Inversion-descent enumerators of $\underline{32}1$-avoiding permutations
We give the recurrence relation for counting polynomials for permutations avoiding the $\321$ vincular pattern, with respect to inversion numbers and descent numbers, and consequently give the $q$-exponential generating function for these counting polynomials. Furthermore, we give another explanation for these counting polynomials in terms of restricted-growth words.
Classical and vincular patterns of length three in generalized alternating permutations
Let k be an integer at least 2, and let D_{N,k} be the set of permutations of {1,...,N} whose descent set is exactly {k, 2k, ..., k*floor((N-1)/k)}. We enumerate the elements of D_{N,k} avoiding each classical and each vincular pattern of length three. For classical patterns, we give recursive bijections from the 132- and 231-avoiding classes to ordered forests of complete k-ary trees, obtaining the Raney number. The 213- and 312-avoiding classes are obtained from these forest bijections by completing the last block and applying reverse-complement symmetry. The remaining classical case 321 is expressed by RSK. For vincular patterns, we enumerate the six fully consecutive patterns and the twelve patterns with exactly one adjacency. The closed-form results are accompanied by bijective models: the Catalan, Raney, Fuss-Catalan, and RSK cases are natural k-ary or fixed-descent extensions of classical bijections, while the product and poset cases arise from block-insertion and record/tree-poset encodings forced by the adjacency conditions.

Lehmer Codes and the Reverse-Complement Mapping from (32-1)-Avoiding Permutations to (3-21)-Avoiding Permutations
Let $S_n(32\text{-}1)$ and $S_n(3\text{-}21)$ denote the sets of $n$-permutations avoiding the vincular patterns $32\text{-}1$ and $3\text{-}21$, respectively. Using Lehmer codes, we realize these families as weighted posets $L_n(32\text{-}1)$ and $L_n(3\text{-}21)$, where the weight of a code is the inversion number of its permutation. We show that the maximal elements of each of these posets, $\operatorname{Max} L_n(32\text{-}1)$ and $\operatorname{Max} L_n(3\text{-}21)$, are enumerated by the Fibonacci numbers. We demonstrate that the classical reverse-complement map on permutations restricts to a natural bijection between these two sets of maximal elements, revealing a deep symmetry between their underlying poset structures.

Arrow pattern avoidance in permutations: structure and enumeration
Arrow patterns were introduced by Berman and Tenner as a generalization of vincular patterns. They observed that arrow patterns have the potential to bridge the divide between a permutation's cycle notation and its one-line notation; in support of this, they used arrow avoidance to enumerate shallow and cyclic shallow permutations. More recently, $321$-avoiding cyclic permutations were recharacterized entirely in terms of arrow avoidance. Motivated by these results, we initiate a systematic study of arrow avoidance. In this paper, we prove structural results about arrow patterns, including defining arrow-Wilf equivalence, and enumerate several arrow avoidance classes. Finally, we consider the avoidance of pairs of arrow patterns, focusing on cases that prohibit fixed points in the underlying permutation.

An involution for trivariate symmetries of vincular patterns
We provide a bijective proof of the equidistribution of two pairs of vincular patterns in permutations, thereby resolving a recent open problem of Bitonti, Deb, and Sokal (arXiv:2412.10214). Since the bijection is involutive, we also confirm their conjecture on the equidistribution of triple vincular patterns. Somewhat unexpectedly, we show that this involution is closed on the set of Baxter permutations, thereby implying another trivariate symmetries of vincular patterns. The proof of this second result requires a variant of a characterization of Baxter permutations in terms of restricted Laguerre histories, first given by Viennot using the Françon-Viennot bijection.

Characterizing avoidance in cycles via vincular patterns
We show that cyclic permutations avoiding $321$ are precisely those permutations whose image under the fundamental bijection avoid a set of vincular patterns. We do this by using pattern functions and arrow patterns, in combination with the characterization of $321$ avoidance in terms of equality of the upper bound of the Daiconis-Graham inequalities. We then explore some consequences of this result, including upper and lower bound results on the growth rate of $321$ avoiding cycles.

Avoidance of vincular patterns by flattened derangements
In this paper, we consider the problem of avoiding a single vincular pattern of length three by derangements in the flattened sense and find explicit formulas for the generating functions enumerating members of each corresponding avoidance class according to the number of cycles. We make frequent use of the kernel method in solving the functional equations that arise which are satisfied by these (ordinary) generating functions. In the case of avoiding 23-1, which is equivalent to 32-1 in the flattened sense, it is more convenient to consider the exponential generating function instead due to the form of the recurrence. This leads to an explicit expression for the distribution of the number of cycles in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind and the determinant of a certain tridiagonal matrix. Finally, the cases of 3-12 and 3-21 are perhaps the most difficult of all, and here we make use of a pair of auxiliary statistics in order to find a system of recurrences that enumerate each avoidance class.

