Revisiting $q$-Derangement Numbers via Decorated Permutations
This note aims to provide a direct combinatorial proof of the Gessel--Reutenauer--Wachs formula for $q$-derangement numbers in the setting of decorated permutations, without using the $q$-binomial inversion formula. Decorated permutations, introduced by Postnikov in his study of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, provide a natural framework for Chen's signed fixed-point model. Our proof is based on a major-index generating function for decorated permutations with a fixed number of signed fixed points, together with a sign-reversing and descent-set-preserving involution, thereby answering a question raised by Chen. This involution was discovered through human--AI collaboration.

A unified planar network approach to total positivity of combinatorial matrices and real-rootedness of polynomials
We present a common sufficient condition for the total positivity of combinatorial triangles and their reversals, as well as the real-rootedness of generating functions of the rows. The proof technique is to construct a unified planar network that represent the matrix, its reversal, and the Toeplitz matrices of rows, respectively, when selecting different sets of sources and sinks. These results can be applied to the exponential Riordan arrays, the iteration matrices and the $n$-recursive matrices. As consequences, we prove the total positivity and real-rootedness properties associated to many well-known combinatorial numbers, including the Stirling numbers of both kinds (of type A and type B), the Lah numbers, the idempotent numbers, the Delannoy numbers, and the derangement numbers of type A and type B.

The ratio monotonicity of Eulerian-type polynomials
This paper is motivated by determining the location of modes of some unimodal Eulerian-type polynomials. The notion of ratio monotonicity was introduced by Chen-Xia when they investigated the $q$-derangement numbers. Let $(f_n(x))_{n\geqslant 0}$ be a sequence of real polynomials satisfying the Eulerian-type recurrence relation $$f_{n+1}(x)=(anx+bx+c)f_n(x)+ax(1-x)\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}f_n(x),~f_0(x)=1,$$ where $a,b$ and $c$ are nonnegative integers. Assume that $deg f_n(x)=n$. Setting $g_n(x)=x^nf_n\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)$, we have $$g_{n+1}(x)=(anx+b+cx)g_n(x)+ax(1-x)\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}g_n(x),$$ We find that if $a+c\geqslant b\geqslant c>0$, then $f_n(x)$ is bi-gamma-positive and $g_n(x)$ is ratio monotone. As applications, we discover the ratio monotonicity of several Eulerian-type polynomials, including the $(exc, cyc)$ $q$-Eulerian polynomials, the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials, a kind of generalized Eulerian polynomials studied by Carlitz-Scoville, the $(des_B,neg)$ $q$-Eulerian polynomials over the hyperoctahedral group and the $r$-colored Eulerian polynomials. In particular, let $A_n(x,q)$ be the $(exc, cyc)$ $q$-Eulerian polynomials, we find that the polynomials $x^{n-1}A_n(1/x,q)$ are ratio monotone when $0<q\leqslant 1$, while $A_n(x,q)$ are ratio monotone when $1\leqslant q\leqslant 2$.

Partial Deranged Bell Numbers and Their Combinatorial Properties
We introduce a novel generalization of deranged Bell numbers by defining the partial deranged Bell numbers $w_{n,r}$, which count the number of set partitions of $\left[ n\right] $ with exactly $r$ fixed blocks, while the remaining blocks are deranged. This construction provides a unified framework that connects partial derangements, Stirling numbers, and ordered Bell numbers. We investigate their combinatorial properties, including explicit formulas, generating functions, and recurrence relations. Moreover, we demonstrate that these numbers are expressible in terms of classical sequences such as deranged Bell numbers and ordered Bell numbers, and reveal their relationship to complementary Bell numbers, offering insights relevant to Wilf's conjecture. Notably, we derive the identity \[ \tildeφ_{n}=\Tilde{w}_{n,0}-\Tilde{w}_{n,1}=\tilde{w}_{n-1,0}-2\tilde {w}_{n-1,2}, \] which illustrates their structural connection to complementary Bell numbers. We also introduce a polynomial expansion for these numbers and explore their connections with exponential polynomials, geometric polynomials, and Bernoulli numbers. These relationships facilitate the derivation of closed-form expressions for certain finite summations involving Stirling numbers of the second kind, Bernoulli numbers, and binomial coefficients, articulated through partial derangement numbers.

