Reflexive polytopes and discrete polymatroids
A classification of discrete polymatroids whose independence polytopes are reflexive will be presented.
Toric rings attached to simplicial complexes
We consider standard graded toric rings $R_Δ$ whose generators correspond to the faces of a simplicial complex $Δ$. When $R_Δ$ is normal, it is shown that its divisor class group is free. For a flag complex $Δ$ which is the clique complex of a perfect graph, a nice description for the class group and the canonical module of $R_Δ$ in terms of the minimal vertex covers of the graph is given. Moreover, for a quasi-forest simplicial complex a quadratic Gröbner basis for the defining ideal of $R_Δ$ is presented. Using this fact we give combinatorial descriptions for the $a$-invariant and the Gorenstein property of $R_Δ$.

We extend the sortability concept to monomial ideals which are not necessarily generated in one degree and as an application we obtain normal Cohen-Macaulay toric rings attached to vertex cover ideals of graphs. Moreover, we consider a construction on a graph called a clique multi-whiskering which always produces vertex cover ideals with componentwise linear powers.
The normalized depth function of squarefree powers

The depth of squarefree powers of a squarefree monomial ideal is introduced. Let $I$ be a squarefree monomial ideal of the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. The $k$-th squarefree power $I^{[k]}$ of $I$ is the ideal of $S$ generated by those squarefree monomials $u_1\cdots u_k$ with each $u_i\in G(I)$, where $G(I)$ is the unique minimal system of monomial generators of $I$. Let $d_k$ denote the minimum degree of monomials belonging to $G(I^{[k]})$. One has $\operatorname{depth}(S/I^{[k]}) \geq d_k -1$. Setting $g_I(k) = \operatorname{depth}(S/I^{[k]}) - (d_k - 1)$, one calls $g_I(k)$ the normalized depth function of $I$. The computational experience strongly invites us to propose the conjecture that the normalized depth function is nonincreasing. In the present paper, especially the normalized depth function of the edge ideal of a finite simple graph is deeply studied.

Systems of parameters and the Cohen--Macaulay property

We recall a numerical criteria for Cohen--Macaulayness related to system of parameters, and introduce monomial ideals of König type which include the edge ideals of König graphs. We show that a monomial ideal is of König type if and only if its corresponding residue class ring admits a system of parameters whose elements are of the form $x_i-x_j$. This provides an algebraic characterization of König graphs. We use this special parameter systems for the study of the edge ideal of König graphs and the study of the order complex of a certain family of posets. Finally, for any simplicial complex $Δ$ we introduce a system of parameters for $K[Δ]$ with a universal construction principle, independent of the base field and only dependent on the faces of $Δ$. This system of parameters is an efficient tool to test Cohen--Macaulayness of the Stanley--Reisner ring of a simplicial complex.

We study the coordinate ring of an $L$-convex polyomino, determine its regularity in terms of the maximal number of rooks that can be placed in the polyomino. We also characterize the Gorenstein $L$-convex polyominoes and those which are Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum, and compute the Cohen--Macaulay type of any $L$-convex polyomino in terms of the maximal rectangles covering it.

Squarefree powers of edge ideals are intimately related to matchings of the underlying graph. In this paper we give bounds for the regularity of squarefree powers of edge ideals, and we consider the question of when such powers are linearly related or have linear resolution. We also consider the so-called squarefree Ratliff property.

Let $H\subseteq \mathbb{N}^d$ be a normal affine semigroup, $R=K[H]$ its semigroup ring over the field $K$ and $ω_R$ its canonical module. The Ulrich elements for $H$ are those $h$ in $H$ such that for the multiplication map by $\mathbf{x}^h$ from $R$ into $ω_R$, the cokernel is an Ulrich module. We say that the ring $R$ is almost Gorenstein if Ulrich elements exist in $H$. For the class of slim semigroups that we introduce, we provide an algebraic criterion for testing the Ulrich propery. When $d=2$, all normal affine semigroups are slim. Here we have a simpler combinatorial description of the Ulrich property. We improve this result for testing the elements in $H$ which are closest to zero. In particular, we give a simple arithmetic criterion for when is $(1,1)$ an Ulrich element in $H$.

