Localized Persistent Commutative Algebra
We develop a localized persistent theory of commutative algebra for Stanley-Reisner rings, based on local cohomology supported at a coordinate prime rather than at the maximal ideal. The construction is modeled on the persistent Stanley-Reisner theory of Suwayyid and Wei (arXiv:2503.23482) and its functorial development for graphs and hypergraphs (arXiv:2512.17619), in which invariants of the face ring such as graded Betti numbers and f- and h-vectors are persisted across a filtration. That framework is built from the minimal free resolution and is thus Tor-theoretic; we work instead on the injective side, and the resulting modules record information localized at a single vertex, complementing the global picture given by maximal-support local cohomology. For a vertex prime $p_i = (x_j : j \neq i)$ we prove an exact $\mathbb{Z}^n$-graded decomposition of $H^q_{p_i}(k[Δ])$ into the maximal-support local cohomology of the deletion and of the link of the vertex $i$, the first in $x_i$-degree zero and the second repeated in every positive $x_i$-degree; at the level of graded dimensions this recovers the vertex-prime case of Rahimi's bigraded formula. With Hochster's formula this yields a closed combinatorial description of every multigraded piece. Building on this structure we introduce per-vertex persistent local cohomology numbers, prove a persistent links-Hochster formula, obtain interval decompositions of the resulting reversed-arrow persistence modules and a bottleneck stability theorem, retain multiplication by the uninverted variable as a morphism of persistence modules that the two barcodes alone do not determine, and extend the theory to an arbitrary coordinate prime, where the multiplication maps of the uninverted variables assemble into a commuting Boolean diagram of persistence modules.

Matroid analogues of Gal's conjecture
Well-known conjectures of Charney--Davis, Gal, and Nevo--Petersen predict increasingly strong positivity phenomena for the h-vectors of flag simplicial spheres. In this paper, we formulate and prove matroid analogues of these conjectures in the setting of Chow polynomials of matroids with building sets. Our proofs rely on toric geometry and make crucial use of tropical intersection theory. We begin by introducing complete building sets, a class encompassing all maximal building sets and other important families such as minimal building sets of braid matroids. For matroids with complete building sets, we analyze the Chow rings of the associated toric varieties, and prove that their Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials are gamma-positive. From this analysis, we derive a combinatorial formula for the coefficients of the gamma-expansion, and use it to explicitly construct a simplicial complex $Γ$, whose f-vector coincides with the gamma-vector. This establishes a matroid analogue of the Nevo--Petersen conjecture. When the building set is maximal, we further prove that $Γ$ is balanced, confirming the strongest such analogue in this case. As an application, we obtain a new combinatorial formula for the gamma-expansion of the Poincaré polynomial of the Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen compactification $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, and derive several novel numerical inequalities for its coefficients. We also study the toric varieties of matroids with flag building sets, another class containing maximal building sets as well as several other prominent families. We prove that the Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials of these toric varieties are gamma-positive. This result establishes matroid analogues of the Charney--Davis and Gal conjectures, and simultaneously extends several recent gamma-positivity results for Chow polynomials.
Cycle systems, coparking functions, and h-vectors of matroids
The h-vector of a matroid M is an important invariant related to the independence complex of M and can also be recovered from an evaluation of its Tutte polynomial. A well-known conjecture of Stanley posits that the h-vector of a matroid is a pure O-sequence, meaning that it can be obtained by counting faces of a pure multicomplex. Merino has established Stanley's conjecture for the case of cographic matroids via chip-firing on graphs and the concept of a G-parking function. Inspired by these constructions, we introduce the notion of a cycle system for a matroid M -- a family of cycles (unions of circuits) of M with overlap properties that mimic cut-sets in a graph. A choice of cycle system on M defines a collection of integer sequences that we call coparking functions. We show that for any cycle system on M, the set of coparking functions is in bijection with the set of bases of M. We show that maximal coparking functions all have the same degree, and that cycle systems behave well under deletion and contraction. This leads to a proof of Stanley's conjecture for the case of matroids that admit cycle systems, which include, for instance, graphic matroids of cones as well as K33-free graphs.

