Flag f-vectors of three-colored complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The flag f-vectors of three-colored complexes are characterized. This also characterizes the flag h-vectors of balanced Cohen-Macaulay complexes of dimension two, as well as the flag h-vectors of balanced shellable complexes of dimension two.

Convex-Ear Decompositions and the Flag h-Vector
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a theorem allowing us to find convex-ear decompositions for rank-selected subposets of posets that are unions of Boolean sublattices in a coherent fashion. We then apply this theorem to geometric lattices and face posets of shellable complexes, obtaining new inequalities for their h-vectors. Finally, we use the latter decomposition to prove new inequalities for the flag h-vectors of face posets of Cohen-Macaulay complexes.

Pure O-sequences and matroid h-vectors
Published in Annals of Comb. 17 (2013), no. 3, 495--508 • Search Publication
We study Stanley's long-standing conjecture that the h-vectors of matroid simplicial complexes are pure O-sequences. Our method consists of a new and more abstract approach, which shifts the focus from working on constructing suitable artinian level monomial ideals, as often done in the past, to the study of properties of pure O-sequences. We propose a conjecture on pure O-sequences and settle it in small socle degrees. This allows us to prove Stanley's conjecture for all matroids of rank 3. At the end of the paper, using our method, we discuss a first possible approach to Stanley's conjecture in full generality. Our technical work on pure O-sequences also uses very recent results of the third author and collaborators.

Generalized permutohedra, h-vector of cotransversal matroids and pure O-sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stanley has conjectured that the h-vector of a matroid complex is a pure O-sequence. We will prove this for cotransversal matroids by using generalized permutohedra. We construct a bijection between lattice points inside a r-dimensional convex polytope and bases of a rank r transversal matroid.

Face numbers of cubical barycentric subdivisions
The cubical barycentric subdivision sd_c(K) of a cubical complex K is introduced as an analogue of the barycentric subdivision of a simplicial complex. Explicit formulas for the short and long cubical h-vector of sd_c(K) are given, in terms of those of K. It is deduced that symmetry and nonnegativity of these h-vectors, as well as real rootedness of the short cubical h-polynomial, are preserved under cubical barycentric subdivision. The asymptotic behavior of the short and long cubical h-vectors of successive cubical barycentric subdivisions of K is also determined.

On the shape of a pure O-sequence
Published in Memoirs AMS 218 (2012), no. 2024, vii + 78 pp • View PublicationBIB
An order ideal is a finite poset X of (monic) monomials such that, whenever M is in X and N divides M, then N is in X. If all, say t, maximal monomials of X have the same degree, then X is pure (of type t). A pure O-sequence is the vector, h=(1,h_1,...,h_e), counting the monomials of X in each degree. Equivalently, in the language of commutative algebra, pure O-sequences are the h-vectors of monomial Artinian level algebras. Pure O-sequences had their origin in one of Richard Stanley's early works in this area, and have since played a significant role in at least three disciplines: the study of simplicial complexes and their f-vectors, level algebras, and matroids. This monograph is intended to be the first systematic study of the theory of pure O-sequences. Our work, making an extensive use of algebraic and combinatorial techniques, includes: (i) A characterization of the first half of a pure O-sequence, which gives the exact converse to an algebraic g-theorem of Hausel; (ii) A study of (the failing of) the unimodality property; (iii) The problem of enumerating pure O-sequences, including a proof that almost all O-sequences are pure, and the asymptotic enumeration of socle degree 3 pure O-sequences of type t; (iv) The Interval Conjecture for Pure O-sequences (ICP), which represents perhaps the strongest possible structural result short of an (impossible?) characterization; (v) A pithy connection of the ICP with Stanley's matroid h-vector conjecture; (vi) A specific study of pure O-sequences of type 2, including a proof of the Weak Lefschetz Property in codimension 3 in characteristic zero. As a corollary, pure O-sequences of codimension 3 and type 2 are unimodal (over any field); (vii) An analysis of the extent to which the Weak and Strong Lefschetz Properties can fail for monomial algebras; (viii) Some observations about pure f-vectors, an important special case of pure O-sequences.

