Decreasing Runs in Quasi-Stirling Permutations of Multisets
As a natural extension of Stirling permutations, quasi-Stirling permutations are multipermutations $π$ with the property that for any subsequence $π_{j_1}π_{j_2}π_{j_3}π_{j_4}$ satisfying $π_{j_1}=π_{j_3}$ and $π_{j_2}=π_{j_4}$, we have $π_{j_1}=π_{j_2}$. Using a bijective construction, Yan, Yang, Huang and Zhu showed that the joint distribution of ascents, descents and plateaux over quasi-Stirling permutations of a multiset $M=\{1^{k_1},2^{k_2},\ldots,n^{k_n}\}$ coincides with that over the multiset $M'=\{1^{k_1+\cdots+k_n-n+1},2,\ldots,n\}$. In this paper, we prove that the same invariance of distribution holds for decreasing runs, and consequently for all decreasing consecutive patterns. To this end, following the Yan-Yang-Huang-Zhu approach, we construct a multiplicity-redistribution bijection that preserves decreasing runs, thereby reducing the computation of joint distribution of decreasing consecutive patterns over quasi-Stirling permutations from $M$ to $M'$. Together with the classical run theorem, our bijection leads to explicit recurrence relations and generating functions for the distribution functions of these statistics over quasi-Stirling permutations.

An identity for second Eulerian numbers via lattice-point counting
The second Eulerian numbers are defined via the descent enumerator of Stirling permutations, a class of permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley. We give a simple and conceptual proof of two identities relating the Bernoulli numbers and the second Eulerian numbers. We rely on a recent Ehrhart-theoretic idea of Ferroni.
Permutation Flows I: Triangulations of Flow Polytopes (Research Announcement)
We introduce a new broadly unifying family of combinatorial objects, which we call permutation flows, associated to an acyclic directed graph $G$ together with a framing $F$. This new family is combinatorially rich and contains as special cases various families of combinatorial objects that are frequently studied in the literature, as is the case of permutations, circular permutations, multipermutations, Stirling permutations, Catalan objects and their generalizations. When permutation flows are decorated with compatible shuffles, they also include the combinatorics of parking functions and their generalizations. This model is geometrically rich. We show that permutation flow shuffles define a family of unimodular triangulations of the flow polytope $F_G(a)$ on $G$ with an integer balanced netflow vector a where only the last entry is negative. As an application we provide a new proof of the Lidskii volume formula of Baldoni and Vergne for this family of polytopes and a reformulation of the same formula where every term is explained by the nature of the combinatorial objects involved. Permutation flow triangulations extend the Danilov, Karzanov, and Koshevoy triangulations that were defined for the case where a=e_0-e_n. We provide a formula for the h^*-polynomial of the flow polytope as the descent enumerating polynomial of permutation flows. The model comes with an order structure induced by intuitive operators on permutation flows which we call the weak order. This order includes as special cases the weak order on permutations, the Tamari lattice, order ideals in Young's lattice, and their generalizations, among others. It was conjectured in 2020 by the three authors, together with Benedetti, Harris, and Morales, that this poset is in general a lattice. This conjecture has been recently established with independent proofs by Bell and Ceballos, and by Berggren and Serhiyenko.
Symmetric decompositions and Euler-Stirling statistics on Stirling permutations
The Stirling permutations introduced by Gessel-Stanley have recently received considerable attention. Motivated by Ji's work on $(α,β)$-Eulerian polynomials (Sci China Math., 2025) and Yan-Yang-Lin's work on $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2026), we present several symmetric decompositions of the enumerators related to Euler-Stirling statistics on Stirling permutations. Firstly, we provide a partial symmetric decomposition for the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomial. Secondly, we give several unexpected applications of the $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials, where $p$ marks the number of fixed points of permutations and $q$ marks that of cycles. From this paper, one can see that $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomial contains a great deal of information about permutations and Stirling permutations. Using the change of grammars, we show that the $(α,β)$-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Carlitz-Scoville can be deduced from the $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials by special parametrizations. We then introduce proper and improper ascent-plateau statistics on Stirling permutations. Moreover, we introduce proper ascent, improper ascent, proper descent and improper descent statistics on permutations. Furthermore, we consider the joint distributions of Euler-Stirling statistics on permutations, including the numbers of improper ascents, proper ascents, left-to-right minima and right-to-left minina. In the final part, we first give a symmetric decomposition of the joint distribution of the ascent-plateau and left ascent-plateau statistics, and then we show that the $q$-ascent-plateau polynomials are bi-$γ$-positive, where $q$ marks the number of left-to-right minima.