On the socle of Artinian algebras associated to graphs
Given a simple graph, consider the polynomial ring with coefficients in a field and variables identified with the edges of the graph. Given a non-empty even cardinality Eulerian subgraph and a choice of half of its edges, consider the homogeneous binomial obtained by taking the product of these edges minus the product of the remaining edges of the subgraph. We define a homogeneous ideal by taking as generators all binomials obtained in this way, varying the Eulerian subgraph and the choice of half of its edges, together with the squares of the variables of the ring. This ideal is related to the Eulerian ideal, introduced by Neves, Vaz Pinto and Villarreal. We call the corresponding quotient the Eulerian Artinian algebra associated to the graph. The goal of the present work is to study the socle of these algebras through the lens of graph theory. Our main results include a combinatorial characterization of a monomial basis of the socle, a characterization of Gorenstein Eulerian Artinian algebras in the case of bipartite graphs and the computation of the h-vector and socle degrees in the cases of a complete graph and a complete bipartite graph.

The h-vector of a Positroid is a pure O-sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
A well-known conjecture of Stanley is that the h-vector of any matroid is a pure O-sequence. There have been numerous papers with partial progress on this conjecture, but it is still wide open. Positroids are special class of linear matroids that play a crucial role in the field of total positivity. In this short note, we prove that Stanley's conjecture holds for positroids.

Lagrangian combinatorics of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Lagrangian geometry of matroids was introduced in [ADH20] through the construction of the conormal fan of a matroid M. We used the conormal fan to give a Lagrangian-geometric interpretation of the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of M: its entries are the degrees of the mixed intersections of certain convex piecewise linear functions $γ$ and $δ$ on the conormal fan of M. By showing that the conormal fan satisfies the Hodge-Riemann relations, we proved Brylawski's conjecture that this h-vector is a log-concave sequence. This sequel explores the Lagrangian combinatorics of matroids, further developing the combinatorics of biflats and biflags of a matroid, and relating them to the theory of basis activities developed by Tutte, Crapo, and Las Vergnas. Our main result is a combinatorial strengthening of the $h$-vector computation: we write the k-th mixed intersection of $γ$ and $δ$ explicitly as a sum of biflags corresponding to the nbc-bases of internal activity k+1.

Triconed Graphs, weighted forests, and h-vectors of matroid complexes
A well-known conjecture of Stanley is that the h-vector of a matroid is a pure O-sequence. There have been numerous papers with partial progress on this conjecture, but it is still wide open. In particular, for graphic matroids coming from taking the spanning trees of a graph as bases, the conjecture is mostly unsolved. In graph theory, a set of vertices is called dominating if every other vertex is adjacent to some vertex inside the chosen set. Kook proved Stanley's conjecture for coned graphs, which is the class of graphs that are dominated by a single vertex. Cranford et al extended that result to biconed graphs, which is the class of graphs dominated by a single edge. In this paper we extend that result to triconed graphs, the class of graphs dominated by a path of length 2.

Shellable tilings on relative simplicial complexes and their h-vectors
Published • View PublicationBIB
An h-tiling on a finite simplicial complex is a partition of its geometric realization by maximal simplices deprived of several codimension one faces together with possibly their remaining face of highest codimension. In this last case, the tiles are said to be critical. An h-tiling thus induces a partitioning of its face poset by closed or semi-open intervals. We prove the existence of h-tilings on every finite simplicial complex after finitely many stellar subdivisions at maximal simplices. These tilings are moreover shellable. We also prove that the number of tiles of each type used by a tiling, encoded by its h-vector, is determined by the number of critical tiles of each index it uses, encoded by its critical vector. In the case of closed triangulated manifolds, these vectors satisfy some palindromic property. We finally study the behavior of tilings under any stellar subdivision.

