Real-Rootedness and Gamma-Positivity for a Variation of the Morris Constant Term
Beck and Pixton expressed the Ehrhart polynomial of the Birkhoff polytope as a weighted sum of constant terms of several multivariate rational functions. Xin and Zhang studied a class of constant terms $h_n(t)$, which can be regarded as a variation of the Morris constant term. They proved that $h_n(t)$ is a polynomial of degree $(n-1)^2$ and obtained many nice properties involving the Morris constant term identity. Let $h_n^*(y)=(1-y)^{(n-1)^2+1}\sum_{t\geq0}h_n(t)y^t$. For fixed $n\geq 3$, we obtain the following results for $h_n^*(y)$: (i): $h_n^*(y)$ is a polynomial with positive integer coefficients. (ii): $h_n^*(y)$ is real-rooted. In particular, all its roots are non-positive real numbers. (iii): $h_n^*(y)$ is Gamma-positive. Furthermore, $h_n^*(y)$ is palindromic, unimodal, and ultra log-concave. This confirms Xin and Zhang's conjecture regarding $h_n^*(y)$. In order to resolve this conjecture, we also developed an operator on the space of symmetric polynomials that preserves real stability. As a byproduct, we prove that every root of a Gamma polynomial associated with $h_n^*(y)$ is a negative real number.
Gamma-positivity for octopuses: a bijective proof
Chapoton introduced an interesting family of polytopes called arbor polytopes, where a polytope $\mathcal{Q}_τ$ is associated to any arbor $τ$. Chapoton conjectured that the polynomial $h(τ)$ which counts lattice points in $\mathcal{Q}_τ$ by number of nonzero entries is palindromic and unimodal. Athanasiadis, Xiao, and Yan recently proved that $h(τ)$ is gamma-positive for a certain class of arbors they call octopuses. Since their proof was computational, they asked for one that is bijective. We present such a proof. We also extend their results by showing that $h(τ)$ is gamma-positive for a larger class of arbors we call lopsided octopuses.
Symmetric edge polytopes are not gamma-positive
A conjecture posed by Ohsugi and Tsuchiya (2019) postulates that the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials of symmetric edge polytopes are $γ$-positive. We disprove this conjecture by exhibiting an infinite family of counterexamples. The smallest example provided by our construction is a $36$-dimensional symmetric edge polytope.
Matroid analogues of Gal's conjecture
Well-known conjectures of Charney--Davis, Gal, and Nevo--Petersen predict increasingly strong positivity phenomena for the h-vectors of flag simplicial spheres. In this paper, we formulate and prove matroid analogues of these conjectures in the setting of Chow polynomials of matroids with building sets. Our proofs rely on toric geometry and make crucial use of tropical intersection theory.
We begin by introducing complete building sets, a class encompassing all maximal building sets and other important families such as minimal building sets of braid matroids. For matroids with complete building sets, we analyze the Chow rings of the associated toric varieties, and prove that their Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials are gamma-positive. From this analysis, we derive a combinatorial formula for the coefficients of the gamma-expansion, and use it to explicitly construct a simplicial complex $Γ$, whose f-vector coincides with the gamma-vector. This establishes a matroid analogue of the Nevo--Petersen conjecture. When the building set is maximal, we further prove that $Γ$ is balanced, confirming the strongest such analogue in this case. As an application, we obtain a new combinatorial formula for the gamma-expansion of the Poincaré polynomial of the Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen compactification $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, and derive several novel numerical inequalities for its coefficients.
We also study the toric varieties of matroids with flag building sets, another class containing maximal building sets as well as several other prominent families. We prove that the Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials of these toric varieties are gamma-positive. This result establishes matroid analogues of the Charney--Davis and Gal conjectures, and simultaneously extends several recent gamma-positivity results for Chow polynomials.
Lattice point enumeration of some arbor polytopes
The $n$-dimensional lattice polytopes $\mathcal{Q}_{n,k}$ obtained by intersecting the $n$th dilate of the standard $n$-dimensional simplex in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the half-spaces $x_i \le 1$ for $1 \le i \le k$ form an interesting special case of Chapoton's arbor polytopes. They interpolate between the $n$th dilate of the standard $n$-dimensional simplex and the standard $n$-dimensional cube in $\mathbb{R}^n$. This paper provides an explicit combinatorial interpretation of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of $\mathcal{Q}_{n,k}$, as the ascent enumerator of certain words, and partly confirms some of Chapoton's conjectures on the lattice point enumeration of arbor polytopes in this special case. More specifically, the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{Q}_{n,k}$ is shown to be magic positive, by means of a new combinatorial parking model for cars, and the real-rootedness of its $h^\ast$-polynomial is deduced. The polynomial whose coefficients count the lattice points of $\mathcal{Q}_{n,k}$ by the number of their nonzero coordinates is shown to be gamma-positive and a combinatorial interpretation of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of any arbor polytope is conjectured.

