Empty simplices of large width
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e21 • View PublicationBIB
An empty simplex is a lattice simplex in which vertices are the only lattice points. We show two constructions leading to the first known empty simplices of width larger than their dimension: - We introduce cyclotomic simplices and exhaustively compute all the cyclotomic simplices of dimension $10$ and volume up to $2^{31}$. Among them we find five empty ones of width $11$, and none of larger width. - Using circulant matrices of a very specific form, we construct empty simplices of arbitrary dimension $d$ and width growing asymptotically as $d/\operatorname{arcsinh}(1) \sim 1.1346\,d$.
The path-missing and path-free complexes of a directed graph
We study two simplicial complexes arising from a directed graph $G = (V, E)$ with two chosen vertices $s$ and $t$: the *path-free complex*, consisting of all subsets $F \subseteq E$ that contain no path from $s$ to $t$, and the *path-missing complex*, its Alexander dual. Using discrete Morse theory, we prove that both complexes have well-behaved homotopy types -- either contractible or homotopy-equivalent to spheres.

Graded Cohen-Macaulay domains and lattice polytopes with short $h$-vector
Let P be a lattice polytope with $h^*$-vector $(1, h^*_1, h^*_2)$. In this note we show that if $h_2^* \leq h_1^*$, then $P$ is IDP. More generally, we show the corresponding statements for semi-standard graded Cohen-Macaulay domains over algebraically closed fields.

The Lecture Hall Cone as a toric deformation
The Lecture Hall cone is a simplicial cone whose lattice points naturally correspond to Lecture Hall partitions. The celebrated Lecture Hall Theorem of Bousquet-Mélou and Eriksson states that a particular specialization of its multivariate Ehrhart series factors in a very nice and unexpected way. Over the years, several proofs of this result have been found, but it is still not considered to be well-understood from a geometric perspective. In this note we propose two conjectures which aim at clarifying this result. Our main conjecture is that the Ehrhart ring of the Lecture Hall cone is actually an initial subalgebra $A_n$ of a certain subalgebra of a polynomial ring, which is itself isomorphic to a polynomial ring. As passing to initial subalgebras does not affect the Hilbert function, this explains the observed factorization. We give a recursive definition of certain Laurent polynomials, which generate the algebra $A_n$. Our second conjecture is that these Laurent polynomials are in fact polynomials. We computationally verified that both conjectures hold for Lecture Hall partitions of length at most 12.
Smooth centrally symmetric polytopes in dimension 3 are IDP
Published in Ann. Comb. 23 (2019), no. 2, 255-262 • View PublicationBIB
In 1997 Oda conjectured that every smooth lattice polytope has the integer decomposition property. We prove Oda's conjecture for centrally symmetric $3$-dimensional polytopes, by showing they are covered by lattice parallelepipeds and unimodular simplices.

Spanning Lattice Polytopes and the Uniform Position Principle
A lattice polytope $P$ is called IDP if any lattice point in its $k$th dilate is a sum of $k$ lattice points in $P$. In 1991 Stanley proved a strong inequality in Ehrhart theory for IDP lattice polytopes. We show that his conclusion holds under much milder assumptions, namely if the lattice polytope $P$ is spanning, i.e., any lattice point of the ambient lattice is an integer affine combination of lattice points in $P$. As an application, we get a generalization of Hibi's Lower Bound Theorem. Our proof relies on generalizing Bertini's theorem to the semistandard situation and Harris' Uniform Position Principle to certain curves in weighted projective space.

On f- and h- vectors of relative simplicial complexes
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 2 (2019) no. 3, p. 343-353 • View PublicationBIB
A relative simplicial complex is a collection of sets of the form $Δ\setminus Γ$, where $Γ\subset Δ$ are simplicial complexes. Relative complexes played key roles in recent advances in algebraic, geometric, and topological combinatorics but, in contrast to simplicial complexes, little is known about their general combinatorial structure. In this paper, we address a basic question in this direction and give a characterization of $f$-vectors of relative (multi)complexes on a ground set of fixed size. On the algebraic side, this yields a characterization of Hilbert functions of quotients of homogeneous ideals over polynomial rings with a fixed number of indeterminates. Moreover, we characterize $h$-vectors of fully Cohen--Macaulay relative complexes as well as $h$-vectors of Cohen--Macaulay relative complexes with minimal faces of given dimensions. The latter resolves a question of Björner.

