A Join-Matching Theorem for Squarefree Powers of Edge Ideals, with Applications to Wheel and Related Graphs
For $q\ge 1$, the $q$-th squarefree power $I(G)^{[q]}$ of the edge ideal of a graph $G$ is generated by the squarefree monomials supported on $q$-matchings of $G$; it is the Stanley--Reisner ideal of the complex $Δ_q(G)=\{F\subseteq V(G):ν(G[F])<q\}$, where $ν$ denotes matching number. We prove a general formula for the matching number of an arbitrary graph join, \[ ν(G\ast H) = \min\Big(ν(G)+|V(H)|,\ \ ν(H)+|V(G)|,\ \ \Big\lfloor\tfrac{|V(G)|+|V(H)|}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big), \] via the Tutte--Berge formula, and use it to decompose $Δ_q(G\ast H)$ for arbitrary graphs $G,H$. Specializing to the wheel graph $\mathcal{W}_n = \mathcal{C}_n\ast\mathcal K_1$, we determine the Krull dimension and height of $R/I(\mathcal{W}_n)^{[q]}$ exactly for all $n\ge 3$, $1\le q\le\lfloor n/2\rfloor$, and -- combining our matching-number computations with a recent Tutte-type Cohen-Macaulayness criterion of Ficarra and Moradi -- prove that at the \emph{top} squarefree power $q=ν(\mathcal{W}_n)=\lceil n/2\rceil$, the ideal $I(\mathcal{W}_n)^{[ν(\mathcal{W}_n)]}$ is literally the squarefree Veronese ideal, so that $R/I(\mathcal{W}_n)^{[ν(\mathcal{W}_n)]}$ is Cohen-Macaulay with \[ {\rm dim} = {\rm depth} = {\rm reg}\big(R/I(\mathcal{W}_n)^{[ν(\mathcal{W}_n)]}\big) = 2\Big\lceil\frac n2\Big\rceil-1. \] This resolves all four classical invariants at the top power, and confirms there the pattern depth$(R/I(\mathcal{W}_n)^{[q]}) = 2q-1$ that our computational data (now extended to $n\le13$, every valid $q$) suggests holds throughout. We prove a general depth formula for squarefree powers of cone graphs, via a Betti-splitting exact sequence, that reduces this pattern to two more tractable statements about the underlying cycle alone; both are verified computationally in every case checked but left open in general.

The Serre depth of Stanley-Reisner rings and the depth of their symbolic powers
We investigate an invariant, called the Serre depth, from the perspective of combinatorial commutative algebra. In this paper, we establish several properties of an analogue of the depth of Stanley-Reisner rings. In particular, we relate the Serre depth both to the minimal free resolution of a Stanley-Reisner ring and to that of its Alexander dual. Also, we establish an analogue of a known result that describes the depth of Stanley-Reisner rings in terms of skeletons. Moreover, we study the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ and the depth on the symbolic powers of Stanley--Reisner ideals. It had been an open question whether the depth of the symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals satisfies a non-increasing property, but Nguyen and Trung provided a negative answer. We construct an example that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ and the depth do not satisfy this property and its second symbolic power is Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover, we prove that the sequence of the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on the symbolic powers is convergent and that its limit coincides with the minimum value. Finally, we study the Serre depth on edge and cover ideals. Whether the depth on symbolic powers of edge ideals satisfies a non-increasing property has remained an open question. We address a related problem and show that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on edge ideals of any well-covered graph satisfies a non-increasing property. In addition, we prove that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on the cover ideals of any graph also satisfies a non-increasing property. Moreover, we determine the Serre depth on edge ideals of very well-covered graphs.

