The $cd$-index of semi-Eulerian posets
We generalize the definition of the $cd$-index of an Eulerian poset to the class of semi-Eulerian posets. For simplicial semi-Eulerian Buchsbaum posets, we show that all coefficients of the $cd$-index are non-negative. This proves a conjecture of Novik for odd dimensional manifolds and extends it to the even dimensional case.
On a generalization of symmetric edge polytopes to regular matroids
Starting from any finite simple graph, one can build a reflexive polytope known as a symmetric edge polytope. The first goal of this paper is to show that symmetric edge polytopes are intrinsically matroidal objects: more precisely, we prove that two symmetric edge polytopes are unimodularly equivalent precisely when they share the same graphical matroid. The second goal is to show that one can construct a generalized symmetric edge polytope starting from every regular matroid. Just like in the usual case, we are able to find combinatorial ways to describe the facets and an explicit regular unimodular triangulation of any such polytope. Finally, we show that the Ehrhart theory of the polar of a given generalized symmetric edge polytope is tightly linked to the structure of the lattice of flows of the dual regular matroid.
Triangulations of cosmological polytopes
A cosmological polytope is defined for a given Feynman diagram, and its canonical form may be used to compute the contribution of the Feynman diagram to the wavefunction of certain cosmological models. Given a subdivision of a polytope, its canonical form is obtained as a sum of the canonical forms of the facets of the subdivision. In this paper, we identify such formulas for the canonical form via algebraic techniques. It is shown that the toric ideal of every cosmological polytope admits a Gröbner basis with a squarefree initial ideal, yielding a regular unimodular triangulation of the polytope. In specific instances, including trees and cycles, we recover graphical characterizations of the facets of such triangulations that may be used to compute the desired canonical form. For paths and cycles, these characterizations admit simple enumeration. Hence, we obtain formulas for the normalized volume of these polytopes, extending previous observations of Kühne and Monin.
Laplacian polytopes of simplicial complexes
Given a (finite) simplicial complex, we define its $i$-th Laplacian polytope as the convex hull of the columns of its $i$-th Laplacian matrix. This extends Laplacian simplices of finite simple graphs, as introduced by Braun and Meyer. After studying basic properties of these polytopes, we focus on the $d$-th Laplacian polytope of the boundary of a $(d+1)$-simplex $\partial(σ_{d+1})$. If $d$ is odd, then as for graphs, the $d$-th Laplacian polytope turns out to be a $(d+1)$-simplex in this case. If $d$ is even, we show that the $d$-th Laplacian polytope of $\partial(σ_{d+1})$ is combinatorially equivalent to a $d$-dimensional cyclic polytope on $d+2$ vertices. Moreover, we provide an explicit regular unimodular triangulation for the $d$-th Laplacian polytope of $\partial(σ_{d+1})$. This enables us to to compute the normalized volume and to show that the $h^\ast$-polynomial is real-rooted and unimodal, if $d$ is odd and even, respectively.
Alexander duals of symmetric simplicial complexes and Stanley-Reisner Ideals
Given an ascending chain $(I_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ of $\Sym$-invariant squarefree monomial ideals, we study the corresponding chain of Alexander duals $(I_n^\vee)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$. Using a novel combinatorial tool, which we call \emph{avoidance up to symmetry}, we provide an explicit description of the minimal generating set up to symmetry in terms of the original generators. Combining this result with methods from discrete geometry, this enables us to show that the number of orbit generators of $I_n^\vee$ is given by a polynomial in $n$ for sufficiently large $n$. The same is true for the number of orbit generators of minimal degree, this degree being a linear function in $n$ eventually. The former result implies that the number of $\Sym$-orbits of primary components of $I_n$ grows polynomially in $n$ for large $n$. As another application, we show that, for each $i\geq 0$, the number of $i$-dimensional faces of the associated Stanley-Reisner complexes of $I_n$ is also given by a polynomial in $n$ for large $n$.