Linear maps in minimal free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings
Published in Mathematics 2019, 7(7), 605., Special Issue "Current Trends on Monomial and Binomial Ideals" • View PublicationBIB
In this short note we give an elementary description of the linear part of the minimal free resolution of a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex $Δ$. Indeed, the differentials in the linear part are simply a compilation of restriction maps in the simplicial cohomology of induced subcomplexes of $Δ$. Along the way, we also show that if a monomial ideal has at least one generator of degree $2$, then the linear strand of its minimal free resolution can be written using only $\pm 1$ coefficients.

Ehrhart Theory of Spanning Lattice Polytopes
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2018, no. 19, 5947-5973 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice polytope is called spanning if its lattice points affinely span the ambient lattice. We show as a corollary to a general result in the Ehrhart theory of lattice polytopes that the $h^*$-vector of a spanning lattice polytope has no gaps, i. e., $h^*_i =0$ implies $h^*_{i+1}=0$. This generalizes a recent result by Blekherman, Smith, and Velasco, and implies a polyhedral consequence of the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture. We also discuss how this relates to unimodality questions of lattice polytopes and previously achieved decomposition results on lattice polytopes of given degree.
Which series are Hilbert series of graded modules over polynomial rings?
Published in Mathematische Nachrichten 293(1), pp. 129-146 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Let $S$ be a multigraded polynomial ring such that the degree of each variable is a unit vector; so $S$ is the homogeneous coordinate ring of a product of projective spaces. In this setting, we characterize the formal Laurent series which arise as Hilbert series of finitely generated $S$-modules. Also we provide necessary conditions for a formal Laurent series to be the Hilbert series of a finitely generated module with a given depth. In the bigraded case (corresponding to the product of two projective spaces), we completely classify the Hilbert series of finitely generated modules of positive depth.

A non-Golod ring with a trivial product on its Koszul homology
We present a monomial ideal $\mathfrak{a} \subset S$ such that $S/\mathfrak{a}$ is not Golod, even though the product on its Koszul homology is trivial. This constitutes a counterexample to a well-known result by Berglund and Jöllenbeck (the error can be traced to a mistake in an earlier article by Jöllenbeck). On the positive side, we show that if $R$ is a monomial ring such that the $r$-ary Massey product vanish for all $r \leq \max(2, \mathrm{reg} R-2)$, then $R$ is Golod. In particular, if $R$ is the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex of dimension at most $3$, then $R$ is Golod if and only if the product on its Koszul homology is trivial. Moreover, we show that if $Δ$ is a triangulation of a $\Bbbk$-orientable manifold whose Stanley-Reisner ring is Golod, then $Δ$ is $2$-neighborly. This extends a recent result of Iriye and Kishimoto.

Betti posets and the Stanley depth
Published in Arnold Mathematical Journal 2(2), 267-276 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring and let $I \subseteq S$ be a monomial ideal. In this short note, we propose the conjecture that the Betti poset of $I$ determines the Stanley projective dimension of $S/I$ or $I$. Our main result is that this conjecture implies the Stanley conjecture for $I$, and it also implies that \[ \operatorname{sdepth} S/I \geq \operatorname{depth} S/I - 1.\] Recently, Duval et al. found a counterexample to the Stanley conjecture, and their counterexample satisfies $\operatorname{sdepth} S/I = \operatorname{depth} S/I - 1$. So if our conjecture is true, then the conclusion is best possible.
Algebraic properties of ideals of poset homomorphisms
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given finite posets $P$ and $Q$, we consider a specific ideal $L(P,Q)$, whose minimal monomial generators correspond to order-preserving maps $φ:P\rightarrow Q$. We study algebraic invariants of those ideals. In particular, sharp lower and upper bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the projective dimension are provided. Precise formulas are obtained for a large subclass of these ideals. Moreover, we provide complete characterizations for several algebraic properties of $L(P,Q)$, including being Buchsbaum, Cohen-Macaulay, Gorenstein and having a linear resolution. We also give a partial characterization for Golod property of $L(P,Q)$. Using those results, we derive applications for other important classes of monomial ideals, such as initial ideals of determinantal ideals and multichain ideals.