Ordinary and symbolic powers of matroids via polarization
In this paper, we propose a uniform approach to tackle problems about squarefree monomial ideals whose powers have good properties. We employ this approach to achieve a twofold goal: (i) recover and extend several well--known results in the literature, especially regarding Stanley--Reisner ideals of matroids, and (ii) provide short, elementary proofs for these results. Among them, we provide simple proofs of two celebrated results of Minh and Trung, Varbaro, and Terai and Trung elegantly characterizing the Cohen-Macaulay property, or even Serre's condition $(S_2)$, of symbolic and ordinary powers of squarefree monomial ideals in terms of their combinatorial (matroidal) structure. Our work relies on the interplay of several combinatorial and algebraic concepts, including dualities, polarizations, Serre's conditions, matroids, Hochster-Huneke graphs, vertex decomposability, and careful choices of monomial orders.
Three invariants of geometrically vertex decomposable ideals
Published in Pacific J. Math. 333 (2024) 357-390 • View PublicationBIB
We study three invariants of geometrically vertex decomposable ideals: the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, the multiplicity, and the $a$-invariant. We show that these invariants can be computed recursively using the ideals that appear in the geometric vertex decomposition process. As an application, we prove that the $a$-invariant of a geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is non-positive. We also recover some previously known results in the literature including a formula for the regularity of the Stanley--Reisner ideal of a pure vertex decomposable simplicial complex, and proofs that some well-known families of ideals are Hilbertian. Finally, we apply our recursions to the study of toric ideals of bipartite graphs. Included among our results on this topic is a new proof for a known bound on the $a$-invariant of a toric ideal of a bipartite graph.

The Stanley-Reisner ideal of the rook complex of polyominoes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the properties of the rook complex $\mathcal{R}$ of a polyomino $\mathcal{P}$ seen as independence complex of a graph $G$, and the associated Stanley--Reisner ideal $I_\mathcal{R}$. In particular, we characterize the polyominoes $\mathcal{P}$ having a pure rook complex, and the ones whose Stanley--Reisner ideal has linear resolution. Furthermore, we prove that for a class of polyominoes the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $I_\mathcal{R}$ coincides with the induced matching number of $G$.

Characteristic dependence of syzygies of random monomial ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
When do syzygies depend on the characteristic of the field? Even for well-studied families of examples, very little is known. For a family of random monomial ideals, namely the Stanley--Reisner ideals of random flag complexes, we prove that the Betti numbers asymptotically almost always depend on the characteristic. Using this result, we also develop a heuristic for characteristic dependence of asymptotic syzygies of algebraic varieties.

The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-Number of a Simplicial Complex
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Δ$ be a simplicial complex on $[n]$. The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-complex of $Δ$ is the simplicial complex $δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$ on $[n]$ for which the facet ideal of $Δ$ is equal to the Stanley--Reisner ideal of $δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$. Furthermore, for each $k = 2,3,\ldots$\,, we introduce {\em $k^{th}$ $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-complex} $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$ which is inductively defined by $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(δ^{(k-1)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ))$ with setting $δ^{(1)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$. One can set $δ^{(0)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = Δ$. The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of $Δ$ is the smallest integer $k > 0$ for which $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) \simeq Δ$. In the present paper we are especially interested in the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of a finite graph, which can be regraded as a simplicial complex of dimension one. It is shown that the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of the finite graph $K_n\coprod K_m$ on $[n + m]$, which is the disjoint union of the complete graphs $K_n$ on $[n]$ and $K_m$ on $[m]$, where $n \geq 2$ and $m \geq 2$ with $(n,m) \neq (2,2)$, is equal to $n + m + 2$. Its corollary says that the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$ on $[n+m]$ is also equal to $n + m + 2$.

Combinatorial study of stable categories of graded Cohen--Macaulay modules over skew quadric hypersurfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a new connection between representation theory of noncommutative hypersurfaces and combinatorics. Let $S$ be a graded ($\pm 1$)-skew polynomial algebra in $n$ variables of degree $1$ and $f =x_1^2 + \cdots +x_n^2 \in S$. We prove that the stable category $\mathsf{\underline{CM}}^{\mathbb Z}(S/(f))$ of graded maximal Cohen--Macaulay module over $S/(f)$ can be completely computed using the four graphical operations. As a consequence, $\mathsf{\underline{CM}}^{\mathbb Z}(S/(f))$ is equivalent to the derived category $\mathsf{D^b}(\operatorname{\mathsf{mod}} k^{2^r})$, and this $r$ is obtained as the nullity of a certain matrix over ${\mathbb F}_2$. Using the properties of Stanley--Reisner ideals, we also show that the number of irreducible components of the point scheme of $S$ that are isomorphic to ${\mathbb P}^1$ is less than or equal to $\binom{r+1}{2}$.

