The equivariant Ehrhart theory of polytopes with order-two symmetries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the equivariant Ehrhart theory of families of polytopes that are invariant under a non-trivial action of the group with order two. We study families of polytopes whose equivariant $H^*$-polynomial both succeed and fail to be effective, in particular, the symmetric edge polytopes of cycles and the rational cross-polytope. The latter provides a counterexample to the effectiveness conjecture if the requirement that the vertices of the polytope have integral coordinates is loosened to allow rational coordinates. Moreover, we exhibit such a counterexample whose Ehrhart function has period one and coincides with the Ehrhart function of a lattice polytope.

Facets of Random Symmetric Edge Polytopes, Degree Sequences, and Clustering
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 25:2, Combinatorics (December 11, 2023) dmtcs:9925 • View PublicationBIB
Symmetric edge polytopes are lattice polytopes associated with finite simple graphs that are of interest in both theory and applications. We investigate the facet structure of symmetric edge polytopes for various models of random graphs. For an Erdős-Renyi random graph, we identify a threshold probability at which with high probability the symmetric edge polytope shares many facet-supporting hyperplanes with that of a complete graph. We also investigate the relationship between the average local clustering, also known as the Watts-Strogatz clustering coefficient, and the number of facets for graphs with either a fixed number of edges or a fixed degree sequence. We use well-known Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling methods to generate empirical evidence that for a fixed degree sequence, higher average local clustering in a connected graph corresponds to higher facet numbers in the associated symmetric edge polytope.

$h^*$-vectors of graph polytopes using activities of dissecting spanning trees
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 6 (2023) no. 6, pp. 1637-1651 • View PublicationBIB
Symmetric edge polytopes of graphs and root polytopes of semi-balanced digraphs are two classes of lattice polytopes whose $h^*$-polynomials have interesting properties and generalize important graph polynomials. For both classes of polytopes there are large, natural classes of dissections into unimodular simplices. These are such that the simplices correspond to certain spanning trees. We show that for any ``spanning tree dissection'' of the symmetric edge polytope of a graph, or the root polytope of a semi-balanced digraph, the $h^*$-polynomial of the polytope can be computed as a generating function of certain activities of the corresponding spanning trees. Apart from giving simple and flexible algorithms for computing these polynomials, our results also reveal that all dissections in question are surprisingly similar to each other: It turns out that the distributions of many statistics of spanning tree dissections are in fact independent of the actual dissection.

Faces of Directed Edge Polytopes
Given a finite quiver (directed graph) without loops and multiedges, the convex hull of the column vector of the incidence matrix is called the directed edge polytope and is an interesting example of lattice polytopes. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of facets of the directed edge polytope of an arbitrary finite quiver without loops and multiedges in terms of the connectivity and the existence of a rank function. Our result can be regarded as an extension of the result of Higashitani et al. on facets of symmetric edge polytopes to directed edge polytopes. When the quiver in question has a rank function, we obtain a characterization of faces of arbitrary dimensions.

Facets of Symmetric Edge Polytopes for Graphs with Few Edges
Symmetric edge polytopes, also called adjacency polytopes, are lattice polytopes determined by simple undirected graphs. We introduce the integer array \(\mathrm{maxf}(n,m)\) giving the maximum number of facets of a symmetric edge polytope for a connected graph having \(n\) vertices and \(m\) edges, and the corresponding sequence \(\mathrm{minf}(n,m)\) of minimal values. We establish formulas for the number of facets obtained in several classes of sparse graphs and provide partial progress toward conjectures that identify facet-maximizing graphs in these classes. These formulas are combinatorial in nature and lead to independently interesting observations and conjectures regarding integer sequences defined by sums of products of binomial coefficients.

Ehrhart theory of symmetric edge polytopes via ribbon structures
Using a ribbon structure of the graph, we construct a dissection of the symmetric edge polytope of a graph into unimodular simplices. Our dissection is shellable, and one can interpret the elements of the resulting $h$-vector via graph theory. This gives an elementary method for computing the $h^*$-vector of the symmetric edge polytope.
On the gamma-vector of symmetric edge polytopes

We study $γ$-vectors associated with $h^*$-vectors of symmetric edge polytopes both from a deterministic and a probabilistic point of view. On the deterministic side, we prove nonnegativity of $γ_2$ for any graph and completely characterize the case when $γ_2 = 0$. The latter also confirms a conjecture by Lutz and Nevo in the realm of symmetric edge polytopes. On the probabilistic side, we show that the $γ$-vectors of symmetric edge polytopes of most Erdős-Rényi random graphs are asymptotically almost surely nonnegative up to any fixed entry. This proves that Gal's conjecture holds asymptotically almost surely for arbitrary unimodular triangulations in this setting.

