Permutations that strongly avoid 132
A permutation $π$ strongly avoids the pattern $τ$ if both $π$ and $π^2$ avoid $τ$. In this paper, we enumerate permutations of size $n$ that strongly avoid the pattern 132. This enumeration allows us to prove a conjecture that the growth rate of such permutations is 2.

Arrow pattern avoidance in permutations: structure and enumeration
Arrow patterns were introduced by Berman and Tenner as a generalization of vincular patterns. They observed that arrow patterns have the potential to bridge the divide between a permutation's cycle notation and its one-line notation; in support of this, they used arrow avoidance to enumerate shallow and cyclic shallow permutations. More recently, $321$-avoiding cyclic permutations were recharacterized entirely in terms of arrow avoidance. Motivated by these results, we initiate a systematic study of arrow avoidance. In this paper, we prove structural results about arrow patterns, including defining arrow-Wilf equivalence, and enumerate several arrow avoidance classes. Finally, we consider the avoidance of pairs of arrow patterns, focusing on cases that prohibit fixed points in the underlying permutation.

Seaweed algebras with restricted part sizes
Seaweed algebras are a class of Lie algebras that are naturally characterized by a pair of compositions, which in turn are represented visually as planar graphs called meanders. These meanders provide a straightforward method for computing the index of the associated algebra. The goal of this paper is to enumerate those seaweed algebras with a fixed index and whose associated compositions have restricted part sizes. In particular, we enumerate those with composition part sizes from so-called acyclic sets. We also establish a bijection between sets of indecomposable seaweed algebras with meanders with certain restricted part sizes and sets of permutations with restricted displacements. In certain cases, the index of the algebra can be determined by a simple statistic on the permutation.

Pattern avoidance in compositions and powers of permutations
A permutation $π$ is said to avoid a chain $(σ:τ)$ of patterns if $π$ avoids $σ$ and $π^2$ avoids $τ.$ In this paper, we define a notion of pattern avoidance for compositions of positive integers and use that idea to enumerate permutations of length $n$ that avoid the chain $(312,321:σ)$ for any pattern $σ\in \bigcup_{m\geq 1} \mathcal{S}_m$. We also enumerate those permutations that avoid the chain $(312,4321:σ)$ for any $σ\in\mathcal{S}_3.$
Generalized chip firing and critical groups of arithmetical structures on trees
Chip firing provides a way to study the sandpile group (also known as the Jacobian) of a graph. We use a generalized version of chip firing to bound the number of invariant factors of the critical group of an arithmetical structure on a graph. We also show that, under suitable hypotheses, critical groups are additive under wedge sums of graphs with arithmetical structures. These results allow us to relate the number of invariant factors of critical groups associated to any given tree to decompositions of the tree into simpler trees. We use this to classify those trees for which every arithmetical structure has cyclic critical group. Finally, we show how to construct arithmetical structures on trees with prescribed critical groups. In particular, every finite abelian group is realized as the critical group of some arithmetical structure on a tree.
Binary operations on pattern-avoiding cycles
Suppose $c_n(σ)$ denotes the number of cyclic permutations in $\mathcal{S}_n$ that avoid a pattern $σ$. In this paper, we define partial groupoid structures on cyclic pattern-avoiding permutations that allow us to build larger cyclic pattern-avoiding permutations from smaller ones. We use this structure to find recursive lower bounds on $c_n(σ)$. These bounds imply that $c_n(σ)$ has a growth rate of at least 3 for $σ\in\{231,312,321\}$ and a growth rate of at least 2.6 for $σ\in\{123,132,213\}$. In the process, we prove (and sometimes improve) a conjecture of Bóna and Cory that $c_n(σ)\geq 2 c_{n-1}(σ)$ for all $σ\in\mathcal{S}_3\setminus\{123\}$ and $n\geq 2.$

Harmonic Morphisms of Arithmetical Structures on Graphs
Let $φ\colon Γ_2 \rightarrow Γ_1$ be a harmonic morphism of connected graphs. We show that an arithmetical structure on $Γ_1$ can be pulled back via $φ$ to an arithmetical structure on $Γ_2$. We then show that some results of Baker and Norine on the critical groups for the usual Laplacian extend to arithmetical critical groups, which are abelian groups determined by the generalized Laplacian associated to these arithmetical structures. In particular, we show that the morphism $φ$ induces a surjective group homomorphism from the arithmetical critical group of $Γ_2$ to that of $Γ_1$ and an injective group homomorphism from the arithmetical critical group of $Γ_1$ to that of $Γ_2$. Finally, we prove a Riemann-Hurwitz formula for arithmetical structures.

