The Gessel Correspondence and the Partial $γ$-Positivity of the Eulerian Polynomials on Multiset Stirling Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Pondering upon the grammatical labeling of 0-1-2 increasing plane trees, we come to the realization that the grammatical labels play a role as records of chopped off leaves of the original increasing binary trees. While such an understanding is purely psychological, it does give rise to an efficient apparatus to tackle the partial $γ$-positivity of the Eulearian polynomials on multiset Stirling permutations, as long as we bear in mind the combinatorial meanings of the labels $x$ and $y$ in the Gessel representation of a $k$-Stirling permutation by means of an increasing $(k+1)$-ary tree. More precisely, we introduce a Foata-Strehl action on the Gessel trees resulting in an interpretation of the partial $γ$-coefficients of the aforementioned Eulerian polynomials, different from the ones found by Lin-Ma-Zhang and Yan-Huang-Yang. In particular, our strategy can be adapted to deal with the partial $γ$-coefficients of the second order Eulerian polynomials, which in turn can be readily converted to the combinatorial formulation due to Ma-Ma-Yeh in connection with certain statistics of Stirling permutations.

Eulerian polynomials, Stirling permutations and increasing trees
We study two generalizations of the gamma-expansion of Eulerian polynomials from the viewpoint of the decompositions of statistics. We first present an expansion formula of the trivariate Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of descents, big ascents and successions of permutations. And then, inspired by the work of Chen and Fu on the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials, we show the e-positivity of the multivariate k-th order Eulerian polynomials, which are the enumerators for the joint distribution of ascents, descents and j-plateaux of k-Stirling permutations. We provide combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients of these two expansions in terms of increasing trees.

Stability of combinatorial polynomials and its applications
The aim of this paper is to make a systematical study on the stability of polynomials in combinatorics. Applying the characterizations of Borcea and Brändén concerning linear operators preserving stability, we present criteria for real stability and Hurwitz stability. We also give a criterion for Hurwitz stability of the Turán expressions. As applications, we derive some stability results occurred in the literature in a unified manner. In addition, we obtain the Hurwitz stability of Turán expressions for alternating runs polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ and solve a conjecture concerning Hurwitz stability of alternating runs polynomials defined on a dual set of Stirling permutations. Furthermore, we prove that the Hurwitz stability of any symmetric polynomial implies its semi-$γ$-positivity. We study a class of symmetric polynomials and derive many nice properties including Hurwitz stability, semi-$γ$-positivity, non $γ$-positivity, unimodality, strong $q$-log-convexity, the Jacobi continued fraction expansion and the relation with derivative polynomials. In particular, these properties of the alternating descents polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ can be obtained in a unified approach. Finally, we use real stability to prove a criterion for zeros interlacing between a polynomial and its reciprocal polynomial, which implies the alternatingly increasing property. This criterion extends a result of Brändén and Solus and unifies such properties for many combinatorial polynomials, including ascent polynomials for $k$-ary words, descent polynomials on signed Stirling permutations and $q$-analog of descent polynomials on colored permutations, and so on. We prove the alternatingly increasing property and zeros interlacing for two kinds of peak polynomials on the dual set of Stirling permutations.

A Context-free Grammar for the $e$-Positivity of the Trivariate Second-order Eulerian Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ma-Ma-Yeh made a beautiful observation that a transformation of the grammar of Dumont instantly leads to the $γ$-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials. We notice that the transformed grammar bears a striking resemblance to the grammar for 0-1-2 increasing trees also due to Dumont. The appearance of the factor of two fits perfectly in a grammatical labeling of 0-1-2 increasing plane trees. Furthermore, the grammatical calculus is instrumental to the computation of the generating functions. This approach can be adapted to study the $e$-positivity of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials first introduced by Dumont in the contexts of ternary trees and Stirling permutations, and independently defined by Janson, in connection with the joint distribution of the numbers of ascents, descents and plateaux over Stirling permutations.