Morse shellings on products
We recently defined a property of Morse shellability (and tileability) of finite simplicial complexes which extends the classical one and its relations with discrete Morse theory. We now prove that the product of two Morse tileable or shellable simplicial complexes carries Morse tileable or shellable triangulations under some tameness condition, and that any tiling or shelling becomes tame after one barycentric subdivision. We deduce that any finite product of closed manifolds of dimensions less than four carries Morse shellable triangulations whose critical and h-vectors are palindromic. We also prove that the h-vector of a Morse tiling is always palindromic in dimension less than four or in the case of an h-tiling, provided its critical vector is palindromic.

The bipermutahedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
The harmonic polytope and the bipermutahedron are two related polytopes which arose in Ardila, Denham, and Huh's work on the Lagrangian geometry of matroids. We study the bipermutahedron. We show that its faces are in bijection with the vertex-labeled and edge-labeled multigraphs with no isolated vertices; the generating function for its f-vector is a simple evaluation of the three variable Rogers--Ramanujan function. We show that the h-polynomial of the bipermutahedral fan is the biEulerian polynomial, which counts bipermutations according to their number of descents. We construct a unimodular triangulation of the product of n triangles that is combinatorially equivalent to (the triple cone over) the nth bipermutahedral fan. Ehrhart theory then gives us a formula for the biEulerian polynomial, which we use to show that this polynomial is real-rooted and that the h-vector of the bipermutahedral fan is log-concave and unimodal. We describe all the deformations of the bipermutahedron; that is, the ample cone of the bipermutahedral toric variety. We prove that among all polytopes in this family, the bipermutahedron has the largest possible symmetry group. Finally, we show that the Minkowski quotient of the bipermutahedron and the harmonic polytope equals 2.
Biconed graphs, weighted forests, and h-vectors of matroid complexes

A well-known conjecture of Richard Stanley posits that the $h$-vector of the independence complex of a matroid is a pure ${\mathcal O}$-sequence. The conjecture has been established for various classes but is open for graphic matroids. A biconed graph is a graph with two specified `coning vertices', such that every vertex of the graph is connected to at least one coning vertex. The class of biconed graphs includes coned graphs, Ferrers graphs, and complete multipartite graphs. We study the $h$-vectors of graphic matroids arising from biconed graphs, providing a combinatorial interpretation of their entries in terms of `$2$-weighted forests' of the underlying graph. This generalizes constructions of Kook and Lee who studied the Möbius coinvariant (the last nonzero entry of the $h$-vector) of graphic matroids of complete bipartite graphs. We show that allowing for partially $2$-weighted forests gives rise to a pure multicomplex whose face count recovers the $h$-vector, establishing Stanley's conjecture for this class of matroids. We also discuss how our constructions relate to a combinatorial strengthening of Stanley's Conjecture (due to Klee and Samper) for this class of matroids.

Log-concavity of matroid h-vectors and mixed Eulerian numbers

For any matroid $M$, we compute the Tutte polynomial $T_M(x,y)$ using the mixed intersection numbers of certain classes in the combinatorial Chow ring $A^\bullet(M)$ arising from hypersimplices. Using the mixed Hodge-Riemann relations, we deduce a strengthening of the log-concavity of the $h$-vector of a matroid complex, improving on an old conjecture of Dawson.

Lagrangian geometry of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the conormal fan of a matroid M, which is a Lagrangian analog of the Bergman fan of M. We use the conormal fan to give a Lagrangian interpretation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle of M. This allows us to express the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of M in terms of the intersection theory of the conormal fan of M. We also develop general tools for tropical Hodge theory to prove that the conormal fan satisfies Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge-Riemann relations. The Lagrangian interpretation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle of M, when combined with the Hodge-Riemann relations for the conormal fan of M, implies Brylawski's and Dawson's conjectures that the h-vectors of the broken circuit complex and the independence complex of M are log-concave sequences.

A note on gamma triangles and local gamma vectors
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article introduces Gamma-triangles, which are closely related to and more fundamental than F-triangles and H-triangles that have been used in the combinatorics of cluster complexes. It is proved that Gamma-triangles can be expressed as sums of the local gamma-vectors introduced by Athanasiadis, which themselves refine the local h-vectors attached by Stanley to simplicial subdivisions. Gamma triangles of all cluster complexes are then explicitly computed.

