A unified planar network approach to total positivity of combinatorial matrices and real-rootedness of polynomials
We present a common sufficient condition for the total positivity of combinatorial triangles and their reversals, as well as the real-rootedness of generating functions of the rows. The proof technique is to construct a unified planar network that represent the matrix, its reversal, and the Toeplitz matrices of rows, respectively, when selecting different sets of sources and sinks. These results can be applied to the exponential Riordan arrays, the iteration matrices and the $n$-recursive matrices. As consequences, we prove the total positivity and real-rootedness properties associated to many well-known combinatorial numbers, including the Stirling numbers of both kinds (of type A and type B), the Lah numbers, the idempotent numbers, the Delannoy numbers, and the derangement numbers of type A and type B.

Semi-Random Graphs, Robust Asymmetry, and Reconstruction
The Graph Reconstruction Conjecture famously posits that any undirected graph on at least three vertices is determined up to isomorphism by its family of (unlabeled) induced subgraphs. At present, the conjecture admits partial resolutions of two types: 1) casework-based demonstrations of reconstructibility for families of graphs satisfying certain structural properties, and 2) probabilistic arguments establishing reconstructibility of random graphs by leveraging average-case phenomena. While results in the first category capture the worst-case nature of the conjecture, they play a limited role in understanding the general case. Results in the second category address much larger graph families, but it remains unclear how heavily the necessary arguments rely on optimistic distributional properties. Drawing on the perspectives of smoothed and semi-random analysis, we study the robustness of what are arguably the two most fundamental properties in this latter line of work: asymmetry and uniqueness of subgraphs. Notably, we find that various semi-random graph distributions exhibit these properties asymptotically, much like their Erdős-Rényi counterparts. In particular, Bollobás (1990) demonstrated that almost all Erdős-Rényi random graphs $G = (V, E) \sim \mathscr{G}(n, p)$ enjoy the property that their induced subgraphs on $n - Θ(1)$ vertices are asymmetric and mutually non-isomorphic, for $1 - p, p = Ω(\log(n) / n)$. We show that this property is robust against perturbation -- even when an adversary is permitted to add/remove each vertex pair in $V^{(2)}$ with (independent) arbitrarily large constant probability. Exploiting this result, we derive asymptotic characterizations of asymmetry in random graphs with planted structure and bounded adversarial corruptions, along with improved bounds on the probability mass of nonreconstructible graphs in $\mathscr{G}(n, p)$.
Testing Sumsets is Hard
A subset $S$ of the Boolean hypercube $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is a sumset if $S = \{a + b : a, b\in A\}$ for some $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_2^n$. Sumsets are central objects of study in additive combinatorics, featuring in several influential results. We prove a lower bound of $Ω(2^{n/2})$ for the number of queries needed to test whether a Boolean function $f:\mathbb{F}_2^n \to \{0,1\}$ is the indicator function of a sumset. Our lower bound for testing sumsets follows from sharp bounds on the related problem of shift testing, which may be of independent interest. We also give a near-optimal $2^{n/2} \cdot \mathrm{poly}(n)$-query algorithm for a smoothed analysis formulation of the sumset refutation problem.

Total positivity of some polynomial matrices that enumerate labeled trees and forests. II. Rooted labeled trees and partial functional digraphs

We study three combinatorial models for the lower-triangular matrix with entries $t_{n,k} = \binom{n}{k} n^{n-k}$: two involving rooted trees on the vertex set $[n+1]$, and one involving partial functional digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$. We show that this matrix is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. We then generalize to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,z)$ that count improper and proper edges, and further to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,\mathbfφ)$ in infinitely many indeterminates that give a weight $y$ to each improper edge and a weight $m! \, φ_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $\mathbfφ$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.

We exhibit a lower-triangular matrix of polynomials $T(a,c,d,e,f,g)$ in six indeterminates that appears empirically to be coefficientwise totally positive, and which includes as a special case the Eulerian triangle. We prove the coefficientwise total positivity of $T(a,c,0,e,0,0)$, which includes the reversed Stirling subset triangle.

Inertia indices and eigenvalue inequalities for Hermitian matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a characterization of eigenvalue inequalities between two Hermitian matrices by means of inertia indices. As applications, we deal with some classical eigenvalue inequalities for Hermitian matrices, including the Cauchy interlacing theorem and the Weyl inequality, in a simple and unified approach. We also give a common generalization of eigenvalue inequalities for (Hermitian) normalized Laplacian matrices of simple (signed, weighted, directed) graphs. Our approach is also suitable for Hermitian matrices of the second kind of digraphs recently introduced by Mohar.