A Random-Player Game and Derangement Numbers
Consider the following game between a random player R and a deterministic player D. There is a pile of n elements at the beginning. The rules for playing are as follows: In each turn of R, if the pile contains exactly m elements, R removes k elements from the pile, where k is independently identically distributed from {1, . . . , m}. In each turn of D, D removes only one element. The winner is the player that, at the end of its round, has no elements remaining. R starts first to play. This short paper shows that Dn, which is defined as the probability of D winning the game (when is initialized with n elements), approaches 1/e when n increases; and more specifically, Dn = dn/n!, where dn is the n-th derangement number.

Backward Touchard congruence
Published • View PublicationBIB
The celebrated Touchard congruence states that $B_{n+p}B_n+B_{n+1}$ modulo $p$, where $p$ is a prime number and $B_n$ denotes the Bell number. In this paper we study divisibility properties of $B_{n-p}$ and their generalizations involving higher powers of $p$ as well as the $r$-Bell numbers. In particular, we show a closely relation of the considered problem to the Sun-Zagier congruence, which is additionally improved by deriving \mbox{a new} relation between $r$-Bell and derangement numbers. Finally, we conclude some results on the period of the Bell numbers modulo $p$.

This paper presents a number of identities for Dirichlet series and series with Stirling numbers of the first kind. As coefficients for the Dirichlet series we use Cauchy numbers of the first and second kinds, hyperharmonic numbers, derangement numbers, binomial coefficients, central binomial coefficients, and Catalan numbers.

Derangements and Continued Fractions for $e$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Several continued fraction expansions for $e$ have been produced by an automated conjecture generator (ACG) called \emph{The Ramanujan Machine}. Some of these were already known, some have recently been proved and some remain unproven. While an ACG can produce interesting putative results, it gives very limited insight into their significance. In this paper, we derive an elegant continued fraction expansion, equivalent to a result from the Ramanujan Machine, using the sequence of ratios of factorials to subfactorials or derangement numbers.

Combinatorial proof of the log-convexity for the derangements in the Coxeter groups
We provide the combinatorial proofs of the log-convexity for the derangement numbers in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, hyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{B}_n$, and the demihyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{D}_n$. We also show that the sequences of the even and odd derangement numbers in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and $\mathfrak{B}_n$ are log-convex.

A new extension of the Sun-Zagier result involving Bell numbers and derangement numbers
Let $p$ be any prime and let $a$ and $n$ be positive integers with $p\nmid n$. We show that $$\sum_{k=1}^{p^a-1}\frac{B_k}{(-n)^k}\equiv a(-1)^{n-1}D_{n-1}\pmod {p},$$ where $B_0,B_1,\ldots$ are the Bell numbers and $D_0,D_1,\ldots$ are the derangement numbers. This extends a result of Sun and Zagier published in 2011. Furthermore, we prove that $$(-x)^n\sum_{k=1}^{p^a-1}\frac{B_k(x)}{(-n)^k}\equiv -\sum_{r=1}^ax^{p^r}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{(n-1)!}{k!}(-x)^k\pmod{p\mathbb Z_p[x]},$$ where $B_k(x)=\sum_{l=0}^kS(k,l)x^l$ is the Bell polynomial of degree $k$ with $S(k,l)\ (0\le l\le k)$ the Stirling numbers of the second kind, and $\mathbb Z_p$ is the ring of all $p$-adic integers.

A simple bijective proof of a familiar derangement recurrence
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that the derangement numbers $d_n$, which count permutations of length $n$ with no fixed points, satisfy the recurrence $d_n=nd_{n-1}+(-1)^n$ for $n\ge1$. Combinatorial proofs of this formula have been given by Remmel, Wilf, Désarménien and Benjamin--Ornstein. Here we present yet another, arguably simpler, bijective proof.

The $r$-derangement numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical derangement numbers count fixed point-free permutations. In this paper we study the enumeration problem of generalized derangements, when some of the elements are restricted to be in distinct cycles in the cycle decomposition. We find exact formula, combinatorial relations for these numbers as well as analytic and asymptotic description. Moreover, we study deeper number theoretical properties, like modularity, $p$-adic valuations, and diophantine problems.