The Golod property for Stanley-Reisner rings in varying characteristic
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra, 220(6), 2265-2276 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Golod property of a Stanley-Reisner ring can depend on the characteristic of the base field. More precisely, for every finite set $T$ of prime numbers we construct simplicial complexes $Δ$ and $Γ$, such that $\mathbb{K}[Δ]$ is Golod exactly in the characteristics in $T$ and $\mathbb{K}[Γ]$ is Golod exactly in the characteristics not in $T$. Along the way, we show that a one-dimensional simplicial complex is Golod if and only if it is chordal.

Stanley depth and simplicial spanning trees
We show that for proving the Stanley conjecture, it is sufficient to consider a very special class of monomial ideals. These ideals (or rather their lcm lattices) are in bijection with the simplicial spanning trees of skeletons of a simplex. We apply this result to verify the Stanley conjecture for quotients of monomial ideals with up to six generators. For seven generators we obtain a partial result.

The Stanley Depth in the Upper Half of the Koszul Complex
Let $R = K[X_1, ..., X_n]$ be a polynomial ring over some field $K$. In this paper, we prove that the $k$-th syzygy module of the residue class field $K$ of $R$ has Stanley depth $n-1$ for $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor \leq k < n$, as it had been conjectured by Bruns et. al. in 2010. In particular, this gives the Stanley depth for a whole family of modules whose graded components have dimension greater than $1$. So far, the Stanley depth is known only for a few examples of this type. Our proof consists in a close analysis of a matching in the Boolean algebra.

Two lower bounds for the Stanley depth of monomial ideals
Let $J\varsubsetneq I$ be two monomial ideals of the polynomial ring $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. In this paper, we provide two lower bounds for the Stanley depth of $I/J$. On the one hand, we introduce the notion of lcm number of $I/J$, denoted by $l(I/J)$, and prove that the inequality ${\rm sdepth}(I/J)\geq n-l(I/J)+1$ hold. On the other hand, we show that ${\sdepth}(I/J)\geq n-\dim L_{I/J}$, where $\dim L_{I/J}$ denotes the order dimension of the lcm lattice of $I/J$. We show that $I$ and $S/I$ satisfy Stanley's conjecture, if either the lcm number of $I$ or the order dimension of the lcm lattice of $I$ is small enough. Among other results, we also prove that the Stanley--Reisner ideal of a vertex decomposable simplicial complex satisfies Stanley's conjecture.
Hilbert series of modules over positively graded polynomials rings
In this note, we give examples of formal power series satisfying certain conditions that cannot be realized as Hilbert series of finitely generated modules. This answers to the negative a question raised in a recent article by the second and the third author. On the other hand, we show that the answer is positive after multiplication with a scalar.

Non-normal affine monoids
Published in Manuscripta Mathematica, Vol. 146 (2015) no. 1-2, 223-233 • Search Publication
We give a geometric description of the set of holes in a non-normal affine monoid $Q$. The set of holes turns out to be related to the non-trivial graded components of the local cohomology of $k[Q]$. From this, we see how various properties of $k[Q]$ like local normality and Serre's conditions $(R_1)$ and $(S_2)$ are encoded in the geometry of the holes. A combinatorial upper bound for the depth the monoid algebra $k[Q]$ is obtained and some cases where equality holds are identified. We apply this results to seminormal affine monoids.