Total positivity of recursive matrices

Let $A=[a_{n,k}]_{n,k\ge 0}$ be an infinite lower triangular matrix defined by the recurrence $$a_{0,0}=1,\quad a_{n+1,k}=r_{k}a_{n,k-1}+s_{k}a_{n,k}+t_{k+1}a_{n,k+1},$$ where $a_{n,k}=0$ unless $n\ge k\ge 0$ and $r_k,s_k,t_k$ are all nonnegative. Many well-known combinatorial triangles are such matrices, including the Pascal triangle, the Stirling triangle (of the second kind), the Bell triangle, the Catalan triangles of Aigner and Shapiro. We present some sufficient conditions such that the recursive matrix $A$ is totally positive. As applications we give the total positivity of the above mentioned combinatorial triangles in a unified approach.

Addition is exponentially harder than counting for shallow monotone circuits
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $U_{k,N}$ denote the Boolean function which takes as input $k$ strings of $N$ bits each, representing $k$ numbers $a^{(1)},\dots,a^{(k)}$ in $\{0,1,\dots,2^{N}-1\}$, and outputs 1 if and only if $a^{(1)} + \cdots + a^{(k)} \geq 2^N.$ Let THR$_{t,n}$ denote a monotone unweighted threshold gate, i.e., the Boolean function which takes as input a single string $x \in \{0,1\}^n$ and outputs $1$ if and only if $x_1 + \cdots + x_n \geq t$. We refer to circuits that are composed of THR gates as monotone majority circuits. The main result of this paper is an exponential lower bound on the size of bounded-depth monotone majority circuits that compute $U_{k,N}$. More precisely, we show that for any constant $d \geq 2$, any depth-$d$ monotone majority circuit computing $U_{d,N}$ must have size $\smash{2^{Ω(N^{1/d})}}$. Since $U_{k,N}$ can be computed by a single monotone weighted threshold gate (that uses exponentially large weights), our lower bound implies that constant-depth monotone majority circuits require exponential size to simulate monotone weighted threshold gates. This answers a question posed by Goldmann and Karpinski (STOC'93) and recently restated by Hastad (2010, 2014). We also show that our lower bound is essentially best possible, by constructing a depth-$d$, size-$2^{O(N^{1/d})}$ monotone majority circuit for $U_{d,N}$. As a corollary of our lower bound, we significantly strengthen a classical theorem in circuit complexity due to Ajtai and Gurevich (JACM'87). They exhibited a monotone function that is in AC$^0$ but requires super-polynomial size for any constant-depth monotone circuit composed of unbounded fan-in AND and OR gates. We describe a monotone function that is in depth-$3$ AC$^0$ but requires exponential size monotone circuits of any constant depth, even if the circuits are composed of THR gates.
Generalized Fibonacci polynomials and Fibonomial coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
The focus of this paper is the study of generalized Fibonacci polynomials and Fibonomial coefficients. The former are polynomials {n} in variables s and t given by {0} = 0, {1} = 1, and {n} = s{n-1}+t{n-2} for n ge 2. The latter are defined by {n choose k} = {n}!/({k}!{n-k}!) where {n}! = {1}{2}...{n}. These quotients are also polynomials in s and t, and specializations give the ordinary binomial coefficients, the Fibonomial coefficients, and the q-binomial coefficients. We present some of their fundamental properties, including a more general recursion for {n}, an analogue of the binomial theorem, a new proof of the Euler-Cassini identity in this setting with applications to estimation of tails of series, and valuations when s and t take on integral values. We also study a corresponding analogue of the Catalan numbers. Conjectures and open problems are scattered throughout the paper.

The fractal nature of the Fibonomial triangle
It is well known that Pascal's triangle exhibits fractal behavior when reduced modulo a prime. We show that the triangle of Fibonomial coefficients has a similar nature modulo two. Specifically, for any $m \ge 0$, the subtriangle consisting of the first $3 \cdot 2^m$ rows is duplicated on the left and right sides of the next $3 \cdot 2^m$ rows, with an inverted triangle of zeros in between. We give three proofs of this fact. The first uses a combinatorial interpretation of the Fibonomials due to Sagan and Savage. The second employs an analogue of Lucas' congruence for the parity of binomial coefficients. The final one is inductive. We also use induction to show that the Fibonomial triangle has a similar structure modulo three. We end with some open questions.