Refinements of the Bell and Stirling numbers
We introduce new refinements of the Bell, factorial, and unsigned Stirling numbers of the first and second kind that unite the derangement, involution, associated factorial, associated Bell, incomplete Stirling, restricted factorial, restricted Bell, and $r$-derangement numbers (and probably more!). By combining methods from analytic combinatorics, umbral calculus, and probability theory, we derive several recurrence relations and closed form expressions for these numbers. By specializing our results to the classical case, we recover explicit formulae for the Bell and Stirling numbers as sums over compositions.

Generalized K-Shift Forbidden Substrings in Permutations
In this note we continue the analysis of permutations that avoid substrings j(j+k), 1 <= j <= n-k, k < n, as well as substrings j(j+k) (mod n), 1 <= j <= n. In the first case the number of such permutations can be obtained from recursions starting from derangement numbers, while in the (mod n) case the number of permutations depends on whether n is prime, and more generally, on whether n and k are relatively prime.

Forbidden Patterns and the Alternating Derangement Sequence
In this note we count linear arrangements that avoid certain patterns and show their connection to the derangement numbers. We discuss the sequence Dn, which counts linear arrangements that avoid patterns 12, 23, ..., (n-1)n, n1, and show that this sequence almost follows the derangement sequence itself since the number of its odd terms is one more than the derangement numbers while the number of its even terms is one less. We also express the derangement numbers in terms of these and other arrangements.

Pattern-Avoiding Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two well-known polytopes whose vertices are indexed by permutations in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ are the permutohedron $P_n$ and the Birkhoff polytope $B_n$. We consider polytopes $P_n(Π)$ and $B_n(Π)$, whose vertices correspond to the permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ avoiding a set of patterns $Π$. For various choices of $Π$, we explore the Ehrhart polynomials and $h^*$-vectors of these polytopes as well as other aspects of their combinatorial structure. For $P_n(Π)$, we consider all subsets $Π\subseteq \mathfrak{S}_3$ and are able to provide results in most cases. To illustrate, $P_n(123,132)$ is a Pitman-Stanley polytope, the number of interior lattice points in $P_n(132,312)$ is a derangement number, and the normalized volume of $P_n(123,231,312)$ is the number of trees on $n$ vertices. The polytopes $B_n(Π)$ seem much more difficult to analyze, so we focus on four particular choices of $Π$. First we show that the $B_n(231,321)$ is exactly the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope. Next we prove that for any $Π$ containing $\{123,312\}$ we have $h^*(B_n(Π))=1$. Finally, we study $B_n(132,312)$ and $\widetilde{B}_n(123)$, where the tilde indicates that we choose vertices corresponding to alternating permutations avoiding the pattern $123$. In both cases we use order complexes of posets and techniques from toric algebra to construct regular, unimodular triangulations of the polytopes. The posets involved turn out to be isomorphic to the lattices of Young diagrams contained in a certain shape, and this permits us to give an exact expression for the normalized volumes of the corresponding polytopes via the hook formula. Finally, Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions allows us to show that their $h^*$-vectors are symmetric and unimodal. Various questions and conjectures are presented throughout.

Frame patterns in n-cycles
In this paper, we study the distribution of the number of occurrences of the simplest frame pattern, called the $μ$ pattern, in $n$-cycles. Given an $n$-cycle $C$, we say that a pair $\langle i,j \rangle$ matches the $μ$ pattern if $i < j$ and as we traverse around $C$ in a clockwise direction starting at $i$ and ending at $j$, we never encounter a $k$ with $i < k < j$. We say that $ \langle i,j \rangle$ is a nontrivial $μ$-match if $i+1 < j$. Also, an $n$-cycle $C$ is incontractible if there is no $i$ such that $i+1$ immediately follows $i$ in $C$. We show that the number of incontractible $n$-cycles in the symmetric group $S_n$ is $D_{n-1}$, where $D_n$ is the number of derangements in $S_n$. Further, we prove that the number of $n$-cycles in $S_n$ with exactly $k$ $μ$-matches can be expressed as a linear combination of binomial coefficients of the form $\binom{n-1}{i}$ where $i \leq 2k+1$. We also show that the generating function $NTI_{n,μ}(q)$ of $q$ raised to the number of nontrivial $μ$-matches in $C$ over all incontractible $n$-cycles in $S_n$ is a new $q$-analogue of $D_{n-1}$, which is different from the $q$-analogues of the derangement numbers that have been studied by Garsia and Remmel and by Wachs. We show that there is a rather surprising connection between the charge statistic on permutations due to Lascoux and Schüzenberger and our polynomials in that the coefficient of the smallest power of $q$ in $NTI_{2k+1,μ}(q)$ is the number of permutations in $S_{2k+1}$ whose charge path is a Dyck path. Finally, we show that $NTI_{n,μ}(q)|_{q^{\binom{n-1}{2} -k}}$ and $NT_{n,μ}(q)|_{q^{\binom{n-1}{2} -k}}$ are the number of partitions of $k$ for sufficiently large $n$.