Pattern avoidance in non-crossing and non-nesting permutations
Non-crossing and non-nesting permutations are variations of the well-known Stirling permutations. A permutation $π$ on $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots, n,n\}$ is called non-crossing if it avoids the crossing patterns $\{1212,2121\}$ and is called non-nesting if it avoids the nesting patterns $\{1221,2112\}.$ Pattern avoidance in these permutations has been considered in recent years, but it has remained open to enumerate the non-crossing and non-nesting permutations that avoid a single pattern of length 3. In this paper, we provide generating functions for those non-crossing and non-nesting permutations that avoid the pattern 231 (and, by symmetry, the patterns 132, 213, or 312).

Pattern-avoiding shallow permutations
Shallow permutations were defined in 1977 to be those that satisfy the lower bound of the Diaconis-Graham inequality. Recently, there has been renewed interest in these permutations. In particular, Berman and Tenner showed they satisfy certain pattern avoidance conditions in their cycle form and Woo showed they are exactly those whose cycle diagrams are unlinked. Shallow permutations that avoid 321 have appeared in many contexts; they are those permutations for which depth equals the reflection length, they have unimodal cycles, and they have been called Boolean permutations. Motivated by this interest in 321-avoiding shallow permutations, we investigate $σ$-avoiding shallow permutations for all $σ\in \mathcal{S}_3$. To do this, we develop more general structural results about shallow permutations, and apply them to enumerate shallow permutations avoiding any pattern of length 3.
Pattern-restricted cyclic permutations with a pattern-restricted cycle form
In this paper, we consider cyclic permutations that avoid the monotone decreasing permutation $k(k-1)\ldots 21$, whose cycle also demonstrates some pattern avoidance. If the cycle is written in standard form with 1 appearing at the beginning of the cycle and the standard form avoids a pattern of length 3, we find answers in terms of continued fraction generating functions. We also consider the case that every cyclic rotation of the cycle form of the permutation avoids a pattern of length 4 and enumerate two such cases.

Pattern avoidance and the fundamental bijection
The fundamental bijection is a bijection $θ:\mathcal{S}_n\to\mathcal{S}_n$ in which one uses the standard cycle form of one permutation to obtain another permutation in one-line form. In this paper, we enumerate the set of permutations $π\in \mathcal{S}_n$ that avoids a pattern $σ\in \mathcal{S}_3$, whose image $θ(π)$ also avoids $σ$. We additionally consider what happens under repeated iterations of $θ$; in particular, we enumerate permutations $π\in \mathcal{S}_n$ that have the property that $π$ and its first $k$ iterations under $θ$ all avoid a pattern $σ$. Finally, we consider permutations with the property that $π=θ^2(π)$ that avoid a given pattern $σ$, and end the paper with some directions for future study.

Descents in powers of permutations
We consider a few special cases of the more general question: How many permutations $π\in\mathcal{S}_n$ have the property that $π^2$ has $j$ descents for some $j$? In this paper, we first enumerate Grassmannian permutations $π$ by the number of descents in $π^2$. We then consider all permutations whose square has exactly one descent, fully enumerating when the descent is "small" and providing a lower bound in the general case. Finally, we enumerate permutations whose square or cube has the maximum number of descents, and finish the paper with a few future directions for study.

Pattern-restricted permutations of small order
We enumerate 132-avoiding permutations of order 3 in terms of the Catalan and Motzkin generating functions, answering a question of Bóna and Smith from 2019. We also enumerate 231-avoiding permutations that are composed only of 3-cycles, 2-cycles, and fixed points.

