The $h$-polynomial and the rook polynomial of some polyominoes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $X$ be a convex polyomino such that its vertex set is a sublattice of $\mathbb{N}^2$. Let $\Bbbk[X]$ be the toric ring (over a field $\Bbbk$) associated to $X$ in the sense of Qureshi, \emph{J. Algebra}, 2012. Write the Hilbert series of $\Bbbk[X]$ as $(1 + h_1 t + h_2 t^2 + \cdots )/(1-t)^{\dim(\Bbbk[X])}$. For $k \in \mathbb{N}$, let $r_k$ be the number of configurations in $X$ with $k$ pairwise non-attacking rooks. We show that $h_2 < r_2$ if $X$ is not a thin polyomino. This partially confirms a conjectured characterization of thin polyominoes by Rinaldo and Romeo, \emph{J. Algebraic Combin.}, 2021.
Depth and regularity modulo a principal ideal
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the relationship between depth and regularity of a homogeneous ideal I and those of (I,f) and I:f, where f is a linear form or a monomial. Our results has several interesting consequences on depth and regularity of edge ideals of hypegraphs and of powers of ideals.

Betti tables of $p$-Borel-fixed ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we provide a counter-example to a conjecture of K. Pardue [Thesis, Brandeis University, 1994.], which asserts that if a monomial ideal is $p$-Borel-fixed, then its $\naturals$-graded Betti table, after passing to any field does not depend on the field. More precisely, we show that, for any monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $S$ over the ring $\ints$ of integers and for any prime number $p$, there is a $p$-Borel-fixed monomial $S$-ideal $J$ such that a region of the multigraded Betti table of $J(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ is in one-to-one correspondence with the multigraded Betti table of $I(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ for all fields $\ell$ of arbitrary characteristic. There is no analogous statement for Borel-fixed ideals in characteristic zero. Additionally, the construction also shows that there are $p$-Borel-fixed ideals with non-cellular minimal resolutions.

Dependence of Betti Numbers on Characteristic
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the dependence of graded Betti numbers of monomial ideals on the characteristic of the base field. The examples we describe include bipartite ideals, Stanley--Reisner ideals of vertex-decomposable complexes and ideals with componentwise linear resolutions. We give a description of bipartite graphs and, using discrete Morse theory, provide a way of looking at the homology of arbitrary simplicial complexes through bipartite ideals. We also prove that the Betti table of a monomial ideal over the field of rational numbers can be obtained from the Betti table over any field by a sequence of consecutive cancellations.

Regularity, Depth and Arithmetic Rank of Bipartite Edge Ideals
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 30 (2009), no. 4, 429-445 • View PublicationBIB
We study minimal free resolutions of edge ideals of bipartite graphs. We associate a directed graph to a bipartite graph whose edge ideal is unmixed, and give expressions for the regularity and the depth of the edge ideal in terms of invariants of the directed graph. For some classes of unmixed edge ideals, we show that the arithmetic rank of the ideal equals projective dimension of its quotient.
$d$-Regular graphs of acyclic chromatic index at least $d+2$
Published in J. Graph Theory 63 (2010), no. 3, 226-230 • View PublicationBIB
An $acyclic$ edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic cycles. The \emph{acyclic chromatic index} of a graph is the minimum number k such that there is an acyclic edge coloring using k colors and is denoted by $a'(G)$. It was conjectured by Alon, Sudakov and Zaks (and earlier by Fiamcik) that $a'(G)\le Δ+2$, where $Δ=Δ(G)$ denotes the maximum degree of the graph. Alon et.al also raised the question whether the complete graphs of even order are the only regular graphs which require $Δ+2$ colors to be acyclically edge colored. In this paper, using a simple counting argument we observe not only that this is not true, but infact all d-regular graphs with $2n$ vertices and $d > n$, requires at least $d+2$ colors. We also show that $a'(K_{n,n}) \ge n+2$, when $n$ is odd using a more non-trivial argument(Here $K_{n,n}$ denotes the complete bipartite graph with $n$ vertices on each side). This lower bound for $K_{n,n}$ can be shown to be tight for some families of complete bipartite graphs and for small values of $n$. We also infer that for every $d,n$ such that $d \ge 5$, $n \ge 2d + 3$ and $dn$ even, there exist $d$-regular graphs which require at least $d+2$-colors to be acyclically edge colored.

Multiplicity Bounds for Quadratic Monomial Ideals
We prove the multiplicity bounds conjectured by Herzog-Huneke-Srinivasan and Herzog-Srinivasan in the following cases: the strong conjecture for edge ideals of bipartite graphs, and the weaker Taylor bound conjecture for all quadratic monomial ideals. We attach a directed graph to a bipartite graph with perfect matching, and describe operations on the directed graph that would reduce the problem to a Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graph. We determine when equality holds in the conjectured bound for edge ideals of bipartite graphs, and verify that when equality holds, the resolution is pure. We characterize bipartite graphs that have Cohen-Macaulay edge ideals and quasi-pure resolutions.