Eulerian-type polynomials over Stirling permutations and box sorting algorithm
It is well known that ascents, descents and plateaux are equidistributed over the set of classical Stirling permutations. Their common enumerative polynomials are the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which have been extensively studied by many researchers. This paper is divided into three parts. The first parts gives a convolution formula for the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which simplifies a result of Gessel. As an application, a determinantal expression for the second-order Eulerian polynomials is obtained. We then investigate the convolution formula of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials. Among other things, by introducing three new statistics: proper ascent-plateau, improper ascent-plateau and trace, we discover that a six-variable Eulerian-type polynomial over a class of restricted Stirling permutations equals a six-variable Eulerian-type polynomial over signed permutations. By special parametrizations, we make use of Stirling permutations to give a unified interpretations of the $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials and derangement polynomials of types $A$ and $B$. The third part presents a box sorting algorithm which leads to a bijection between the terms in the expansion of $(cD)^nc$ and ordered weak set partitions, where $c$ is a smooth function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. Using a map from ordered weak set partitions to standard Young tableaux, we find an expansion of $(cD)^nc$ in terms of standard Young tableaux. Combining this with grammars, we provide three interpretations of the second-order Eulerian polynomials.

Pattern avoidance in non-crossing and non-nesting permutations
Non-crossing and non-nesting permutations are variations of the well-known Stirling permutations. A permutation $π$ on $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots, n,n\}$ is called non-crossing if it avoids the crossing patterns $\{1212,2121\}$ and is called non-nesting if it avoids the nesting patterns $\{1221,2112\}.$ Pattern avoidance in these permutations has been considered in recent years, but it has remained open to enumerate the non-crossing and non-nesting permutations that avoid a single pattern of length 3. In this paper, we provide generating functions for those non-crossing and non-nesting permutations that avoid the pattern 231 (and, by symmetry, the patterns 132, 213, or 312).

Combinatorics on bi-$γ$-positivity of $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials
The $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials $A^{(k)}_{n}(x)$ were introduced as ascent polynomials over $k$-inversion sequences by Savage and Viswanathan. The bi-$γ$-positivity of the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials $A^{(k)}_{n}(x)$ was known but to give a combinatorial interpretation of the corresponding bi-$γ$-coefficients still remains open. The study of the theme of bi-$γ$-positivities from purely combinatorial aspect was proposed by Athanasiadis. In this paper, we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the bi-$γ$-coefficients of $A^{(k)}_{n}(x)$ by using the model of certain ordered labeled forests. Our combinatorial approach consists of three main steps: (i) construct a bijection between $k$-Stirling permutations and certain forests that are named increasing pruned even $k$-ary forests; (ii) introduce a generalized Foata--Strehl action on increasing pruned even $k$-ary trees which implies the longest ascent-plateau polynomials over $k$-Stirling permutations with initial letter $1$ are $γ$-positive, a result that may have independent interest; (iii) develop two crucial transformations on increasing pruned even $k$-ary forests to conclude our combinatorial interpretation.

Determinantal representations of alternating run polynomials
Based on a determinantal formula for the higher derivative of a quotient of two functions, we first present the determinantal expressions of Eulerian polynomials and Andre polynomials. In particular, we discover that the Euler number (number of alternating permutations) can be expressed as a lower Hessenberg determinant. We then investigate the determinantal representations of the up-down run polynomials and the types A and B alternating run polynomials. As applications, we deduce several new recurrence relations, which imply the multiplicity of -1 in these three kinds of polynomials. And then, we provide two determinantal representations for the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations. In particular, we discover a close connection between the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations and the type B Eulerian polynomials.

Pattern avoidance in nonnesting permutations
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 27:1, Permutation Patterns 2024, Special issues (October 17, 2025) dmtcs:14885 • View PublicationBIB
Nonnesting permutations are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid subsequences of the form $abba$ for any $a\neq b$. These permutations have recently been studied in connection to noncrossing (also called quasi-Stirling) permutations, which are those that avoid subsequences of the form $abab$, and in turn generalize the well-known Stirling permutations. Inspired by the work by Archer et al. on pattern avoidance in noncrossing permutations, we consider the analogous problem in the nonnesting case. We enumerate nonnesting permutations that avoid each set of two or more patterns of length 3, as well as those that avoid some sets of patterns of length 4. We obtain closed formulas and generating functions, some of which involve unexpected appearances of the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. Our proofs rely on decompositions, recurrences, and bijections.

