Symmetric group fixed quotients of polynomial rings
Given a representation of a finite group $G$ over some commutative base ring $\mathbf{k}$, the cofixed space is the largest quotient of the representation on which the group acts trivially. If $G$ acts by $\mathbf{k}$-algebra automorphisms, then the cofixed space is a module over the ring of $G$-invariants. When the order of $G$ is not invertible in the base ring, little is known about this module structure. We study the cofixed space in the case that $G$ is the symmetric group on $n$ letters acting on a polynomial ring by permuting its variables. When $\mathbf{k}$ has characteristic 0, the cofixed space is isomorphic to an ideal of the ring of symmetric polynomials. Localizing $\mathbf{k}$ at a prime integer $p$ while letting $n$ vary reveals striking behavior in these ideals. As $n$ grows, the ideals stay stable in a sense, then jump in complexity each time $n$ reaches a multiple of $p$.

Working in a polynomial ring $S=\mathbf{k}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ where $\mathbf{k}$ is an arbitrary commutative ring with $1$, we consider the $d^{th}$ Veronese subalgebras $R=S^{(d)}$, as well as natural $R$-submodules $M=S^{(\geq r, d)}$ inside $S$. We develop and use characteristic-free theory of Schur functors associated to ribbon skew diagrams as a tool to construct simple $GL_n(\mathbf{k})$-equivariant minimal free $R$-resolutions for the quotient ring $\mathbf{k}=R/R_+$ and for these modules $M$. These also lead to elegant descriptions of $\mathrm{Tor}^R_i(M,M')$ for all $i$ and $\mathrm{Hom}_R(M,M')$ for any pair of these modules $M,M'$.
Alexander duals of symmetric simplicial complexes and Stanley-Reisner Ideals
Given an ascending chain $(I_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ of $\Sym$-invariant squarefree monomial ideals, we study the corresponding chain of Alexander duals $(I_n^\vee)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$. Using a novel combinatorial tool, which we call \emph{avoidance up to symmetry}, we provide an explicit description of the minimal generating set up to symmetry in terms of the original generators. Combining this result with methods from discrete geometry, this enables us to show that the number of orbit generators of $I_n^\vee$ is given by a polynomial in $n$ for sufficiently large $n$. The same is true for the number of orbit generators of minimal degree, this degree being a linear function in $n$ eventually. The former result implies that the number of $\Sym$-orbits of primary components of $I_n$ grows polynomially in $n$ for large $n$. As another application, we show that, for each $i\geq 0$, the number of $i$-dimensional faces of the associated Stanley-Reisner complexes of $I_n$ is also given by a polynomial in $n$ for large $n$.