Higher dimensional floorplans and Baxter d-permutations
A $2-$dimensional mosaic floorplan is a partition of a rectangle by other rectangles with no empty rooms. These partitions (considered up to some deformations) are known to be in bijection with Baxter permutations. A $d$-floorplan is the generalisation of mosaic floorplans in higher dimensions, and a $d$-permutation is a $(d-1)$-tuple of permutations. Recently, in N. Bonichon and P.-J. Morel, {\it J. Integer Sequences} 25 (2022), Baxter $d$-permutations generalising the usual Baxter permutations were introduced. In this paper, we consider mosaic floorplans in arbitrary dimensions, and we construct a generating tree for $d$-floorplans, which generalises the known generating tree structure for $2$-floorplans. The corresponding labels and rewriting rules appear to be significantly more involved in higher dimensions. Moreover we give a bijection between the $2^{d-1}$-floorplans and $d$-permutations characterized by forbidden vincular patterns. Surprisingly, this set of $d$-permutations is strictly contained within the set of Baxter $d$-permutations.

Joint equidistributions of mesh patterns 123 and 321 with symmetric and minus-antipodal shadings
In this paper, we extend recent results by Lv and Kitaev by proving 20 (out of 22 possible) joint equidistributions of mesh patterns 123 and 321 with symmetric shadings, as well as all 36 joint equidistributions of these patterns with minus-antipodal shadings. Our results link several joint equidistributions of mesh patterns to various integer sequences, including unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind, harmonic numbers, and the numbers of inversion sequences avoiding a certain vincular pattern studied by Lin and Yan.

Thron-type continued fractions (T-fractions) for some classes of increasing trees
We introduce some classes of increasing labeled and multilabeled trees, and we show that these trees provide combinatorial interpretations for certain Thron-type continued fractions with coefficients that are quasi-affine of period 2. Our proofs are based on bijections from trees to labeled Motzkin or Schröder paths; these bijections extend the well-known bijection of Françon--Viennot (1979) interpreted in terms of increasing binary trees. This work can also be viewed as a sequel to the recent work of Elvey Price and Sokal (2020), where they provide combinatorial interpretations for Thron-type continued fractions with coefficients that are affine. Towards the end of the paper, we conjecture an equidistribution of vincular patterns on permutations.

Stack-sorting with Stacks Avoiding Vincular Patterns
We introduce the stack-sorting map $\text{SC}_σ$ that sorts, in a right-greedy manner, an input permutation through a stack that avoids some vincular pattern $σ$. The stack-sorting maps of Cerbai et al. in which the stack avoids a pattern classically and Defant and Zheng in which the stack avoids a pattern consecutively follow as special cases. We first characterize and enumerate the sorting class $\text{Sort}(\text{SC}_σ)$, the set of permutations sorted by $s\circ\text{SC}_σ$, for seven length $3$ patterns $σ$. We also decide when $\text{Sort}(\text{SC}_σ)$ is a permutation class. Next, we compute $\max_{π\in \mathfrak S_n}|\text{SC}_σ^{-1}(π)|$ and characterize the periodic points of $\text{SC}_σ$ for several length $3$ patterns $σ$. We end with several conjectures and open problems.

Pattern containment in random permutations
This paper studies permutation statistics that count occurrences of patterns. Their expected values on a product of $t$ permutations chosen randomly from $Γ\subseteq S_{n}$, where $Γ$ is a union of conjugacy classes, are considered. Hultman has described a method for computing such an expected value, denoted $\mathbb{E}_Γ(s,t)$, of a statistic $s$, when $Γ$ is a union of conjugacy classes of $S_{n}$. The only prerequisite is that the mean of $s$ over the conjugacy classes is written as a linear combination of irreducible characters of $S_{n}$. Therefore, the main focus of this article is to express the means of pattern-counting statistics as such linear combinations. A procedure for calculating such expressions for statistics counting occurrences of classical and vincular patterns of length 3 is developed, and is then used to calculate all these expressions. The results can be used to compute $\mathbb{E}_Γ(s,t)$ for all the above statistics, and for all functions on $S_{n}$ that are linear combinations of them.