Three families of toric rings arising from posets or graphs with small class groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main objects of the present paper are (i) Hibi rings (toric rings arising from order polytopes of posets), (ii) stable set rings (toric rings arising from stable set polytopes of perfect graphs), and (iii) edge rings (toric rings arising from edge polytopes of graphs satisfying the odd cycle condition). The goal of the present paper is to analyze those three toric rings and to discuss their structures in the case where their class groups have small rank. We prove that the class groups of (i), (ii) and (iii) are torsionfree. More precisely, we give descriptions of their class groups. Moreover, we characterize the posets or graphs whose associated toric rings have rank $1$ or $2$. By using those characterizations, we discuss the differences of isomorphic classes of those toric rings with small class groups.

Facets and facet subgraphs of symmetric edge polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Symmetric edge polytopes, a.k.a. PV-type adjacency polytopes, associated with undirected graphs have been defined and studied in several seemingly independent areas including number theory, discrete geometry, and dynamical systems. In particular, the authors are motivated by the study of the algebraic Kuramoto equations of unmixed form whose Newton polytopes are the symmetric edge polytopes. The interplay between the geometric structure of symmetric edge polytopes and the topological structure of the underlying graphs has been a recurring theme in recent studies. In particular, ``facet/face subgraphs'' have emerged as one of the central concepts in describing this symmetry. Continuing along this line of inquiry we provide a complete description of the correspondence between facets/faces of a symmetric edge polytope and maximal bipartite subgraphs of the underlying connected graph.

Rigid Gorenstein toric Fano varieties arising from directed graphs
Published in Collectanea Mathematica 74 (2023), 333--351 • View PublicationBIB
A directed edge polytope $\mathcal{A}_G$ is a lattice polytope arising from root system $A_n$ and a finite directed graph $G$. If every directed edge of $G$ belongs to a directed cycle in $G$, then $\mathcal{A}_G$ is terminal and reflexive, that is, one can associate this polytope to a Gorenstein toric Fano variety $X_G$ with terminal singularities. It is shown by Totaro that a toric Fano variety which is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$ is rigid. In the present paper, we classify all directed graphs $G$ such that $X_G$ is a toric Fano variety which is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$.

Symmetric edge polytopes and matching generating polynomials
Published in Combinatorial Theory 1 (2021), #9 • View PublicationBIB
Symmetric edge polytopes $\mathcal{A}_G$ of type A are lattice polytopes arising from the root system $A_n$ and finite simple graphs $G$. There is a connection between $\mathcal{A}_G$ and the Kuramoto synchronization model in physics. In particular, the normalized volume of $\mathcal {A}_G$ plays a central role. In the present paper, we focus on a particular class of graphs. In fact, for any cactus graph $G$, we give a formula for the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{A}_{\widehat{G}}$ by using matching generating polynomials, where $\widehat{G}$ is the suspension of $G$. This gives also a formula for the normalized volume of $\mathcal{A}_{\widehat{G}}$. Moreover, via the chemical graph theory, we show that for any cactus graph $G$, the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{A}_{\widehat{G}}$ is real-rooted. Finally, we extend the discussion to symmetric edge polytopes of type $B$, which are lattice polytopes arising from the root system $B_n$ and finite simple graphs.

