In this paper, we study Lefschetz properties of Artinian reductions of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial $3$-polytopes. A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex is said to be balanced if its graph is $d$-colorable. If a simplicial complex is balanced, then its Stanley-Reisner ring has a special system of parameters induced by the coloring. We prove that the Artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a balanced simplicial $3$-polytope with respect to this special system of parameters has the strong Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is not two or three. Moreover, we characterize $(2,1)$-balanced simplicial polytopes, i.e., polytopes with exactly one red vertex and two blue vertices in each facet, such that an analogous property holds. In fact, we show that this is the case if and only if the induced graph on the blue vertices satisfies a Laman-type combinatorial condition.

Using a connection to lozenge tilings of triangular regions, we establish an easily checkable criterion that guarantees the weak Lefschetz property of a quotient by a monomial ideal. It is also shown that each such ideal also has a semistable syzygy bundle.

The SHGH conjecture proposes a solution to the question of how many conditions a general union of fat points imposes on the complete linear system of curves in $\mathbb P^2$ of fixed degree $d$, and it is known to be true in many cases. We propose a new problem, namely to understand the number of conditions imposed by a general union of fat points on the incomplete linear system defined by the condition of passing through a given finite set of points $Z$ (not general). Motivated by work of Di Gennaro-Ilardi-Vallès and Faenzi-Vallès, we give a careful analysis for the case where there is a single general fat point, which has multiplicity $d-1$. There is an expected number of conditions imposed by this fat point, and we study those $Z$ for which this expected value is not achieved. We show, for instance, that if $Z$ is in linear general position then such unexpected curves do not exist. We give criteria for the occurrence of such unexpected curves and describe the range of values of $d$ for which they occur. Unexpected curves have a very particular structure, which we describe, and they are often unique for a given set of points. In particular, we give a criterion for when they are irreducible, and we exhibit examples both where they are reducible and where they are irreducible. Furthermore, we relate properties of $Z$ to properties of the arrangement of lines dual to the points of $Z$. In particular, we obtain a new interpretation of the splitting type of a line arrangement. Finally, we use our results to establish a Lefschetz-like criterion for Terao's conjecture on the freeness of line arrangements.

In this work a combinatorial approach towards the weak Lefschetz property is developed that relates this property to enumerations of signed perfect matchings as well as to enumerations of signed families of non-intersecting lattice paths in certain triangular regions. This connection is used to study Artinian quotients by monomial ideals of a three-dimensional polynomial ring. Extending a main result in the recent memoir [Boij, Migliore, Miró-Roig, Nagel, Zanello], we completely classify the quotients of type two that have the weak Lefschetz property in characteristic zero. We also derive results in positive characteristic for quotients whose type is at most two.

It is well-known that plane partitions, lozenge tilings of a hexagon, perfect matchings on a honeycomb graph, and families of non-intersecting lattice paths in a hexagon are all in bijection. In this work we consider regions that are more general than hexagons. They are obtained by further removing upward-pointing triangles. We call the resulting shapes triangular regions. We establish signed versions of the latter three bijections for triangular regions. We first investigate the tileability of triangular regions by lozenges. Then we use perfect matchings and families of non-intersecting lattice paths to define two signs of a lozenge tiling. Using a new method that we call resolution of a puncture, we show that the two signs are in fact equivalent. As a consequence, we obtain the equality of determinants, up to sign, that enumerate signed perfect matchings and signed families of lattice paths of a triangular region, respectively. We also describe triangular regions, for which the signed enumerations agree with the unsigned enumerations.

A finite projective plane, or more generally a finite linear space, has an associated incidence complex that gives rise to two natural algebras: the Stanley-Reisner ring $R/I_Λ$ and the inverse system algebra $R/I_Δ$. We give a careful study of both of these algebras. Our main results are a full description of the graded Betti numbers of both algebras in the more general setting of linear spaces (giving the result for the projective planes as a special case), and a classification of the characteristics in which the inverse system algebra associated to a finite projective plane has the Weak or Strong Lefschetz Property.
On decomposing Betti tables and $O$-sequences

