Minkowski decomposability of symmetric edge polytopes
In this paper, we study the Minkowski decomposability of symmetric edge polytopes $P_G^\pm$ of a finite simple graph $G$ on vertex set $[n]$. More precisely, we give a complete characterization of graphs whose symmetric edge polytopes are Minkowski decomposable. We prove that $P_G^\pm$ is Minkowski decomposable if and only if $G$ is one of the three complete multipartite graphs: $K_n$, $K_{2,n-2}$, or $K_{1,1,n-2}$. In other words, if $G$ does not belong to these three families, then $P_G^\pm$ is Minkowski indecomposable.
On unirational varieties with poset parameterizations
We use partially ordered sets (posets) to provide a canonical parameterization for the Zariski closure of the image of a semialgebraic set under a rational map whose coordinate functions are polynomials with nonnegative integral coefficients. The resulting poset parametrization of such a unirational variety allows us to translate several well-studied problems into combinatorics; e.g. reducing the problems to describing the poset associated to the variety. These problems include, the implicitization problem from algebraic geometry, the toric reparameterization problem, the computation of the linear span of the variety, and the problem of distinguishing two semialgebraic subsets of the same ambient space. The technique applies to instances of these problems in several fields, including algebraic geometry, algebraic combinatorics, statistics and applied algebra. We demonstrate the technique on examples from each field, including degenerate subvarieties of secant varieties, matroid flat varieties -- which generalize toric varieties of edge polytopes, as well as varieties arising in multivariate data analysis and evolutionary biology.

Symmetric edge polytopes are not gamma-positive
A conjecture posed by Ohsugi and Tsuchiya (2019) postulates that the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials of symmetric edge polytopes are $γ$-positive. We disprove this conjecture by exhibiting an infinite family of counterexamples. The smallest example provided by our construction is a $36$-dimensional symmetric edge polytope.

Simplex faces and quadratic toric ideals of lattice polytopes
We introduce the clique-face property for lattice polytopes and investigate its relationship with quadratic generation of toric ideals. We prove that, under a mild condition on edges, if the toric ideal of a lattice polytope is generated by quadratic binomials, then every clique of its 1-skeleton is the vertex set of a face. In particular, if the toric ideal of a $(0,1)$-polytope is generated by quadratic binomials, then every clique of its 1-skeleton is the vertex set of a face. For $(0,1)$-polytopes satisfying condition (E), we characterize this clique-face property in terms of divisibility by quadratic monomials appearing in quadratic binomials of the toric ideal; as a consequence, such toric ideals have no indispensable monomials of degree $\ge 3$. We apply these results to edge polytopes and cut polytopes, for which the clique-face property is equivalent to quadratic generation. Finally, motivated by conjectures on quadratic toric ideals, we verify the clique-face property for simple polytopes, matroid independence polytopes, and matroid base polytopes, and discuss stable set polytopes.
Indecomposability of 0/1-polytopes
We prove that every 0/1-polytope has a unique Minkowski decomposition into indecomposable polytopes, up to translation of summands. The summands lie in pairwise orthogonal subspaces. Thus, every 0/1-polytope is the Cartesian product of indecomposable 0/1-polytopes. As applications, we obtain uniform combinatorial indecomposability criteria for order and chain polytopes, matroid polytopes, stable set and clique polytopes, edge polytopes, flow polytopes, and 2-level/compressed polytopes. We also show that every nontrivial factorization of a multi-affine polynomial is a product of multi-affine polynomials in disjoint sets of variables.
Central limit theorems for high dimensional lattice polytopes: symmetric edge polytopes
We investigate symmetric edge polytopes generated by Erdős--Rényi random graphs in a high-dimensional regime. These objects provide a natural and largely unexplored model of random lattice polytopes, in which geometric properties are governed by graph-theoretic structure. Focusing on the number of polytope edges and on the number of edges in unimodular triangulations, we derive precise asymptotics for expectations and variances and establish central limit theorems with explicit rates of convergence. Our analysis combines a detailed combinatorial-geometric study of the graph configurations determining the facial structure with the discrete Malliavin--Stein method for normal approximation. In particular, we identify a distinguished parameter value at which the leading variance term cancels, producing an atypical fluctuation regime. To the best of our knowledge, the results obtained here constitute the first distributional limit theorems for random lattice polytopes
Symmetric (co)homology polytopes
Symmetric edge polytopes are a recent and well-studied family of centrally symmetric polytopes arising from graphs. In this paper, we introduce a generalization of this family to arbitrary simplicial complexes. We show how topological properties of a simplicial complex can be translated into geometric properties of such polytopes, and vice versa. We study the integer decomposition property, facets and reflexivity of these polytopes. Using Gröbner basis techniques, we obtain a (not necessarily unimodular) triangulation of these polytopes. Due to the tools we use, most of our results hold in the more general setting of arbitrary centrally symmetric polytopes.
The number of edges of a symmetric edge polytope
The symmetric edge polytope of a simple graph is a lattice polytope defined as the convex hull of a subset of the type A roots corresponding to the edges of the graph. In this article we prove a sharp lower bound for the number of edges of the symmetric edge polytope of a graph as a function of elementary graph invariants. Moreover, we characterize graphs attaining this bound. We highlight a connection with the h*-polynomial of such polytopes and, motivated by a conjecture of Ohsugi and Tsuchiya, we investigate the behaviour of such polynomial under edge-deletion in the graph.
Unitary actions and equivariant volumes of symmetric edge polytopes
The symmetric edge polytope ($\mathrm{SEP}$) of a finite simple graph $G$ is a centrally symmetric lattice polytope whose vertices are defined by the edges of the graph. Among the information encoded by these polytopes are the symmetries of the graph, which appear as symmetries of the polytope. We describe the rigid symmetries of these polytopes, and show that $\mathrm{SEP}$s are unitarily equivalent exactly when their associated graphs are isomorphic. We then find an explicit relationship between the relative volumes of the subsets of the symmetric edge polytope $\mathrm{SEP}$ fixed by the natural action of symmetric group elements and the symmetric edge polytopes of smaller graphs to which the subsets are linearly equivalent. We also provide a vertex description of the fixed polytopes and find a description of the symmetric edge polytopes to which they are equivalent, in terms of contractions of the graph $G$ induced by the cycle decompositions of the permutations under which the subsets are fixed. Specializations of our results provide equivalence and volume relationships for fixed polytopes of symmetric edge polytopes of complete graphs (equivalently, for fixed polytopes of root polytopes of type $A_n$), and describe the symmetry group of this family of polytopes.