H-vectors of simplicial complexes with Serre's conditions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study $h$-vectors of simplicial complexes which satisfy Serre's condition ($S_r$). We say that a simplicial complex $Δ$ satisfies Serre's condition ($S_r$) if $\tilde H_i(\lk_Δ(F);K)=0$ for all faces $F \in Δ$ and for all $i < \min \{r-1,\dim \lk_Δ(F)\}$, where $\lk_Δ(F)$ is the link of $Δ$ with respect to $F$ and where $\tilde H_i(Δ;K)$ is the reduced homology groups of $Δ$ over a field $K$. The main result of this paper is that if $Δ$ satisfies Serre's condition ($S_r$) then (i) $h_k(Δ)$ is non-negative for $k =0,1,...,r$ and (ii) $\sum_{k\geq r}h_k(Δ)$ is non-negative.

A complete h-vector for convex polytopes
This note defines a complete h-vector for convex polytopes, which extends the already known toric (or mpih) h-vector and has many similar properties. Complete means that it encodes the whole of the flag vector. First we define the concept of a generalised h-vector and state some properties that follow. The toric h-vector is given as an example. We then define a complete generalised h-vector, and again state properties. Finally, we show that this complete h-vector and all with similar properties will sometimes have negative coefficients. Most of the proofs, and further investigations, will appear elsewhere.

Composition of transpositions and equality of ribbon Schur Q-functions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 16:R110 (2009) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new operation on skew diagrams called composition of transpositions, and use it and a Jacobi-Trudi style formula to derive equalities on skew Schur Q-functions whose indexing shifted skew diagram is an ordinary skew diagram. When this skew diagram is a ribbon, we conjecture necessary and sufficient conditions for equality of ribbon Schur Q-functions. Moreover, we determine all relations between ribbon Schur Q-functions; show they supply a Z-basis for skew Schur Q-functions; assert their irreducibility; and show that the non-commutative analogue of ribbon Schur Q-functions is the flag h-vector of Eulerian posets.
Root polytopes and growth series of root lattices
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 25 (2011), 360-378 • View PublicationBIB
The convex hull of the roots of a classical root lattice is called a root polytope. We determine explicit unimodular triangulations of the boundaries of the root polytopes associated to the root lattices A_n, C_n, and D_n, and compute their f-and h-vectors. This leads us to recover formulae for the growth series of these root lattices, which were first conjectured by Conway-Mallows-Sloane and Baake-Grimm and proved by Conway-Sloane and Bacher-de la Harpe-Venkov.
Faces of Generalized Permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of the paper is to calculate face numbers of simple generalized permutohedra, and study their f-, h- and gamma-vectors. These polytopes include permutohedra, associahedra, graph-associahedra, simple graphic zonotopes, nestohedra, and other interesting polytopes. We give several explicit formulas for h-vectors and gamma-vectors involving descent statistics. This includes a combinatorial interpretation for gamma-vectors of a large class of generalized permutohedra which are flag simple polytopes, and confirms for them Gal's conjecture on nonnegativity of gamma-vectors. We calculate explicit generating functions and formulae for h-polynomials of various families of graph-associahedra, including those corresponding to all Dynkin diagrams of finite and affine types. We also discuss relations with Narayana numbers and with Simon Newcomb's problem. We give (and conjecture) upper and lower bounds for f-, h-, and gamma-vectors within several classes of generalized permutohedra. An appendix discusses the equivalence of various notions of deformations of simple polytopes.

Ehrhart analogue of the h-vector
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a formula of Stanley that expresses the Ehrhart generating polynomial of a polyhedral complex in terms of the h-polynomials of toric varieties. We prove that the coefficients in this expression are all non-negative and show that these coefficients can be found using the decomposition theorem in intersection cohomology.

