Tautological classes of matroids

We introduce certain torus-equivariant classes on permutohedral varieties which we call "tautological classes of matroids" as a new geometric framework for studying matroids. Using this framework, we unify and extend many recent developments in matroid theory arising from its interaction with algebraic geometry. We achieve this by establishing a Chow-theoretic description and a log-concavity property for a 4-variable transformation of the Tutte polynomial, and by establishing an exceptional Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch-type formula for permutohedral varieties that translates between K-theory and Chow theory.
Log-concavity of matroid h-vectors and mixed Eulerian numbers

For any matroid $M$, we compute the Tutte polynomial $T_M(x,y)$ using the mixed intersection numbers of certain classes in the combinatorial Chow ring $A^\bullet(M)$ arising from hypersimplices. Using the mixed Hodge-Riemann relations, we deduce a strengthening of the log-concavity of the $h$-vector of a matroid complex, improving on an old conjecture of Dawson.
Critical groups of covering, voltage, and signed graphs

Graph coverings are known to induce surjections of their critical groups. Here we describe the kernels of these morphisms in terms of data parametrizing the covering. Regular coverings are parametrized by voltage graphs, and the above kernel can be identified with a naturally defined voltage graph critical group. For double covers, the voltage graph is a signed graph, and the theory takes a particularly pleasant form, leading also to a theory of double covers of signed graphs.

We answer a question by Niederreiter concerning the enumeration of a class of subspaces of finite dimensional vector spaces over finite fields by proving a conjecture by Ghorpade and Ram.
Generalized Nonaveraging Integer Sequences

Let the sequence S_m of nonnegative integers be generated by the following conditions: Set the first term a_0 = 0, and for all k \geq 0, let a_k+1 be the least integer greater than a_k such that no element of {a_0,...,a_k+1} is the average of m - 1 distinct other elements. Szekeres gave a closed-form description of S_3 in 1936, and Layman provided a similar description for S_4 in 1999. We first find closed forms for some similar greedy sequences that avoid averages in terms not all the same. Then, we extend the closed-form description of S_m from the known cases when m = 3 and m = 4 to any integer m \geq 3. With the help of a computer, we also generalize this to sequences that avoid solutions to specific weighted averages in distinct terms. Finally, from the closed forms of these sequences, we find bounds for their growth rates.