Matroid polytopes with small rank
For a lattice polytope $P$, the rank of $P$ is defined by $F-(\dim P+1)$, where $F$ is the number of facets of $P$. In this paper, we study matroid polytopes with small rank. More precisely, we characterize matroid independence polytopes and graphic matroid base polytopes with rank at most three. Furthermore, using this characterization, we investigate their relationships with order polytopes, stable set polytopes, and edge polytopes.

Oriented Matroid Circuit Polytopes
Matroids give rise to several natural constructions of polytopes. Inspired by this, we examine polytopes that arise from the signed circuits of an oriented matroid. We give the dimensions of these polytopes arising from graphical oriented matroids and their duals. Moreover, we consider polytopes constructed from cocircuits of oriented matroids generated by the positive roots in any type A root system. We give an explicit description of their face structure and determine the Ehrhart series. We also study an action of the symmetric group on these polytopes, giving a full description the subpolytopes fixed by each permutation. These type A polytopes are graphic zonotopes, are polar duals of symmetric edge polytopes, and also make an appearance in Stapledon's paper introducing Equivariant Ehrhart Theory.

A new class of magic positive Ehrhart polynomials of reflexive polytopes
The magic positivity of Ehrhart polynomials is a useful tool for proving the real-rootedness of the $h^\ast$-polynomials. In this paper, we provide a new class of reflexive polytopes whose Ehrhart polynomials are magic positive. First, we prove that the Ehrhart polynomials of Stasheff polytopes are magic positive. Second, we provide a partial proof of the magic positivity of the Ehrhart polynomials of the dual polytopes of the symmetric edge polytopes of cycles.

Root polytopes, flow polytopes, and order polytopes
In this paper we study the class of polytopes which can be obtained by taking the convex hull of some subset of the points $\{e_i-e_j \ \vert \ i \neq j\} \cup \{\pm e_i\}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $e_1,\dots,e_n$ is the standard basis of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Such a polytope can be encoded by a quiver $Q$ with vertices $V \subseteq \{v_1,\dots,v_n\} \cup \{\star\}$, where each edge $v_j\to v_i$ or $\star \to v_i$ or $v_i\to \star$ gives rise to the point $e_i-e_j$ or $e_i$ or $-e_i$, respectively; we denote the corresponding polytope as $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$. These polytopes have been studied extensively under names such as edge polytope and root polytope. We show that if the quiver $Q$ is strongly-connected then the root polytope $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$ is reflexive and terminal; we moreover give a combinatorial description of the facets of $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$. We also show that if $Q$ is planar, then $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$ is (integrally equivalent to the) polar dual of the flow polytope of the dual quiver. Finally we consider the case that $Q$ comes from a ranked poset $P$, and show that $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$ is polar dual to (a translation of) a marked poset polytope. We then study the toric variety $Y(\mathcal{F}_Q)$ associated to the face fan $\mathcal{F}_Q$ of $\operatorname{Root}(Q)$. If $Q$ comes from a ranked poset $P$ we give a combinatorial description of the Picard group of $Y(\mathcal{F}_Q)$, and we show that $Y(\mathcal{F}_Q)$ is a small partial desingularisation of the Hibi toric variety $Y_{\mathcal{O}(P)}$ of the order polytope $\mathcal{O}(P)$. We show that $Y(\mathcal{F}_Q)$ has a small crepant toric resolution of singularities $Y(\widehat{\mathcal{F}}_Q)$, and as a consequence that the Hibi toric variety $Y_{\mathcal{O}(P)}$ has a small resolution of singularities for any ranked poset $P$. These results have applications to mirror symmetry.

