Lefschetz properties of balanced 3-polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study Lefschetz properties of Artinian reductions of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial $3$-polytopes. A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex is said to be balanced if its graph is $d$-colorable. If a simplicial complex is balanced, then its Stanley-Reisner ring has a special system of parameters induced by the coloring. We prove that the Artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a balanced simplicial $3$-polytope with respect to this special system of parameters has the strong Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is not two or three. Moreover, we characterize $(2,1)$-balanced simplicial polytopes, i.e., polytopes with exactly one red vertex and two blue vertices in each facet, such that an analogous property holds. In fact, we show that this is the case if and only if the induced graph on the blue vertices satisfies a Laman-type combinatorial condition.

Flawlessness of $h$-vectors of broken circuit complexes

One of the major open questions in matroid theory asks whether the $h$-vector $(h_0,h_1,\ldots,h_s)$ of the broken circuit complex of a matroid $M$ satisfies the following inequalities: $$ h_0\leq h_1\leq \cdots\leq h_{\lfloor s/2\rfloor} \quad \text{and}\qua h_i\le h_{s-i}\ \text{ for }\ 0\leq i \leq \lfloor s/2\rfloor. $$ This paper affirmatively answers the question for matroids that are representable over a field of characteristic zero.

Intersections of Amoebas
Published • View PublicationBIB
Amoebas are projections of complex algebraic varieties in the algebraic torus under a Log-absolute value map, which have connections to various mathematical subjects. While amoebas of hypersurfaces have been intensively studied in recent years, the non-hypersurface case is barely understood so far. We investigate intersections of amoebas of $n$ hypersurfaces in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$, which are canonical supersets of amoebas given by non-hypersurface varieties. Our main results are amoeba analogs of Bernstein's Theorem and Bézout's Theorem providing an upper bound for the number of connected components of such intersections. Moreover, we show that the \emph{order map} for hypersurface amoebas can be generalized in a natural way to intersections of amoebas. In particular, analogous to the case of amoebas of hypersurfaces, the restriction of this generalized order map to a single connected component is still $1$-to-$1$.
Mixed Ehrhart polynomials

For lattice polytopes $P_1,\ldots, P_k \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$, Bihan (2014) introduced the discrete mixed volume $\mathrm{DMV}(P_1,\dots,P_k)$ in analogy to the classical mixed volume. In this note we initiate the study of the associated mixed Ehrhart polynomial $\mathrm{ME}_{P_1,\dots,P_k}(n) = \mathrm{DMV}(nP_1,\dots,nP_k)$. We study properties of this polynomial and we give interpretations for some of its coefficients in terms of (discrete) mixed volumes. Bihan (2014) showed that the discrete mixed volume is always non-negative. Our investigations yield simpler proofs for certain special cases. We also introduce and study the associated mixed $h^*$-vector. We show that for large enough dilates $r P_1, \ldots, rP_k$ the corresponding mixed $h^*$-polynomial has only real roots and as a consequence the mixed $h^*$-vector becomes non-negative.
Algebraic properties of ideals of poset homomorphisms

Given finite posets $P$ and $Q$, we consider a specific ideal $L(P,Q)$, whose minimal monomial generators correspond to order-preserving maps $φ:P\rightarrow Q$. We study algebraic invariants of those ideals. In particular, sharp lower and upper bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the projective dimension are provided. Precise formulas are obtained for a large subclass of these ideals. Moreover, we provide complete characterizations for several algebraic properties of $L(P,Q)$, including being Buchsbaum, Cohen-Macaulay, Gorenstein and having a linear resolution. We also give a partial characterization for Golod property of $L(P,Q)$. Using those results, we derive applications for other important classes of monomial ideals, such as initial ideals of determinantal ideals and multichain ideals.

Balanced generalized lower bound inequality for simplicial polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A remarkable and important property of face numbers of simplicial polytopes is the generalized lower bound inequality, which says that the $h$-numbers of any simplicial polytope are unimodal. Recently, for balanced simplicial $d$-polytopes, that is simplicial $d$-polytopes whose underlying graphs are $d$-colorable, Klee and Novik proposed a balanced analogue of this inequality, that is stronger than just unimodality. The aim of this article is to prove this conjecture of Klee and Novik. For this, we also show a Lefschetz property for rank-selected subcomplexes of balanced simplicial polytopes and thereby obtain new inequalities for their $h$-numbers.
Asymptotic syzygies of Stanley-Reisner rings of iterated subdivisions

Inspired by recent results of Ein, Lazarsfeld, Erman and Zhou on the non-vanishing of Betti numbers of high Veronese subrings, we describe the behaviour of the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with iterated barycentric or edgewise subdivisions of a given simplicial complex. Our results show that for a simplicial complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$ and for $1\leq j\leq d-1$ the number of $0$'s the j-th linear strand of the minimal free resolution of the r-th barycentric or edgewise subdivision is bounded above only in terms of $d$ and $j$ (and independently of $r$).