Partial $γ$-Positivity for Quasi-Stirling Permutations of Multisets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the enumerative polynomials of quasi-Stirling permutations of multisets with respect to the statistics of plateaux, descents and ascents are partial $γ$-positive, thereby confirming a recent conjecture posed by Lin, Ma and Zhang. This is accomplished by proving the partial $γ$-positivity of the enumerative polynomials of certain ordered labeled trees, which are in bijection with quasi-Stirling permutations of multisets. As an application, we provide an alternative proof of the partial $γ$-positivity of the enumerative polynomials on Stirling permutations of multisets.

Rational Dyck tilings
We introduce rational Dyck tilings, or $(a,b)$-Dyck tilings, and study them by the decomposition into $(1,1)$-Dyck tilings. This decomposition allows us to make use of combinatorial models for $(1,1)$-Dyck tilings such as the Hermite history and the Dyck tiling strip bijection. Together with $b$-Stirling permutations associated to the rational Dyck tilings, we obtain a correspondence between an $(a,b)$-Dyck tiling and a tuple of $ab$ $(1,1)$-Dyck tilings.

Rational Dyck paths and decompositions
We study combinatorial properties of a rational Dyck path by decomposing it into a tuple of Dyck paths. The combinatorial models such as $b$-Stirling permutations, $(b+1)$-ary trees, parenthesis presentations, and binary trees play central roles to establish a correspondence between the rational Dyck path and the tuple of Dyck paths. We reinterpret two orders, the Young and the rotation orders, on rational Dyck paths in terms of the tuple of Dyck paths by use of the decomposition. As an application, we show a duality between $(a,b)$-Dyck paths and $(b,a)$-Dyck paths in terms of binary trees.

Eulerian pairs and Eulerian recurrence systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we characterize a duality relation between Eulerian recurrences and Eulerian recurrence systems, which generalizes and unifies Hermite-Biehler decompositions of several enumerative polynomials, including flag descent polynomials for hyperoctahedral group, flag ascent-plateau polynomials for Stirling permutations, up-down run polynomials for symmetric group and alternating run polynomials for hyperoctahedral group. As applications, we derive some properties of associated enumerative polynomials. In particular, we find that both the ascent-plateau polynomials and left ascent-plateau polynomials for Stirling permutations are alternatingly increasing, and so they are unimodal with modes in the middle.

Stieltjes moment properties and continued fractions from combinatorial triangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many combinatorial numbers can be placed in the following generalized triangular array $[T_{n,k}]_{n,k\ge 0}$ satisfying the recurrence relation: \begin{equation*} T_{n,k}=λ(a_0n+a_1k+a_2)T_{n-1,k}+(b_0n+b_1k+b_2)T_{n-1,k-1}+\frac{d(da_1-b_1)}λ(n-k+1)T_{n-1,k-2} \end{equation*} with $T_{0,0}=1$ and $T_{n,k}=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$ for suitable $a_0,a_1,a_2,b_0,b_1,b_2,d$ and $λ$. For $n\geq0$, denote by $T_n(q)$ the generating function of the $n$-th row. In this paper, we develop various criteria for $\textbf{x}$-Stieltjes moment property and $3$-$\textbf{x}$-log-convexity of $T_n(q)$ based on the Jacobi continued fraction expression of $\sum_{n\geq0}T_n(q)t^n$, where $\textbf{x}$ is a set of indeterminates consisting of $q$ and those parameters occurring in the recurrence relation. With the help of a criterion of Wang and Zhu [Adv. in Appl. Math. (2016)], we show that the corresponding linear transformation of $T_{n,k}$ preserves Stieltjes moment properties of sequences. Finally, we present some related examples including factorial numbers, Whitney numbers, Stirling permutations, minimax trees and peak statistics.

Plateaux on generalized Stirling permutations and partial $γ$-positivity
We prove that the enumerative polynomials of generalized Stirling permutations by the statistics of plateaux, descents and ascents are partial $γ$-positive. Specialization of our result to the Jacobi-Stirling permutations confirms a recent partial $γ$-positivity conjecture due to Ma, Yeh and the second named author. Our partial $γ$-positivity expansion, as well as a combinatorial interpretation for the corresponding $γ$-coefficients, are obtained via the machine of context-free grammars and a group action on generalized Stirling permutations. Besides, we also provide an alternative approach to the partial $γ$-positivity from the stability of certain multivariate polynomials.