Unimodular polytopes and column number bounds on polytopal totally unimodular matrices via Seymour's decomposition theorem
We prove a sharp upper bound on the number of distinct columns of a totally unimodular matrix with column sums $1$ improving upon Heller's classical bound. The proof uses Seymour's decomposition theorem. Such matrices are closely related to unimodular polytopes: lattice polytopes where the vertices of every full-dimensional subsimplex form an affine lattice basis. This is an interesting subclass of 0/1-polytopes and contains for instance edge polytopes of bipartite graphs. Our main result on totally unimodular matrices implies a sharp upper bound on the number of vertices of unimodular polytopes.

On a Conjecture Concerning the Roots of Ehrhart Polynomials of Symmetric Edge Polytopes from Complete Multipartite Graphs
In [7], Higashitani, Kummer, and Michałek pose a conjecture about the symmetric edge polytopes of complete multipartite graphs and confirm it for a number of families in the bipartite case. We confirm that conjecture for a number of new classes following the authors' methods and we present a more general result which suggests that the methods in their current form might not be enough to prove the conjecture in full generality.
Diameter reduction via arc reversal
The diameter of a directed graph is the maximum distance between any pair of vertices. We study a problem that generalizes \textsc{Oriented Diameter}: For a given directed graph and a positive integer $d$, what is the minimum number of arc reversals required to obtain a graph with diameter at most $d$? We investigate variants of this problem, considering the number of arc reversals and the target diameter as parameters. We show hardness results under certain parameter restrictions, and give polynomial time algorithms for planar and cactus graphs. This work is partly motivated by the relation between oriented diameter and the volume of directed edge polytopes, which we show to be independent.

On the Ehrhart Theory of Generalized Symmetric Edge Polytopes
The symmetric edge polytope (SEP) of a (finite, undirected) graph is a centrally symmetric lattice polytope whose vertices are defined by the edges of the graph. SEPs have been studied extensively in the past twenty years. Recently, Tóthmérész and, independently, D'Alí, Juhnke-Kubitzke, and Koch generalized the definition of an SEP to regular matroids, which are the matroids that can be represented by totally unimodular matrices. Generalized SEPs are known to have symmetric Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials, and Ohsugi and Tsuchiya conjectured that (ordinary) SEPs have nonnegative $γ$-vectors. In this article, we use combinatorial and Gröbner basis techniques to extend additional known properties of SEPs to generalized SEPs. Along the way, we show that generalized SEPs are not necessarily $γ$-nonnegative by providing explicit examples. We prove that the polytopes we construct are ``nearly'' $γ$-nonnegative in the sense that, by deleting exactly two elements from the matroid, one obtains SEPs for graphs that are $γ$-nonnegative. This provides further evidence that Ohsugi and Tsuchiya's conjecture holds in the ordinary case.

Number of facets of symmetric edge polytopes arising from join graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Symmetric edge polytopes of graphs are important object in Ehrhart theory, and have an application to Kuramoto models. In the present paper, we study the upper and lower bounds for the number of facets of symmetric edge polytopes of connected graphs conjectured by Braun and Bruegge. In particular, we show that their conjecture is true for any graph that is the join of two graphs (equivalently, for any connected graph whose complement graph is not connected). It is known that any symmetric edge polytope is a centrally symmetric reflexive polytope. Hence our results give a partial answer to Nill's conjecture: the number of facets of a $d$-dimensional reflexive polytope is at most $6^{d/2}$.
On a generalization of symmetric edge polytopes to regular matroids
Starting from any finite simple graph, one can build a reflexive polytope known as a symmetric edge polytope. The first goal of this paper is to show that symmetric edge polytopes are intrinsically matroidal objects: more precisely, we prove that two symmetric edge polytopes are unimodularly equivalent precisely when they share the same graphical matroid. The second goal is to show that one can construct a generalized symmetric edge polytope starting from every regular matroid. Just like in the usual case, we are able to find combinatorial ways to describe the facets and an explicit regular unimodular triangulation of any such polytope. Finally, we show that the Ehrhart theory of the polar of a given generalized symmetric edge polytope is tightly linked to the structure of the lattice of flows of the dual regular matroid.
Nearly Gorenstein Polytopes
In this paper, we study nearly Gorensteinness of Ehrhart rings arising from lattice polytopes. We give necessary conditions and sufficient conditions on lattice polytopes for their Ehrhart rings to be nearly Gorenstein. Using this, we give an efficient method for constructing nearly Gorenstein polytopes. Moreover, we determine the structure of nearly Gorenstein (0, 1)-polytopes and characterise nearly Gorensteinness of edge polytopes and graphic matroids.
