A symbolic method for solving linear recurrences of combinatorial and statistical interest is introduced. This method essentially relies on a representation of polynomial sequences as moments of a symbol that looks as the framework of a random variable with no reference to any probability space. We give several examples of applications and state an explicit form for the class of linear recurrences involving Sheffer sequences satisfying a special initial condition. The results here presented can be easily implemented in a symbolic software.

Hypergeometric functions and zonal polynomials are the tools usually addressed in the literature to deal with the expected value of the elementary symmetric functions in non-central Wishart latent roots. The method here proposed recovers the expected value of these symmetric functions by using the umbral operator applied to the trace of suitable polynomial matrices and their cumulants. The employment of a suitable linear operator in place of hypergeometric functions and zonal polynomials was conjectured by de Waal in 1972. Here we show how the umbral operator accomplishes this task and consequently represents an alternative tool to deal with these symmetric functions. When special formal variables are plugged in the variables, the evaluation through the umbral operator deletes all the monomials in the latent roots except those contributing in the elementary symmetric functions. Cumulants further simplify the computations taking advantage of the convolution structure of the polynomial trace. Open problems are addressed at the end of the paper.

Spectral sampling is associated with the group of unitary transformations acting on matrices in much the same way that simple random sampling is associated with the symmetric group acting on vectors. This parallel extends to symmetric functions, k-statistics and polykays. We construct spectral k-statistics as unbiased estimators of cumulants of trace powers of a suitable random matrix. Moreover we define normalized spectral polykays in such a way that when the sampling is from an infinite population they return products of free cumulants.

By a symbolic method, we introduce multivariate Bernoulli and Euler polynomials as powers of polynomials whose coefficients involve multivariate Lévy processes. Many properties of these polynomials are stated straightforwardly thanks to this representation, which could be easily implemented in any symbolic manipulation system. A very simple relation between these two families of multivariate polynomials is provided.

By means of a symbolic method, a new family of time-space harmonic polynomials with respect to Lévy processes is given. The coefficients of these polynomials involve a formal expression of Lévy processes by which many identities are stated. We show that this family includes classical families of polynomials such as Hermite polynomials. Poisson-Charlier polynomials result to be a linear combinations of these new polynomials, when they have the property to be time-space harmonic with respect to the compensated Poisson process. The more general class of Lévy-Sheffer polynomials is recovered as a linear combination of these new polynomials, when they are time-space harmonic with respect to Lévy processes of very general form. We show the role played by cumulants of Lévy processes so that connections with boolean and free cumulants are also stated.

A new algorithm for computing the multivariate Faà di Bruno's formula is provided. We use a symbolic approach based on the classical umbral calculus that turns the computation of the multivariate Faà di Bruno's formula into a suitable multinomial expansion. We propose a MAPLE procedure whose computational times are faster compared with the ones existing in the literature. Some illustrative applications are also provided.

We provide an unifying polynomial expression giving moments in terms of cumulants, and viceversa, holding in the classical, boolean and free setting. This is done by using a symbolic treatment of Abel polynomials. As a by-product, we show that in the free cumulant theory the volume polynomial of Pitman and Stanley plays the role of the complete Bell exponential polynomial in the classical theory. Moreover via generalized Abel polynomials we construct a new class of cumulants, including the classical, boolean and free ones, and the convolutions linearized by them. Finally, via an umbral Fourier transform, we state a explicit connection between boolean and free convolution.

This paper introduces a simple and computationally efficient algorithm for conversion formulae between moments and cumulants. The algorithm provides just one formula for classical, boolean and free cumulants. This is realized by using a suitable polynomial representation of Abel polynomials. The algorithm relies on the classical umbral calculus, a symbolic language introduced by Rota and Taylor in 1994, that is particularly suited to be implemented by using software for symbolic computations. Here we give a MAPLE procedure. Comparisons with existing procedures, especially for conversions between moments and free cumulants, as well as examples of applications to some well-known distributions (classical and free) end the paper.
The classical umbral calculus: Sheffer sequences
Following the approach of Rota and Taylor \cite{SIAM}, we present an innovative theory of Sheffer sequences in which the main properties are encoded by using umbrae. This syntax allows us noteworthy computational simplifications and conceptual clarifications in many results involving Sheffer sequences. To give an indication of the effectiveness of the theory, we describe applications to the well-known connection constants problem, to Lagrange inversion formula and to solving some recurrence relations.

We propose new algorithms for generating $k$-statistics, multivariate $k$-statistics, polykays and multivariate polykays. The resulting computational times are very fast compared with procedures existing in the literature. Such speeding up is obtained by means of a symbolic method arising from the classical umbral calculus. The classical umbral calculus is a light syntax that involves only elementary rules to managing sequences of numbers or polynomials. The cornerstone of the procedures here introduced is the connection between cumulants of a random variable and a suitable compound Poisson random variable. Such a connection holds also for multivariate random variables.

By means of the notion of umbrae indexed by multisets, a general method to express estimators and their products in terms of power sums is derived. A connection between the notion of multiset and integer partition leads immediately to a way to speed up the procedures. Comparisons of computational times with known procedures show how this approach turns out to be more efficient in eliminating much unnecessary computation.
A symbolic method for k-statistics
Trough the classical umbral calculus, we provide new, compact and easy to handle expressions of k-statistics, and more in general of U-statistics. In addition such a symbolic method can be naturally extended to multivariate case and to generalized k-statistics.

We provide an algebraic setting for cumulants and factorial moments through the classical umbral calculus. Main tools are the compositional inverse of the unity umbra, connected with the logarithmic power series, and a new umbra here introduced, the singleton umbra. Various formulae are given expressing cumulants, factorial moments and central moments by umbral functions.
Umbral nature of the Poisson random variables
Extending the rigorous presentation of the classical umbral calculus given by Rota and Taylor in 1994, the so-called partition polynomials are interpreted with the aim to point out the umbral nature of the Poisson random variables. Among the new umbrae introduced, the main tool is the partition umbra that leads also to a simple expression of the functional composition of the exponential power series. Moreover a new short proof of the Lagrange inversion formula is given.
