Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of quadrics via Ehrhart theory
We show that the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of the d-dimensional non-degenerate quadric hypersurface of characteristic p > 2 is a rational function of p composed from the Ehrhart polynomials of integer polytopes. In consequence, we prove that the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of quadrics of fixed characteristic is a decreasing function of dimension and recover results of Trivedi and Gessel-Monsky on the behaviour of said Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity as a function of characteristic.

Let $Δ$ be a triangulated homology ball whose boundary complex is $\partialΔ$. A result of Hochster asserts that the canonical module of the Stanley--Reisner ring of $Δ$, $\mathbb F[Δ]$, is isomorphic to the Stanley--Reisner module of the pair $(Δ, \partialΔ)$, $\mathbb F[Δ,\partial Δ]$. This result implies that an Artinian reduction of $\mathbb F[Δ,\partial Δ]$ is (up to a shift in grading) isomorphic to the Matlis dual of the corresponding Artinian reduction of $\mathbb F[Δ]$. We establish a generalization of this duality to all triangulations of connected orientable homology manifolds with boundary. We also provide an explicit algebraic interpretation of the $h"$-numbers of Buchsbaum complexes and use it to prove the monotonicity of $h"$-numbers for pairs of Buchsbaum complexes as well as the unimodality of $h"$-vectors of barycentric subdivisions of Buchsbaum polyhedral complexes. We close with applications to the algebraic manifold $g$-conjecture.

Let $S = K[x_1,..., x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $K$. Let $I(G) \subseteq S$ denote the edge ideal of a graph $G$. We show that the $\ell$th symbolic power $I(G)^{(\ell)}$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ideal (i.e., $S/I(G)^{(\ell)}$ is Cohen-Macaulay) for some integer $\ell \ge 3$ if and only if $G$ is a disjoint union of finitely many complete graphs. When this is the case, all the symbolic powers $I(G)^{(\ell)}$ are Cohen-Macaulay ideals. Similarly, we characterize graphs $G$ for which $S/I(G)^{(\ell)}$ has (FLC).
As an application, we show that an edge ideal $I(G)$ is complete intersection provided that $S/I(G)^{\ell}$ is Cohen-Macaulay for some integer $\ell \ge 3$. This strengthens the main theorem in [Effective Cowsik-Nori theorem for edge ideals by M.Crupi, G.Rinaldo, N.Terai, and K.Yoshida, Comm. Alg. 38 (2010), 3347-3357].

In this paper, we study several properties of the second power $I_Δ^2$ of a Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_Δ$ of any dimension. As the main result, we prove that $S/I_Δ$ is Gorenstein whenever $S/I_Δ^2$ is Cohen-Macaulay over any field $K$. Moreover, we give a criterion for the second symbolic power of $I_Δ$ to satisfy $(S_2)$ and to coincide with the ordinary power, respectively. Finally, we provide new examples of Stanley-Reisner ideals whose second powers are Cohen-Macaulay.

In this paper, we prove that the Stanley--Reisner ideal of any connected simplicial complex of dimension $\ge 2$ that is locally complete intersection is a complete intersection ideal. As an application, we show that the Stanley--Reisner ideal whose powers are Buchsbaum is a complete intersection ideal.

In this paper we first give a lower bound on multiplicities for Buchsbaum homogeneous $k$-algebras $A$ in terms of the dimension $d$, the codimension $c$, the initial degree $q$, and the length of the local cohomology modules of $A$. Next, we introduce the notion of Buchsbaum $k$-algebras with minimal multiplicity of degree $q$, and give several characterizations for those rings. In particular, we will show that those algebras have linear free resolutions. Further, we will give many examples of those algebras.

In this paper, we study non-Cohen--Macaulay Buchsbaum Stanley--Reisner rings with linear free resolution. In particular, for given integers $c$, $d$, $q$ with $c \ge 1$, $2 \le q \le d$, we give an upper bound $h_{c,d,q}$ on the dimension of the unique non-vanishing homology $\widetilde{H}_{q-2}(Δ;k)$ of a $d$-dimensional Buchsbaum ring $k[Δ]$ with $q$-linear resolution and codimension $c$. Also, we discuss about existence for such Buchsbaum rings with $\dim_k \widetilde{H}_{q-2}(Δ;k) = h$ for any $h$ with $0 \le h \le h_{c,d,q}$, and prove an existence theorem in the case of $q=d=3$ using the notion of Cohen--Macaulay linear cover. On the other hand, we introduce the notion of Buchsbaum Stanley--Reisner rings with minimal multiplicity of type $q$, which extends the notion of Buchsbaum rings with minimal multiplicity defined by Goto. As an application, we give many examples of Buchsbaum Stanley--Reisner rings with $q$-linear resolution.