The trace of the canonical module of a Cohen-Macaulay ring describes its non-Gorenstein locus. We study the trace of the canonical module of a Segre product of algebras, and we apply our results to compute the non-Gorenstein locus of toric rings. We provide several sufficient and necessary conditions for Hibi rings and normal semigroup rings to be Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum.
t-spread strongly stable monomial ideals

We introduce the concept of $t$-spread monomials and $t$-spread strongly stable ideals. These concepts are a natural generalization of strongly stable and squarefree strongly stable ideals. For the study of this class of ideals we use the $t$-fold stretching operator. It is shown that $t$-spread strongly stable ideals are componentwise linear. Their height, their graded Betti numbers and their generic initial ideal are determined. We also consider the toric rings whose generators come from $t$-spread principal Borel ideals.

Let $I \subset K[x,y]$ be a monomial ideal. How small can $μ(I^2)$ be in terms of $μ(I)$? It has been expected that the inequality $μ(I^2) > μ(I)$ should hold whenever $μ(I) \ge 2$. Here we disprove this expectation and provide a somewhat surprising answer to the above question.

We study the relationship between depth and regularity of a homogeneous ideal I and those of (I,f) and I:f, where f is a linear form or a monomial. Our results has several interesting consequences on depth and regularity of edge ideals of hypegraphs and of powers of ideals.

The trace of the canonical module (the canonical trace) determines the non-Gorenstein locus of a local Cohen--Macaulay ring. We call a local Cohen--Macaulay ring nearly Gorenstein, if its canonical trace contains the maximal ideal. Similar definitions can be made for positively graded Cohen--Macaulay $K$-algebras. We study the canonical trace for tensor products and Segre products of algebras, as well as of (squarefree) Veronese subalgebras. The results are used to classify the nearly Gorenstein Hibi rings. We study connections between the class of nearly Gorenstein rings and that of almost Gorenstein rings. We show that in dimension one, the former class includes the latter.
Simplicial orders and chordality

Chordal clutters in the sense of [14] and [3] are defined via simplicial orders. Their circuit ideal has a linear resolution, independent of the characteristic of the base field. We show that any Betti sequence of an ideal with linear resolution appears as the Betti sequence of the circuit ideal of such a chordal clutter. Associated with any simplicial order is a sequence of integers which we call the $λ$-sequence of the chordal clutter. All possible $λ$-sequences are characterized. They are intimately related to the Hilbert function of a suitable standard graded $K$-algebra attached to the chordal clutter. By the $λ$-sequence of a chordal clutter we determine other numerical invariants of the circuit ideal, such as the $\textbf{h}$-vector and the Betti numbers.

Let $X$ be an $(m\times n)$-matrix of indeterminates, and let $J$ be the ideal generated by a set $\mathcal{S}$ of maximal minors of $X$. We construct the linear strand of the resolution of $J$. This linear strand is determined by the clique complex of the $m$-clutter corresponding to the set $\mathcal{S}$. As a consequence one obtains explicit formulas for the graded Betti numbers $β_{i,i+m}(J)$ for all $i\geq 0$. We also determine all sets $\mathcal{S}$ for which $J$ has a linear resolution.

In this paper we consider bi-Cohen-Macaulay graphs, and give a complete classification of such graphs in the case they are bipartite or chordal. General bi-Cohen-Macaulay graphs are classified up to separation. The inseparable bi-Cohen-Macaulay graphs are determined. We establish a bijection between the set of all trees and the set of inseparable bi-Cohen-Macaulay graphs.
On the ideal of orthogonal representations of a graph in $\mathbb{R}^2$

In this paper, we study orthogonal representations of simple graphs $G$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ from an algebraic perspective in case $d = 2$. Orthogonal representations of graphs, introduced by Lovász, are maps from the vertex set to $\mathbb{R}^d$ where non-adjacent vertices are sent to orthogonal vectors. We exhibit algebraic properties of the ideal generated by the equations expressing this condition and deduce geometric properties of the variety of orthogonal embeddings for $d=2$ and $\mathbb{R}$ replaced by an arbitrary field. In particular, we classify when the ideal is radical and provide a reduced primary decomposition if $\sqrt{-1} \not\in K$. This leads to a description of the variety of orthogonal embeddings as a union of varieties defined by prime ideals. In particular, this applies to the motivating case $K = \mathbb{R}$.

We introduce pseudo-Gorenstein rings and characterize those Hibi rings attached to a finite distributive lattice L which are pseudo-Gorenstein. The characterization is given in terms of the poset of join-irreducible elements of L. We also present a necessary condition for Hibi rings to be level. Special attention is given to planar and hyper-planar lattices. Finally the pseudo-Goresntein and level property of Hibi rings and generalized Hibi rings is compared with each other.