Canon Permutation Posets
A permutation of the multiset $\{1^m,2^m,\dots,n^m\}$ is a {\em canon permutation} if the subsequence formed by the $j$th copy of each element of $[n]:=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ is identical for all $j\in[m]$. Canon permutations were introduced by Elizalde and are motivated by pattern-avoiding concepts such as (quasi-)Stirling permutations. He proved that the descent polynomial of canon permutations exhibits a surprising product structure; as a further consequence, it is palindromic. Our goal is to understand canon permutations from the viewpoint of Stanley's $(P,ω)$-partitions, along the way generalizing Elizalde's definition and results. We start with a labeled poset $P$ and extend it in a natural way to canon labelings of the product poset $P \times [n]$. The resulting descent polynomial has a product structure which arises naturally from the theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions and simplifies existing proofs. When $P$ is graded, this theory also implies palindromicity. We include results on weak descent polynomials, an amphibian construction between canon permutations and multiset permutations, giving rise to \emph{dissonant canon permutations}, as well as $γ$-positivity and interpretations of descent polynomials of canon permutations.

Major Index on Catalan Combinatorics
We study the two statistics, the inversion number and the major index, on Catalan combinatorial objects such as $r$-Dyck paths, $r$-Stirling permutations, non-crossing partitions, Dyck tilings, and symmetric Dyck paths. We show that they are equidistributed with the inversion number or the major index on Dyck paths.

On Pólya-Young urn models and growth processes
This work is devoted to Pólya-Young urns, a class of periodic Pólya urns of importance in the analysis of Young tableaux. We provide several extension of the previous results of Banderier, Marchal and Wallner [Ann. Prob. (2020)] on Pólya-Young urns and also generalize the previously studied model. We determine the limit law of the generalized model, involving the the local time of noise-reinforced Bessel processes. We also uncover a martingale structure, which leads directly to almost-sure convergence of the random variable of interest. This allows us to add second order asymptotics by providing a central limit theorem for the martingale tail sum, as well as a law of the iterated logarithm. We also turn to random vectors and obtain the limit law of Pólya-Young urns with multiple colors. Additionally, we introduce several growth processes and combinatorial objects, which are closely related to urn models. We define increasing trees with periodic immigration and we related the dynamics of the Pólya-Young urns to label-based parameters in such tree families. Furthermore, we discuss a generalization of Stirling permutations and obtain a bijection to increasing trees with periodic immigration. Finally, we introduce a chinese restaurant process with competition and relate it to increasing trees, as well as Pólya-Young urns.

Stirling permutation codes. II
In the context of Stirling polynomials, Gessel and Stanley introduced the definition of Stirling permutation, which has attracted extensive attention over the past decades. Recently, we introduced Stirling permutation code and provided numerous equidistribution results as applications. The purpose of the present work is to further analyse Stirling permutation code. First, we derive an expansion formula expressing the joint distribution of the types $A$ and $B$ descent statistics over the hyperoctahedral group, and we also find an interlacing property involving the zeros of its coefficient polynomials. Next, we prove a strong connection between signed permutations in the hyperoctahedral group and Stirling permutations. Furthermore, we investigate unified generalizations of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials and ascent-plateau polynomials. Using Stirling permutation codes, we provide expansion formulas for eight-variable and seventeen-variable polynomials, which imply several $e$-positive expansions and clarify the connections among several statistics. Our results generalize the results of Bóna, Chen-Fu, Dumont, Janson, Haglund-Visontai and Petersen.
On the Lucky and Displacement Statistics of Stirling Permutations
Stirling permutations are parking functions, and we investigate two parking function statistics in the context of these objects: lucky cars and displacement. Among our results, we consider two extreme cases: extremely lucky Stirling permutations (those with maximally many lucky cars) and extremely unlucky Stirling permutations (those with exactly one lucky car). We show that the number of extremely lucky Stirling permutations of order $n$ is the Catalan number $C_n$, and the number of extremely unlucky Stirling permutations is $(n-1)!$. We also give some results for luck that lies between these two extremes. Further, we establish that the displacement of any Stirling permutation of order $n$ is $n^2$, and we prove several results about displacement composition vectors. We conclude with directions for further study.
Pattern Avoidance for Fibonacci Sequences using $k$-Regular Words
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two $k$-ary Fibonacci recurrences are $a_k(n) = a_k(n-1) + k \cdot a_k(n-2)$ and $b_k(n) = k \cdot b_k(n-1) + b_k(n-2)$. We provide a simple proof that $a_k(n)$ is the number of $k$-regular words over $[n] = \{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ that avoid patterns $\{121, 123, 132, 213\}$ when using base cases $a_k(0) = a_k(1) = 1$ for any $k \geq 1$. This was previously proven by Kuba and Panholzer in the context of Wilf-equivalence for restricted Stirling permutations, and it creates Simion and Schmidt's classic result on the Fibonacci sequence when $k=1$, and the Jacobsthal sequence when $k=2$. We complement this theorem by proving that $b_k(n)$ is the number of $k$-regular words over $[n]$ that avoid $\{122, 213\}$ with $b_k(0) = b_k(1) = 1$ for any~$k \geq 2$. Finally, we conjecture that $|Av^{2}_{n}(\underline{121}, 123, 132, 213)| = a_1(n)^2$ for $n \geq 0$. That is, vincularizing the Stirling pattern in Kuba and Panholzer's Jacobsthal result gives the Fibonacci-squared numbers.