Avoidance of vincular patterns by Catalan words
Let $\mathcal{C}_n$ denote the set of words $w=w_1\cdots w_n$ on the alphabet of positive integers satisfying $w_{i+1}\leq w_i+1$ for $1 \leq i \leq n-1$ with $w_1=1$. The members of $\mathcal{C}_n$ are known as Catalan words and are enumerated by the $n$-th Catalan number $C_n$. The problem of finding the cardinality of various avoidance classes of $\mathcal{C}_n$ has been an ongoing object of study, and members of $\mathcal{C}_n$ avoiding one or two classical or a single consecutive pattern have been enumerated. In this paper, we extend these results to vincular patterns and seek to determine the cardinality of each avoidance class corresponding to a pattern of type (1,2) or (2,1). In several instances, a simple explicit formula for this cardinality may be given. In the more difficult cases, we find only a formula for the (ordinary) generating function which enumerates the class in question. We make extensive use of functional equations in establishing our generating function results.

Mahonian Statistics and Vincular Patterns on Permutations over Multisets
Most Mahonian statistics can be expressed as a linear combination of vincular patterns. This is not only true with statistics on the permutation set, but it can also be applied for statistics on the permutation with repetition set. By following the method extending the vincular patterns combinations presented by Kitaev and Vajnovszki, we discover 8 vincular-patterns combinations of mad and madl extensions that are possible to be Mahonian. Some of these have been proved to be Mahonian on repetitive permutations by Clarke, Steingrimsson and Zeng, while the rest are new statistics extensions. In this thesis, we determine combinations of vincular pattern extension of mad and madl in Clarke, Steingrimsson and Zeng s paper, which have been proved to be Mahonian on the repetitive permutations. This result will be used to support the proof of Mahonity of the new statistics extensions. We show that these new statistics extensions are also Mahonian by constructing an involution Φ on repetitive permutations, which preserves the descents statistics and transforms new statistics extensions to Mahonian mad and madl extensions of Clarke.

Asymptotic normality of pattern counts in conjugacy classes
We prove, under mild conditions on fixed points and two cycles, the asymptotic normality of vincular pattern counts for a permutation chosen uniformly at random in a conjugacy class.Additionally, we prove that the limiting variance is always non-degenerate for classical pattern counts. The proof uses weighted dependency graphs.

Thresholds for patterns in random permutations with a given number of inversions
We explore how the asymptotic structure of a random permutation of $[n]$ with $m$ inversions evolves, as $m$ increases, establishing thresholds for the appearance and disappearance of any classical, consecutive or vincular pattern. The threshold for the appearance of a classical pattern depends on the greatest number of inversions in any of its sum indecomposable components.

Enumerating pattern-avoiding permutations by leading terms
The number of 123-avoiding permutation on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ with a fixed leading terms is counted by the ballot numbers. The same holds for $132$-avoiding permutations. These results were proved by Miner and Pak using the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence to connect permutations with Dyck paths. In this paper, we first provide an alternate proof of these enumeration results via a direct counting argument. We then study the number of pattern-avoiding permutations with a fixed prefix of length $t\geq1$, generalizing the $t=1$ case. We find exact expressions for single and pairs of patterns of length three as well as the pair $3412$ and $3421$. These expressions depend on $t$, the extrema, and the order statistics. We also define $r$-Wilf equivalence for permutations with a single fixed leading term $r$, and classify the $r$-Wilf-equivalence classes for both classical and vincular patterns of length three.

Hopf Algebra on Vincular Permutation Patterns
We introduce a new Hopf algebra that operates on pairs of finite interval partitions and permutations of equal length. This algebra captures vincular patterns, which involve specifying both the permutation patterns and the consecutive occurrence of values. Our motivation stems from linear functionals that encode the number of occurrences of these patterns, and we show that they behave well with respect to the operations of this Hopf algebra.

Baxter $d$-permutations and other pattern avoiding classes
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 25: Article 22.8.3, 2022 • Search Publication
A permutation of size $n$ can be identified to its diagram in which there is exactly one point per row and column in the grid $[n]^2$. In this paper we consider multidimensional permutations (or $d$-permutations), which are identified to their diagrams on the grid $[n]^d$ in which there is exactly one point per hyperplane $x_i=j$ for $i\in[d]$ and $j\in[n]$. We first investigate exhaustively all small pattern avoiding classes. We provide some bijection to enumerate some of these classes and we propose some conjectures for others. We then give a generalization of well-studied Baxter permutations into this multidimensional setting. In addition, we provide a vincular pattern avoidance characterization of Baxter $d$-permutations.

Enumerating circular permutations avoiding the vincular pattern 23 4 1
In this paper, we find an explicit formula for the generating function that counts the circular permutations of length n avoiding the pattern 23 4 1 whose enumeration was raised as an open problem by Rupert Li. This then completes in all cases the enumeration of circular permutations that avoid a single vincular pattern of length four containing one vinculum. To establish our results, we introduce three auxiliary arrays which when taken together refine the cardinality of the class of permutations in question. Rewriting the recurrences of these arrays in terms of generating functions leads to functional equations which are solved by various means including the kernel method and iteration.