Powers of permutations that avoid chains of patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Bona and Smith define the notion of \textit{strong avoidance}, in which a permutation and its square both avoid a given pattern. In this paper, we generalize this idea to what we call \textit{chain avoidance}. We say that a permutation avoids a chain of patterns $(τ_1 : τ_2: \cdots : τ_k)$ if the $i$-th power of the permutation avoids the pattern $τ_i$. We enumerate the set of permutations $π$ which avoid the chain $(213, 312 : τ)$, i.e.,~unimodal permutations whose square avoids $τ$, for $τ\in §_3$ and use this to find a lower bound on the number of permutations that avoid the chain $(312: τ)$ for $τ\in §_3$. We finish the paper by discussing permutations that avoid longer chains.
Cyclic permutations avoiding patterns in both one-line and cycle forms
Let $σ$ and $τ$ be patterns of length three; that is $σ, τ\in \{123,132,213,231,312,321\}$. In this paper, we enumerate the set of cyclic permutations in $\mathcal{S}_n$ that avoid $σ$ in their one-line notation and another pattern $τ$ in their cycle notation.
Critical groups of arithmetical structures on star graphs and complete graphs
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 31 (2024) 1.5 • View PublicationBIB
An arithmetical structure on a finite, connected graph without loops is an assignment of positive integers to the vertices that satisfies certain conditions. Associated to each of these is a finite abelian group known as its critical group. We show how to determine the critical group of an arithmetical structure on a star graph or complete graph in terms of the entries of the arithmetical structure. We use this to investigate which finite abelian groups can occur as critical groups of arithmetical structures on these graphs.

A new statistic on Dyck paths for counting 3-dimensional Catalan words
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 3-dimensional Catalan word is a word on three letters so that the subword on any two letters is a Dyck path. For a given Dyck path $D$, a recently defined statistic counts the number of Catalan words with the property that any subword on two letters is exactly $D$. In this paper, we enumerate Dyck paths with this statistic equal to certain values, including all primes. The formulas obtained are in terms of Motzkin numbers and Motzkin ballot numbers.

Pattern-restricted permutations composed of 3-cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we characterize and enumerate pattern-avoiding permutations composed of only 3-cycles. In particular, we answer the question for the six patterns of length 3. We find that the number of permutations composed of $n$ 3-cycles that avoid the pattern 231 (equivalently 312) is given by $3^{n-1}$, while the generating function for the number of those that avoid the pattern 132 (equivalently 213) is given by a formula involving the generating functions for the well-known Motzkin numbers and Catalan numbers. The number of permutations composed of $n$ 3-cycles that avoid the pattern 321 is characterized by a weighted sum involving statistics on Dyck paths of semilength~$n$.
Counting acyclic and strong digraphs by descents
Published in Discrete Math. 343 (2020), 112041 • View PublicationBIB
A descent of a labeled digraph is a directed edge (s, t) with s > t. We count strong tournaments, strong digraphs, and acyclic digraphs by descents and edges. To count strong tournaments we use Eulerian generating functions and to count strong and acyclic digraphs we use a new type of generating function that we call a graphic Eulerian generating function.
On the Intersection Numbers of Finite Groups
The covering number of a nontrivial finite group $G$, denoted $σ(G)$, is the smallest number of proper subgroups of $G$ whose set-theoretic union equals $G$. In this article, we focus on a dual problem to that of covering numbers of groups, which involves maximal subgroups of finite groups. For a nontrivial finite group $G$, we define the intersection number of $G$, denoted $ι(G)$, to be the minimum number of maximal subgroups whose intersection equals the Frattini subgroup of $G$. We elucidate some basic properties of this invariant, and give an exact formula for $ι(G)$ when $G$ is a nontrivial finite nilpotent group. In addition, we determine the intersection numbers of a few infinite families of non-nilpotent groups. We conclude by discussing a generalization of the intersection number of a nontrivial finite group and pose some open questions about these invariants.