Enumeration of flattened $k$-Stirling permutations with respect to descents
A $k$-Stirling permutation of order $n$ is said to be "flattened" if the leading terms of its increasing runs are in ascending order. We show that flattened $k$-Stirling permutations of order $n+1$ are in bijection correspondence with a colored variant of type $B$ set partitions of $[-n,n]$, introduced by D.G.L. Wang. Using the theory of weighted labelled structures, we give the exponential generating functions of their cardinality and their descent enumerating polynomials. We also provide enumerative formulae for the number of flattened $k$-Stirling permutations of order $n$ with small number of descents and the number of flattened Stirling permutations with maximum number of descents.
Flattened Stirling Permutations

Recall that a Stirling permutation is a permutation on the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots,n,n\}$ such that any numbers appearing between repeated values of $i$ must be greater than $i$. We call a Stirling permutation ``flattened'' if the leading terms of maximal chains of ascents (called runs) are in weakly increasing order. Our main result establishes a bijection between flattened Stirling permutations and type $B$ set partitions of $\{0,\pm1,\pm2,\ldots,\pm (n-1)\}$, which are known to be enumerated by the Dowling numbers, and we give an independent proof of this fact. We also determine the maximal number of runs for any flattened Stirling permutation, and we enumerate flattened Stirling permutations with a small number of runs or with two runs of equal length. We conclude with some conjectures and generalizations worthy of future investigation.
Mesas of Stirling permutations
Given a Stirling permutation w, we introduce the mesa set of w as the natural generalization of the pinnacle set of a permutation. Our main results characterize admissible mesa sets and give closed enumerative formulas in terms of rational Catalan numbers by providing an explicit bijection between mesa sets and rational Dyck paths.

Stirling permutation codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The development of the theories of the second-order Eulerian polynomials began with the works of Buckholtz and Carlitz in their studies of an asymptotic expansion. Gessel-Stanley introduced Stirling permutations and presented combinatorial interpretations of the second-order Eulerian polynomials. Recently, there is a growing interest in the properties of Stirling permutations. The motivation of this paper is to develop a general method for finding equidistributed statistics on Stirling permutations. Firstly, we show that the up-down-pair statistic is equidistributed with ascent-plateau statistic, and that the exterior up-down-pair statistic is equidistributed with left ascent-plateau statistic. Secondly, we introduce the Stirling permutation codes. Several equidistribution results follow from simple applications. In particular, we find that six bivariable set-valued statistics are equidistributed on the set of Stirling permutations. As an application, we extend a classical result independently established by Dumont and Bona. Thirdly, we explore bijections among Stirling permutation codes, perfect matchings and trapezoidal words. We then show the e-positivity of the enumerators of Stirling permutations by left ascent-plateaux, exterior up-down-pairs and right plateau-descents. In the final part, the e-positivity of the multivariate k-th order Eulerian polynomials is established, which improves a result of Janson-Kuba-Panholzer and generalizes a recent result of Chen-Fu.

Statistics on clusters and $r$-Stirling permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Goulden$\unicode{x2013}$Jackson cluster method, adapted to permutations by Elizalde and Noy, reduces the problem of counting permutations by occurrences of a prescribed consecutive pattern to that of counting clusters, which are special permutations with a lot of structure. Recently, Zhuang found a generalization of the cluster method which specializes to refinements by additional permutation statistics, namely the inverse descent number $\operatorname{ides}$, the inverse peak number $\operatorname{ipk}$, and the inverse left peak number $\operatorname{ilpk}$. Continuing this line of work, we study the enumeration of $2134\cdots m$-clusters by $\operatorname{ides}$, $\operatorname{ipk}$, and $\operatorname{ilpk}$, which allows us to derive formulas for counting permutations by occurrences of the consecutive pattern $2134\cdots m$ jointly with each of these statistics. Analogous results for the pattern $12\cdots (m-2)m(m-1)$ are obtained via symmetry arguments. Along the way, we discover that $2134\cdots (r+1)$-clusters are equinumerous with $r$-Stirling permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley, and we establish some joint equidistributions between these two families of permutations.