Several Convex-Ear Decompositions
In this paper we give convex-ear decompositions for the order complexes of several classes of posets, namely supersolvable lattices with non-zero Mobius functions and rank-selected subposets of such lattices, rank-selected geometric lattices, and rank-selected face posets of shellable complexes which do not include the top rank. These decompositions give us many new inequalities for the h-vectors of these complexes. In addition, our decomposition of rank-selected face posets of shellable complexes allows us to prove inequalities for the flag h-vector of face posets of Cohen-Macaulay complexes.
h-vectors of generalized associahedra and non-crossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A case-free proof is given that the entries of the $h$-vector of the cluster complex $Δ(Φ)$, associated by S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky to a finite root system $Φ$, count elements of the lattice $\nc$ of noncrossing partitions of corresponding type by rank. Similar interpretations for the $h$-vector of the positive part of $Δ(Φ)$ are provided. The proof utilizes the appearance of the complex $Δ(Φ)$ in the context of the lattice $\nc$, in recent work of two of the authors, as well as an explicit shelling of $Δ(Φ)$.

g-elements, finite buildings and higher Cohen-Macaulay connectivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result is a proof that the g-vector of a simplicial complex with a convex ear decomposition is an M-vector. This is a generalization of similar results for matroid complexes. We also show that a finite building has a convex ear decomposition. This leads to connections between higher Cohen-Macaulay connectivity and increasing h-vectors.

Reduced chromatic graph cohomology
In this paper we give a new characterization of the h-vector of the chromatic polynomial of a graph. We introduce reduced chromatic cohomology of a graph and show that h_i are its Betti numbers. We then discuss various combinatorial properties of these cohomologies. In particular we prove that these cohomologies depend only on the matroid type of the graph and describe their relationship to the regular chromatic cohomologies.

h-vectors of Gorenstein polytopes
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 114 (2007), no. 1, 65-76 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Ehrhart h-vector of an integer Gorenstein polytope with a regular unimodular triangulation satisfies McMullen's g-theorem; in particular, it is unimodal. This result generalizes a recent theorem of Athanasiadis (conjectured by Stanley) for compressed polytopes. It is derived from a more general theorem on Gorenstein affine normal monoids M: one can factor K[M] (K a field) by a "long" regular sequence in such a way that the quotient is still a normal affine monoid algebra. This technique reduces all questions about the Ehrhart h-vector of P to the Ehrhart h-vector of a Gorenstein polytope Q with exactly one interior lattice point, provided each lattice point in a multiple cP, c in N, can be written as the sum of n lattice points in P. (Up to a translation, the polytope Q belongs to the class of reflexive polytopes considered in connection with mirror symmetry.) If P has a regular unimodular triangulation, then it follows readily that the Ehrhart h-vector of P coincides with the combinatorial h-vector of the boundary complex of a simplicial polytope, and the g-theorem applies.

Generalized cluster complexes and Coxeter combinatorics
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices 2005, no. 44, 2709-2757 • Search Publication
We introduce and study a family of simplicial complexes associated to an arbitrary finite root system and a nonnegative integer parameter m. For m=1, our construction specializes to the (simplicial) generalized associahedra or, equivalently, to the cluster complexes for the cluster algebras of finite type. Our computation of the face numbers and h-vectors of these complexes produces the enumerative invariants defined in other contexts by C.A.Athanasiadis, suggesting links to a host of well studied problems in algebraic combinatorics of finite Coxeter groups, root systems, and hyperplane arrangements. Recurrences satisfied by the face numbers of our complexes lead to combinatorial algorithms for determining Coxeter-theoretic invariants. That is, starting with a Coxeter diagram of a finite Coxeter group, one can compute the Coxeter number, the exponents, and other classical invariants by a recursive procedure that only uses most basic graph-theoretic concepts applied to the input diagram. In types A and B, we rediscover the constructions and results obtained by E.Tzanaki <math.CO/0501100>.