A permutation is called mod-k-alternating if its entries are restricted to having the same remainder as the index, modulo some integer $k \geq 1.$ In this paper, we find the sign-balance for mod-k-alternating permutations with respect to the statistic excedance. Moreover, we study the sign-balance for excedances over mod-k-alternating derangements. The results are obtained by constructing suitable matrices and connecting their determinants with the signed excedance enumeration of mod-k-alternating permutations. As an application of the signed excedance enumeration, we prove that when $n \equiv k \pmod {2k}$, the excedance enumerating polynomials over the even and odd mod-k-alternating permutations, starting with a fixed remainder, are gamma-positive.

Rota used the functional L to recover old properties and obtain some new formulas for the Bell numbers. Tanny used Rota's functional L and the celebrated Worpitzky identity to obtain some expression for the ordered Bell numbers, which can be seen as an evident to the fact that the ordered Bell numbers are gamma-positive. In this paper, we extend some of Rota's and Tanny's results to the framework of the set partitions of Coxeter type B.
Blockwise simple permutations
A permutation is called {\it {block-wise simple}} if it contains no interval of the form $p_1\oplus p_2$ or $p_1 \ominus p_2$. We present this new set of permutations and explore some of its combinatorial properties. We present a generating function for this set, as well as a recursive formula for counting block-wise simple permutations. Following Tenner, who founded the notion of interval posets, we characterize and count the interval posets corresponding to block-wise simple permutations. We also present a bijection between these interval posets and certain tiling's of the $n$-gon. Finally, we prove that the bi-variate distribution of the descent and inverse descent numbers are gamma-positive, provided the correctness of our recent conjecture on simple permutations.
A symmetric decomposition of the Boros-Moll polynomials
In their study of a quartic integral, Boros and Moll introduced a special case of Jacobi polynomials, which are now known as the Boros-Moll polynomials. In this paper, we study a symmetric decomposition of Boros-Moll polynomials. We discover that both of the polynomials in the symmetric decomposition are alternatingly gamma-positive polynomials.

An enumerative theory of triangulations of simplicial complexes has been developed by Stanley. A key role in his theory is played by the local $h$-polynomial of a triangulation of a simplex. This paper develops a parallel theory, in which the role of the local $h$-polynomial is played by a simpler invariant, namely the theta polynomial. This allows one to deduce unimodality and gamma-positivity properties of $h$-polynomials of triangulations of simplicial complexes from corresponding properties of theta polynomials, which are studied here in some detail. To mention one concrete application, the $h$-polynomial of the antiprism triangulation of any simplicial homology sphere is shown to be gamma-positive, thus confirming Gal's conjecture in a new special case.

Gamma-positivity appears frequently in finite geometries, combinatorics and number theory. Motivated by the recent work of Sagan and Tirrell (Adv. Math., 374 (2020), 107387), we study the relationships between gamma-positivity and alternating gamma-positivity. As applications, we derive several alternatingly gamma-positive polynomials related to Narayana polynomials and Eulerian polynomials. In particular, we show the alternating gamma-positivity and Hurwitz stability of a combination of the modified Narayana polynomials of types A and B. By using colored $2\times n$ Young diagrams, we present a unified combinatorial interpretations of three identities involving Narayana numbers of type B. A general result of this paper is that every gamma-positive polynomial is also alternatingly semi-gamma-positive. At the end of this paper, we pose two conjectures, one concerns the Boros-Moll polynomials and the other concerns the enumerators of permutations by descents and excedances.

In this paper, we give a type B analogue of the 1/k-Eulerian polynomials. Properties of this kind of polynomials, including combinatorial interpretations, recurrence relations and gamma-positivity are studied. In particular, we show that the 1/k-Eulerian polynomials of type B are gamma-positive when $k>0$. Moreover, we obtain the corresponding results for derangements of type B. We show that a type B 1/k-derangement polynomials $d_n^B(x;k)$ are bi-gamma-positive when $k\geq 1/2$. In particular, we get a symmetric decomposition of $d_n^B(x;1/2)$ in terms of the classical derangement polynomials.

In this paper, we study gamma-positivity of descent-type polynomials by introducing the change of context-free grammars method. We first present grammatical proofs of the gamma-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials, type B Eulerian polynomials, derangement polynomials, Narayana polynomials and type B Narayana polynomials. We then provide partial gamma-positive expansions for several multivariate polynomials associated to Stirling permutations, Legendre-Stirling permutations, Jacobi-Stirling permutations and type B derangements, and the recurrences for the partial gamma-coefficients of these expansions are also obtained. Moreover, we define variants of the Foata-Strehl group action which are used to give combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients of most of these partial gamma-positive expansions.