Two lower bounds for the Stanley depth of monomial ideals
Let $J\varsubsetneq I$ be two monomial ideals of the polynomial ring $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. In this paper, we provide two lower bounds for the Stanley depth of $I/J$. On the one hand, we introduce the notion of lcm number of $I/J$, denoted by $l(I/J)$, and prove that the inequality ${\rm sdepth}(I/J)\geq n-l(I/J)+1$ hold. On the other hand, we show that ${\sdepth}(I/J)\geq n-\dim L_{I/J}$, where $\dim L_{I/J}$ denotes the order dimension of the lcm lattice of $I/J$. We show that $I$ and $S/I$ satisfy Stanley's conjecture, if either the lcm number of $I$ or the order dimension of the lcm lattice of $I$ is small enough. Among other results, we also prove that the Stanley--Reisner ideal of a vertex decomposable simplicial complex satisfies Stanley's conjecture.

Dependence of Betti Numbers on Characteristic
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the dependence of graded Betti numbers of monomial ideals on the characteristic of the base field. The examples we describe include bipartite ideals, Stanley--Reisner ideals of vertex-decomposable complexes and ideals with componentwise linear resolutions. We give a description of bipartite graphs and, using discrete Morse theory, provide a way of looking at the homology of arbitrary simplicial complexes through bipartite ideals. We also prove that the Betti table of a monomial ideal over the field of rational numbers can be obtained from the Betti table over any field by a sequence of consecutive cancellations.

Locally complete intersection Stanley-Reisner ideals

In this paper, we prove that the Stanley--Reisner ideal of any connected simplicial complex of dimension $\ge 2$ that is locally complete intersection is a complete intersection ideal. As an application, we show that the Stanley--Reisner ideal whose powers are Buchsbaum is a complete intersection ideal.

A note on the subword complexes in Coxeter groups
We prove that the Stanley--Reisner ideal of the Alexander dual of the subword complexes in Coxeter groups has linear quotients with respect to the lexicographical order of the minimal monomial generators. As a consequence, we obtain a shelling order on the facets of the subword complex. We relate some invariants of the subword complexes or of their dual with invariants of the word. For a particular class of subword complexes, we prove that the Stanley--Reisner ring is a complete intersection ring.

Algebraic shifting of strongly edge decomposable spheres
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Nevo introduced the notion of strongly edge decomposable spheres. In this paper, we characterize the algebraic shifted complex of those spheres. Algebraically, this result yields the characterization of the generic initial ideal of the Stanley--Reisner ideal of Gorenstein* complexes having the strong Lefschetz property in characteristic 0.

Generic initial ideals and squeezed spheres
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1988 Kalai construct a large class of simplicial spheres, called squeezed spheres, and in 1991 presented a conjectured about generic initial ideals of Stanley--Reisner ideals of squeezed spheres. In the present paper this conjecture will be proved. In order to prove Kalai's conjecture, based on the fact that every squeezed $(d-1)$-sphere is the boundary of a certain $d$-ball, called a squeezed $d$-ball, generic initial ideals of Stanley--Reisner ideals of squeezed balls will be determined. In addition, generic initial ideals of exterior face ideals of squeezed balls are determined. On the other hand, we study the squeezing operation, which assigns to each Gorenstein* complex $Γ$ having the weak Lefschetz property a squeezed sphere $\mathrm{Sq}(Γ)$, and show that this operation increases graded Betti numbers.

Distributive Lattices, Bipartite Graphs and Alexander Duality
Published • View PublicationBIB
A certain squarefree monomial ideal $H_P$ arising from a finite partially ordered set $P$ will be studied from viewpoints of both commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, it is proved that the defining ideal of the Rees algebra of $H_P$ possesses a quadratic Gröbner basis. Thus in particular all powers of $H_P$ have linear resolutions. Second, the minimal free graded resolution of $H_P$ will be constructed explicitly and a combinatorial formula to compute the Betti numbers of $H_P$ will be presented. Third, by using the fact that the Alexander dual of the simplicial complex $Δ$ whose Stanley--Reisner ideal coincides with $H_P$ is Cohen--Macaulay, all the Cohen--Macaulay bipartite graphs will be classified.