Higher order log-monotonicity of combinatorial sequences
A sequence $\{z_n\}_{n\geq0}$ is called ratio log-convex in the sense that the ratio sequence $\{\frac{z_{n+1}}{z_n}\}_{n\geq0}$ is log-convex. Based on a three-term recurrence for sequences, we develop techniques for dealing with the ratio log-convexity of ratio sequences. As applications, we prove that the ratio sequences of numbers, including the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, Franel numbers and the Domb numbers are ratio log-convex, respectively. Finally, we not only prove that the sequence of derangement numbers is asymptotically infinitely log-monotonic, but also show some infinite log-monotonicity of some numbers related to the Gamma function, in particular, implying two results of Chen {\it et al.} on the infinite log-monotonicity of the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients.

Monotonicity and log-behavior of some functions related to the Euler Gamma function
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to develop analytic techniques to deal with certain monotonicity of combinatorial sequences. (1) A criterion for the monotonicity of the function $\sqrt[x]{f(x)}$ is given, which is a continuous analog for one result of Wang and Zhu. (2) The log-behavior of the functions $θ(x)=\sqrt[x]{2 ζ(x)Γ(x+1)}$ and $F(x)=\sqrt[x]{\frac{Γ(ax+b+1)}{Γ(c x+d+1)Γ(e x+f+1)}}$ is considered, where $ζ(x)$ and $Γ(x)$ are the Riemann zeta function and the Euler Gamma function, respectively. As consequences, the strict log-concavities of the function $θ(x)$ (a conjecture of Chen {\it et al.}) and $\{\sqrt[n]{z_n}\}$ for some combinatorial sequences (including the Bernoulli numbers, the Tangent numbers, the Catalan numbers, the Fuss-Catalan numbers and some Binomial coefficients) are demonstrated. In particular, this contains some results of Chen {\it et al.}, Luca and Stănică. (3). By researching logarithmically complete monotonicity of some functions, the infinite log-monotonicity of the sequence $\{\frac{(n_{0}+ia)!}{(k_0+ib)!(\overline{k_0}+i\overline{b})!}\}_{i\geq0}$ is proved. This generalizes two results of Chen {\it et al.} that both the Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$ and central binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$ are infinitely log-monotonic and strengths one result of Su and Wang that $\binom{dn}{δn}$ is log-convex in $n$. (4) The asymptotically infinite log-monotonicity of derangement numbers is showed. (5)The logarithmically complete monotonicity of functions $1/\sqrt[x]{a ζ(x+b)Γ(x+c)}$ and $\sqrt[x]{ρ\prod_{i=1}^n\frac{Γ(x+a_i)}{Γ(x+b_i)}}$ is also obtained, which generalizes the results of Lee and Tepedelenlioǧlu, Qi and Li.
Infinitely Log-monotonic Combinatorial Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of infinitely log-monotonic sequences. By establishing a connection between completely monotonic functions and infinitely log-monotonic sequences, we show that the sequences of the Bernoulli numbers, the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients are infinitely log-monotonic. In particular, if a sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is log-monotonic of order two, then it is ratio log-concave in the sense that the sequence $\{a_{n+1}/a_{n}\}_{n\geq 0}$ is log-concave. Furthermore, we prove that if a sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\geq k}$ is ratio log-concave, then the sequence $\{\sqrt[n]{a_n}\}_{n\geq k}$ is strictly log-concave subject to a certain initial condition. As consequences, we show that the sequences of the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, the central Delannoy numbers, the numbers of tree-like polyhexes and the Domb numbers are ratio log-concave. For the case of the Domb numbers $D_n$, we confirm a conjecture of Sun on the log-concavity of the sequence $\{\sqrt[n]{D_n}\}_{n\geq 1}$.