The Boij-Söderberg characterization decomposes a Betti table into a unique positive integral linear combination of pure diagrams. Given a module with a pure resolution, we describe explicit formulae for computing the decomposition of the Betti table of the module given the decomposition of the truncation of the Betti table, and vice versa.
Nagel and Sturgeon described the decomposition of Betti tables of ideals with $d$-linear resolutions; indeed, the coefficients are precisely finite $O$-sequences. Using the extension formulae, we provide an explicit description of the coefficients of the decomposition of the Betti table of the quotient ring of such an ideal. Following from this, we describe the closed convex simplicial cone of $O$-sequences.
The uniform face ideals of a simplicial complex
We define the uniform face ideal of a simplicial complex with respect to an ordered proper vertex colouring of the complex. This ideal is a monomial ideal which is generally not squarefree. We show that such a monomial ideal has a linear resolution, as do all of its powers, if and only if the colouring satisfies a certain nesting property.
In the case when the colouring is nested, we give a minimal cellular resolution supported on a cubical complex. From this, we give the graded Betti numbers in terms of the face-vector of the underlying simplicial complex. Moreover, we explicitly describe the Boij-Söderberg decompositions of both the ideal and its quotient. We also give explicit formulæ for the codimension, Krull dimension, multiplicity, projective dimension, depth, and regularity. Further still, we describe the associated primes, and we show that they are persistent.
Nested colourings of graphs
A proper vertex colouring of a graph is \emph{nested} if the vertices of each of its colour classes can be ordered by inclusion of their open neighbourhoods. Through a relation to partially ordered sets, we show that the nested chromatic number can be computed in polynomial time.
Clearly, the nested chromatic number is an upper bound for the chromatic number of a graph. We develop multiple distinct bounds on the nested chromatic number using common properties of graphs. We also determine the behaviour of the nested chromatic number under several graph operations, including the direct, Cartesian, strong, and lexicographic product. Moreover, we classify precisely the possible nested chromatic numbers of graphs on a fixed number of vertices with a fixed chromatic number.
Enumerations of lozenge tilings, lattice paths, and perfect matchings and the weak Lefschetz property
MacMahon enumerated the plane partitions in an $a \times b \times c$ box. These are in bijection to lozenge tilings of a hexagon, to certain perfect matchings, and to families of non-intersecting lattice paths. In this work we consider more general regions, called triangular regions, and establish signed versions of the latter three bijections. Indeed, we use perfect matchings and families of non-intersecting lattice paths to define two signs of a lozenge tiling. A combinatorial argument involving a new method, called resolution of a puncture, then shows that the signs are in fact equivalent. This provides in particular two different determinantal enumerations of these families. These results are then applied to study the weak Lefschetz property of Artinian quotients by monomial ideals of a three-dimensional polynomial ring. We establish sufficient conditions guaranteeing the weak Lefschetz property as well as the semistability of the syzygy bundle of the ideal, classify the type two algebras with the weak Lefschetz property, and study monomial almost complete intersections in depth. Furthermore, we develop a general method that often associates to an algebra that fails the weak Lefschetz property a toric surface that satisfies a Laplace equation. We also present examples of toric varieties that satisfy arbitrarily many Laplace equations. Our combinatorial methods allow us to address the dependence on the characteristic of the base field for many of our results.

We introduce the package Posets for Macaulay2. This package provides a data structure and the necessary methods for working with partially ordered sets, also called posets. In particular, the package implements methods to enumerate many commonly studied classes of posets, perform operations on posets, and calculate various invariants associated to posets.
Enumerations deciding the weak Lefschetz property
We introduce a natural correspondence between artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables and punctured hexagonal regions. We use this correspondence to investigate the algebras for the presence of the weak Lefschetz property. In particular, we relate the field characteristics in which such an algebra fails to have the weak Lefschetz property to the prime divisors of the enumeration of signed lozenge tilings of the associated punctured hexagonal region. On the one side this allows us to establish the weak Lefschetz property in many new cases.
For numerous classes of punctured hexagonal regions we find closed formulae for the enumerations of signed lozenge tilings, and thus the field characteristics in which the associated algebras fail to the have the weak Lefschetz property. Further, we offer a conjecture for a closed formula for the enumerations of signed lozenge tilings of symmetric punctured hexagonal regions. These formulae are exploited to lend further evidence to a conjecture by Migliore, Miró-Roig, and the second author that classifies the {\em level} artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables that have the weak Lefschetz property in characteristic zero. Moreover, the formulae are used to generate families of algebras which never, or always, have the weak Lefschetz property, regardless of field characteristic. Finally, we determine (in one case, depending on the presence of the weak Lefschetz property) the splitting type of the syzygy bundle of an artinian monomial almost complete intersection in three variables, when the characteristic of the base field is zero.
Our results convey an intriguing interplay between problems in algebra, combinatorics, and algebraic geometry, which raises new questions and deserves further investigation.

We introduce a new Macaulay2 package, Nauty, which gives access to powerful methods on graphs provided by the software nauty by Brendan McKay. The primary motivation for accessing nauty is to determine if two graphs are isomorphic. We also implement methods to generate families of graphs restricted in various ways using tools provided with the software nauty.

Boij and Söderberg made a pair of conjectures, which were subsequently proven by Eisenbud and Schreyer and then extended by Boij and Söderberg, about the structure of Betti diagrams of Graded modules. In the theory, a particular family of posets, and their associated order complexes, play an integral role. We explore the structure of this family. In particular, we show the posets are bounded complete lattices and the order complexes are vertex-decomposable, hence Cohen-Macaulay and squarefree glicci.

We introduce a construction on a flag complex that, by means of modifying the associated graph, generates a new flag complex whose $h$-factor is the face vector of the original complex. This construction yields a vertex-decomposable, hence Cohen-Macaulay, complex. From this we get a (non-numerical) characterisation of the face vectors of flag complexes and deduce also that the face vector of a flag complex is the $h$-vector of some vertex-decomposable flag complex. We conjecture that the converse of the latter is true and prove this, by means of an explicit construction, for $h$-vectors of Cohen-Macaulay flag complexes arising from bipartite graphs. We also give several new characterisations of bipartite graphs with Cohen-Macaulay or Buchsbaum independence complexes.

We introduce a new Macaulay 2 package, SimplicialDecomposability, which works in conjunction with the extant package SimplicialComplexes in order to compute a shelling order, if one exists, of a specified simplicial complex. Further, methods for determining vertex-decomposability are implemented, along with methods for determining k-decomposability.

We study the weak Lefschetz property and the Hilbert function of level Artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables. Several such families are shown to have the weak Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is zero or greater than the maximal degree of any minimal generator of the ideal. Two of the families have an interesting relation to tilings of hexagons by lozenges. This lends further evidence to a conjecture by Migliore, Miro-Roig, and the second author. Finally, using our results about the weak Lefschetz property, we show that the Hilbert function of each level Artinian monomial almost complete intersection in three variables is peaked strictly unimodal.