We study $γ$-vectors associated with $h^*$-vectors of symmetric edge polytopes both from a deterministic and a probabilistic point of view. On the deterministic side, we prove nonnegativity of $γ_2$ for any graph and completely characterize the case when $γ_2 = 0$. The latter also confirms a conjecture by Lutz and Nevo in the realm of symmetric edge polytopes. On the probabilistic side, we show that the $γ$-vectors of symmetric edge polytopes of most Erdős-Rényi random graphs are asymptotically almost surely nonnegative up to any fixed entry. This proves that Gal's conjecture holds asymptotically almost surely for arbitrary unimodular triangulations in this setting.
On the Dominant of the Multicut Polytope

Given a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a set $S \subseteq \binom{V}{2}$ of terminal pairs, the minimum multicut problem asks for a minimum edge set $δ\subseteq E$ such that there is no $s$-$t$-path in $G -δ$ for any $\{s,t\}\in S$. For $|S|=1$ this is the well known $s$-$t$-cut problem, but in general the minimum multicut problem is NP-complete, even if the input graph is a tree. The multicut polytope $\text{MultC}^\square (G,S)$ is the convex hull of all multicuts in $G$; the multicut dominant is given by $\text{MultC}(G,S)=\text{MultC}^\square (G,S)+\mathbb{R}^E$. The latter is the relevant object for the minimization problem. While polyhedra associated to several cut problems have been studied intensively there is only little knowledge for multicut.
We investigate properties of the multicut dominant and in particular derive results on liftings of facet-defining inequalities. This yields a classification of all facet-defining path- and edge inequalities. Moreover, we investigate the effect of graph operations such as node splitting, edge subdivisions, and edge contractions on the multicut-dominant and its facet-defining inequalities. In addition, we introduce facet-defining inequalities supported on stars, trees, and cycles and show that the former two can be separated in polynomial time when the input graph is a tree.
Counting Horizontal Visibility Graphs
Horizontal visibility graphs (HVGs, for short) are a common tool used in the analysis and classification of time series with applications in many scientific fields. In this article, extending previous work by Lacasa and Luque, we prove that HVGs associated to data sequences without equal entries are completely determined by their ordered degree sequence. Moreover, we show that HVGs for data sequences without and with equal entries are counted by the Catalan numbers and the large Schröder numbers, respectively.

Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, the maximum bond problem searches for a maximum cut $δ(S) \subseteq E$ with $S \subseteq V$ such that $G[S]$ and $G[V\setminus S]$ are connected. This problem is closely related to the well-known maximum cut problem and known under a variety of names such as largest bond, maximum minimal cut and maximum connected (sides) cut. The bond polytope is the convex hull of all incidence vectors of bonds. Similar to the connection of the corresponding optimization problems, the bond polytope is closely related to the cut polytope. While cut polytopes have been intensively studied, there are no results on bond polytopes. We start a structural study of the latter.
We investigate the relation between cut- and bond polytopes and study the effect of graph modifications on bond polytopes and their facets. Moreover, we study facet-defining inequalities arising from edges and cycles for bond polytopes. In particular, these yield a complete linear description of bond polytopes of cycles and $3$-connected planar $(K_5-e)$-minor free graphs. Moreover we present a reduction of the maximum bond problem on arbitrary graphs to the maximum bond problem on $3$-connected graphs. This yields a linear time algorithm for maximum bond on $(K_5-e)$-minor free graphs.

Recently, chains of increasing symmetric ideals have attracted considerable attention. In this note, we summarize some results and open problems concerning the asymptotic behavior of several algebraic and homological invariants along such chains, including codimension, projective dimension, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, and Betti tables.
Balanced squeezed Complexes
Given any order ideal $U$ consisting of color-squarefree monomials involving variables with $d$ colors, we associate to it a balanced $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)$ that we call a balanced squeezed complex. In fact, these complexes have properties similar to squeezed balls as introduced by Kalai and the more general squeezed complexes, introduced by the authors. We show that any balanced squeezed complex is vertex-decomposable and that its flag $h$-vector can be read off from the underlying order ideal. Moreover, we describe explicitly its Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_{Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)}$. If $U$ is also shifted, we determine the multigraded generic initial ideal of $I_{Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)}$ and establish that the balanced squeezed complex $Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)$ has the same graded Betti numbers as the complex obtained from color-shifting it. We also introduce a class of color-squarefree monomial ideals that may be viewed as a generalization of the classical squarefree stable monomial ideals and show that their graded Betti numbers can be read off from their minimal generators. Moreover, we develop some tools for computing graded Betti numbers.