Toric h-vectors and Chow Betti Numbers of Dual Hypersimplices
The toric h-numbers of a dual hypersimplex and the Chow Betti numbers of the normal fan of a hypersimplex are the ranks of intersection cohomology and Chow cohomology respectively of the torus orbit closure of a generic point in the Grassmannian. We give explicit formulas for these numbers. We also show that similar formulas hold for the coordinator numbers of type A^* lattices.

Unimodal Gorenstein h-vectors without the Stanley-Iarrobino property
Published in Comm. Algebra 46 (2018), no. 5, 2054--2062 • View PublicationBIB
The study of the $h$-vectors of graded Gorenstein algebras is an important topic in combinatorial commutative algebra, which despite the large amount of literature produced during the last several years, still presents many interesting open questions. In this note, we commence a study of those unimodal Gorenstein $h$-vectors that do \emph{not} satisfy the Stanley-Iarrobino property. Our main results, which are characteristic free, show that such $h$-vectors exist: 1) In socle degree $e$ if and only if $e\ge 6$; and 2) In every codimension five or greater. The main case that remains open is that of codimension four, where no Gorenstein $h$-vector is known without the Stanley-Iarrobino property. We conclude by proposing the following very general conjecture: The existence of any arbitrary level $h$-vector is \emph{independent} of the characteristic of the base field.

Subdividing the cd-index of Eulerian Posets
This thesis aims to give the reader an introduction and overview of the cd-index of a poset, as well as establish some new results. We give a combinatorial proof of Ehrenborg and Karu's cd-index subdivision decomposition for Gorenstein* complexes and extend it to a wider class of subdivisions. In doing so, we define a local cd-index that behaves analogously to the well studied local h-vector. We examine known cd-index and h-vector bounds, and then use the local cd-index to bound a particular class of polytopes with the cd-index of a stacked polytope. We conclude by investigating the h-vector and local h- vector of posets in full generality, and use an algebra morphism developed by Bayer and Ehrenborg to demonstrate the structural connection between the cd-index subdivision decomposition and the local h-vector subdivision decomposition. iii

Root polytopes, Tutte polynomials, and a duality theorem for bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a connected bipartite graph with color classes E and V and root polytope Q. Regarding the hypergraph (V,E) induced by G, we prove that its interior polynomial is equivalent to the Ehrhart polynomial of Q, which in turn is equivalent to the h-vector of any triangulation of Q. It follows that the interior polynomials of (V,E) and its transpose (E,V) agree. When G is a complete bipartite graph, our result recovers a well known hypergeometric identity due to Saalschütz. It also implies that certain extremal coefficients in the Homfly polynomial of a special alternating link can be read off of an associated Floer homology group.

Stanley's nonunimodal Gorenstein h-vector is optimal
Published in Proc. AMS 145 (2017), no. 1, 1--9 • View PublicationBIB
We classify all possible $h$-vectors of graded artinian Gorenstein algebras in socle degree 4 and codimension $\leq 17$, and in socle degree 5 and codimension $\leq 25$. We obtain as a consequence that the least number of variables allowing the existence of a nonunimodal Gorenstein $h$-vector is 13 for socle degree 4, and 17 for socle degree 5. In particular, the smallest nonunimodal Gorenstein $h$-vector is $(1,13,12,13,1)$, which was constructed by Stanley in his 1978 seminal paper on level algebras. This solves a long-standing open question in this area. All of our results are characteristic free.

On interior polytope number sequences
Polytope numbers for a given polytope are an integer sequence defined by the combinatorics of the polytope. Recent work by H. K. Kim and J. Y. Lee has focused on writing polytope number sequences as sums of simplex number sequences. In addition, these works have given a process for writing the polytope number sequence in a recursive fashion by using the interior sequence for the various k-faces of the polytope, each viewed as a k-dimensional polytope. This paper shows that the coefficients of the linear combination of simplex number are the h-vector components for a certain type of triangulation of the polytope. In addition, reversing the order of the coefficients in the linear combination is shown to equal the interior polytope sequence for this polytope.