Descents on quasi-Stirling permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stirling permutations were introduced by Gessel and Stanley, who used their enumeration by the number of descents to give a combinatorial interpretation of certain polynomials related to Stirling numbers. Quasi-Stirling permutations, which can be viewed as labeled noncrossing matchings, were introduced by Archer et al. as a natural extension of Stirling permutations. Janson's correspondence between Stirling permutations and labeled increasing plane trees extends to a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the same set of trees without the increasing restriction. Archer et al. posed the problem of enumerating quasi-Stirling permutations by the number of descents, and conjectured that there are $(n+1)^{n-1}$ such permutations of size $n$ having the maximum number of descents. In this paper we prove their conjecture, and we give the generating function for quasi-Stirling permutations by the number of descents, expressed as a compositional inverse of the generating function of Eulerian polynomials. We also find the analogue for quasi-Stirling permutations of the main result from Gessel and Stanley's paper. We prove that the distribution of descents on these permutations is asymptotically normal, and that the roots of the corresponding quasi-Stirling polynomials are all real, in analogy to Bóna's results for Stirling permutations. Finally, we generalize our results to a one-parameter family of permutations that extends $k$-Stirling permutations, and we refine them by also keeping track of the number of ascents and the number of plateaus.

The alternating run polynomials of permutations
In this paper, we first consider a generalization of the David-Barton identity which relate the alternating run polynomials to Eulerian polynomials. By using context-free grammars, we then present a combinatorial interpretation of a family of q-alternating run polynomials. Furthermore, we introduce the definition of semi-gamma-positive polynomial and we show the semi-gamma-positivity of the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations. A connection between the up-down run polynomials of permutations and the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations is established.

Martingales and descent statistics
This paper develops techniques to study the number of descents in random permutations via martingales. We relax an assumption in the Berry-Esseen theorem of Bolthausen (1982) to extend the theorem's scope to martingale differences of time-dependent variances. This extension leads to a new proof of the fact that the number of descents in random permutations is asymptotically normal with an error bound of order $1/\sqrt{n}.$ The same techniques are shown to be applicable to other descent and descent-related statistics as they satisfy certain recurrence relation conditions. These statistics include inversions, descents in signed permutations, descents in Stirling permutations, the length of the longest alternating subsequences, descents in matchings and two-sided Eulerian numbers.
Pattern restricted quasi-Stirling permutations
We define a variation of Stirling permutations, called quasi-Stirling permutations, to be permutations on the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots, n,n\}$ that avoid the patterns 1212 and 2121. Their study is motivated by a known relationship between Stirling permutations and increasing ordered rooted labeled trees. We construct a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the set of ordered rooted labeled trees and investigate pattern avoidance for these permutations.

Gamma-positivity and partial gamma-positivity of descent-type polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study gamma-positivity of descent-type polynomials by introducing the change of context-free grammars method. We first present grammatical proofs of the gamma-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials, type B Eulerian polynomials, derangement polynomials, Narayana polynomials and type B Narayana polynomials. We then provide partial gamma-positive expansions for several multivariate polynomials associated to Stirling permutations, Legendre-Stirling permutations, Jacobi-Stirling permutations and type B derangements, and the recurrences for the partial gamma-coefficients of these expansions are also obtained. Moreover, we define variants of the Foata-Strehl group action which are used to give combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients of most of these partial gamma-positive expansions.

The ascent-plateau statistics on Stirling permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, several variants of the ascent-plateau statistic are introduced, including flag ascent-plateau, double ascent and descent-plateau. We first study the flag ascent-plateau statistic on Stirling permutations by using context-free grammars. We then present a unified refinement of the ascent polynomials and the ascent-plateau polynomials. In particular, by using Foata and Strehl's group action, we prove two bistatistics over the set of Stirling permutations of order n are equidistributed.
Stirling permutations, marked permutations and Stirling derangements
In this paper we introduce the definition of marked permutations. We first present a bijection between Stirling permutations and marked permutations. We then present an involution on Stirling derangements. Furthermore, we present a symmetric bivariate enumerative polynomials on $r$-colored marked permutations. Finally, we give an explanation of $r$-colored marked permutations by using the language of combinatorial objects.
