polynomials case almost automatically. The reason for that is just the proper framework of the generalized finite operator calculus recently being developed by the present author.

The reference links to the modern classical umbral calculus before that known as blissardian symbolic method are numerous. Rota founded and then extended finite operator calculus has links to references which are plenty numerous. The references via links to the difference q calculus umbra way treaded or without even referring to umbra are giant numerous. These reference links now result in counting in thousands the relevant papers . The purpose of the present attempt is to offer one of the keys to enter the world of those thousands of references.