The antiprism triangulation provides a natural way to subdivide a simplicial complex $Δ$, similar to barycentric subdivision, which appeared independently in combinatorial algebraic topology and computer science. It can be defined as the simplicial complex of chains of multi-pointed faces of $Δ$, from a combinatorial point of view, and by successively applying the antiprism construction, or balanced stellar subdivisions, on the faces of $Δ$, from a geometric point of view.
This paper studies enumerative invariants associated to this triangulation, such as the transformation of the $h$-vector of $Δ$ under antiprism triangulation, and algebraic properties of its Stanley--Reisner ring. Among other results, it is shown that the $h$-polynomial of the antiprism triangulation of a simplex is real-rooted and that the antiprism triangulation of $Δ$ has the almost strong Lefschetz property over ${\mathbb R}$ for every shellable complex $Δ$. Several related open problems are discussed.
Cut Polytopes of Minor-free Graphs
The cut polytope of a graph $G$ is the convex hull of the indicator vectors of all cuts in $G$ and is closely related to the MaxCut problem. We give the facet-description of cut polytopes of $K_{3,3}$-minor-free graphs and introduce an algorithm solving MaxCut on those graphs, which only requires the running time of planar MaxCut. Moreover, starting a systematic geometric study of cut polytopes, we classify graphs admitting a simple or simplicial cut polytope.

We prove upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial complexes. Along the way we show bounds for Cohen-Macaulay graded rings $S/I$, where $S$ is a polynomial ring and $I\subseteq S$ is an homogeneous ideal containing a certain number of generators in degree 2, including the squares of the variables. Using similar techniques we provide upper bounds for the number of linear syzygies for Stanley-Reisner of balanced normal pseudomanifolds. Moreover, we compute explicitly the graded Betti numbers of cross-polytopal stacked spheres, and show that they only depend on the dimension and the number of vertices, rather than also the combinatorial type.

Given a shifted order ideal $U$, we associate to it a family of simplicial complexes $(Δ_t(U))_{t\geq 0}$ that we call squeezed complexes. In a special case, our construction gives squeezed balls that were defined and used by Kalai to show that there are many more simplicial spheres than boundaries of simplicial polytopes. We study combinatorial and algebraic properties of squeezed complexes. In particular, we show that they are vertex decomposable and characterize when they have the weak or the strong Lefschetz property. Moreover, we define a new combinatorial invariant of pure simplicial complexes, called the singularity index, that can be interpreted as a measure of how far a given simplicial complex is from being a manifold. In the case of squeezed complexes $(Δ_t(U))_{t\geq 0}$, the singularity index turns out to be strictly decreasing until it reaches (and stays) zero if $t$ grows.
Balanced shellings and moves on balanced manifolds

A classical result by Pachner states that two $d$-dimensional combinatorial manifolds with boundary are PL homeomorphic if and only they can be connected by a sequence of shellings and inverse shellings. We prove that for balanced, i.e., properly $(d + 1)$-colored, manifolds such a sequence can be chosen such that balancedness is preserved in each step. As a key ingredient we establish that any two balanced PL homeomorphic combinatorial manifolds with the same boundary are connected by a sequence of basic cross-flips, as was shown recently by Izmestiev, Klee and Novik for balanced manifolds without boundary. Moreover, we enumerate combinatorially different basic cross-flips and show that roughly half of these suffice to relate any two PL homeomorphic manifolds.

We provide a random simplicial complex by applying standard constructions to a Poisson point process in Euclidean space. It is gigantic in the sense that - up to homotopy equivalence - it almost surely contains infinitely many copies of every compact topological manifold, both in isolation and in percolation.

In a recent paper, Duval, Goeckner, Klivans and Martin disproved the longstanding conjecture by Stanley, that every Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex is partitionable. We construct counterexamples to this conjecture that are even \emph{balanced}, i.e., their underlying graph has a minimal coloring. This answers a question by Duval et al. in the negative.

In this paper, we answer two questions on local $h$-vectors, which were asked by Athanasiadis. First, we characterize all possible local $h$-vectors of quasi-geometric subdivisions of a simplex. Second, we prove that the local $γ$-vector of the barycentric subdivision of any CW-regular subdivision of a simplex is nonnegative. Along the way, we derive a new recurrence formula for the derangement polynomials.
A generalized lower bound theorem for balanced manifolds

A simplicial complex of dimension $d-1$ is said to be balanced if its graph is $d$-colorable. Juhnke-Kubitzke and Murai proved an analogue of the generalized lower bound theorem for balanced simplicial polytopes. We establish a generalization of their result to balanced triangulations of closed homology manifolds and balanced triangulations of orientable homology manifolds with boundary under an additional assumption that all proper links of these triangulations have the weak Lefschetz property. As a corollary, we show that if $Δ$ is an arbitrary balanced triangulation of any closed homology manifold of dimension $d-1 \geq 3$, then $2h_2(Δ) - (d-1)h_1(Δ) \geq 4{d \choose 2}(\tildeβ_1(Δ)-\tildeβ_0(Δ))$, thus verifying a conjecture by Klee and Novik. To prove these results we develop the theory of flag $h''$-vectors.