Graph edge contraction and subdivisions for adjacency polytopes
Adjacency polytopes, a.k.a. symmetric edge polytopes, associated with undirected graphs have been defined and studied in several seemingly independent areas including number theory, discrete geometry, and dynamical systems. In particular, the authors are motivated by the tropical intersections problem derived from the Kuramoto equations. Regular subdivisions of adjacency polytopes are instrumental in solving these problems. This paper explores connections between the regular subdivisions of an adjacency polytope and the contraction of the underlying graph along an edge. We construct a special regular subdivision whose cells are in one-to-one correspondence with facets of an adjacency polytope associated with an edge-contraction of the original graph. Moreover, this subdivision induces a decomposition of the original graph into ``cell subgraphs''. We explore the combinatorial, graph-theoretic, and matroidal aspects of this connection.
Many faces of symmetric edge polytopes
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 29 (2022), P3.24, 42 pp • View PublicationBIB
Symmetric edge polytopes are a class of lattice polytopes constructed from finite simple graphs. In the present paper we highlight their connections to the Kuramoto synchronization model in physics -- where they are called adjacency polytopes -- and to Kantorovich--Rubinstein polytopes from finite metric space theory. Each of these connections motivates the study of symmetric edge polytopes of particular classes of graphs. We focus on such classes and apply algebraic-combinatorial methods to investigate invariants of the associated symmetric edge polytopes.
Arithmetic aspects of symmetric edge polytopes
Published in Mathematika 65 (2019) 763-784 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate arithmetic, geometric and combinatorial properties of symmetric edge polytopes. We give a complete combinatorial description of their facets. By combining Gröbner basis techniques, half-open decompositions and methods for interlacing polynomials we provide an explicit formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial in case of complete bipartite graphs. In particular, we show that the $h^\ast$-polynomial is $γ$-positive and real-rooted. This proves Gal's conjecture for arbitrary flag unimodular triangulations in this case, and, beyond that, we prove a strengthing due to Nevo and Petersen (2011).

Reflexive polytopes arising from edge polytopes
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 557(2018), 438--454 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that every lattice polytope is unimodularly equivalent to a face of some reflexive polytope. A stronger question is to ask whether every $(0,1)$-polytope is unimodularly equivalent to a facet of some reflexive polytope. A large family of $(0,1)$-polytopes are the edge polytopes of finite simple graphs. In the present paper, it is shown that, by giving a new class of reflexive polytopes, each edge polytope is unimodularly equivalent to a facet of some reflexive polytope. Furthermore, we extend the characterization of normal edge polytopes to a characterization of normality for these new reflexive polytopes.
Toric rings and ideals of stable set polytopes
Published in Mathematics 7 (2019), 613 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we discuss the normality of the toric rings of stable set polytopes, and the set of generators and Gröbner bases of toric ideals of stable set polytopes by using the results on that of edge polytopes of finite nonsimple graphs. In particular, for a graph of stability number two, we give a graph theoretical characterization of the set of generators of the toric ideal of the stable set polytope, and a criterion to check whether the toric ring of the stable set polytope is normal or not. One of the application of the results is an infinite family of stable set polytopes whose toric ideal is generated by quadratic binomials and has no quadratic Gröbner bases.

Decomposable edge polytopes of finite graphs
Edge polytopes is a class of interesting polytope with rich algebraic and combinatorial properties, which was introduced by Ohsugi and Hibi. In this papar, we follow a previous study on cutting edge polytopes by Hibi, Li and Zhang. Instead of focusing on the algeraic properties of the subpolytopes as the previous study, in this paper, we take a closer look on the graphs whose edge polytopes are decomposable. In particular, we answer two important questions raised in the previous study about 1) the relationship between type I and type II decomposable graphs and 2) description of decomposable graphs.

Existence of a regular unimodular triangulation of the edge polytopes of finite graphs
In this paper we give several criteria for the edge polytope of a fundamental FHM-graph to possess a regular unimodular triangulation in terms of some simple data of the the graph. We further apply our criteria to several examples of graphs and show that their edge polytopes possess a regular unimodular triangulation.

Minkowski sum of polytopes and its normality

In this paper, we consider the normality or the integer decomposition property (IDP, for short) for Minkowski sums of integral convex polytopes. We discuss some properties on the toric rings associated with Minkowski sums of integral convex polytopes. We also study Minkowski sums of edge polytopes and give a sufficient condition for Minkowski sums of edge polytopes to have IDP.
The number of edges of the edge polytope of a finite simple graph
Published in ARS Mathematica Contemporanea 10 (2016) 323-332 • View PublicationBIB
Let $d \geq 3$ be an integer. It is known that the number of edges of the edge polytope of the complete graph with $d$ vertices is $d(d-1)(d-2)/2$. In this paper, we study the maximum possible number $μ_d$ of edges of the edge polytope arising from finite simple graphs with $d$ vertices. We show that $μ_{d}=d(d-1)(d-2)/2$ if and only if $3 \leq d \leq 14$. In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior of $μ_d$. Tran--Ziegler gave a lower bound for $μ_d$ by constructing a random graph. We succeeded in improving this bound by constructing both a non-random graph and a random graph whose complement is bipartite.
